  • Substance Abuse
  • Recovery
  • Emotional Awareness

[1:09] Lisa introduces April, a coaching graduate, and expresses excitement about sharing April’s journey. April shares her nervousness about the interview and her decision to approach it authentically without over-preparing. April introduces herself as a 58-year-old mother of three from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and discusses her transition after her children left home.

[4:40] Lisa and April reflect on her childhood, noting that food issues weren’t apparent until later, but there were underlying dynamics related to food and money. April recalls learning about food as a reward or punishment during her childhood.

[9:01] April shares her self-perception as ‘big boned’ from childhood and how it evolved over time, particularly after having children and dealing with weight issues. Lisa and April discuss her childhood, including her parents’ young age, lack of attention, and the responsibilities she took on with raising her siblings, which contributed to her substance abuse starting at the age of 12. April reflects on her journey to sobriety at 25, and how a moment with her daughter prompted her to attend AA meetings.

[22:00] April describes her struggle with emotional eating as a coping mechanism for anxiety and stress, and her experiences with various diets over 30 years, often resulting in weight gain.

[30:15] Lisa and April discuss the importance of recognizing the emotional component in programs, highlighting how it can be a transformative aspect for participants. Lisa mentions how social media algorithms can lead people to discover beneficial programs, as was the case with finding ‘Life With Kate’ on Instagram. April describes how following Lisa online provided significant insights and motivation, emphasizing the impact of online content on personal growth.

[39:54] Lisa explains the program’s structure, divided into three parts: understanding the problem, finding solutions, and maintaining progress. April shares her initial skepticism and eventual breakthroughs, emphasizing the importance of mindful eating and self-permission.

[46:05] April discusses significant personal realizations, such as not hating their body but disliking past actions. They highlight the importance of self-awareness, journaling, and reparenting themselves emotionally. Lisa uses Plato’s allegory of the cave to illustrate the transformative journey participants undergo, moving from ignorance to enlightenment and freedom.

[53:17] Lisa and April wrap up with the discussion of how April is incorporating the tools she learned to cope with the emotions of life and how she has created a sense of safety with them.

It's Literally Never About the Food with Kristen

lundi 22 juillet 2024Duration 01:23:29

Lisa sits down with group coaching alum, Kristin. They discuss Kristin’s decision to share her story and her journey out of the cave. They discuss her early relationship with food, how the OOTC group has helped her family, and made her a better person for everyone in her life.

Topics Include:

  • Food as Comfort
  • Self-Sacrifice/Trying to Help Everyone Else
  • Choosing to Love Yourself
  • What it means to be OOTC as a family

[1:47] Kristin introduces herself, how she came to find Lisa and the OOTC community, and her gratitude for everything she has learned through the group coaching program.

[3:58] Lisa and Kristin discuss Kristin’s decision to not do the podcast anonymously. Kristin shared that she was afraid of making anyone uncomfortable with what she was sharing but ultimately decided that showing up authentically was important and healing.

[7:05] Lisa and Kristin discuss Kristin’s experiences with food from ages 0 to 5. Kristin shared memories of using food, especially sugary foods, to feel better during uncomfortable times.

[13:41] Lisa and Kristin examine how Kristin’s use of food for comfort affected her weight and health, particularly during puberty. Kristin reflects on her experiences and symptoms during puberty and linked them to her eating habits. She shares how cultural influences and lack of positive body image role models led to a constant feeling of needing to improve her body.

[26:29] Kristin shares how growing up with a sibling with special needs led to self-sacrificing behavior and desire to not add to parental stress led to turning to food for comfort.

[41:24] Lisa asked how Kristin learned that the way you eat and exercise affects your body weight and image. Kristin shares that through health class she learned about energy input and output, societal influences like movies and magazines emphasizing body image, and personal experiences with friends and family reinforced these ideas.

[43:33] Kristin talks about how her body was signaling health issues, but they were not addressed properly until much later, symptoms like irregular periods, acne, weight fluctuations, and constant sickness, which were masked by temporary solutions.

[50:37] Lisa and Kristin discuss how she started to address health from a holistic perspective, including mental and emotional well-being, influenced by personal relationships and professional guidance.

[52:10] Lisa and Kristin talk about how the OOTC program provided the missing piece in Kristin’s health journey, allowing her to integrate and apply all the knowledge she had gained. Kristin shares how even with this knowledge there is a continuous effort required to maintain personal growth and the realization that there is no finish line in perfectionism and that her problems were literally never about the food.

[1:09:10] Lisa and Kristin talk about how the OOTC program has provided tools to help parents understand her children better, breaking historical traumas, and fostering healthier relationships with food for the whole family. Kristin shared how her husband also joined the program which has made him a better husband, dad, brother, son, and friend.

[1:16:07] Kristin shares how by choosing to like herself has led to healthier choices around food and effortlessly losing weight.

[1:21:30] Lisa and Kristin wrap up with how the OOTC program is life-changing, making it a worthwhile investment. Kristin expressed gratitude for the program’s role in helping her focus on core issues, thereby improving her life so much.
