#129 How an Ex-Electrician Rewires Contractors' Businesses to Run Without Them With Adam Cooper06 Apr 202600:39:23

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

Today I’m joined by Adam Cooper, the President of Ascent Consulting.

Adam started out in the industry as an electrician. He then worked his way up through project management and eventually stepped away from the job site to help contractors run better businesses behind the scenes.

Over the past decade, he’s worked with hundreds of construction companies across the US, helping them put structure around things most businesses just “figure out as they go.”

We got into private equity rolling into construction, why it works in some parts of the industry and completely falls apart in others, and what actually makes a construction business valuable enough to sell in the first place.

We spoke about systems, why most businesses are far more owner-dependent than they think, and what needs to be in place if you ever want to step away without everything slowing down.

Adam also shared how he nearly became a chemical engineer… which probably would’ve led a very different life.

#128 The Man Behind Construction Genius: Why Most Contractors Were Trained to Build, Not Lead With Eric Anderton17 Mar 202600:33:39

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

Today I sat down to have a chat with Eric Anderton. He is the man behind the Construction Genius Podcast and has spent the last two decades helping contractors figure out something most of them were never trained to do: lead people.

Since 2004, he’s worked closely with construction leaders across the US, helping technically skilled builders make the shift from building projects to building teams.

We talked about the difference between hard bid environments and negotiated work, why many contractors believe price is everything, and how mindset often plays a bigger role in winning better projects than strategy alone.

Towards the end, we also dug into where the industry is heading, the next generation entering construction, and why Eric believes the combination of skilled trades and emerging technology is going to create enormous opportunities over the next decade.

If you’re trying to build better leaders inside your company, this is one worth listening to.

#119 The $7,500 Framing Startup That Beat a Cult, Desperation, and the Grant Cardone Hype With Nate Carlisle 30 Sep 202500:30:31

Joining us today is Nate Carlisle, the founder who turned a $7,500 bet into a multi-million dollar framing empire. But to understand how he built his business, you first need to understand what he had to leave behind.

Nate grew up in a controlled, fundamentalist cult where entrepreneurship was discouraged and the outside world was off-limits. His story isn't just about business growth; it's a profound lesson in building personal and professional freedom from the ground up.

He isn't afraid to get real about the hard stuff: how cash desperation creates a race to the bottom, why the right partners are everything, and what it's actually like on the other side of high-profile, high-cost business coaching.

Sharing how Tecton Framing broke every mold, this episode digs into the raw realities of overcoming your circumstances—whether they're financial, cultural, or self-imposed.

For Nate, it all comes down to resilience, smart cash management, and trusting your own gut over the hype. Sounds like the kind of truth we all need to hear, right?

Let's get started.

Hello everybody and welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name is Jordan Skinner, I am your host,  and this week I'm chatting with Jason Zafiriadis, the Chief Commercial Officer of Earth Friendly Concrete.

And in this episode, Jason and I dive into sustainability within construction and how companies can help reduce the carbon footprint of our industry. We also talk about Earth Friendly Concrete, which is a product that has been developed by the Wagner Group in Queensland and how that is also helping contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and sustainability as a whole.

Jason's really knowledgeable on the sustainability subject and I wanted to try and learn as much as I can personally about it because it's an area that I really don't know a lot about.

Generational Knowledge Transfer With Lisa Kinross08 Aug 202200:38:46

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast, my name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host. And this week I'm chatting with Lisa Kinross, CEO of the Civil Contractors Federation in Victoria.

In this episode, Lisa and I talk about all sorts of different stuff, including how companies can better transfer knowledge between generations within their companies. I think this is a really important issue because a large portion of our workforce is made up of people that are rapidly approaching retirement age.

And when they do eventually retire, they're taking huge amounts of knowledge and experience with them. So, companies figuring out a way to transfer this knowledge from their older generation, the people that are leaving the industry to younger people in their companies is a really important issue to find a solution for financially.

I really enjoyed having this conversation with Lisa let's get into the show

Expanding Internationally With Simon Gorman 01 Aug 202200:25:12

Hello everybody and welcome to episode 24 of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name is Jordan Skinner, I'm your host, and this week I'm chatting with Simon Gorman from Reeves Envico.

And in this episode we're talking about taking on international work, something Simon and his team pretty much did straight out of the gate when they started the company. Now, in my head, I mean, taking on international projects sounds like a mammoth task. Running a business is hard enough, let alone throwing into the mix things like different languages, different times zones and different currencies.

So I wanted to get Simon on the show to firstly talk  about his experiences with building the company, but he also shares his insights into where most companies go wrong when expanding internationally.

Simon's a really interesting guy, I really enjoyed having this chat with him.

Creating Mental Health Action Plans With Adrian Panozzo25 Jul 202200:33:34

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host,  and this week I'm chatting with Adrian Panozzo from the Civil Contractors Federation in Victoria.

Now, all of us understand that mental health within the construction industry is a massive issue. You can't walk down the street in the world of construction without hearing somebody parrot broad phrases like we need to fight mental health within construction.

And while nobody would disagree with these statements, the annoying part is that nobody actually tells us HOW we can fight mental illness within construction. And this is why I wanted to get Adrian on the show because Adrian and his team at CCF Victoria are not only saying that we need to help fight mental health, but they are the only people that I've spoken to that are actually offering up a solution.

In this episode Adrian explains what a mental health action plan is and how it can be implemented within businesses.

Eliminating Distractions And Getting Focused On Growth With Matt Glascott18 Jul 202200:31:39

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name's Jordan Skinner, I'm your host  and this week I'm chatting with Matthew Glascott from Glasscott Landscape and Civil.

Matt has an extremely interesting story because while he was building a hugely successful landscaping company he was also venturing out into other businesses like development, labor hire, and even e-commerce.

But even though he really enjoyed these other ventures and learnt a lot, ultimately, they were just distractions from the work that he was most passionate about, which was landscape construction.

Once he was aware that these other things were just distractions he focused his attention back on the landscaping industry and has since grown Glascott Civil to over 200 people across multiple locations.

In this episode, Matt and I talk about how he actually started the company, some of the hurdles that he faced along the way and why he actually got distracted by all of these other business ventures only to return to the landscaping industry and really just settle in and focus in on that.

Becoming An Employer Of Choice With Caytlyn Mead11 Jul 202200:26:16

Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name is Jordan Skinner,  I'm your host, and this week I'm chatting with Caytlyn  Mead, the CEO of the Robinson Civil Group.

The Robinson Civil Group is a family business that's experienced a huge amount of growth over the last few years, and now they have roughly 80 full-time staff and 200 pieces of plant. Throughout all of that growth, the company has placed a massive priority on training and developing their staff and as a result in 2021, they were named Medium Employer of the year.

In this episode, Caitlin and I talk about the company's commitment to training and how that has helped them stand out in a extremely competitive labor market and get them seen as an employer of choice.

I'm really excited to have Caytlyn on the podcast. She's very open and honest with how they're going about their training and shares a lot of great information in this episode.

Showing Your Value And Increasing Fees With Scott Clements04 Jul 202200:27:15

Hello everybody and welcome to episode number 20 of the Crushing It In Construction podcast. My name is Jordan Skinner, I'm your host,  and this week I am chatting to Scott Clements from Inertia Engineering.

In this episode, Scott and I talk about how companies can more effectively communicate their value. This is a really important topic because the companies that do a really great job of communicating their value and fully understand the value that they can bring to any given project give themselves a massive competitive advantage.

It allows them to build better relationships, build more trust and most importantly, it allows them to be positioned as a trusted advisor and in some cases affords them the luxury of commanding higher fees.

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

Joining us to unpack this bold idea is Anna Verghese, Founding Director of client-side consultancy Cerulean.

Anna has a radically different view on stability, and she's built her entire career on it: true security isn't given to you by a company, it's built by you through calculated risks, global experience, and betting on yourself.

Sharing how her journey from massive projects in Dubai to landing in Australia with no job offer led to a thriving business, this episode dives into the post-COVID realities of work - proving just how fragile the traditional career path really is.

For Anna, it's all about self-reliance, transferable skills, and entrepreneurial courage - that's how we build a truly secure future. Sounds pretty necessary, right?

Starting with a single 6-month contract and a personal credit card used to cover his first payroll, Sean has navigated market crashes, painful downsizing, and the complexities of bringing in - and later buying out - business partners.

Sharing how he built a business serving 45+ local councils without a master plan, this episode is a deep dive into resilient leadership, strategic pivots, and why sometimes the best businesses are built by accident.

For anyone who’s ever bootstrapped, bet on themselves, or wondered how to lead a team through tough times - this one’s for you.

Let's get started.

#116 Construction Isn’t For Everyone – How One Contractor Defied Expectations and Took Over the Family Business With Nic Parish02 Sep 202500:33:41

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

This week, Jordan sits down with Nic Parish - a man who went from designing chairs in college to co-owning and running his family's heavy civil, trucking, and dumpster businesses in Mississippi.

But this isn't your typical "third-generation success story." Nic's grandfather famously sat him down and begged him: "Please don't do this. Go do anything but this. You do not want this life."

He ignored the advice, bought in, and quickly learned why he got the warning. The pressure of the business led him to a dark place where the only way out felt like suicide -a story he shares with shocking honesty.

We dive into how that moment became a catalyst for change, forcing him to take 10 days off (the "best career decision he ever made") and ultimately leading him to implement the EOS system that transformed everything.

Let’s get it started!

#115 500 Bids to 4X Profit: The Counterintuitive Strategy That Saved This 3rd-Gen Contracting Business With Kyra Nylor12 Aug 202500:39:03

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction podcast!

After a chaotic few weeks of scheduling nightmares (thanks, end-of-financial-year madness), we’re finally back with a banger of an episode. I sat down with Kyra Naylor - CEO of Naylor Commercial Interiors and third-generation leader of her family’s Dallas-based architectural finishes biz.

Kyra’s story isn’t your typical "grew up in the trades" tale. She was the kid in cowboy boots translating for supers on job sites, detoured through law school, then got yanked back into construction when COVID hit. Now? She’s running the show with a mix of old-school grit and next-gen strategy like slashing 500 weekly bid requests to focus on clients who actually pay.

We cover Texas's boom-or-bust construction market, why election years bring projects to a standstill, and when "being nice" at work goes too far. Plus: the raw truth about inheriting a family business - from tough firings to construction-style networking.

#114 From Liverpool FC Trainee to 30-Year Construction Boss With Kazan Hadden08 Jul 202500:37:01

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

At 14, Kazan Hadden was training with Liverpool FC's youth squad. By 18? Injured, broke, and living in a caravan. Today, he's the founder of Nickaz Australia - a construction business that's thrived for three decades without ever chasing tenders.

We're digging into how getting cut from football taught him more than any business degree, why he keeps 15 full-time trades when everyone else subcontracts, how childhood trauma became his unfair business advantage and the $200,000 mistake that changed how he hires forever.

Real stories from a builder who's been through the fire. Hit play.

#113 How Live-Site Builders Are Surviving the Trade & Quality Crisis With Todd Bacon02 Jul 202500:34:40

This week we're sitting down with Todd Bacon, Managing Director of Central Coast-based Collaborative Construction Solutions. Todd's got some strong opinions about our industry, and he's not holding back: from tradespeople who've never seen standard installation guides to clients accepting mediocre work, we're facing a quality crisis that starts with training and ends with expectations.

Sharing how CCS operates differently, this episode takes us inside the challenging world of live-site construction - schools, hospitals and shopping centers where the public never stops moving around your work. Todd proves why this niche might just be the ultimate test of a builder's skill and patience.

For Todd, it's about balancing growth with sanity, investing in proper planning, and remembering to step away occasionally (even if that means battling boredom on a bike trainer). That's how we build better businesses - and a better industry.

Sounds refreshingly honest, doesn't it?

#112 How Buying a Civil Earthworks Business Became This Builder's Secret to Scaling to 8 Figures With Kane Keefe19 Jun 202500:29:49

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

For Episode 112, we’re sitting down with Kane Keefe, the visionary Managing Director behind Alliance Building Construction.

Based in Toowoomba but operating across Queensland, Kane took the unconventional path - launching during COVID’s toughest months, then systematically purchasing complementary businesses like a 30-year-old earthworks company rather than chasing traditional tenders.

He reflects on this bold journey, sharing how buying competitors became his secret to unlocking 8 figure scale, why vertical integration beats the race-to-the-bottom tender cycle, and how everything changes when you transition from employee to owner with real skin in the game.

#111 How One Bootstrapped Founder Built a $10M Screw Piling Business and Outplayed Big Contractors With Brodie Haughton10 Jun 202500:30:33

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

This week, we’re sitting down with Brodie Haughton, Managing Director of Solidity, a company that’s redefining foundation engineering with screw piling.

Now, screw piling might sound like a niche dark art (because it is), but Brodie’s taken this overlooked corner of construction and turned it into a multi-million-dollar business. And he did it by creating demand, not just fighting for scraps in an existing market.

This is a masterclass for business owners who want to spot and dominate a niche, bootstrap like a madman, survive cash flow nightmares, and use vertical integration to lock out competitors.

If you’ve ever thought, "There’s no room left to innovate in construction," this episode will prove you wrong. Let’s dive in!

#127 What Farming Taught One Architect About Accountability and Building Projects Start to Finish With Alastair McDonald03 Feb 202600:33:51

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast!

This week, I’m joined by Alastair McDonald from EDG Projects: a building design, architecture, and project management firm based in Echuca.

Growing up in a farming family in regional Australia, Alastair learned early what it means to take ownership of your work, especially when the risk is real and the consequences can land directly at your feet.

Now, as CEO and Director of EDG, that same mindset continues to influence his leadership.

We talked about EDG’s humble beginnings in Alastair’s parents’ spare room, what it took to build a serious business outside the major capitals, and how EDG stays involved from the designing process to construction on site.

Alastair also shared his perspective on post-COVID quality in the industry and how he approaches developing people without creating bottlenecks in the business.

This one is about patience, accountability, and building something that lasts.

#109 From Chippy to 8-Figure Builder Beating 2025’s Worst Odds With James Elliot14 May 202500:33:33

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast.

This week, we’re sitting down with James Elliott, owner of Red Dog Group and a UK-born builder who traded drizzle for Queensland downpours (and somehow still came out on top).

James has strong opinions about our industry, and he’s not sugar coating them: Builders are tired of being the scapegoat for every delay and price hike, overregulation is choking growth, and if we don’t start making trades appealing again, we’re in serious trouble.

From battling another year of biblical rain to flipping the script on sales (hint: stop selling services, start selling products), this episode digs into why 2025 might be the toughest year yet for builders.

And if you thought post-COVID chaos was behind us? Think again. James breaks down why the ripple effects, material costs, labor shortages, and red tape are still hitting hard.

#108 Degree vs. Experience: What It Takes to Succeed in Construction Business With Brendan Nielsen06 May 202500:33:25

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast.

This week’s guest is Brendan Nielsen, the founder of JC Engineers.

Brendan’s not your typical engineer. He’s spent years getting his boots dirty on site and knows firsthand that there’s a big difference between what’s drawn on paper and what actually works in the real world. In this episode, he shares how he went from working in the industry to backing himself and starting JC Engineers, a business built on solving real problems with the right people around him.

We get into how studying engineering didn’t exactly prepare him for what came next, what finally pushed him to take the leap, and why he’s more focused on building something solid than chasing wild growth. Brendan also gets real about what it’s like to run a business, the early frustrations, and why a degree doesn’t always mean you’ve got it sorted on site.

If you’ve ever felt like experience beats theory or you're someone who wants to hear the honest side of building something from scratch, this one’s worth a listen.

#104 Time to Upgrade! Why the Construction Industry Needs to Embrace New Tech with Tyler Campbell08 Apr 202500:34:00

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast.

Building something great requires a strong foundation-whether it’s a skyscraper, a business, or even a podcast. Just like in construction, where every beam and bolt serves a purpose, the right tools and insights can shape the industry’s future.

But what happens when the technology meant to help builders becomes more of a hindrance than a solution?

Today, we’re talking with Tyler Campbell, a former steel detailer, co-host of the Construction Brothers Podcast, and the mind behind Field Proof. After seeing firsthand how many construction professionals struggled with technology that wasn’t working for them, Tyler set out to create Field Proof to address these challenges. We’ll dive into the evolving world of construction tech and explore how we can make it work for the people who need it most.

#103 From Concreter To Construction Tech Founder With Daniel Ouliaris01 Apr 202500:31:12

Welcome back to the Crushing It In Construction Podcast.

Are you a subcontractor who's lost in an endless list of manual tasks and processes?

This week sees Daniel Ouliaris step into the chair - he's a former concreter and now Founder/CEO of Neo Intelligence.

Neo came about when Daniel and his brothers chose to reinvest money from their successful concreting business into designing software that solves all of their biggest pain points.

And it turned out they weren't alone - subbies all over Australia are reaping the rewards. He takes us through how the company came to be, what they're solving, and why he believes a broken industry is a chance to rebuild from the ground up.

Let's get started.
