Part 220 - What if Carbs Aren't the Problem? w/ Dr. Randy Johns & Dr. Rob Vasquez

jeudi 12 septembre 2024Duration 01:19:50

Dr. Rob Vasquez and Dr. Randy Johns, known as The Happy Healthy Guys, wellness experts dedicated to transforming lives through natural health and wellness practices. With a focus on nutrition, detoxification, and holistic living, they aim to empower individuals to achieve optimal health and vitality. Dr. Vasquez and Dr. Johns are passionate about educating others on the importance of a balanced lifestyle, free from toxins and harmful habits. They share their knowledge through online content, public speaking, and wellness programs, helping people across the globe lead happier, healthier lives.

In this podcast episode Dr. Rob and Dr. Randy, share their journey from traditional medical paths to embracing chiropractic care and holistic health approaches. Both doctors recount their personal experiences with health challenges that led them to question the conventional allopathic model, which often focuses on symptom management rather than addressing root causes. Their journey led them to explore various diets and health practices, initially adhering to calorie-restrictive models but eventually shifting towards a more holistic understanding of nutrition. The hosts also discuss their approach to improving metabolic health by addressing common misconceptions and providing practical strategies. They emphasize the importance of metabolic flexibility, explaining how consuming the right types of carbohydrates can actually improve sleep and overall health, contrary to popular low-carb diets. They also talk about the dangers of consuming high-oxalate foods like spinach and almonds, which can lead to serious health issues, including kidney problems.

Part 211 - The #1 Trick To Not Get Fat - From Acclaimed Scientists Raubenheimer & Simpson

mercredi 6 mars 2024Duration 58:44

Dr. Stephen J. Simpson and Dr. David Raubenheimer are renowned scientists known for their work in the field of nutritional ecology. Their research primarily focuses on understanding how organisms, including humans, regulate their intake of nutrients and how this affects their health and behavior.

Dr. Stephen Simpson is an Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and a Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. His research has spanned several disciplines, from studying locusts to human obesity, and he has been influential in developing the field of nutritional ecology.

Dr. David Raubenheimer, also affiliated with the University of Sydney, holds the Leonard P. Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology. His research involves the study of nutrition and its effects across a wide range of species, including humans. He has worked extensively on the concept of nutritional geometry, which is a framework for understanding how animals and humans make decisions about what and how much to eat.

Together, Simpson and Raubenheimer developed the "Protein Leverage Hypothesis," which suggests that the protein content of the diet can strongly influence total energy intake and thus has significant implications for understanding obesity. Their collaborative work has been pivotal in highlighting the complex interactions between diet composition, appetite, and health, making significant contributions to both basic biology and implications for human health and nutrition.

SHOW NOTES:

  • (08:00) Every species studied in their natural, undisturbed environments thrive in their nutritional balance.

  • (16:32) The protein leverage hypothesis (see study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22022472/#:~:text=The%20'protein%20leverage%20hypothesis'%20proposes,promote%20the%20development%20of%20obesity.) posits that we have a preference for protein over other macronutrients, and that the amount of protein we consume influences our appetite for carbs and fats afterwards.

  • (28:07) Eating more, per se, isn’t the problem. It’s when that food is higher in energy density than fiber that leads to overeating and, by extension, obesity.

  • (38:58) Much of the fruit we eat is not entirely natural due to the modification they go through in farms.

  • (46:02) Over time, our bodies have adapted to thrive in the environment in which human beings find themselves. Today, we continue to adapt, but not necessarily for the better.

  • (54:18) Even our circadian biology has been shaken up through modern sleep patterns and our supplementation with sleep pills and caffeine.

Part 121 - Marty Kendall on Protein Confusion, Flawed Rodent Research, Nutrient Density, Satiety, and Insulin

Season 9 · Episode 6

mercredi 14 avril 2021Duration 01:30:22

We’re back with Marty Kendall, my nutrient density brother from another mother! I’ve been following his work since we recorded our first episode 2.5 years ago and he’s always doing something interesting and informative.

We cover a very interesting “scandal” in the rodent nutrition study world. I won’t spoil the details but it really is a shame these researchers took out this certain data, because all the other work they’ve done is spot-on.

We also hit all my other favorite topics in this one like nutrient density, satiety, insulin, personal fat threshold, the nutrient leverage hypothesis, and a whole lot more.

Part 120 - The Datoga, Chagga, and Transition to Village & City Living in Africa - Our Experience in Tanzania & Uganda (w/ Mary Ruddick, CNC)

Season 9 · Episode 5

mercredi 31 mars 2021Duration 01:06:10

Here we are at the end of the 4 part Africa series with my amazing friend Mary Ruddick. If you haven’t listened to the previous 3, I’d suggest going back and starting at the beginning. I’d really recommend doing this for this entire podcast series. It’s designed as an educational journey through the complex, conflicting world that is nutrition, health, food, the environment, and more.

This episode covers the rest of our journey including the Datoga tribe, the Chagga on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the transition of all the native living populations into the villages and then into the city. It’s a very clear decline in health as they do so. Make sure to watch this video interview on the Food Lies youtube channel to see all the photos and videos from our trip. I went back and added them all in and you’d also get to see Mary’s smiling face as we talk!

There’s a bunch of great presentations and videos on the Food Lies youtube channel as well. You can see the Game CHangers DEBUNKED film, the Food Lies trailer, and a lot of short highlights from interviews that will go into the film.

You’ll hear us talk about Cows 4 Kids which is the organization Mary and I started after seeing the lack of animal foods in the diet of many of the tribes we visited, especially with the youngest people who need them the most. You can go to http://cows4kids.com and click through to the Indiegogo campaign there. We already are over 60% of our campaign goal through all the generous contributions to the cause. 100% of the money is going to purchase animals for the school children.

Mary and I had a great Zoom call with one of our big contributors who put almost his whole covid relief check in. He said he didn’t ask for it, didn;t need it, and would rather see it go much further to help the communities in need. Check out what we’re doing at http://cows4kids.com

Also support the show and my team by checking out what we’re doing at http://nosetotail.org

We have boxes of grass fed and finished beef, buffalo, and lamb that’s shipped out to the 48 US states. We also have the low Omega 6 PUFA pork and chicken. Our other specialty is the ground beef with organs mixed in - it’s extra special because it has the liver, heart, kidney, and spleen. Most people stop at the liver and heart.

Our skin food is back in stock. It almost sold out immediately when we got our new batch. It’s that good, I’m telling you. It’s really a great deal as well because a little goes a long way. I still have barely dented my jar. It’s made from regeneratively grown beef tallow and is all hand made. You can add on our freshly ground seasonings and biltong as well. Biltong is a south african traditional beef snack with no sugar, nitrates, or other wacky stuff. It really saved me on the long flights to and from Africa - I don’t think I’d have made it without my Nose to Tail biltong.

So thanks for sharing this show with a friend, giving it a review on your podcast app, and being part of the Sapien community! For everything Sapien including being part of the tribe go to http://sapien.org

And now please enjoy this episode with Mary Ruddick.

Part 119 - The Batwa (Pygmies) of Uganda - What We Learned From Our Time with Them (w/ Mary Ruddick, CNC)

Season 9 · Episode 4

mercredi 24 mars 2021Duration 58:29

Hello my friends, it’s time for another episode with the wonderful Mary Ruddick on our journey through Africa. This episode we make it over to Uganda and travel 10 hours to the Bwindi impenetrable forest to visit the Batwa tribe, better known as the Pygmies. This group used to live in the forest and hunt & trap animals and eat all natural foods until 1991 when they were forced off their land by the government. They now have to rely on corn and beans and other crops and are losing their health and their culture. The group we stayed with are mixing in with the other people in the village and are definitely losing their heritage.

It was great to visit them while that’s still possible. I don’t know how many more years they’ll be around. You’ll definitely want to listen to this one and hear about the 120 year old great, great, great, grandmother dancing and stomping around with her (youngest) 91 year old daughter. We also got to trek in the forest and hang out with the few remaining mountain gorillas which was another once in a lifetime experience. At the end we talk about how the modern foods and oils are coming into the cities in Uganda and it’s causing some big problems that are going to be devastating if it continues.

Mary and I mention our new organization to help groups like the Pygmy, Maasai, and Chagga that we visited get back to their ancestral diets. It’s called Cows4Kids and we do exactly that! Go to http://cows4kids.com and learn more and click through to the Indiegogo page that just launched today. We’re putting in our own money to buy cows, goats, pigs, and chickens for these communities but are opening it up for others to do the same. This is not like a normal non-profit where there’s all kinds of middlemen and administrative stuff. It’s just us and you directly buying animals for the specific communities we visited. Mary is going to simply take whatever funds we raise and buy that many animals for each group.

She knows many other groups personally who are in need and we can expand if people support the project. These people are not getting enough nutrition from animal foods and having a cow and chickens can supply them milk and eggs year round that will vastly change their health trajectory.

What I’m most excited about is seeing the difference between the groups we support and neighboring villages who only have the corn flour, oil, and sugar, for example. This is all the Maasai school we visited had for their meals all day. If the community (and the world) see the differences in the health of the kids that get something as simple as milk in their porridge each day compared to those who didn't, maybe people will wake up, change their thinking, and stop dropping off sacks of grains for aid and get some cows instead!

Go to http://cows4kids.com and support the project along with us. You can click through to the Indiegogo campaign there or search for cows 4 kids. Thanks everyone, we’re very excited to get more of the animal foods they wish they had back in their diet.

If you want to get some quality animal foods for yourself there’s http://NoseToTail.org where we ship out boxes straight from our ranch in Texas to your door. We’ve added great products like biltong (which is a sugar free and additive free grass fed jerky), skin care from beef tallow which is absolutely amazing, and seasonings. There’s free shipping options as well and that’s at http://NoseToTail.org

Also go to http://sapien.org for everything else. You can book something with Dr. Gary, join our Sapien program if you’re ready to make some significant changes in your health and/or want to lose weight, or join the Sapien Tribe to get all the bonus content, private Zoom sessions with myself and Dr. gary, and much more. That’s Sapien.org

Now it’s time for the show with Mary Ruddick and the Batwa of Uganda! Make sure to watch the video version on the Food Lies youtube channel for the photos and videos from the trip. You won’t want to miss the 120 year old lady dancing!

Part 118 - Rob Stuart on Complete Skin Health - Reversing Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis and More w/ Diet & Lifestyle

Season 9 · Episode 3

mercredi 17 mars 2021Duration 01:09:54

Hi there, everyone! This is your host Brian Sanders founder of http://Sapien.org, http://NoseToTail.org, and creator of the upcoming Food Lies film! We’re back with a little break from the episodes with Mary on our trip to Africa for an awesome episode on skin health. This is an important topic to many people and should not be missed by anyone. The skin is the largest organ in the body and needs to be cared for like any other organ. Luckily it’s a lot easier to care for because it’s hanging out on the outside. But this makes it hard to take care of because - you guessed it, it’s on the outside.

Luckily, like almost everything I cover here on this podcast, you can heal your skin with a good diet. It’s pretty amazing how important your diet is to every system and part of your body. We also talk about some other techniques like cleansing and washing and skin care products. Spoiler alert, the skin care products are made from beef tallow and I have them available on http://NoseToTail.org You can also make your own beef tallow skin care products if you have the time and interest.

I had a great time talking to Rob Stuart and he’s a real pro at helping people clear up issues such as Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis and More. He’s got a big youtube channel where he makes a ton of helpful videos on the topic and also works with people directly.

Before we get to the episode I’ll just mention a few other things we make at http://NoseToTail.org You can make a box of items and get free shipping anywhere in the 48 contiguous states if you hit the minimums. Other than the skin food and soap products we have the biltong - which is soft, air-dried grass fed meat with no curing agents like nitrates or sugar. The droewors is the stick version of this which some people like even better. So far the peri peri flavor is a crowd favorite.

We also have the seasonings which are very unique. Other than them not having sugar, fillers, or anything else other than fresh herbs and spices, I have neglected to mention possibly the biggest secret to why they’re so good! They are all freshly ground. This is not the case with any other mass produced seasoning available in stores. I teamed up with some great guys that make this themselves and get the ingredients in their whole form and grind it fresh for each batch we make for Nose To Tail. This makes a huge difference in the taste.

Of course we have our staples - the primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in as well as the low Omega 6 chicken and pork. We feed these animals a special diet so they have an unparalleled omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. Make a box now at http://NoseToTail.org

For our health program and tribe go to http://Sapien.org This is the best place to go to start your health journey or continue it. The Sapien Program is 10 weeks and will give you everything you need to get going along with a health coach. This is backed by Dr. Gary at Evolve Healthcare in Los Angeles but it can be done anywhere in the world. The tribe is the private community with all the perks, bonus features, and Nose to Tail discounts for members. Find that also at http://Sapien.org

Thanks for supporting these things so we don’t have to take outside sponsors. I really take pride in turning down all the offers I get each week. Thanks for sharing with a friend, giving the show a review on itunes or the Apple podcast app, and don’t forget to start back at episode 1! Please enjoy this one with Rob!

Part 117 - The Hadza of Tanzania - What We Learned From Our Time with Them (w/ Mary Ruddick, CNC)

Season 9 · Episode 2

vendredi 12 mars 2021Duration 01:02:27

Hello friends, we’re back for another African adventure.

I implore you to watch the youtube version of this interview on the Food Lies youtube channel. I spent a very long time adding in all the photos and videos that we reference throughout this episode. It would be a shame to not see all of the visuals. You can even watch it on 2x speed if you click on the settings icon on the video. I even put in a recording of the song the Hadza sing to us (the full recording closes out the episode). Some of it is a bit graphic, I’ll warn you!

We got to spend time with 2 different Hadza  groups which was very key in understanding more about their health and habits. Seeing 8 tribes or communities in total across Tanzania and Uganda was also paramount to our observations. Getting as many data points as we could really helped give us a well-rounded look at these cultures. Even this was just scratching the surface, however. We just got this one window into their lives and it would be ideal to come back at different times of the year and see even more groups.

I don’t want to spoil any of the stories, but I’ll say we had some epic adventures going on long hunts with them and eating very nose to tail.

Speaking of nose to tail, that’s what my company is called. We have premium meat, snacks, and body care products from sustainable ranches at http://NoseToTail.org

My other company is called Sapien where I work with Dr. Gary Shlifer to help people lose weight, reverse disease, and improve metabolic health. You can find more at http://sapien.org

This is how this podcast and most of my work is possible. I have these 2 businesses that offer products and services I 100% believe and have developed from scratch or with people who are the best at what they do. I turn down all other advertising and partnership offers. Even though I leave a lot of money on the table, I think this is the best way to be unbiased with my content. By supporting Nose to Tail and Sapien you are getting a great win-win! You get top-quality products, and I can continue to pay for all the content production.

We have something for everyone from grass fed and finished meat delivered to your door, to the air dried beef snacks, to the freshly ground seasonings, to the body care products. These are all at http://NoseToTail.org and there’s free shipping options for all products if you put together a box.

Plus we have the Sapien Program that I mentioned earlier and the Sapien Tribe if you want to get more involved in the community. You get all the bonus content, Zoom calls, and perks including a perpetual Nose to Tail large discount. Find it all at http://sapien.org

You can still support the film on Indiegogo - you can click through from http://sapien.org and you can also support the show at no cost by sharing with family and friends and giving it a review on itunes or the APple podcast app. It all really helps!

Thanks so much and please enjoy this next adventure with Mary Ruddick and I!

Part 116 - The Maasai of Tanzania - What We Learned From Our Time with Them (w/ Mary Ruddick, CNC)

Season 9 · Episode 1

mercredi 10 mars 2021Duration 01:12:53

Welcome back from the break everyone and welcome to season 9 of the Peak Human podcast! I’m Brian Sanders and I’m back from Africa with some stories! What an epic journey! I went there with Mary Ruddick, her boyfriend Drako who helped film, and director/filmographer Jay to spend some time with native living tribes to learn from them and get footage for the Food Lies film. For new listeners Food Lies is a feature-length documentary I’ve been working on for years. I’ve interviewed many of the top doctors, nutrition, and agriculture experts around the world and am now in the final stages of post-production.

You can find the (very outdated) trailer and some great highlight clips on the Food Lies youtube channel. You can also find out about all that we’re doing at http://Sapien.org and link to the film page from there.

This is a special episode today with the nutrition genius Mary Ruddick who graciously planned this whole trip. I’d definitely recommend watching the video version of this podcast on the Food Lies youtube so you can see Mary’s radiant, healthy face as well as photos of what we are talking about.

This episode is just on the Maasai tribe in Tanzania. We visited 2 main communities and talk about all that we learned from our time with them. We’ll have 3 more episodes coming out soon covering all the tribes and clans we spent time with.

You’ll here some super unique first-hand experience with one of the few groups of people in the world still living close to how they’ve lived for thousands of years. These are the people where the men live mostly on meat, blood, and milk. Spoiler alert - Mary and I drank the fresh blood and milk straight from the cow. Super cool experience along with a ton of other stuff we learned on how they are so healthy and live so long.

Just to remind everyone this show takes on no advertisers or outside funding and is made possible by my organizations Nose to Tail and Sapien. We have the sustainable raised grass fed meat, body care products, seasonings, and more at http://NoseToTail.org and we have our physician supervised weight loss and disease reversal programs at http://Sapien.org

If you’re familiar with these great products and services feel free to skip ahead to the start of the show. We have so many great stories coming in from email or social media from customers telling us how much they love the products.

Part 115 - Dr. Cate Shanahan & Tucker Goodrich on the True Cause of Disease and How We Know This

Season 8 · Episode 19

vendredi 5 février 2021Duration 01:52:45

Today is a special show that I really enjoyed with 2 guests - Dr. Cate Shanahan and Tucker Goodrich. I had Tucker on years ago for episode 20 and he laid out the entire case against seed oils which was very compelling. Dr. Cate has been on twice already (more recently) and is a wealth of knowledge on many, many things, especially the dangers of seed oils and reinforcing the Sapien diet concepts.

We cover how people get fat & sick all the way down to the mitochondrial level. We discuss the different players in this process including seed oils (or more specifically excess amounts of omega-6), refined grains, and sugar.

We also do my favorite thing and look at all sides of the arguments. We use an article a seed oil supporter wrote as a tool to check in on the studies and claims cited. You won’t want to miss this one! It’s a long one, but we cover a lot, and there’s a bunch of great new info.

This podcast is made possible by my company Nose to Tail where we offer nutrient dense, whole foods delivered to you.
