Health Challenges, Three Purpose-Driven Podcasts and Fatherhood As An Empty Nester: How Rory Paquette Navigates It All

Season 2 · Episode 94

mercredi 11 juin 2025Duration 37:27

Send us a text

What happens to fatherhood when children no longer need you for the basics of life? How do fathers navigate the emotional journey of becoming empty nesters? These essential questions take center stage in our heartfelt conversation with podcaster and father of three Rory Paquette.

Rory opens up about his profound health journey, surviving a collapsed lung and major thoracotomy surgery that became a wake-up call to reprioritize his life. This brush with mortality led him to launch his third purpose-driven podcast and reconsider what truly matters. His vulnerability in sharing both physical and emotional challenges offers powerful perspective for listeners facing their own life transitions.

The conversation shifts to the rarely-discussed emotional impact the empty nest has on fathers. While much attention is given to mothers during this transition, Rory candidly reveals the pain and disorientation of watching his three children leave home – especially when his youngest son skipped the college transition and moved directly into his career. "My wife and I are sitting there after everybody's gone and we're looking at each other on the couch going now what do we do?" This raw honesty will resonate with parents at any stage of the journey.

The most touching moment comes when Rory shares his son's wisdom: "Dad, I still need you, it's just different. I don't need you to buy my groceries anymore... I just need you as my life coach." This profound insight captures the evolution of fatherhood – from provider to mentor, from caretaker to life guide. For fathers navigating changing relationships with adult children, this episode offers both emotional validation and practical wisdom for maintaining meaningful connections across distance and busy schedules.

Whether you're a father yourself, have a relationship with your dad that's evolving, or simply appreciate authentic conversations about life's transitions, this episode will leave you reflecting on how our most important relationships transform rather than end as seasons change. Shelly's Shares: The Hidden Dangers of Sucralose

Season 2 · Episode 93

lundi 9 juin 2025Duration 15:44

Send us a text

Could that "healthy" sugar-free product actually be undermining your wellness goals? After discovering artificial sweeteners in a children's shake from a wellness company, Shelly embarked on a mission to uncover the truth about sucralose and other common toxins hiding in our everyday foods.

The facts about sucralose are alarming. This popular artificial sweetener disrupts gut health and the microbiome, potentially triggering digestive issues, immune dysfunction, and systemic inflammation. Paradoxically, while marketed to diabetics and those watching their weight, sucralose may negatively affect blood glucose and insulin levels. When heated, it breaks down into compounds linked to cancer risk. Perhaps most surprising, it can interfere with your brain's natural appetite regulation, potentially leading to increased cravings and overeating – the exact opposite of what most people using "diet" products want.

The environmental impact adds another layer of concern. Sucralose doesn't break down easily in our ecosystem, contaminating water systems and potentially harming aquatic life. While perfect avoidance of all toxins isn't realistic in today's world, I emphasize the importance of being particularly vigilant about artificial sweeteners. Reading ingredient labels carefully isn't just beneficial – it's essential for protecting your health.

Take control of your wellness journey by examining the products in your home today. Focus on making healthy choices about 80% of the time, especially with foods you consume regularly. Your body deserves better than hidden chemicals masquerading as health products. Share this episode with someone who might benefit from this information, and remember to do something positive for your wellness today.

Shelly's Shares: Uncertainty to Blessings:The Miracle of Motherhood

Season 2 · Episode 84

lundi 5 mai 2025Duration 20:07

Send us a text

The miracle of motherhood often comes with unexpected challenges that test our faith, resilience, and hope. In this heartfelt episode, Shelly opens up about her deeply personal journey to becoming a mother of three beautiful children—a path filled with medical scares, moments of profound uncertainty, and ultimately, extraordinary blessings.

Her story begins with the revelation that motherhood wasn't always my planned destiny. Unlike many women, she didn't grow up dreaming of future children or mapping out a family timeline. When she and her husband finally decided to start their family, they faced a series of challenges that changed their perspective forever. Shelly shares the emotional rollercoaster of receiving positive AFP test results with their daughter Jessica, the terrifying moment doctors identified a spot on her brain during ultrasound, and the powerful spiritual experience that carried her through that uncertainty. Through tears and raw emotion, she reveals how opening her Bible to Proverbs 3:5  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" became her lifeline.

The journey continued with their second child Cody having a similar positive AFP experience along with another potential scare.  Then it was multiple heartbreaking miscarriages before welcoming their youngest son Brayden six years later. This Mother's Day special episode celebrates the profound connection between all mothers—biological, adoptive, and otherwise—who understand that the path to motherhood isn't always straightforward, but the destination is unquestionably worth every trial. Whether you're a parent yourself or simply appreciate the beautiful complexity of family bonds, this intimate glimpse into Shelly's family creation story reminds us all that our greatest blessings often come after our most challenging moments.

How has your journey to parenthood or family shaped who you are today? I'd love to hear your story—share it with me on social media or leave a review with your thoughts about this deeply personal episode.

Healing Hashimoto's: Finding Hope Through Holistic Approaches

Season 2 · Episode 83

mercredi 30 avril 2025Duration 31:55

Send us a text

What happens when the broken healthcare system fails both patients and providers? This powerful conversation with Esther Yunkin reveals the journey of an emergency room nurse who transformed her own thyroid diagnosis into a mission to help others heal naturally.

After 17 years in emergency medicine, Esther grew frustrated watching patients return repeatedly for conditions that could be addressed through lifestyle changes rather than temporary fixes. The turning point came during a particularly grueling shift when her body physically rejected food hours after consumption—a clear signal that her nervous system was in crisis despite her outward composure. This disconnect between perceived and physiological stress mirrors what many Hashimoto's patients experience: knowing something is wrong while doctors and tests offer limited answers.

When Esther received her own Hashimoto's diagnosis, the irony wasn't lost on her. Despite years of medical training, thyroid health remained a puzzle—which made her realize how confusing it must be for patients without medical backgrounds. This revelation became her calling to create accessible, affordable solutions for those struggling with symptoms like crushing fatigue, unexplained weight gain, brain fog, depression, and skin issues.

What makes Esther's approach revolutionary is her emphasis on empowerment over expensive testing. Through her self-paced program, she guides participants to identify their unique root causes and implement sustainable changes that deliver meaningful results in about a month. Rather than creating dependency on practitioners or medications with concerning side effects, she teaches natural alternatives—including ways to boost your body's own GLP-1 production without pharmaceutical intervention.

The conversation culminates in a powerful reminder that transcends Hashimoto's and applies to everyone's health journey: you are valuable because of who you are, not because of any diagnosis or symptom. While medical guidance matters, you always have the autonomy to make decisions for your own health.

Connect with Esther's "Health with Hashimoto's" podcast to discover simple, sustainable solutions for thyroid health and beyond.

Shelly's Shares: The Fleeting Moments: A Mother's Perspective on Cherishing Every Moment

Season 2 · Episode 82

lundi 28 avril 2025Duration 16:21

Send us a text

Life moves so quickly, especially when raising a family. The wisdom in recognizing "these are moments we can't ever get back" forms the heartbeat of this deeply personal episode where Shelly shares about parenthood, being present, and finding joy in the stands of a baseball game.

After 35+ years as a health and wellness professional, Shelly shares insights from her most cherished role: being a mom. For over two decades, baseball has woven itself into her family's story. Now, with her youngest playing for Michigan while her older son coaches for Northwestern, Shelly has been traveling many weekends, soaking in each inning and creating memories that will last long after the season ends.

As a fairly new empty nester, she shares the clarity that comes along the experience. Without the competing demands of raising young children, we gain the ability to be more present, to appreciate nuances we might have missed in busier seasons. This emotional wellness perspective translates into practical wisdom for all parents: prioritize being physically present whenever possible, even when it means adjusting schedules, budgeting for travel, or making sacrifices elsewhere.

Shelly's daughter recently reflected on how she knows her mom and dad made it a priority to attend her dance performances and activities growing up. Now she hopes to offer that same gift to her future children. This generational passing of presence speaks to something fundamental in our wellness journey — the understanding that true joy lives in these shared moments, in witnessing our loved ones pursue their passions.

What brings you genuine joy? Whatever it is, Shelly encourages you to make space for it, to schedule around it, to be fully present within it. These experiences form the building blocks of your emotional wellness and create the memories you'll treasure most. Share your thoughts about this episode, and don't forget to subscribe for more Words of Wellness as we navigate life's seasons together.

Unlock Your Natural Energy Patterns & Understand Your Body's Rhythms With Miri Freidman

Season 2 · Episode 81

mercredi 23 avril 2025Duration 55:57

Send us a text

Have you ever wondered why some days you're bursting with motivation while others leave you feeling depleted? Miri, founder of The Women's Happiness Project, reveals how understanding your natural energy patterns through the lens of Chinese medicine's five element theory can transform your approach to wellness and self-care.

The conversation explores the revolutionary idea that wellness isn't about forcing yourself to follow rigid routines but rather tuning into what your body truly needs in each moment. Miri shares her personal journey from perfectionist all-or-nothing thinking—where only a 90-minute yoga session "counted" as exercise—to embracing a more intuitive, flexible approach that honors her changing needs and energy levels.

For mothers especially, this shift proves transformative. As Miri beautifully explains, "When mommy's dancing, she feels better. When mommy feels better, she doesn't yell at us." This simple truth highlights how our self-care radiates outward, directly affecting those around us. Whether you're struggling with "mom funk," feeling overwhelmed by conflicting wellness advice, or simply seeking more joy in your daily life, Miri offers practical wisdom on creating "magic moments" that shift your energy without requiring massive time commitments.

What's one thing you're doing that blocks your natural energy flow? By identifying and removing these obstacles—whether it's staying up too late, remaining sedentary, or consuming foods that deplete rather than nourish you—you create space for better choices to naturally emerge. Connect with The Women's Happiness Project and discover how small shifts in perspective can lead to profound improvements in your overall wellbeing and happiness.

lundi 21 avril 2025Duration 15:08

Send us a text

Navigating the world of nutrition can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to protein—how much do you really need? Join Shelly as she dives deep into protein requirements and sharing why most people aren't getting nearly enough of this essential macronutrient.

The science is clear: your daily protein goal should match your body weight in grams. For a 180-pound person, that means aiming for 180 grams of protein daily. Drawing from Dr. Paul Arciero's groundbreaking research on protein pacing, Shelly explains why strategically spacing your protein throughout the day dramatically improves absorption and utilization. This approach—consuming protein within an hour of waking, with each meal, and before bed—transforms how your body builds muscle, maintains metabolism, and supports bone health.

Shelly walks you through her personal protein protocol that makes reaching these goals surprisingly simple. From morning protein shakes to strategic meal replacements and carefully planned dinners featuring organic protein sources, this system eliminates guesswork while maximizing nutritional impact. You'll discover why certain protein sources, particularly undenatured whey, offer superior absorption and how pre-bedtime protein consumption supports overnight recovery and enhanced fat burning.

Whether you're focused on aging well, optimizing your metabolism, or simply improving overall wellness, this episode provides practical, science-backed strategies to transform your approach to protein intake. Ready to revolutionize your nutrition? Take this one simple step toward better health today—your future self will thank you.

Healing Your Relationship with Food and Self: a Journey Beyond Emotional Eating With Jillian Scott

Season 2 · Episode 79

mercredi 16 avril 2025Duration 43:08

Send us a text

What if your relationship with food is actually trying to tell you something about your emotional needs? In this captivating conversation with certified trauma-informed coach Jillian Scott, we uncover the profound connection between emotional hunger and our deeper psychological longings.

Jillian courageously shares her 12-year battle with binge eating and the revelation that changed everything: food was meeting emotional needs that weren't being fulfilled elsewhere in her life. With remarkable insight, she explains how dieting and restriction created a vicious cycle that made her binge eating worse, not better. "I was trying to outrun my nutrition," she reveals. "I was trying to outrun my low self-esteem."

This episode takes us beyond surface-level nutrition advice to explore how childhood wounds shape our adult relationships with both food and people. Jillian explains how growing up without her biological father created core beliefs of unworthiness that later manifested in seeking validation from relationships and turning to food for comfort. Her perspective is refreshingly compassionate – recognizing that emotional eating served as protection at one point in our lives.

We also explore the fascinating generational patterns around food. Many of us grew up with messaging like "clean your plate" – patterns that developed during actual times of scarcity like the Great Depression but persist even when physical scarcity is no longer an issue. Understanding these historical contexts helps remove shame and brings a new level of self-compassion to our healing journey.

Whether you struggle with emotional eating or know someone who does, you'll walk away with practical wisdom and a powerful new perspective. As Jillian says, "Sometimes God takes us where we don't want to go, to create in us what couldn't have been done any other way." Your relationship with food might be the doorway to profound healing you never expected.

Shelly Shares: When the Past Meets the Present: Finding the Joy in Life's Divine Connections

Season 2 · Episode 78

lundi 14 avril 2025Duration 13:35

Send us a text

Have you ever experienced those magical moments when life's seemingly random events suddenly reveal their hidden connections? That's exactly what happened during Shellt's recent trip to Eugene, Oregon where she traveled to watch her son play baseball.

Walking into the Valley River Inn brought a flood of memories—from an impromptu family stay fifteen years ago during a Thanksgiving road trip, to visits when her daughter attended the University of Oregon, to business events Shelly later hosted in the area. The realization that this place had been woven throughout her family story for years without them planning it left her in awe of life's mysterious patterns.

This spiritual dimension of wellness—recognizing that our journeys often have purpose and meaning beyond what we can see in the moment—offers profound comfort and perspective. Whether through faith or through your own personal lens, these connections remind us that life's seemingly random events often form a beautiful tapestry when viewed in retrospect.

Beyond this spiritual reflection, Shelly's time in Oregon highlighted another vital aspect of wellness: the importance of being fully present with life's simple joys. Her final evening at the inn, watching the rain fall over the Willamette River, enjoying a glass of wine by the fireplace, and simply soaking in the moment provided deep restoration. These quiet moments of mindful presence are essential components of our overall wellbeing that we too often neglect.

Shelly finishes with encouraging you to look for these connections in your own life story and to make time for those simple pleasures that bring you joy. Take a moment to be present, to reflect on your journey, and to appreciate how far you've come. Your wellness journey includes not just physical health, but spiritual and emotional wellbeing too. What simple joy will you make time for today?

The Silent Epidemic of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Personal Journey

Season 2 · Episode 77

mercredi 9 avril 2025Duration 15:44

Send us a text

Fatty liver disease is silently reaching epidemic proportions, now affecting roughly 25% of adults and alarmingly appearing in children. Shelly shares how her father's battle with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease opened her eyes to this often-overlooked condition that can be reversed if caught early but potentially fatal when ignored.

Unlike its alcohol-related counterpart, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease stems from lifestyle choices we make daily. The connection between this condition and other metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity creates a perfect storm, putting millions at risk without their knowledge. When the Surgeon General reported that a sedentary lifestyle is more harmful than smoking, it highlighted just how much power we have to change our health trajectory through simple daily choices.

Shelly dad's sweet tooth and struggle with diabetes contributed to his condition, but his story doesn't have to be yours. Through this episode, she shares practical, science-backed approaches to supporting liver health: reducing sugar intake, embracing cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, maintaining healthy weight, and incorporating regular movement into your routine. Shelly also explains the cellular cleansing practice that she has maintained for over a decade that helps support not just liver health, but total body wellness. Your liver performs over 500 functions essential to life - it deserves your attention and care.

Having lost both parents to serious illness, Shelly is passionate about helping others avoid preventable suffering. While we can't control everything about our health, we can make informed choices that stack the odds in our favor. Connect with Shelly through the show notes if you'd like to learn more about cellular cleansing or have questions about protecting your liver health. Together, let's build lives filled not just with longevity, but with true vitality.
