We’re taking the opportunity this week to talk about the dynamics of the caregiver-survivor relationship as it has been for me over the past four years. Not having proper expectations has often been a downfall for me. Remember that “caregivers” are our doctors and nurses and spouses and significant others and friends and children. It takes a village to heal us.

I think this would have been a great topic earlier on in the podcast season, but things were just starting to evolve for me as to what those relationships look like now that I am more independent.

My name is Joshua Dixon; when I was eight years old, I was attacked by two pit bulls on the south side of Chicago in my parent's backyard. I lost over 80% of my face that day, and over the past 15 years, I’ve had 61 reconstructive surgeries. 

Throughout all these years, I battled things I wasn’t honest about. I struggled with PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

I'm a photographer that uses self-portraiture to describe these experiences, have inspired me to tell narratives while also raising awareness about issues regarding (mental health, ableism, medical devices, surgical practices, self-deprecation, racial discrimination, etc.) that are often silenced. Simultaneously, adding the inclusion of those and myself who feel discarded due to our unapologetic flaws.

I have been through a tremendous amount of harm in life, but through the will of God, I continue to fight for tomorrow. With great pain and years of continuous healing, every day is a battle and a fight for tomorrow. I know this pain a little too well, and knowing that I could’ve been one of the 45,979 Americans who lost their lives to suicide in 2020; motivates me to use my story and creative abilities to help others who may be struggling not feel alone in their pain.

God saved my life in December 2020 to help save others. A few months into my recovery from my December 2020 suicide attempt, my counselor told me how powerful affirmations were. One day I was crying after a very long emotional day, I looked in the mirror and said, “I admire you for not giving up. We got this.” I admire myself for not giving up on life.

I Admire you ( later became ‘Admire Wear’), which is very special to my heart. I pitched this brand to Adobe Creative Residency but didn’t make it past the second round. I was determined to accomplish this goal to create something for others. I founded Admire Wear.

At the core of that, being the founder myself, Joshua Dixon, my goal is to help save lives like mine and yours. As a survivor of dog mauling, 61 surgeries, sexual assault, rape, bullying, domestic violence, racial profiling, assault, discrimination of ability status, child abuse, suicide, depression, and myself.

I created this brand to help people potentially admire themselves and the world around them. I believe that all life is sacred, and our lives are meaningful. I believe that together we can choose love over fear and learn to dance in the rain because our admirers aren’t alone as we have each other along the way.

Early on I spent several years being a for-hire "machine whisperer." I designed, sold, and integrated custom-made hardware and software solutions for various manufacturers and industries.

I was a valued team member at Applicote Associates, IBM, Citrix, Microsoft, General Foods, RJR Nabisco, etc.

I am a life long learner and one of my passions is to educate business people who are looking to grow their business, to weave love, kindness, and compassion into the brand's DNA. I am a student of what works.

Nothing satisfies more than helping my clients find opportunities to do awesome things. It's fantastic! I am blessed & lucky to participate.

My life has been challenged by traumatic experiences. I lost most of my right hand when an explosive detonated as I was holding it, I had a massive heart attack at the age of 44, and finally in 2014 I had a stroke which helped to take down my life.

After the stroke, I pivoted towards educating families on how to deal with an unexpected situation. I have collected my experiences and focused on decoding which methods have worked the best for me to heal over the years.

I am an avid reader. I am formally studying Buddhism. I am a practicing meditator. I study world cultures in my quest to understand and appreciate the Wisdoms of our species.

When I'm not working, I am sharpening my skills by reading, producing art, music, and enjoying conversations with my sons, family members, and friends. I love walking, exercising, and exploring whatever city I am in. I am very much a kid at heart: Life fills me with wonder.

On June 3 2021, Faith woke up in flames. She was taken to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where she received life saving surgeries and care for 3rd degree burns to 40% of her body. After 71 days in the hospital (most spent in the Burn ICU), she was transferred to Stallworth Rehab Facility for inpatient occupational and physical therapies. She was a patient at Stallworth for 3 weeks, before finally being discharged to live with her family. 

Since her discharge, she has had multitudes of surgeries and therapies from her new, outpatient, medical team. (YAY for no more overnight hospital stays!!)

Just this week, I met Faith online and learned that she too has recently had photographs censored on a social media site simply due to her burns. Our pictures are being censored and removed because other people don’t like to look at our scars!

Amber Wilcox is a burn survivor, yoga instructor, and marketing professional from Ormond Beach, Florida. After her kitchen accident in 2020, Amber faced burns on 20% of her body from a hot caramel spill. After two skin graft surgeries from Orlando Regional Burn Center, Amber experienced hypertrophic scarring and underwent a series of laser burn surgeries at Tampa General Hospital. As the Marketing Lead for Phoenix Society, Amber oversees organizational and service marketing, manages PR and media efforts, develops strategies to grow and continually engage with our community, and so much more. Prior to her role at Phoenix Society, Amber has over 10 years of experience in Marketing, Customer Relations, and Public Relations, having held roles at organizations including, SmartBug Media, The Walt Disney Company, Halifax Humane Society, and Pevonia International Skincare, to name a few. When not marketing, Amber enjoys paddleboarding, volunteering for Phoenix Society as a Peer Supporter, teaching yoga for Kula for Karma supporting youth in Florida detention centers, or providing free yoga for peers on her website, yogaamber.com.

Khloe is 26 years old and from Maryland, but currently resides in North Carolina. She is a 2 year burn survivor after being attacked by a complete stranger. She suffered 70% burns and is an amazing woman. The case is still pending, but we’ll talk with Khloe again once it’s been decided.

Hello world, my name is Sanielle Jones. I was born and raised in Albany, Ga August 18th 1994. I currently reside in Savannah, Georgia where I recently graduated from Georgia Southern University with my bachelors degree in psychology. I’m currently doing a internship at nonprofit organization called Family Promise Inc where they assist the homeless families and help them permanent residency. 

I am a proud mom of a 12 year old cat named Michael, who treat dearly as my own birth child. I had him ever since he brought into this world. So we literally grew up together!
