154. Health Risks of Artificial Food Dyes with Rebecca Bevans, PhD

mercredi 26 octobre 2022Duration 55:48

Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Send us a text!

When her 7-year-old son told her he didn’t want to live anymore, Dr. Bevans made it her mission to get to the bottom of his behavior and mental health problems. Rebecca Bevans, PhD has a Masters degree in Child Development and a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience. Her educational background gave her the insight to know that when her son said his brain was “buzzing,” something was wrong.

After behavioral therapy, discipline, and everything else she could think of wasn’t helping, she stumbled upon an article that linked food dyes to hyperactivity and similar symptoms her son had. Removing food dyes from his diet wasn’t easy. There are red, green, yellow, and blue dyes. Food marketed to kids is especially high in artificial dyes - think skittles, cereals, M&Ms. But other products like sunscreen, gum, and toothpaste had them, too.

Her son experienced severe withdrawal but slowly started to improve. After removing all artificial food dyes from her son and family’s diet, he no longer had behavioral problems and was able to heal physically and mentally. Her TEDx talk, The Effects Of Artificial Food Dyes, was so moving and I asked her to share her and her son’s story today on the podcast.

Highlights From This Episode

  • Dr. Bevans shares her son’s story on how artificial food dyes affected his health and behavior
  • Why removing red 40 wasn’t enough and common foods that contain yellow, green, and blue dyes affected him, too.
  • What happened to Dr. Bevan’s son after food dyes were removed from his diet.
  • Did his doctor’s say anything about artificial food dyes affecting behavior?
  • What about the effects of added sugar on behavior?
  • When behavioral modification and counseling isn’t working.
  • How to know if your food has artificial food dyes.
  • The best time to experiment with removing food dyes from a diet.
  • How Dr. Bevans dealt with artificial food dyes at school.
  • Why the M&Ms are different in the US & Europe.

152. Healing From Trauma & Limbic Loops With Don Wood, PhD

mercredi 19 octobre 2022Duration 59:20

Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Send us a text!

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 78 percent of children reported more than one traumatic experience before five years of age. (https://www.nctsn.org/

Unresolved childhood trauma often manifests in adulthood as multiple health problems, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and a lack of direction.

Trauma is a wide umbrella with some events being more obvious than others. Examples of trauma include the death of a loved one, rape, physical, mental, or emotional abuse, divorce, a breakup, bullying, natural disasters, accidents, war, and the list goes on.

Traumas cause a loop in the brain to be formed that makes you feel unsafe. Without healing and “resetting” your brain’s thought waves, you could be caught in a subconscious fight, flight, or freeze situation.

Don Wood, PhD, is the author of two top selling books, Emotional Concussions and You Must Be Out of Your Mind. He is the Founder & CEO of the Inspired Performance Institute, and creator of the patented TIPP method.

TIPP is a cutting-edge method inspired and developed through the newest developments in neuroscience and designed to clear away the effects of disturbing or traumatic events, repurpose old patterns and set the individual’s mind up for peak performance.

Dr. Don’s TIPP method helps reboot the brain’s stuck thought patterns. This makes it possible to stop chronic negative thought loops (AKA limbic loops), and not let the pain of past trauma continue to affect you today.

Highlights From This Episode

  • What counts as “trauma” and how do we identify it in ourselves?
  • Resisting our traumas, and moving on.
  • How traumas manifest in later life.
  • How do you help people uncover the root of their trauma?
  • Time Slice Theory: What it is and how it works.
  • How are trauma and physical health linked?
  • Addiction and how it can relate to food.
  • Solutions to stop the sugar cravings loop.
  • How long does it take to re-code your brain?
  • Practical tip to take into your own life.

150. The Biggest Cause of Fatty Liver Disease & Insulin Resistance With Richard Johnson, MD, FACP

mercredi 12 octobre 2022Duration 56:43

Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Send us a text!

Nearly 1 in 4 have fatty liver disease and 88% of adults are not metabolically healthy. This episode will explain why fatty liver disease is a direct result of excessive fructose. Fructose is found in sugary foods but can also be made in the body from high glycemic carbohydrates and alcohol. Excess fructose is the primary driver of poor metabolic health and liver insulin resistance.

In this week’s episode of the Reshape Your Health Podcast, I interview Dr. Richard Johnson, author of Nature Wants Us to Be Fat. He explains the link between fructose, fatty liver, and insulin resistance. We discuss how our biological fat storage process works and how to shut it off. You’ll learn dietary recommendations to lower fatty liver and insulin resistance. We also touch on central insulin resistance, how sugar affects the brain, and why Alzheimer’s is being called Type 3 Diabetes. This conversation was truly fascinating.

Dr. Richard Johnson is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado in Denver and has been a practicing physician and clinical scientist for over 25 years. He is internationally recognized for his seminal work on the role of sugar and its component fructose, in obesity and diabetes. His work has also suggested a fundamental role for uric acid (which is generated during fructose metabolism) in metabolic syndrome. He has previously authored The Sugar Fix with Timothy Gower in 2008, and The Fat Switch in 2012.

Highlights From This Episode

  • What happens when the “survival switch” turns on and stores fat?
  • What foods turn the survival switch and liver insulin resistance on?
  • The #1 food that causes non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Is whole fruit bad for liver health?
  • What foods cause the production of fructose in your body?
  • Alcohol’s effect on liver health is due to fructose.
  • AMP, IMP, and TMAO: How shellfish, processed meats, and beer can contribute to insulin resistance.
  • Central insulin resistance and how sugar affects the brain.

149. Ask Yourself This to Stop Procrastinating Weight Loss

vendredi 7 octobre 2022Duration 05:35

Have a question you want answered on the podcast? Send us a text!

In this episode, you'll learn the best question to ask yourself to stop procrastinating weight loss. Plus, you're invited to our Healthy Holidays Workshop!

Imagine how you could be more present at parties if you weren’t constantly feeling fat, or obsessing over the food that you want, but “can’t have.”

What if you didn’t even want the Halloween candy? 🤯

What would it feel like to stop after one just piece of pie at Thanksgiving, and be satisfied.

What if you didn’t overeat or emotionally eat at togethers?

What if when a coworker offered you a donut or cinnamon roll you simply said, “No thanks.” instead of giving in to the constant temptation and food peer pressure?

Wouldn’t it feel amazing to have self-control around sweets, and be able to have a little (if you choose) without feeling like you’re getting completely off track, or give yourself a mental beatdown?

All of this is possible. It’s taken me years to learn how to be healthy through the holidays, and if you join me for the Healthy Holidays Workshop you’ll get all my best strategies in less than 90 minutes.

You’ll leave feeling motivated to start the holiday season strong, without fearing food. Go to www.zivli.com to register today.
