| Episode 41. Stick It Out | 14 Sep 2024 | 01:59:03 | |
Welcome to Season 2! Ummm...uh...yeah...it's the 4:20 episode with Malcolm MacKinnon, Photographer and Editor for High Times Magazine in it's glory days. It's a cue the 500mg gummie-puck and THC infused seltzer episode...and all that that implies. From a time when it was an outlaw thing to do, to photograph the country's best pot for the centerfold in High Times Magazine! Malcolm was editor in the magazine's marijuana hey-dey, it was the bible of the counter-culture for nearly 50 years. But like all things, time, money, and, uh...never mind. We get a serious contact high from the inside out with this candid walk down memory lane. What can you say, the grass is always green, but not necessarily greener in a place like that. You be the judge on this revealing episode - too good to give away with bulletpoints! Oh - we did at least remember dig deep into the connection between High Times and Rush. And Malcolm shares many other details from his fascinating career as a traveling pot journalist. The wheel gives us Stick It Out off 1993’s Counterparts. Again, the voting turns out in surprising ways, this time with Schatz pulling a double take move, and as we know, that's always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest. We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. We even give a shout-out to our sponsors Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai in an even betterer treatment than last time. | Episode 40. Kid Gloves | 08 Sep 2024 | 01:49:04
In another neposode, Chaz and Schatz welcome Gary “G-Mann” Baumann of Steel Revenge, the band he’s in with Chaz. Gary has a long history playing bass and guitar in bands in and around Northern Colorado for most of his life, and has the stories to go with it. Join us for a great journey back through the glory days of the Colorado rock scene from the inside out. Gary waxes nostalgic dropping some pretty big names, as well as a few brain farts along the way. We hear about: - Turning a family cow into brand new Epiphone - Being a roadie and sound guy in and around Denver - Being left a schedule one present from the opening act that ROCKED anything he’d ever seen - Opening for rock’s biggest Canadian trio in our humble cow-town in the late 70’s - “Making $14 the hard way” as a working musician in Denver in the 70’s, 80’s, and today - Being the guy who owns the PA, and all that implies - Making music with family, friends, and world-class musicians in the Rocky Mountain west Gary's fond memories of fun and good times make for a down-home evening of well-spun rememberences of a music scean more active than you might think from the outside looking in. The wheel gives us Kid Gloves off 1984’s Grace Under Pressure, a song we generally knew, er...some of us...one of us at least. The voting turns out in surprising ways, which is always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest. We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. It’s Rock and Roll Literacy Month at RushRash with the next up in our author-related series, Chaz N Schatz connect with epic rock and roll commentator, podcast host and expert talking head from the Van Halen News Desk, Eric Senich. "Chaz and AJ" visit with the man behind the VHND...he's a news curator, and he also hosts the podcast Booked on Rock. From sports writing to college radio to a "Prestige gig" as Fletch on overnight radio at WCCC in New Haven, we get the inside scoop on the man many know only for his encyclopedic knowledge of Van Halen. And given our hosts' penchant for all things EVH, the conversation takes many subdivisions along the way. Join our hosts as they dive in on tidbits so juicy, Schatz needs a DudeWipe to recover. Join us as we get the DL on... - His path to a radio career that started with Hogan’s Heroes' Bob Crane and ended up with him being paid “big money” to sit on his ass all day on WCCC in CT. - Introducing Collective Soul to 3,000 fans live in person. - Becoming the curator of VHND.com – the Van Halen News Desk. - The physical toll of reading up to 3 books a week, keeping a full-time job, taking care of VHND.com, and producing his podcast. - Meeting David Lee Roth, Jack White, linking pinkies and stealing DLR’s unfinished bottle of Jack Daniels in a crazy NYC night. - The conspiracy behind VHND’s “coverage” of Alex Van Halen’s new book and the breaking news scoop on the reason the drumming doesn’t exactly sound like AVH on Van Halen III. - Mike Post’s inability to produce a sober guitar virtuoso and his lack of knowledge regarding the ranking of the world’s top 3 rock drummers…but we digress. - Daryl Hall’s really big hair and how it’s getting in the way of John Oats’ ability to keep his music out of porn. - The behind-the-scenes connection between Van Halen and Rush and someone’s brother-in-law. - Meeting rockstars, taking deep dives in discussions with authors, taking quotes from David Lee Roth and living a life of rock and roll podcaster. - And how to get 20% off a balls shave at manscape.com with an exclusive code!! The conversation is as diverse as Eric's background, with so much ground covered we needed a breadtrail to find our way back to Rush, but we did it, and the wheel rewarded our hard work by delivering YYZ, our first track of the epic album Moving Pictures from 1981. We name-drop all our usual suspects from rushvault.com, rushisaband.com and of course our wondiferous sponsor, Danforth & Pape. This is a conversation for the record books, and a primary reason RushRash is at home on the Deep Dive Podcast Network! It may have been a long episode, but we made it longer by including Schatz's Scratch List - go scratch with these bands live!

| Episode 28. Bravest Face | 28 Apr 2024 | 02:05:47 | |
Its Author-palooza continued this week as Chaz N Schatz spend time with The Sexiest Man in Podcasting, author, composer, drummer, and stunner, Scott K. Haskin, live from the strip in Las Vegas! Scott is a veritable renaissance man of the arts, this guy doesn’t just wear multiple hats; he’s practically a one-man band and literary powerhouse rolled into one. Many know Scott from his show Uriah Heep: The Magician’s Podcast, and his many guest appearances on And The Podcast Will Rock, The Deep Purple Podcast, and The Ultimate Catalog Clash but today, we get to know more about Scott the artist, visionary and creator. From the 404 episodes of the haskincast to the hilariously observant What Happened In Vegas… book series, enquiring minds get to know more than they ever thought of the Sexiest Man in Podcasting – he’s more than just a silky voice… - Dive deep into his 30 years of composing, his 30 albums and numerous film scores. - Get the low-down and hear some of his Prog-Metal band Arapacis rock out. - Go way back with Scott on Rush opening for Uriah Heep in 1975. - Geek-out with heavy metal otamatone, the next genre Scott plans to dominate. - Hear how to turn people watching into profit on the Vegas Strip (without having to show any leg!) - Dig on how he came to discover he himself is two-degrees separated from Rush via Max Webster and his band Arapacis. - Exposed as a man with a genuine guitar pedal fetish, and what it means to play with your Zoom. A true jack of all trades and master of many, Scott gets a track off 2007’s Snakes and Arrows, the rollercoaster ride called Bravest Face. Join Chaz N Schatz as they sit with Scott through his first listen to this complex track, and wonder at his wonder in it all. We name-drop all our usual suspects from rushvault.com, rushisaband.com and of course our wondiferous sponsor, Danforth & Pape. What happens on this episode, stays on this episode of RushRash! And finally, we remember the late Joe Flaherty, Count Floyd of SCTV and Rush Shorts fame in a scary look back at his Grace Under Pressure tour performance. | Episode 27. How It Is | 21 Apr 2024 | 02:03:49
What happens when you end up having to reschedule Ffej Herb, drummer from award-winning Rush Tribute Band Solar Federation twice? You get a whole lot to catch up on! With a grudge against our song wheel and a shit-ton of stuff going on, Ffej assumes control and gives Chaz n Schatz the skinny on all the interplanetary action with Solar Federation: - Working with Moving Pictures' Steve "That IS a veggie-haggis in my pocket!" Brown to collaborate with legendary Rush producer Terry Brown on the recording of Witch Hunt. - Recording with Rush album cover artist Hugh Syme, who also played keys on the original track off the iconic Moving Pictures. - Playing for larger and larger crowds and winning the award for best tribute band in all of central Pensylvania for the second time. - Planning set list changes, new song additions, what it took to get to the level he's at today and what it takes to stay in shape and keep music muscle memory in top form. - Partying and playing at F50 - Ffej's 50th birthday bash / concert. With an axe to grind on our Wheel of Lamneth, Ffej says Mulligans be damned and we spin the oddly upbeat How It Is off 2002's otherwise dark Vapor Trails. The music talk Schatz was looking to have the first visit with Ffej finally has a chance to breathe as we explore the finer points of drumming appreciation 101. As always, we name drop all of our favorite websites and we might not say it outright, but we're always thinking about our kick-ass sponsor Danforth & Pape. | Episode 26. Cut to the Chase | 14 Apr 2024 | 02:09:14
It was the best of times, it was the hella best time as we unwind the Tale of Two McGinitys. This week finds Chaz N Schatz visiting with the brothers Sean "SeanGeek" and Todd “FastFret” McGinity, two podcasting Canucks with a love of Rush as strong as their disdain for Anne Murray. SeanGeek and FastFret, as they are known to their legions of fans, are a hella talented pair of brothers who've been forcing themselves to hang out together and podcast nearly ten bloody years, and they've been playing music and they've been huge Rush fans since they were old enough to watch and barely comprehend what was really happening when one gets slimed on You Can't Do That on Television! - Hear all about Djent as a musical genre and jam firsthand with tracks from their band Dome. - Find out why Anne Murray wears knee pads and get the rumors on how the Queen of Laxrock became a housewhore name. - Reminisce on memories of hearing Rush under the door and falling in love with our band by extension of someone else's obsession. - We validate that all Canadians know Rush...them, and The Tragically Hip, butt not so much the Hothouse Flowers (the band, not the venereal disease). SeanGeek and FastFret teach Chaz N Schatz a thing or two about holding a podversation as the topics get diverse and the music analysis gets personal. The wheel serves up Cut to the Chase off 1993's Counterparts, and as always, there's the "surprise" of the voting outcomes at the end of any great effin song that rocks as hard as this one. As always, we name drop all of our favorite websites and our kick-ass sponsor Danforth & Pape. | Episode 25. Grand Designs | 07 Apr 2024 | 01:40:24
Chaz and Schatz are thrilled to present our continuing Rushian Author Series. Fresh in the footsteps of Kevin J. Anderson, we get another long-standing Case 2112 in the Rush Rash Containment Unit - author, personal pilot, and overall Rush devotee Len Roberto. Len is a Rush fan from way back who published an indie book for himself and his friends: A Simple Kind Mirror: The Lyrical Vision of Rush. Like most things done with the best intent, his labor-of-love book took on a life of its own with the Rush community. We hear how recently departed Rush "family" member and SRO/Anthem VP Pegi Cecconi blessed his published use of Rush lyrics in his prose. And we take a trip down memory lane through Len's 14 prized Rush concert ticket stubs, so hey, not just that, but so much more: - How Neil inspired Len the English Major to write and how his Rush book took on a life of its own. - The fourteen shows Len attended and his recollections of their first show back after their hiatus in 2002 in Hartford, CT. - All the elements of what makes The Garden a great Rush song and way for the band to sunset. Join Chaz and Schatz as they visit with Len and get the skinny on what makes Len tick, particularly as a writer, a reader of all things in the Peartian lexicon, and a Rushian like us. We spin the keyboard-driven "Grand Designs" from 1985's Power Windows, and enjoy...a lot of keyboards. Really. We like keyboards!! We name-drop Bill Levine, Greg "Wolfie" Wolfe, Joe Cruz, Steve Brown, Solar Federation, YYNOT and an ongoing stream of other luminaries. With Len's help, we do the usual dive into the news and score a sweet-ass namedrop for our bitchin’ sponsor Danforth and Pape. We might have missed the reference to the 2006 compilation Rush Gold, but we drew in a great tie-in for Danforth & Pape's bitchin' T-Shirt shop and facebook page – check them out at Facebook.com slash Danforth & Pape!! | Episode 24. Turn The Page | 24 Mar 2024 | 02:05:15
In an entirely excellent episode, Chaz n Schatz take in their first bonafide Case 2113 in having renowned Sci-Fi and Steampunk author Kevin J. Anderson wind up in the Containment Unit. With over 180 books published, 50 of which being US and International Bestsellers, and upwards of 23 million books in print, he also happens to be a certifiable Rushian. His Rushian credentials date back more than 30 years in the form of his mutual fandom and appreciation club co-conspirator Neil Peart, with whom Kevin had an endearing friendship and creative partnership, from the first night Neil crashed on his couch in 1989, to their collaboration on the Clockwork Angels album and novelization, up through and until the time of Neil's untimely passing in January 2020. In what is surely a conversation Kevin could never have had with his good friend, he discusses his fanboy journey with Rush, from being a farm boy with a penchant for annoying music and pictures of Cannuks in Kimonos on his bedroom wall to the personal letters from Neil describing in "Peartian detail" the wilds of Africa. Kevin's love and friendship for Neil are genuine and heartfelt. He shares freely with the Rush community the recollections of his friend, sharing stories closer to his heart: - The first correspondence of kindred spirits (and other-nerdly connections) - The time Neil had to play Red Rocks Amphitheater in Kevin's Father-in-law's trousers - The publisher that refused to believe Kevin knew "the drummer of Rush", and how Neil helped Kevin prove he did - The journey from farmboy-fanboy to the guy who could tell the greatest drummer in the world not to "harsh his mellow" with his drumming self-critique after an excellent Rush show Kevin's gush of love for all things Rush extends to his appreciation for excellent tribute bands that maintain the band's high standard of performance, having been to both the Bubba Bashes, and traveling to see some of the nation's premiere Rush Tribute bands, such as Rush Archives, Rash, and others! Join Chaz n Schatz for a one-degree of separation special and excellent Case 2113 event, an exclusive only available with your paid RushRash prescription! Pull my finger and pinch me...did that just happen?!?! Excellent! In typical Peartian style, we spin "Turn The Page" from 1987's Hold Your Fire, yet again amazed at how that wheel chooses to express itself... Season one - Regarding Lulu - heard them puking in their shoes every two weeks to the sounds of Lou Reed & Metallica's 2011 album Lulu. Season two - Regarding Roger - as in Roger Waters and what the fu<k he’s done to re-record the Pink Floyd masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon. Regarding Roger is an 11-episode listen through The Dark Side of The Moon Redux, listening one track at a time, in a chemically-minted compare and contrast format, listening the the original and the redux tracks back to back, and talking up a shit-storm in-between. Wolfie takes us through the album, reminisces about his favorite moments, and scratches his Rush itch with us. You’re effin nuts if you miss this exploration in mental agility. RED ALERT! RED ALERT! We process our first genuine Case 2-1-1-2, with Jim “The Friendly Face” Brunke - Steam Punk, Rush Rat, and co-founder of Overtime Angels and the famed Rush Camps! Jim’s Rush journey is quite unlike any other. Having seen the band over 100 times up through R40, Jim’s a passionate guy with a big heart for helping people get a leg up. His philanthropic efforts aside, he’s been up close and personal with more Rushians than anyone we’ve met, having logged thousands of miles, domestically and internationally to see the band do that thing it does, even that thing dey doo in The Camera Eye -> New York to London…the guys is whacked…he’s personally known to the guys, yep, all of them, having spent time drinking with the two who like to socialize up on the train tracks around someplace in Toronto…and he’s got Ricky & Bubbles’ approval, eh! Talking with tour managers, having his personal pictures signed, talking up his effin hat, having Geddy ask him about his facial hair, pulling Alex’s finger (that’s what Bubbles said), having and incredible network of friends and the love of a woman, family, and community who’ve all scratched it live with him and Rush too, Jim is a man benefitting from them angels working overtime in his life, fo' sho…keeping the flame burning! Luke is a drummer, a sound engineer, and an all-around great guy from a very musical family back East. Musical memories past and present, bands that have been a part of Luke's journey, as well as a forgotten bass player (apologies to our own Gary!) | Episode 16. Rivendell | 18 Dec 2023 | 01:58:25
It's a helluva week at RushRash HQ, with one of the worst cases we've ever taken in - Ffej Herb, drummer of the legendary Solar Federation. Not only is he and his band known to be note-for-note recreationists, but fuck if we don't spin one of the only tunes in the entire catalog wit no effin drums! No shit - we spin the Toilkin inspired Rivendell off Fly By Night and just proceed to shit ourselves in a very decisive vote at the end...but that's not what it's ALL about is it?! Of course not, cuddlecakes. We learn everything about Ffej's journey to creating one of the Northeast's premiere Rush full-on-Kevin's-mom musical and audio-visual celebrations. This guy has seen Rush twenty-fukin-seven times, can play nearly half the entire catalog (just hasn't gotten to the rest yet!!) and knows whuts-whut with good music, from Rush and beyond. Ffej is a good sport as we slog through one of Rush's most...interesting in a Hobbit kinda way...tracks. So grab your rock and roll Rainstick and your enchanted Shillelagh and jam with us on a fairy-tastic edition of Rush Rash. How did the boys vote - do you really need to ask? They talked so much they blew right past the news, and so what you get is a very blah, blah, blah, with invitations extended to have Ffej back because we talk so effin much we didn't get to anywhere near everything we could with him. | Episode 13. 2112 | 22 Nov 2023 | 02:07:55
Chaz N Schatz end up tripping over their amps and drumsticks with guest phenom, Freddy Mercury Award Winner and Yamaha and PRS endorsed Recording Artist Leoni Jane Kennedy, whose in-fact got the Rush Rash case we weren't prepared to handle - so severe, Steve Brown of Tena Men's Rushfest Scotland caught a new variant from her! Her Rush Rash stretches back deep in her creative genesis, and she shares some pretty deep shit with us. The Containment Unit couldn't contain her talent or inspiration and dedication to all things Rush. She is a true force of nature and maybe the coolest kid to show up to your AV Club. We dive deep on her academic achievements, her new album New World Woman - an acoustic collection of songs penned by the world's greatest drummer - but there isn't a drum beat on it! Her musical roots, her road mates, tales of inspiration, dedication, study, and a voice of pure, haunting starlight. Join us as Leoni takes control of the Solar Federation for a spin of the cosmic wheel. You will not fucking believe that we ended up with 2112, particularly given where we start... DISCLAIMER: WE DID NOT RIG, FIX, PUT A DOOKIE UNDER THE SCALE OR OTHERWISE TAMPER WITH THE WHEEL SPIN - WE GOT FUCKING INTEGRITY - LIKE LEONI SAID, "IT IS WHAT IT FEKN IS". So the place might have reeked of Macallan and beat cigarettes, Steve Brown's Moving Pictures Scotland' Brand Veggie Haggis, and discarded Tena Men's pants (the UK meaning of "pants" ya wankers!!)...but Leoni handled it better than that tough French-Canadian dude Matt we had in there last week! The talent in the Rush Family knows no bounds! Leoni knows Danforth & Pape, and while we *eh* may not have discussed it on the air...it was discussed that there is such great merch at Danforth & Pape's Facebook page, you're nuts not to get there and buy some pre-show party apparel before going to see Leoni play at the Hard Rock Cafe Glasgow prior to Geddy's Effin Book Tour appearance! We do take 2112 and dive into song facts, numerology, the maths, the memories and even song insights from RushVault.com, but there was no Rush news from Rush Is A Band Blog on our agenda this week...we were having too much fun geeking out with Leoni on her degrees, music, math, her mum, her music teachers and more. What would Leoni decree if she was placed in charge of said Solar Federation for a day? Tune in to find out, but don't pull a finger in her direction on the next cross-country flight...and we thought we'd need cross-gender training for her treatment! The Rush Rash Treatment is universal! Yep - we blah, blah, blah'ed for over an hour before the wheel spun 2112 - all 20:33 glorious seconds of it. Guess how we voted this one...and you know our format - so grab a rocket ship, kick back and take a ride with us and Leoni, for a more epic than our last epic music-nerd fest of an epic, fekn awesome episode of Rush Rash. | Episode 12. Chemistry | 15 Nov 2023 | 01:27:04
Chaz N Schatz find themselves with another severe case of Rush Rash - this one seemingly as bad if not worse than anything we've seen so far. Drummer and Singer Matt Grou of Quebec's New World Men! The Containment Unit might have still been a little on the rank side after Steve Brown from Moving Pictures UK's last treatment, but Matt put up with the Vegi-Haggis and Poopourri afterglow like the tough French-Canadian he is! Matt is 1/3 of a powerhouse Rush full-frontal, multi-media experience. Full Monty ain't got nothin' on the big swinging these guys bring off every show. Light, cameras, big production and red jumpsuits - these guys are beyond legit in their ability to pull off every era of Rush with masterful precision. Schatz needed to change his shorts twice during the recording, and he refused to use those unnamed male sanitary products, so it made us all Evan a little more uncomfortable...but again, Matt was a trooper. After a truly fascinating discussion of what it takes to play with Peart-ian precision and sing all of Geddy's parts, the wheel doses us with Chemistry from 1982's Signals! We introduce Matt to our sponsor, Danforth & Pape, dive into song facts and insights from RushVault.com, get a little Rush news from Rush Is A Band Blog, and hear some new music from Dirk himself. That, and Chaz actually pronounces Ashwaubenon! There's also a strange update regarding the fate of the "For Eyes Only" incident that's come to be known as The Episode 10. Cygnus X-1, Book 1, The Voyage, Incident. So put on your favorite French accent and try and keep up on an epic music-nerd fest of an episode of Rush Rash. The Scratch List - Scratch Yer Itch - LIVE! | Episode 38. Leave That Thing Alone | 04 Aug 2024 | 01:49:08
In a RushRash exclusive, Chaz n' Schatz land an exclusive with vocalist Rocky Kuner and guitarist Ben King of Southern California's Mood Lifters Tribute to Rush just ahead of their disembarking for a full-on "half-a-smily-face" tour of the land Down Under, 5 cities in 5 days! We talk what it's been like since Rocky joined the band and how they continue their journey from local SoCal Rush Tribute to all-out Global Rush rash super-spreader, spreading the rash far and wide! Moods were elevated: - What it was like going to Scotland, playing Rushfest with jetlag, other musicians, and someone else’s equipment. - How Ben discovered Rush through his sister in a time when MTV actually played music and how Rocky found Rush through her parents mix tapes. - Rocky's reaction to being dragged to Rush concerts by her Dad and Uncle at age 12. - How Mood Lifters and Rocky found each other after Rocky left YYNOT and how the band has gone to the next level since they’ve all joined creative forces. - The gear-up to do something Rush didn’t even do…play a five city tour of Australia this month. - The market for Rocky's hand-written set lists and how her biggest fans are closest to the heart! - How the band is able to create such high-energy shows that has everyone singing and participating. - How the band is rounded out by Mat Miranda on drums, who couldn’t be with us. And in an ongoing pattern of wheel-based shenanigans, we spin a track with no vocals, Leave That Thing Alone, off 1993’s Counterparts. Rocky and Ben really get into the music and Ben helps us discern the “Celtic flavor” in Al’s solo. Music appreciation and love of all the nuance, magic, energy, and intensity of multiple time signatures, key changes, and notes, notes, notes!! We name-drop (or at least think to mention in the show notes...) some of our usual suspects of our own like rushvault.com, and we are always thinking about rushisaband.com, and our fantabulous sponsor, Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai! And witness the first dual-attempt at playing Schatz’s Scratch List - a tongue twisting good time was had by all - so now get out there and scratch that itch to hear Rush music with the Mood Lifters or any of these other bands live: UK Scotland Moving Pictures Scotland Leoni Jane Kennedy RushFest Scotland North America USA YYNOT Second Contact Solar Federation Accidental Breakdown Rush Archives Mood Lifters Lotus Land Dumb Love Vapor Trail Rash Canada New World Men 2112 YYC South America Brazil RushFest Brazil Rush news, general nonsensical disorderly conduct, lack of regard for correctness or truth, and reckless endangerment of your whole-brain. Chaz N Schatz find themselves in the presence of the master of the CMPU (Corey Morrissette Podcast Universe) himself, Mr. Corey Morrissette on this Mean Street episode of Rush Rash!! Corey is host of 30 or 40 podcasts on the Deep Dive Podcast Network, and he's a card-carrying Canadian. That said - he's not your typical Canuck, especially when it comes to Rush. He breaks the mold yet again (a fancy way of saying he disproved our well-formed bias that ALL Canadian know and love Rush...) Did he know the song or not...let's put it this way, he was in the walk in clinic looking for add-on services, not the Containment Unit - so you figure it out! In an episode that has us talking everything from Aerosmith to Genesis to Van Fekn Halen to Randy Macho Man punching people in the d#@k...this is a no holds barred episode of Rush Rash. Corey takes us through his entire podcast dynasty: And the Podcast Will Rock, Back Tracks: Theme Music, Back Tracks: Aerosmith Revisited, and The Ultimate Catalog Clash and by the end of the list, there isn't an ounce of sanity left in anyone of us...we do discover his secret as to how he does it, and all we can say is that it's illegal in the U.S. The wheel blesses us with a chart topper - 1989's Show Don't Tell, off Presto! Danforth & Pape dispatches from the home office include the new Ghost Rider shirts - check them out on Steve Brown and at Danforth & Pape's Facebook page; we share some Top Secret, Classified and Eyes Only information about what's come to be called the Cygnus X-1, Book 1, The Voyage...Incident. | Episode 9. Emotion Detector | 01 Nov 2023 | 01:46:06
Chaz N Schatz walk into a hairy shite-show of a ruckus and call an all-hands-on deck EmergeAFeknC on this panicked and crazy episode of Rush Rash!! In a case of the absolute worst Rush Rash we've documented to date - Rush fan since he was a wee-laddie of the highlands, our special guest this week is none other than Steve Brown of Moving Pictures Scotland, RushFest Scotland, Tena Men's Ambassador and all around dude-bomber on the six-string. A Rush Rasher since the age of 8, he's got a guitar collection to rival Alex's and he's humble enough to admit he improvises when Al does too...and believe it or not can make grown, kilt-wearin', whisky (NO 'E') drinkin' men cry and bring warrin' clans back together - all in a fekn' sing along to raise your spirit and prove beyond a shadow the ability of Rush music to unite people across the entire astral plane...or at least over a pint or two!! Steve is all things Rush in Scotland and dare-say the UK and his story will keep you handlin' your haggis the entire time!! We let Steve do the name dropping this episode as we sit back in amazement that the veg-haggis controversy isn't a bigger issue than it is...so you have that revelation and other heresy and blasphemy to have the short hairs up under yer kilt needing a stiff breeze to get dry if you know what we're sayin'...which would be great - since we don't!! We end up spinning Emotion Detector off 1985's Power Windows, a song Chaz' had been itching to hear for several episodes...is someone messing with us?!?! Danforth & Pape gets significant attention; we get the full story of the sensational Leoni Jane Kennedy, as well hear lot's of samples from Moving Pictures Scotland and friends, and hear all about all the great charitable work Steve and Co. are coordinating with their wide network of Rush family all over the world, having raised over $125,000 US and counting! As always we go to our song facts and insights from RushVault.com, and find out that our sponsor, Danforth & Pape, does all the merch for all these charitable events and doesn't ask a dime in return! Please support Danforth & Pape - because...why wouldn't you?!?! The holidays are coming - upgrade your wardrobe today!! The Scratch List - Scratch Yer Itch - LIVE! Chaz N Schatz genuflect and give a heartfelt "We're Not Worthy!!" to Billy Alexander & Tim Starace from YYNOT. We were so thrilled to have YYNOT join us that we dumped name checking (beyond the usual suspect What No Way Guy) in favor of chatting up the band and going deep with YYNOT and Rush music analysis and organized chaos. We got the scoop on the 2024 Bubba Bash, Billy's new release Alpha Rhythm, and holy shit - a fuck-ton whole lot more than we bargained for!! (The language...these guys...) Bop! Bozadee, bozadee, bop, zitty bop! Chaz N Schatz welcome Scott "Mini-festo" Monroe of And The Podcast Will Rock fame, to share his wit, wisdom and a healthy appreciation for Van Halen and National Taco Day...and Rush! Scott's got his own history with the band that he shares before getting into one of the most tender tracks ever recorded - Tears - off of Rush's 1976 epic and iconic album 2112. If you forgot this track or it's been a while, you're forgiven...when was the last time you listened to side two of 2112?!?! Just kidding - who listens to records anymore?!?! WHISTLE!! Mr. Feder...calm down! We were so thrilled to have Scott join us that we dumped name checking (beyond the usual suspect What No Way Guy and our new friend Steve from Moving Pictures - Scotland) in favor of music analysis, and not just the core track. We did chat up the Bubba Bash and Rush Tribute greats YYNOT (and we have news to share on that item too!) Man - the global Rush Tribute Band Community ROCKS - and response from everyone has been so great, we get a little weepy and wipey - and end up smelling like Pumpkin Spice for the rest of the evening...dude...anyway, this episode saw us poke around on these internets and inter-webs thingies in "real time", and we found some cool shit to share. Second Contact performing Tears at a Rush Camp for the Rush Rats (sponsored by the charitable group Overtime Angels) that we knew nothing about, and a special high-profile cover-version surprise that caught us all off guard. Lest we shatter the illusion of integrity, we did not take a "re-spin" or "free-spin", we let the bones roll and thus we get to listen to The Spirit Of Radio here within the first five shows! A cunning stunt if there ever was one, maybe we're amazed and just can't stand it, but we let it be and go our own way analyzing one of the greatest tracks in Rush's catalog, as if we're equipped to discuss such song so nascent in our podcasting career! Like a couple of kids inheriting a family business that just sh*t the bed, we drop f'bombs and name names again, guys like the What? Nooo Waaay Guy - Shaun Umscheid; Montvale Hardware (Schatz is gonna have to pay a "social call"); we revisit virtuoso musician and content creator Scott Haskin's cool idea about theme shows; Corey Lokisette of the Terran Universe of And The Podcast Will Rock comes by again, and maybe should have left his whiskey home; Scottish Rush Tribute band Moving Pictures; we talk about Neil's kits and promised some links to those diagrams: Kit 1, Kit 2, Kit 3, and we even have a special St. Anger performance by Lars Ulrich to support Schatz at open mic night; and our favorite Rush fan, fact-filled, pithily summarized and thorough site of all things Rush, RushVault. We didn't get to letting the monkey out of his cage this week, and we skipped playing how many times did they play this live, as there have been wild accusations that it's somehow rigged...just because we use The Price Is Right music, doesn't mean we put a finger on the scale like some others...but we digress and we even got to Schatz's Scratch List, so go scratch with these bands live!

| Episode 42. Different Strings | 30 Sep 2024 | 01:48:21 | |
Chaz N Schatz visit with Heath McCoy, best-selling author, award winning journalist, and sports writer from the Great White North. You may know Heath from his spots on And The Podcast Will Rock, where he’s forever defending David Lee Roth’s version of Van Halen, and we get to know Heath even better, deep diving on his journalism career, having been the entertainment beat reporter for the Calgary Herald. Not only a Rush fan, Heath has been fortunate enough to interview both Geddy and Alex, and we get to hear some of his best moments speaking to some of his all-time heroes. Join us as Heath shares:
Heath’s fandom of Rush goes deep. He name drops some deep cuts and shares that his earliest aspiration was “to be Neil Peart” as a rock star, drummer, and writer of lyrics. The wheel gives us the lighter side of Rush, sharing Different Strings off 1980’s Permanent Waves. The guys can’t help but make at least two Ozzy Osbourne references from this song, leading them to wonder: was The Ozz-Man a fan of this song and Rush?? We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. We forget to give a shout-out to our sponsors Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai but we meant to (must be the gummie hangover). Chaz N Schatz walk into a hairy shite-show of a ruckus and call an all-hands-on deck EmergeAFeknC on this, another panicked and crazy episode of Rush Rash!! Not only have we had his kind before, the Haggis Shack is thus christened in his honor, and our guests horror! It's none other than Steve Brown of Moving Pictures Scotland, RUSHfest Scotland, RUSHfest Canada, and still serving as honorary Tena Men's Ambassador and all around LerxstTwoPointOh on the six-string. He's brought a cohort of rascals in the form of his own Geddy and Ben Mink, Eóin de Paor, and OG Original RushCon'er and RushRasher since way, way back, Paul Beaulieu of Canadian Music Scene. He's got a guitar in his collection signed by Alex, and it's a story that gets better from there. We're not even going to mention where we were talking to Paul from, or who was making his coffee, but trust us, you want to tune in for a touch with Rush legacy. We get the inside scoop on RUSHfest Canada, RUSHfest Scotland, the in's and out's of touring the UK in van, and what it's really like to golf with Lerxst. It gets even better from there! Danforth & Pape gets significant attention and we name drop the sensational PRS Recording Artist Leoni Jane Kennedy, and the wheel gets a spin. In true RushRash Wheel style, we get a significant work off 2012's Clockwork Angels, Seven Cities of Gold. A powerful track from the band at their zenith, and a swan-song that leaves little to debate when it comes time to vote. As always we go to our song facts and insights from RushVault.com, and find out that our sponsor, Danforth & Pape, goes to Dream Theater events in the sharpest T-Shirt apparel! Chaz N Schatz visit with multiple Eisner award winning author Mike Baron! The man who brought you the imaginative world of Nexus and Badger, the Punisher, the Flash, the first KISS comic (the one inked with The Demon’s blood) Mike's got some one-of-a-kind stories! Suffice to say, from Sherlock Holmes to Star Wars, if you’ve read good comics, you’re read Mike Baron! Mike shares his Rush journey with us, dropping some deep cuts and sharing stories about:
Mike’s fandom of Rush…it don’t go so deep. But his favorite cuts are deep tracks, and if he had more time, he’d know more Rush. One thing is for sure, when we got done wit ‘im, he was itchin’ fer more… The wheel gives us Witch Hunt off off 1981’s Moving Pictures. Chaz N Schatz host a cavalcade of Rush Tribute All-Stars from YYNOT, Solar Federation, A Farewell To Kings, and Second Contact. Join the guys and their special guests as they ponder all things Xanadu, the seminal work off 1977's A Farewell To Kings. An elemental song in the Rush catalog, it marks a tipping point toward a more synth-influenced sound. Where does our panel land when it comes to this cut? We dig deep with this all-star lineup to share our own feelings and understanding of why Rick Beato says this is Rush's best song ever. Chaz, Schatz and our friends:
