Episode 41. Stick It Out
Season 2 · Episode 41
samedi 14 septembre 2024 • Duration 01:59:03
Welcome to Season 2! Ummm...uh...yeah...it's the 4:20 episode with Malcolm MacKinnon, Photographer and Editor for High Times Magazine in it's glory days. It's a cue the 500mg gummie-puck and THC infused seltzer episode...and all that that implies.
From a time when it was an outlaw thing to do, to photograph the country's best pot for the centerfold in High Times Magazine! Malcolm was editor in the magazine's marijuana hey-dey, it was the bible of the counter-culture for nearly 50 years. But like all things, time, money, and, uh...never mind. We get a serious contact high from the inside out with this candid walk down memory lane. What can you say, the grass is always green, but not necessarily greener in a place like that. You be the judge on this revealing episode - too good to give away with bulletpoints! Oh - we did at least remember dig deep into the connection between High Times and Rush. And Malcolm shares many other details from his fascinating career as a traveling pot journalist.
The wheel gives us Stick It Out off 1993’s Counterparts. Again, the voting turns out in surprising ways, this time with Schatz pulling a double take move, and as we know, that's always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest.
We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. We even give a shout-out to our sponsors Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai in an even betterer treatment than last time. More games, merriment, and pointing you all to this list of current links, it's...

Episode 40. Kid Gloves
Season 1 · Episode 40
dimanche 8 septembre 2024 • Duration 01:49:04
In another neposode, Chaz and Schatz welcome Gary “G-Mann” Baumann of Steel Revenge, the band he’s in with Chaz. Gary has a long history playing bass and guitar in bands in and around Northern Colorado for most of his life, and has the stories to go with it.
Join us for a great journey back through the glory days of the Colorado rock scene from the inside out. Gary waxes nostalgic dropping some pretty big names, as well as a few brain farts along the way. We hear about:
- Turning a family cow into brand new Epiphone
- Being a roadie and sound guy in and around Denver
- Being left a schedule one present from the opening act that ROCKED anything he’d ever seen
- Opening for rock’s biggest Canadian trio in our humble cow-town in the late 70’s
- “Making $14 the hard way” as a working musician in Denver in the 70’s, 80’s, and today
- Being the guy who owns the PA, and all that implies
- Making music with family, friends, and world-class musicians in the Rocky Mountain west
Gary's fond memories of fun and good times make for a down-home evening of well-spun rememberences of a music scean more active than you might think from the outside looking in.
The wheel gives us Kid Gloves off 1984’s Grace Under Pressure, a song we generally knew, er...some of us...one of us at least. The voting turns out in surprising ways, which is always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest.
We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. We even give a shout-out to ol’ Martin Popoff, and we give our sponsors Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai a new treatment. More games, merriment, and...

Chaz N Schatz get another first-of-a-kind: an Outbreak Case 2112! His RushRash was lying in remission till this Rushian heard he was invited to be on RushRash and BAMN - RushRash shingles! Itch on!! Join Chaz N Schatz as they step back through time to reconnect with musician and recording artist Allan Day of Ashville, North Carolina's The Discs.
Allan goes way back as a Rush fan and friend of both Chaz and Schatz. The conversation takes a bunch of wild rides back in time to explore Allan's musical journey as an artist and his love of Rush. We shake the cobwebs out of our memories and relive some of the glory days of The Passaic Street Stooges. You'll hear all about things like:
- Playing music and analog recording with real instruments (imagine that).
- Leading the Saturday and Sunday afternoon jam sessions in NYC's Washington Square Park with his good friends.
- Launching into "I Saw The Light" when they spotted Todd Rundgren in the crowd, and how that landed with him...
- Getting to see every tour since Hemispheres, and being front row at the Nassau County Collesium.
- Memories of kimonos and camel toes live and up close.
- The music of his band The Discs.
- The tonal qualities of cucumbers, jumbo carrots, and watermelons.
The wheel delivers Allan's favorite track of 1981's epic album Moving Pictures, The Camera Eye. We name-drop all our usual suspects from rushvault.com, but not so much rushisaband.com or our fantabulous sponsor, Danforth & Pape. It's another marathon hang for the record books, and yet again proof positive that we belong on the Deep Dive Podcast Network!
We just keep giving you more and more and more. Don't forget Schatz's Scratch List - go scratch with these bands live!

Episode 29. YYZ
Season 2 · Episode 29
dimanche 5 mai 2024 • Duration 02:20:53
It’s Rock and Roll Literacy Month at RushRash with the next up in our author-related series, Chaz N Schatz connect with epic rock and roll commentator, podcast host and expert talking head from the Van Halen News Desk, Eric Senich.
"Chaz and AJ" visit with the man behind the VHND...he's a news curator, and he also hosts the podcast Booked on Rock. From sports writing to college radio to a "Prestige gig" as Fletch on overnight radio at WCCC in New Haven, we get the inside scoop on the man many know only for his encyclopedic knowledge of Van Halen. And given our hosts' penchant for all things EVH, the conversation takes many subdivisions along the way. Join our hosts as they dive in on tidbits so juicy, Schatz needs a DudeWipe to recover. Join us as we get the DL on...
- His path to a radio career that started with Hogan’s Heroes' Bob Crane and ended up with him being paid “big money” to sit on his ass all day on WCCC in CT.
- Introducing Collective Soul to 3,000 fans live in person.
- Becoming the curator of VHND.com – the Van Halen News Desk.
- The physical toll of reading up to 3 books a week, keeping a full-time job, taking care of VHND.com, and producing his podcast.
- Meeting David Lee Roth, Jack White, linking pinkies and stealing DLR’s unfinished bottle of Jack Daniels in a crazy NYC night.
- The conspiracy behind VHND’s “coverage” of Alex Van Halen’s new book and the breaking news scoop on the reason the drumming doesn’t exactly sound like AVH on Van Halen III.
- Mike Post’s inability to produce a sober guitar virtuoso and his lack of knowledge regarding the ranking of the world’s top 3 rock drummers…but we digress.
- Daryl Hall’s really big hair and how it’s getting in the way of John Oats’ ability to keep his music out of porn.
- The behind-the-scenes connection between Van Halen and Rush and someone’s brother-in-law.
- Meeting rockstars, taking deep dives in discussions with authors, taking quotes from David Lee Roth and living a life of rock and roll podcaster.
- And how to get 20% off a balls shave at manscape.com with an exclusive code!!
The conversation is as diverse as Eric's background, with so much ground covered we needed a breadtrail to find our way back to Rush, but we did it, and the wheel rewarded our hard work by delivering YYZ, our first track of the epic album Moving Pictures from 1981. We name-drop all our usual suspects from rushvault.com, rushisaband.com and of course our wondiferous sponsor, Danforth & Pape. This is a conversation for the record books, and a primary reason RushRash is at home on the Deep Dive Podcast Network!

Episode 28. Bravest Face
Season 1 · Episode 28
dimanche 28 avril 2024 • Duration 02:05:47
Its Author-palooza continued this week as Chaz N Schatz spend time with The Sexiest Man in Podcasting, author, composer, drummer, and stunner, Scott K. Haskin, live from the strip in Las Vegas!
Scott is a veritable renaissance man of the arts, this guy doesn’t just wear multiple hats; he’s practically a one-man band and literary powerhouse rolled into one. Many know Scott from his show Uriah Heep: The Magician’s Podcast, and his many guest appearances on And The Podcast Will Rock, The Deep Purple Podcast, and The Ultimate Catalog Clash but today, we get to know more about Scott the artist, visionary and creator. From the 404 episodes of the haskincast to the hilariously observant What Happened In Vegas… book series, enquiring minds get to know more than they ever thought of the Sexiest Man in Podcasting – he’s more than just a silky voice…
- Dive deep into his 30 years of composing, his 30 albums and numerous film scores.
- Get the low-down and hear some of his Prog-Metal band Arapacis rock out.
- Go way back with Scott on Rush opening for Uriah Heep in 1975.
- Geek-out with heavy metal otamatone, the next genre Scott plans to dominate.
- Hear how to turn people watching into profit on the Vegas Strip (without having to show any leg!)
- Dig on how he came to discover he himself is two-degrees separated from Rush via Max Webster and his band Arapacis.
- Exposed as a man with a genuine guitar pedal fetish, and what it means to play with your Zoom.
A true jack of all trades and master of many, Scott gets a track off 2007’s Snakes and Arrows, the rollercoaster ride called Bravest Face. Join Chaz N Schatz as they sit with Scott through his first listen to this complex track, and wonder at his wonder in it all.
We name-drop all our usual suspects from rushvault.com, rushisaband.com and of course our wondiferous sponsor, Danforth & Pape. What happens on this episode, stays on this episode of RushRash!
And finally, we remember the late Joe Flaherty, Count Floyd of SCTV and Rush Shorts fame in a scary look back at his Grace Under Pressure tour performance. And for goodness sake, don’t forget Schatz's Scratch List - go scratch with these bands live!

Episode 27. How It Is
Season 1 · Episode 27
dimanche 21 avril 2024 • Duration 02:03:49
What happens when you end up having to reschedule Ffej Herb, drummer from award-winning Rush Tribute Band Solar Federation twice? You get a whole lot to catch up on!
With a grudge against our song wheel and a shit-ton of stuff going on, Ffej assumes control and gives Chaz n Schatz the skinny on all the interplanetary action with Solar Federation:
- Working with Moving Pictures' Steve "That IS a veggie-haggis in my pocket!" Brown to collaborate with legendary Rush producer Terry Brown on the recording of Witch Hunt.
- Recording with Rush album cover artist Hugh Syme, who also played keys on the original track off the iconic Moving Pictures.
- Playing for larger and larger crowds and winning the award for best tribute band in all of central Pensylvania for the second time.
- Planning set list changes, new song additions, what it took to get to the level he's at today and what it takes to stay in shape and keep music muscle memory in top form.
- Partying and playing at F50 - Ffej's 50th birthday bash / concert.
With an axe to grind on our Wheel of Lamneth, Ffej says Mulligans be damned and we spin the oddly upbeat How It Is off 2002's otherwise dark Vapor Trails. The music talk Schatz was looking to have the first visit with Ffej finally has a chance to breathe as we explore the finer points of drumming appreciation 101.
As always, we name drop all of our favorite websites and we might not say it outright, but we're always thinking about our kick-ass sponsor Danforth & Pape. We play the usual games, plug the hell out of our Scratch List, and hear from The No Waaaayyy guy for the first time in a hot minute! Episode 26. Cut to the Chase
Season 1 · Episode 26
dimanche 14 avril 2024 • Duration 02:09:14
It was the best of times, it was the hella best time as we unwind the Tale of Two McGinitys. This week finds Chaz N Schatz visiting with the brothers Sean "SeanGeek" and Todd “FastFret” McGinity, two podcasting Canucks with a love of Rush as strong as their disdain for Anne Murray.
SeanGeek and FastFret, as they are known to their legions of fans, are a hella talented pair of brothers who've been forcing themselves to hang out together and podcast nearly ten bloody years, and they've been playing music and they've been huge Rush fans since they were old enough to watch and barely comprehend what was really happening when one gets slimed on You Can't Do That on Television!
- Hear all about Djent as a musical genre and jam firsthand with tracks from their band Dome.
- Find out why Anne Murray wears knee pads and get the rumors on how the Queen of Laxrock became a housewhore name.
- Reminisce on memories of hearing Rush under the door and falling in love with our band by extension of someone else's obsession.
- We validate that all Canadians know Rush...them, and The Tragically Hip, butt not so much the Hothouse Flowers (the band, not the venereal disease).
SeanGeek and FastFret teach Chaz N Schatz a thing or two about holding a podversation as the topics get diverse and the music analysis gets personal.
The wheel serves up Cut to the Chase off 1993's Counterparts, and as always, there's the "surprise" of the voting outcomes at the end of any great effin song that rocks as hard as this one.
As always, we name drop all of our favorite websites and our kick-ass sponsor Danforth & Pape. We also plug the hell out of our Scratch List, and get the first Schatz's Scratch Twister contestant to compete in French! Mon Dieu! Check out these great bands playing near you!

Episode 25. Grand Designs
Season 1 · Episode 25
dimanche 7 avril 2024 • Duration 01:40:24
Chaz and Schatz are thrilled to present our continuing Rushian Author Series. Fresh in the footsteps of Kevin J. Anderson, we get another long-standing Case 2112 in the Rush Rash Containment Unit - author, personal pilot, and overall Rush devotee Len Roberto.
Len is a Rush fan from way back who published an indie book for himself and his friends: A Simple Kind Mirror: The Lyrical Vision of Rush. Like most things done with the best intent, his labor-of-love book took on a life of its own with the Rush community. We hear how recently departed Rush "family" member and SRO/Anthem VP Pegi Cecconi blessed his published use of Rush lyrics in his prose. And we take a trip down memory lane through Len's 14 prized Rush concert ticket stubs, so hey, not just that, but so much more:
- How Neil inspired Len the English Major to write and how his Rush book took on a life of its own.
- The fourteen shows Len attended and his recollections of their first show back after their hiatus in 2002 in Hartford, CT.
- All the elements of what makes The Garden a great Rush song and way for the band to sunset.
Join Chaz and Schatz as they visit with Len and get the skinny on what makes Len tick, particularly as a writer, a reader of all things in the Peartian lexicon, and a Rushian like us.
We spin the keyboard-driven "Grand Designs" from 1985's Power Windows, and enjoy...a lot of keyboards. Really. We like keyboards!!
We name-drop Bill Levine, Greg "Wolfie" Wolfe, Joe Cruz, Steve Brown, Solar Federation, YYNOT and an ongoing stream of other luminaries. With Len's help, we do the usual dive into the news and score a sweet-ass namedrop for our bitchin’ sponsor Danforth and Pape. We might have missed the reference to the 2006 compilation Rush Gold, but we drew in a great tie-in for Danforth & Pape's bitchin' T-Shirt shop and facebook page – check them out at Facebook.com slash Danforth & Pape!! Episode 24. Turn The Page
Season 1 · Episode 24
dimanche 24 mars 2024 • Duration 02:05:15
In an entirely excellent episode, Chaz n Schatz take in their first bonafide Case 2113 in having renowned Sci-Fi and Steampunk author Kevin J. Anderson wind up in the Containment Unit. With over 180 books published, 50 of which being US and International Bestsellers, and upwards of 23 million books in print, he also happens to be a certifiable Rushian.
His Rushian credentials date back more than 30 years in the form of his mutual fandom and appreciation club co-conspirator Neil Peart, with whom Kevin had an endearing friendship and creative partnership, from the first night Neil crashed on his couch in 1989, to their collaboration on the Clockwork Angels album and novelization, up through and until the time of Neil's untimely passing in January 2020.
In what is surely a conversation Kevin could never have had with his good friend, he discusses his fanboy journey with Rush, from being a farm boy with a penchant for annoying music and pictures of Cannuks in Kimonos on his bedroom wall to the personal letters from Neil describing in "Peartian detail" the wilds of Africa. Kevin's love and friendship for Neil are genuine and heartfelt. He shares freely with the Rush community the recollections of his friend, sharing stories closer to his heart:
- The first correspondence of kindred spirits (and other-nerdly connections)
- The time Neil had to play Red Rocks Amphitheater in Kevin's Father-in-law's trousers
- The publisher that refused to believe Kevin knew "the drummer of Rush", and how Neil helped Kevin prove he did
- The journey from farmboy-fanboy to the guy who could tell the greatest drummer in the world not to "harsh his mellow" with his drumming self-critique after an excellent Rush show
Kevin's gush of love for all things Rush extends to his appreciation for excellent tribute bands that maintain the band's high standard of performance, having been to both the Bubba Bashes, and traveling to see some of the nation's premiere Rush Tribute bands, such as Rush Archives, Rash, and others!
Join Chaz n Schatz for a one-degree of separation special and excellent Case 2113 event, an exclusive only available with your paid RushRash prescription! Pull my finger and pinch me...did that just happen?!?! Excellent!
In typical Peartian style, we spin "Turn The Page" from 1987's Hold Your Fire, yet again amazed at how that wheel chooses to express itself...
We do the usual dive into the news, and yet a-fekin'-gain forget to namedrop our bitchin’ sponsor Danforth and Pape. but again, we strongly urge you dig on the Rush inspired T-Shirts at their excellent facebook page – Danforth & Pape.
