Music and motherhood, and the constant juggle, with Lisa McHugh
Season 15 · Episode 8
mardi 14 janvier 2025 • Duration 46:41
Joining me for this week's episode is Lisa McHugh, an award-winning singer-songwriter and one of the brightest stars in Irish country music. Beyond her music, she’s also an entrepreneur, a proud mam of two, and a voice of positivity and empowerment for women. Her two children, Milo who is two and Hallie who is just five months, are the centre of her world, but her parenting path has thrown up some real challenges for Lisa. After Hallie was born, Lisa spent ten days in hospital with her brand new daughter in the NICU, where she couldn't see Milo and couldn't cuddle her newborn as she was hooked up to a CPAP machine. Hallie's health had another challenge just recently too, and another stint in hospital was required. But through it all, Lisa remains positive, while also being honest about how hard is has been for her and her family. With her own parents in Glasgow, where Lisa was born, she says that having a break or some downtime isn't something she can remember having in recent memory. All of this, and a full-on career as a musician means that Lisa is my new inspiration! I hope you enjoy listening this week, and I'll be back with more next week.

Losing a child, and the grief process five years on with Eileen Loughlin
Season 14 · Episode 8
mardi 27 août 2024 • Duration 52:55
Before I start this week's guest intro, I just want to flag that this episode is a very emotional one and might not be a comfortable listen for anyone in the early stages of grief, as it deals with the loss of a child.
My amazing and brave guest for this episode is Eileen Loughlin. Eileen is a mother of four gorgeous children, from ages 20 all the way to just two years old. Five and a half years ago, Eileen and her family's life was turned upside down when a tragic accident at their home led to the death of their youngest child at the time Annabel, who was just 3 and a half when she passed away. Eileen talks to me today about Annabel's short but happy life, her grieving process, the support that has seen her through and her hopes for her three living children as they move through their lives. She also tells me that there are plans in motion for a way to remember Annabel and build a legacy through which she can live on in memory. A gut-wrenching listen for me as the mother of a child the same age as Annabel, but for anyone experiencing loss, this could be a really helpful and hopeful episode. I'll be back next week with more.

And how her 2nd baby Luna May was in NICU for 2 weeks where she was supported by the incredible teams that care for our tiny heroes.

Raising Brave: Hair loss and Online Hate - Claire Balding
Season 5 · Episode 8
samedi 17 juillet 2021 • Duration 01:04:28
Whether it’s in the classroom or the football pitch, we tell our children to be kind.
Not to bully.
We also tell them to do what we do.
To see us as their role models.
And yet. As we’ve seen after football games, or in workplaces, or… online anonymously in groups and gossip sites, adults, women, mothers are sharing hate.
In this episode Sinead talks to Claire Balding best known for sharing her experience of hair loss and creating Trua a clinic supporting hair regrowth, to talk about her experience of online hate, boundaries being crossed and strangers making her feel afraid.
How when she checks their profile they are often mothers themselves and how it was in fact this weight of keeping up with motherhood, the not being able to admit to needing a break, or asking for help or showing the world that it was even a little bit hard which contributed to her alopecia and hair loss in the first place. I understand this fear of being judged or shamed or cancelled or thought of as less.
But I know we are raising brave.
So we need to do better because hashtag bekind is not enough.
If not for each other, but because our kids are watching our every step.

Season 5 · Episode 7
samedi 10 juillet 2021 • Duration 01:16:27
At the beginning of this season Sinead spoke to Orla McConnon, who at the time was just a couple of weeks away from the birth of her first baby - it was an episode all about anticipation, excitement & expectation for what was around the corner.
Orla is back to take us through the reality of the labour, the birth and the first six weeks of motherhood.
We talk about stitches, boobs, pumps and pain, the unexpected moments and unexpected feelings.
We talk about the joy but also the sadness in realising that nothing will ever be the same again.
And we talk about the type of things that every mum should feel safe to talk about… that you can love your baby and the magic and the joy and still find it hard.
