Lisa sits down again with her number one fan and group coaching alum, Jade. They discuss Jade’s story with food, body image, and how she has healed her relationship with both. They also discuss parenting out of the cave and helping children to develop a healthy relationship with their bodies and food. Listen to Jade's first podcast, From Resistance to Acceptance. Topics Include:
[1:00] Lisa introduces Jade, mentioning her as a dedicated follower and fan. They discuss how Jade initially disliked Lisa's content but eventually became a fan. Lisa and Jade dive into Jade’s story, particularly her realization about being an emotional eater after listening to the podcast and following Lisa’s social media. [3:26] Jade shares her early life experiences, including her parents’ separation, living in a small village in Mexico. Jade discusses how poverty shaped her childhood, and feeling like a burden to her father, experiencing anxiety during supermarket trips, and feeling guilty about the financial strain she perceived she was causing. Jade shares how her large appetite was a frequent topic of discussion among adults in her hippie family. She discusses how she was made to feel that her appetite was undesirable and something to be questioned. [7:30] Jade shares her experience of sexual abuse during puberty and how her mother did not believe her because the abuser was financially supporting the family; how food became a source of comfort, especially through secret consumption of Snickers and Coca-Cola provided by the abuser. [17:24] Jade describes the emotional impact of puberty, including dissociation, withdrawal, and the struggle with body image due to comments from others. She shares her struggle with body image, including avoiding mirrors and feeling like a ‘gross monster.’ [18:30] Lisa and Jade look deeper at how comments about eating habits during childhood can impact a child’s perception of food and self-worth. They explore how parents’ comments about their children’s eating habits can create feelings of shame, fear, and judgment, making food and eating feel unsafe. [20:00] Jade and Lisa discuss how Jade is working to make her own child curious about food and how they feel after eating certain foods, like sugar. Then they continue to examine Jade's relationship with food and her body through the years. [33:16] During her pregnancy at 33, Jade was hyper-focused on eating ‘good’ foods and maintaining a certain body image, even while preparing for childbirth. She shares her journey of embracing body positivity through photography, capturing postpartum bodies. She talks about her internal conflict of feeling like an ‘ugly piece of shit’ despite promoting body positivity and photographing other women. [52:30] Jade describes her experiences with intuitive eating and intermittent fasting, and how she reintroduced fasting as a spiritual practice. Lisa and Jade examine the fear of hunger and healing that. [1:09:08] Jade talks about how she navigates emotional eating by eating without shame and recognizing the need for comfort during exhaustion. Lisa and Jade both emphasize the importance of being kind to oneself and understanding the underlying emotions through practicing compassionate curiosity. [1:19:42] Lisa and Jade close out the discussion by acknowledging that eating habits and body image perceptions go through different seasons and phases, and it’s important to honor each phase as part of the journey. | The Fundamentals of Mind-Body Healing with Nicole Sachs, LCSW | 01 Nov 2021 | 00:56:41
Nicole Sachs, LCSW shares her story and explains this work in the clearest of terms. Topics:
[3:55] Nicole tells her story. At 19 her “back goes out” and she is diagnosed with an abnormality in her lower spine. The doctor warned her there would be no more long car rides, no more sports, and that it was very unlikely she would be able to have children (something she wanted more than anything in the world). She was told that without surgery, she would not live long past 40. Nicole headed back to college and began to live a life of chronic pain and chronic fear. [8:43] Nicole becomes aware of the work of Dr. John Sarno, a revolutionary medical doctor, speaking about how a mind-body connection, our trauma, and the emotional world actually affect us physically. She began exploring case studies and decided to do a science experiment on herself. Wondering with curiosity in place of fear, “Is there more to this than I had known before?” [11:30] Nicole describes freeing herself of chronic pain through Dr. Sarno’s work, JournalSpeak, and understanding the mind-body connection. It has been 20 years since she’s had back pain despite her scans looking exactly as they did when she was 19 years old. Nicole gave birth to 3 beautiful children. She is free. [14:40] Nicole explains the connection between the emotional world and physical world as it pertains not only to chronic pain… and also emotional eating. [17:48] Nicole touches on brain science and how our nervous system chooses chronic pain as an act of love. [21:45] Lisa explains how her work and Nicole’s work are very much the same and how we are connected through human pain. [25:45] Nicole explains how she created her brand and how she came up with “The Cure for Chronic Pain,” even though she believes it is truly, “The Cure for Everything,” and how chronic pain includes not only physical illness but also mental issues like anxiety and/or depression. [30:09] Nicole says the pain is not in your head and is not your fault. Your nervous system is operating in a way to protect you. [32:45] Nicole talks about the influence of Lisa’s work on her own relationship to emotional eating and body image, and how she can observe herself emotionally eating and invites herself to feel her feelings. [34:15] Lisa shares how negative thoughts about her body were a distraction from grieving her father’s impending death. [39:58] Nicole shares what Lisa believes to be a very important concept: “Life is a choice between what hurts and what hurts worse.” [43:45] Lisa and Nicole share about their past and present relationship with emotional eating. [48:13] Nicole gives a quick overview of her work and what it means to “get free.” Resources: Nicole: For More Info and Nicole’s Online Courses and Virtual Retreats: www.thecureforchronicpain.com Listen to “The Cure for Chronic Pain” Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts “The Meaning of Truth” https://www.amazon.com/Meaning-Truth-embrace-truth-create/dp/1482387352 JournalSpeak Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/132748670815140 Lisa: Instagram: www.instagram.com/lisa.schlosberg Join the Community with an Out of the Cave Membership: https://www.outofthecave.health/membership
| My Story: Part 2/2 | 25 Oct 2021 | 00:52:52 | |
Lisa continues and concludes her story. She shares how ultimately, her journey will help you, the listener, heal your own relationship to food, eating, body image, etc. and how this podcast will serve to lead you out of the cave.
Topics:
- Life after weight loss
- How Lisa’s IBS led her closer to the mind-body connection
- How Jon Gabriel and Nicole Sachs impacted Lisa’s healing journey and work
- Maintaining Weight Loss
- Speaking at the Omega Institute
[2:09] Lisa explains what happened after her 150-pound weight loss, including the research she did around holistic, mind-body methods to health. She relied on the support of a therapist and nutritionist, and learned to stabilize her weight as well as her mental and emotional health
[5:54] Lisa deals with one lingering issue, which would later be diagnosed as IBS, and tried tests, medications, many doctors, and different procedures, and no one could give her any answers until she was given a diagnosis of Post Infectious IBS (Presumably due to a bought of diarrhea in Ghana)
[10:09] Lisa copes for years with her diagnosis of IBS and retreats back to her defense of retreat and denial, while underneath feeling very sad and scared. Though her entire life was being affected, she was still riding the high of her dramatic weight loss, including walking and even running comfortably, shopping with ease, and just generally fitting into the world around her
[15:20] Lisa graduated from the University of Michigan, knowing she loved being in the gym and loved helping people. She decided to become a certified personal trainer, not dieting, focusing on mental health and stress reduction, and was amazed to see her weight stabilizing and finally felt an “effortlessness” around food and body
[18:25] Lisa finds herself in a position where she is fully embodying mind-body health, felt she was really onto something, and knew it was becoming clear that food, dieting, and exercise could not heal emotional eating
[20:14] Lisa attends a Jon Gabriel retreat at the Omega Institute in New York, and felt at home but out of place in such a spiritual place because at the time she was completely disconnected to anything that couldn’t be seen, touched, or proven with data
[25:46] The following year Lisa speaks at the retreat and shares her success story from the lens of weight maintenance because she was beating the odds of someone who is defying the statistic that 98% of the people who go on a diet gain the weight back
[27:00] In 2018, Lisa returns to speak at the Omega Institute and meets Nicole Sachs, who was also there to teach about how she helped thousands of people around the entire world heal from chronic pain, including IBS, and was hearing all she had to say until she suggested you could use journaling to cure chronic pain
[32:30] Listening to Nicole, Lisa realizes that her inner work isn’t done despite maintaining her 150 pound weight loss. If we can accept that stress can cause something like a one time headache, why can’t we accept that stress can cause chronic pain?
[37:15] While taking a new look at the onset of her IBS, Lisa thought back to Semester at Sea, where she was too preoccupied with food and eating to be the “life of the party” persona, and for the first time felt awake to her own anxiety, and also, for the first time, felt exposed to the world and saw poverty, illness, heartbreak, death, and struggle
[43:19] Lisa begins doing Nicole’s work and realizes that everything she knew to be true around food and eating was also true around chronic pain, and understanding this work on a cognitive level- while still experiencing some skepticism around things like “drawing her pain”

| Losing 200+ pounds and Keeping It Off with Jon Gabriel | 10 Jun 2024 | 01:00:57 | |
Lisa sits down with the man, the myth, the legend, Jon Gabriel, founder and creator of the Gabriel Method. They discuss how this breathwork addresses mental, emotional, and physical health, offering sustainable and long-term well-being solutions. Topics Include:
[1:00] Lisa introduces her guest, Jon Gabriel, and shares her personal journey of how she met him and became a supporter of his work after initially being resistant to his message and how she knew she needed to work with him. [5:00] Jon Gabriel shares the story about how so many people who are resistant to his work at first become fierce supporters, including several interviewers. Jon goes on to share how he eventually lost 220 pounds without dieting or forcing restriction but by eating healthier. [9:00] Jon talks about his struggle with weight and his experience with various diets, including working face to face with Dr. Atkins. [11:00] Jon explains the Gabriel Method, which focuses on getting the body to want to be thin by working with its survival programs rather than against them. This involves making the body feel safe, not forcing restriction, and how to turn off your fat programs. [17:24] Jon discusses the concept of fat as a survival adaptation and how understanding this can help in creating a sustainable weight loss strategy. Jon contrasts traditional dieting, which often involves forced restriction, with his method that focuses on making the body feel safe and naturally reducing the desire to overeat. Jon and Lisa discuss how fat programs are inherited for survival, particularly in conditions of famine and cold and how our biology interprets different types of stress. Chronic low-grade stress favors fat retention, while acute stress favors being thin. [22:24] Lisa shares her personal experience of losing 150 pounds through diet and exercise, and her initial skepticism towards the idea that diets don’t work. Lisa uses the analogy of holding a volleyball underwater to describe the temporary nature of weight loss through dieting and the challenge of maintaining it. Lisa and Jon talk about the importance of understanding the connection between mind and body in weight management, and how stress and mental state affect physical health. Jon shares a personal anecdote about working on Wall Street and gaining 200 pounds due to stress, contrasting with a colleague who lost weight under the same conditions. [36:16] Jon talks about how he felt like he didn’t want to gain anymore weight and took a leap of faith and began his health journey with getting his sleep apnea addressed and real rest lowered his cortisol levels and how through that he lost 120 pounds without making any lifestyle changes. [42:12] Jon talks about the effectiveness of visualization in weight loss, and how it helped him achieve his goals. [56:53] Lisa and Jon emphasize that safety is the baseline for sustainable weight loss. The body needs to feel safe mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, and physically to lose weight effectively. Both Jon and Lisa discuss the importance of a daily meditation practice. [1:00:00] Lisa and Jon close out the discussion with their excitement about seeing each other at the Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute and how to find Jon online: Jon Gabriel Instagram, The Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute, and The Gabriel Method website. *The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC. The conversation continues as Muna describes her experiences with disordered eating, specifically bingeing, purging, and later developing a restrictive relationship with food, intertwined with addictive marijuana use. They discuss the transformative journey of healing one’s relationship with food and body image, emphasizing the importance of self-compassion, community support, and mindful eating. Topics Include:
[1:43] Lisa and Wendy begin the conversation with Wendy sharing that food was not a significant issue in early childhood, though her mom was strict about certain foods like potato chips to avoid getting fat. [7:29] Wendy and Lisa discuss how media and cartoons in the 80s often portrayed fat characters negatively, reinforcing the stigma around being overweight. Lisa elaborates on how societal messages teach children that being fat is undesirable, often without questioning these beliefs. Wendy recalls avoiding eating in front of others, especially boys, due to fear of being judged for her weight. [19:12] Wendy discusses coming out of her shell in junior high and high school, finding confidence through theater, and noticing friends’ eating habits. Wendy realized around age 14 that some people restrict food to control her weight, and shared an incident where she unintentionally spread a rumor about a friend’s eating habits. Wendy describes feeling insecure about her body, avoiding wearing revealing clothes, and not wanting to see herself in the mirror. [25:38] Wendy talks about using food, such as fat-free blueberry muffins, as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety during college. Wendy and Lisa talk about the conflict between wanting to eat for comfort and not wanting to gain weight, even considering extreme measures like a tapeworm. [38:13] Wendy discussed the impact of her mother’s illness and how she stopped eating due to her mother’s inability to eat, leading to significant weight loss and a lack of energy.
