As I think about it, there were a few occasions where I could see the possibility of finding my joy again, but it didn’t happen until I was ready to accept my new position in life. My transformation as we discussed last week.

Not having proper expectations has often been a downfall for me. Remember that “caregivers” are our doctors and nurses and spouses and significant others and friends and children. It takes a village to heal us.

I think this would have been a great topic earlier on in the podcast season, but things were just starting to evolve for me as to what those relationships look like now that I am more independent.

My name is Joshua Dixon; when I was eight years old, I was attacked by two pit bulls on the south side of Chicago in my parent's backyard. I lost over 80% of my face that day, and over the past 15 years, I’ve had 61 reconstructive surgeries. 

Throughout all these years, I battled things I wasn’t honest about. I struggled with PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.

I'm a photographer that uses self-portraiture to describe these experiences, have inspired me to tell narratives while also raising awareness about issues regarding (mental health, ableism, medical devices, surgical practices, self-deprecation, racial discrimination, etc.) that are often silenced. Simultaneously, adding the inclusion of those and myself who feel discarded due to our unapologetic flaws.

I have been through a tremendous amount of harm in life, but through the will of God, I continue to fight for tomorrow. With great pain and years of continuous healing, every day is a battle and a fight for tomorrow. I know this pain a little too well, and knowing that I could’ve been one of the 45,979 Americans who lost their lives to suicide in 2020; motivates me to use my story and creative abilities to help others who may be struggling not feel alone in their pain.

God saved my life in December 2020 to help save others. A few months into my recovery from my December 2020 suicide attempt, my counselor told me how powerful affirmations were. One day I was crying after a very long emotional day, I looked in the mirror and said, “I admire you for not giving up. We got this.” I admire myself for not giving up on life.

I Admire you ( later became ‘Admire Wear’), which is very special to my heart. I pitched this brand to Adobe Creative Residency but didn’t make it past the second round. I was determined to accomplish this goal to create something for others. I founded Admire Wear.

At the core of that, being the founder myself, Joshua Dixon, my goal is to help save lives like mine and yours. As a survivor of dog mauling, 61 surgeries, sexual assault, rape, bullying, domestic violence, racial profiling, assault, discrimination of ability status, child abuse, suicide, depression, and myself.

I created this brand to help people potentially admire themselves and the world around them. I believe that all life is sacred, and our lives are meaningful. I believe that together we can choose love over fear and learn to dance in the rain because our admirers aren’t alone as we have each other along the way.

On June 3 2021, Faith woke up in flames. She was taken to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, Tennessee where she received life saving surgeries and care for 3rd degree burns to 40% of her body. After 71 days in the hospital (most spent in the Burn ICU), she was transferred to Stallworth Rehab Facility for inpatient occupational and physical therapies. She was a patient at Stallworth for 3 weeks, before finally being discharged to live with her family. 

Since her discharge, she has had multitudes of surgeries and therapies from her new, outpatient, medical team. (YAY for no more overnight hospital stays!!)

Amber Wilcox is a burn survivor, yoga instructor, and marketing professional from Ormond Beach, Florida. After her kitchen accident in 2020, Amber faced burns on 20% of her body from a hot caramel spill. After two skin graft surgeries from Orlando Regional Burn Center, Amber experienced hypertrophic scarring and underwent a series of laser burn surgeries at Tampa General Hospital. As the Marketing Lead for Phoenix Society, Amber oversees organizational and service marketing, manages PR and media efforts, develops strategies to grow and continually engage with our community, and so much more. Prior to her role at Phoenix Society, Amber has over 10 years of experience in Marketing, Customer Relations, and Public Relations, having held roles at organizations including, SmartBug Media, The Walt Disney Company, Halifax Humane Society, and Pevonia International Skincare, to name a few. Hello world, my name is Sanielle Jones. I was born and raised in Albany, Ga August 18th 1994. I currently reside in Savannah, Georgia where I recently graduated from Georgia Southern University with my bachelors degree in psychology. I’m currently doing a internship at nonprofit organization called Family Promise Inc where they assist the homeless families and help them permanent residency. 

I am a proud mom of a 12 year old cat named Michael, who treat dearly as my own birth child. I had him ever since he brought into this world. So we literally grew up together!

Frank Green lll has overcome so many things. But God never gives us a load heavier than we can bear. He is a strong man and one of the kindest people I have ever met.

Growing up in the Elmwood Projects of Cairo, Illinois, Frank was faced with many unforeseen challenges such as drug abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, sexual assaults, gang violence and more. 

At the age of 21, Frank found himself facing 21 years in Military Prison. After release he looked at life as hopeless for a young Black male and began a life of criminal acts.

In 2019, Frank received a HEART transplant. He credits that gift of life to his relationship with God as he had already stopped the criminal acts and been licensed as a Minister by St. James C.M.E. Church in Salinas, Ca.🙌🏽

He currently serves as:

Grace Athena Flott (b. 1990) is a fine art painter, arts educator, and burn survivor from Spokane, Washington. Southwest Arts Magazine awarded her First Place in Artistic Excellence in January 2022. Major exhibitions include Figurativas 2021 at the Museum of Modern European Art (MEAM), Barcelona, Spain; Shades of Blue at Equity Gallery, NYC, NY, 2021; and recurring exhibitions at Maryhill Museum of Art, Goldendale, WA, 2019, 2020, 2021. A finalist in the 2020 BP Portrait Award and Art Renewal Center competitions, her work has appeared in Fine Art Connoisseur, The Artist’s Magazine, Realism Today, Seattle Refined and numerous print and online journals. She is a graduate of the University of Washington and the Juliette Aristides Atelier. Her first solo show Exposure Therapy exhibited with Figure|Ground Gallery in Seattle, WA in May 2022. Grace has been an artist-in-residence at The Hive (Spokane, WA).

Grace is currently a teaching artist with Terracotta, Gage Academy adult and youth programs (since 2016), AIGA (since 2018), and Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (since 2019), in addition to teaching privately online.

Tonya Meisenbach, better known as Burned Beauty 2018, is a wife, mother of two adult

children, luminary, and humanitarian currently living in Atlanta, GA.

Formerly a Paralegal and Realtor, Tonya has always enjoyed helping and elevating

others. After being burned over 35% of her upper body and almost losing the battle,

nothing has changed, Tonya turned her pain into purpose, and although Tonya’s

methodology is different, the end goal remains the same, elevating others.

“My face and upper body all skin grafts, and my determination and spirit all God.” Tonya

Tonya now uses hair, makeup, tutorials, and social media to help inspire other burn victims

in their recovery. She wants all survivors to understand that their wounds will heal, and

that with the right mindset, they can and accomplish anything and overcome any obstacle

thrown in their path.

Violence against women – particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence – is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.

Estimates published by WHO indicate that globally about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Most of this violence is intimate partner violence. Worldwide, almost one third (27%) of women aged 15-49 years who have been in a relationship report that they have been subjected to some form of physical and/or sexual violence by their intimate partner.

Violence can negatively affect women’s physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health, and may increase the risk of acquiring HIV in some settings.

Last episode, the Paramedics transporting me from the physical rehabilitation center to the hospital for a swallow test realized that I was having a medical emergency.

They took me to the emergency room instead ultimately saving my life AGAIN. I thought I had pneumonia again.

I was in a lot more trouble than I realized. 

But God 🙌🏽

After 2 months in a medically induced coma, I awakened happy and grateful.

I was facing many more challenges than I knew, but within the first week I understood most of them. How could I possibly overcome all the medical problems I had? And how would I maintain my sanity when I was so wrought with anxiety and fear?

This week I’ll discuss the details of my health condition at the time and how my issues were resolved. From repeated pneumonia to learning to walk again, we’ll cover it all.

More importantly, I’ll discuss how and what I felt.

The story continues! Last week we finished with me in the ambulance. That first night was the longest of my life, although I was in a medically induced coma, for the majority of it. 

That’s when my soul began living a life of it’s own. You could say I was dreaming, but it was so much more. My husband kept a digital diary every day that I was in the coma so that I would know the things that happened. After awakening and reading that diary, I was able to understand that my dreams during the coma, were not dreams at all.
