#129 How an Ex-Electrician Rewires Contractors' Businesses to Run Without Them With Adam Cooper

lundi 6 avril 2026Duration 39:23

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

Today I’m joined by Adam Cooper, the President of Ascent Consulting.

Adam started out in the industry as an electrician. He then worked his way up through project management and eventually stepped away from the job site to help contractors run better businesses behind the scenes.

Over the past decade, he’s worked with hundreds of construction companies across the US, helping them put structure around things most businesses just “figure out as they go.”

We got into private equity rolling into construction, why it works in some parts of the industry and completely falls apart in others, and what actually makes a construction business valuable enough to sell in the first place.

We spoke about systems, why most businesses are far more owner-dependent than they think, and what needs to be in place if you ever want to step away without everything slowing down.

Adam also shared how he nearly became a chemical engineer… which probably would’ve led a very different life.

#128 The Man Behind Construction Genius: Why Most Contractors Were Trained to Build, Not Lead With Eric Anderton

Episode 128

mardi 17 mars 2026Duration 33:39

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

Today I sat down to have a chat with Eric Anderton. He is the man behind the Construction Genius Podcast and has spent the last two decades helping contractors figure out something most of them were never trained to do: lead people.

Since 2004, he’s worked closely with construction leaders across the US, helping technically skilled builders make the shift from building projects to building teams.

We talked about the difference between hard bid environments and negotiated work, why many contractors believe price is everything, and how mindset often plays a bigger role in winning better projects than strategy alone.

Towards the end, we also dug into where the industry is heading, the next generation entering construction, and why Eric believes the combination of skilled trades and emerging technology is going to create enormous opportunities over the next decade.

If you’re trying to build better leaders inside your company, this is one worth listening to.

#119 The $7,500 Framing Startup That Beat a Cult, Desperation, and the Grant Cardone Hype With Nate Carlisle

mardi 30 septembre 2025Duration 30:31

Joining us today is Nate Carlisle, the founder who turned a $7,500 bet into a multi-million dollar framing empire. But to understand how he built his business, you first need to understand what he had to leave behind.

Nate grew up in a controlled, fundamentalist cult where entrepreneurship was discouraged and the outside world was off-limits. His story isn't just about business growth; it's a profound lesson in building personal and professional freedom from the ground up.

He isn't afraid to get real about the hard stuff: how cash desperation creates a race to the bottom, why the right partners are everything, and what it's actually like on the other side of high-profile, high-cost business coaching.

Sharing how Tecton Framing broke every mold, this episode digs into the raw realities of overcoming your circumstances—whether they're financial, cultural, or self-imposed.

For Nate, it all comes down to resilience, smart cash management, and trusting your own gut over the hype. Sounds like the kind of truth we all need to hear, right?

Let's get started.

Jason's really knowledgeable on the sustainability subject and I wanted to try and learn as much as I can personally about it because it's an area that I really don't know a lot about.

Generational Knowledge Transfer With Lisa Kinross

lundi 8 août 2022Duration 38:46

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast, my name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host. And this week I'm chatting with Lisa Kinross, CEO of the Civil Contractors Federation in Victoria.

In this episode, Lisa and I talk about all sorts of different stuff, including how companies can better transfer knowledge between generations within their companies. I think this is a really important issue because a large portion of our workforce is made up of people that are rapidly approaching retirement age.

And when they do eventually retire, they're taking huge amounts of knowledge and experience with them. So, companies figuring out a way to transfer this knowledge from their older generation, the people that are leaving the industry to younger people in their companies is a really important issue to find a solution for financially.

I really enjoyed having this conversation with Lisa let's get into the show

Expanding Internationally With Simon Gorman

lundi 1 août 2022Duration 25:12

Hello everybody and welcome to episode 24 of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name is Jordan Skinner, I'm your host, and this week I'm chatting with Simon Gorman from Reeves Envico.

And in this episode we're talking about taking on international work, something Simon and his team pretty much did straight out of the gate when they started the company. Now, in my head, I mean, taking on international projects sounds like a mammoth task. Running a business is hard enough, let alone throwing into the mix things like different languages, different times zones and different currencies.

So I wanted to get Simon on the show to firstly talk  about his experiences with building the company, but he also shares his insights into where most companies go wrong when expanding internationally.

Simon's a really interesting guy, I really enjoyed having this chat with him.

So let's get into the show.

Creating Mental Health Action Plans With Adrian Panozzo

lundi 25 juillet 2022Duration 33:34

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host,  and this week I'm chatting with Adrian Panozzo from the Civil Contractors Federation in Victoria.

Now, all of us understand that mental health within the construction industry is a massive issue. You can't walk down the street in the world of construction without hearing somebody parrot broad phrases like we need to fight mental health within construction.

And while nobody would disagree with these statements, the annoying part is that nobody actually tells us HOW we can fight mental illness within construction. And this is why I wanted to get Adrian on the show because Adrian and his team at CCF Victoria are not only saying that we need to help fight mental health, but they are the only people that I've spoken to that are actually offering up a solution.

In this episode Adrian explains what a mental health action plan is and how it can be implemented within businesses.

Let's get on with the show.

Eliminating Distractions And Getting Focused On Growth With Matt Glascott

lundi 18 juillet 2022Duration 31:39

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host  and this week I'm chatting with Matthew Glascott from Glasscott Landscape and Civil.

Matt has an extremely interesting story because while he was building a hugely successful landscaping company he was also venturing out into other businesses like development, labor hire, and even e-commerce.

But even though he really enjoyed these other ventures and learnt a lot, ultimately, they were just distractions from the work that he was most passionate about, which was landscape construction.

Once he was aware that these other things were just distractions he focused his attention back on the landscaping industry and has since grown Glascott Civil to over 200 people across multiple locations.

In this episode, Matt and I talk about how he actually started the company, some of the hurdles that he faced along the way and why he actually got distracted by all of these other business ventures only to return to the landscaping industry and really just settle in and focus in on that.

Let's get into the show.
