Navigating Change: Dr. Una’s Roadmap for Physician Innovation

jeudi 5 juin 2025Duration 38:53

Send us a text

Dr. Una, founder of EntreMD, shares her journey from pediatrician to physician entrepreneur, revealing how doctors can rediscover autonomy and fulfillment through business skills. She explains how a moment of clarity in 2016 sparked her mission to help 100,000 physicians transform their professional lives and rewrite the narrative around physician burnout.

• EntreMD began with just eight people at a restaurant meeting in 2018 and has grown to reach thousands
• The "arrival fallacy" prevents physicians from embracing the beginner's mindset needed for entrepreneurship
• Even as an introvert, Dr. Una learned speaking and networking skills through deliberate practice
• Physicians can explore numerous paths: private practice, coaching, consulting, writing, art, and more
• Start with just 10 minutes daily of focused reflection on what you truly want
• Delegation is crucial – leverage your earning capacity to buy time from others
• You're already worthy – improve yourself because you're worthy, not to become worthy

Get free physician business education through the EntreeMD podcast, explore the "15-dollar MBA" books including The EntreMD Method, or join the EntreeMD Business School at EntreMD.com.

Empty Cups Don't Pour: Why Self-Compassion Matters

vendredi 23 mai 2025Duration 07:06

Send us a text

After celebrating Mother's Day, we explore a concept everyone needs regardless of parental status: mothering yourself. Medical training conditions us to abandon our humanity bit by bit, wearing sacrifices like badges of honor while neglecting our own basic needs.

• The caregiver trap teaches us to neglect ourselves while caring for others
• Even the most brilliant physician cannot pour from an empty cup
• Self-care is not selfish but essential for sustainable practice
• Mothering yourself means saying no without apology when something doesn't align with your values
• Rest and restoration are forms of preservation in a system designed to ignore our limits
• When we properly care for ourselves, we reclaim our power and model humanity for others
• Challenge 1: Identify what you truly need this week to sustain yourself
• Challenge 2: Dare to dream again and reconnect with your authentic desires
• Start by asking what one thing would put a genuine smile on your face today

You are not just a physician. You are worthy of care as well.

Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. If you are in need of medical assistance talk to your physician.

Honoring our humanity and neurobiological needs with Dr. Mary Rensel, MD

"There's no other me out there. I can learn things from everybody, but there's not the one person I can model for exactly what means something to me, what I'm good at, and what interests me." -Dr. Mary Rensel, MD

Often we find ourselves trying to emulate others, and not tapping into our own creativity or our 'inner power'.  We are creative beings (humans). At times, we lack self belief, and it is run over by self doubt.

What if we could cultivate the belief in self?
What if we could build an answer or solution to a larger problem?
Small dents, from multiple individuals, can make a crater!

I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Mary Rensel, MD, physician and creator of Brain Fresh LLC,  a neuroscience based professional development  support system.  She spoke about her innovation and inspiration behind Brain Fresh, as well as her peaks and valleys through her medical career.

Discussed in this episode:

  • Peaks and valleys in life.
  • Different things worked at different times in career and home life.
  • Prioritize.  Your own needs are important.
  • Doing things of interest and that you love.
  • Innovation/creating can be inspirational.  Sometimes things get stagnant.
  • We are not always in the growth zone.
  • There are some things that are non-negotiable
  • Ensuring family, spiritual, health, work were balanced.
  • Burnout has been around since 1970s.  going up and up.

What comes to mind when discussing hustle culture?
Do you think it is true that people are rewarded for pushing through and collecting accolades, financial security?

It is no secret these questions make me think of 9 to 5 from the 1980s, but then again, that was my decade of birth.

In this episode, I spoke with Jennie Blumenthal, who 20 years as an executive in Corporate America counseling Fortune 500 companies on growth strategy and digital transformation and left during the pandemic pivot.   She now coaches executive women through their own process of transformation.
Having experienced burnout, she stepped away from the corporate life, which she wrote about.  Her book,  Corporate Rehab: Ditch the Hustle Culture and Thrive Again, covers these topics, as well as her own transformation as it unfolded. She narrates her steps.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

1.  Jennie discusses her journey from corporate America to where she is now.
2.  A quick, but deep dive into the hierarchy of human needs.
3. The various work views from the different generations in the workforce.
4.  She discusses her steps to thrive again.
5. Reconnect with the self because it is the most important relationship.         Knowing  the self is a life-long journey.
6. You have the answer within you. You don’t have to look elsewhere for the secret to happiness/life.
7.  Start the day with gratitude, goals, keeping intention at the forefront of the mind.

Jennie has not only written a book, and not only does she coach, she is also a speaker.  She has a vast knowledge of the business world and how to articulate it very well.

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Medicine to Combat Documentation with Matt Dallmann

vendredi 23 décembre 2022Duration 23:52

Send us a text

It is no secret that documentation has become burdensome in medicine.
Physicians did not go to extended schooling and training to write notes that appease insurance and the legal system.
Notes are/were meant to document an encounter that happened between physician and patient.
The EHR has become the 'bane of my existence' while working primary care and even during the days I used to do inpatient medicine.  Using a computer to check a box and look at the screen instead of looking at the patient has diluted the physician-patient relationship.

What if we could leverage AI [artificial intelligence] to help alleviate that burden while appeasing the paper gods and insurance companies?

I had the pleasure of having a delightful conversation with Matt Dallmann, the developer of SmartNoteMD, has spent the last 20 years in private healthcare management, consulting and medical billing.

He shares his inspiration for developing SmartNoteMD as well as his passion for contributing to the world of medicine.  Collaboration with physicians and AI developers can be a possible solution to help prevent burnout/moral injury.
The documentation is not going away any time soon.  But, with brilliant minds like Matt's, it is possible to find solutions.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Matt Dallmann describes his background in healthcare and inspiration for developing SmartNoteMD.
  • The use of AI in medicine to help alleviate administrative burden.
  • Collaboration and roll out of SmartNoteMD.

The Dark Side of Medicine with Dr. Corrigan

lundi 12 décembre 2022Duration 01:18:51

Send us a text

Building on principles learned in last week's episode from Dr. Amy King, that two things can exist at once,  our guest today describes being a physician:

"Medicine is, is on the one hand such a privilege and such a joy to be a doctor, but on the other hand, the, the personal costs can be too much."

On today's episode, I sat down with Dr. Corrigan, a recovering physician who left medicine after burning out, and more. Overachiever. Impostor syndrome. Had never heard of Corrigan's Secret Door until it was too late. Thankfully now in a way better place. Co-founded Physicians Anonymous with intention to solve physician burnout, mental illness, and addiction. Hopes to prevent future medical career disasters through peer support, advocacy, policy change, and innovation.

He shares his story along with several other points and pearls.

Trigger warning! Physician suicide is discussed in this episode.

Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • Physician burnout versus moral injury.
  • The problem is the system, not the physicians.
  • Physician suicide, statistics, drivers.
  • The culture of medicine.
  •  Possible solutions to the overwhelm and moral injury of HCW/ physicians.
  • The financial handcuffs [golden handcuffs] of medicine.
  • Trauma in medicine.
  • His journey and co-founding Physicians Anonymous

Self-doubt versus Imposter Syndrome with Dr. Diane Shannon, MD, MPH

vendredi 25 novembre 2022Duration 22:14

Send us a text

Dr. Diane Shannon, MD, MPH is a trailblazer with regard to physician burnout. When she saw that the system did not allow [due to many pitfalls] her to deliver patient care like she had envisioned, she changed her narrative.  She is an author, speaker, and professional coach with a plethora of experience.

Burnout can feel isolating.  As physicians, we don’t discuss how we feel may be because it shows vulnerability, which we [as physicians] are taught not to show.  We are trained not to ask for help or it is a sign of weakness, failure.

Dr. Shannon had the courage to tell her story, and by doing so, it led her to all the great work she has done!

Topics discussed in this episode:

·       The key driver for burnout is the system not the individual

·       The difference between self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

·       How the above can show up in men versus women.

·       Productive time versus enriching and non-enriching non-productive time and              the difference between them.

·       The history of residency.

·       You have to be a full person.

·       There is hope.
