Employment Rights

Episode 17

mardi 11 février 2025Duration 43:35

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie pick apart Nanny contracts.

Despite being on PAYE Nannies are fully responsible for the complete payment of their tax and National Insurance. Nannies also need to be aware that it is their responsibility to ensure they are on the correct tax code.

Amongst other topics, the ladies dissect pensions, holiday entitlement, maternity leave.

* Nannies please do not rely on the standard employers’ contributions, ensure you make alternative provisions for yourselves too.

** Please note that maternity rights have since changed and now an employee is protected from redundancy for up to 18 months from when they inform their employer of pregnancy.

Listener’s Question:

I’m a nanny and I live in.

When my boss comes home from work she asks about my personal life. She knows I’ve got a new girlfriend and asks how the relationship is going. On the whole I don’t mind her asking questions but I would like to keep a professional relationship. How do I maintain this without appearing rude or aloof

Managing Emotions

Episode 15

mardi 28 janvier 2025Duration 42:41

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss emotional regulation in children.

What is emotional regulation and how can Nannies help children?

The ladies discuss different strategies for children to learn how to manage their emotions and to self soothe, how it is totally fine for children to show their emotions and how the toddler years are key.

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie talk about how staying calm is key when a child is displaying their big emotions and how difficult that can be as a Nanny! Sometimes it can be easier for a child to open up to their Nanny than their parents. Again showing how important our roles are.

Listener Question

Dear WTNH I was listening to your episode on resigning from your job and I wanted to ask your opinion on how to deal with a certain situation. I handed in my notice at my job. I have been there nearly 2 years and my boss was clearly very upset that I was leaving. She ignored me for the whole of my 4 week notice period and I didn't really know how to behave. What would you have done?

Interview with Liz Wise: The Truth About Postnatal Depression and How We Can Help

Episode 14

mardi 21 janvier 2025Duration 35:31

This week we have the incredible Liz Wise from The Cedar House Support Group in Guildford speaking to us about postnatal depression.

Before becoming a mother Liz had previously worked as a nanny and therefore thought motherhood would be a breeze. Unfortunately Liz went on to suffer from postnatal depression (PND). Liz talks to us about her personal experiences and how we as Nannies can support both Mums and Dads that we believe to be suffering too. What is the role of the Nanny? Who should Nannies be speaking too if they suspect a parent is suffering from PND? How can the Nanny support the other siblings in the home.

Liz pulls apart the differences between Baby Blues and PND whilst sharing the signs and symptoms of PND. She explains what the risk factors might be and how, as Nannies, we are able to help in order to help prevent PND.

Thank you again to Liz, so honest and informative.

Resigning

Episode 13

mardi 14 janvier 2025Duration 29:53

When is the best time to resign?

*Spoiler Alert* There isn’t!!!

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie give their advice on how to negotiate the tricky process of resigning.

Are you really ready? Have you checked out? If so, it’s time to resign since it’s not fair on you, the children or the family.

How much notice do you give the children when you’re leaving? Who should tell them? You or the parents?

How long is the ideal hand over time?

The ladies debate the topic of finding a new job or resigning first? Should the Nanny just be honest with their employers and let them know they are actively looking for another job?

Listener Question

Dear WTNH I have just been away with employers and my boss’ sister and her family came too she has an 18 month old son and a 3 year old daughter who I ended up looking after for the majority of the time that we were away. This feels really unfair and i feel like i have been taken advantage of, help!

It's A Job!

Episode 12

mardi 7 janvier 2025Duration 33:54

A new year and a new prospective?!

As a good Nanny can your role just be a job?

The very nature of being a good Nanny means Nannies care, they want to help and go above and beyond.

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie discuss how Nannies can create boundaries to prevent a job from becoming a life. Employers will always ask the question (whatever that question may be!) the question doesn't need to be answered straight away and it certainly does not have to be yes!

Nannies must think about themselves, their own families and their own lives. Especially since time passes so quickly when one is a Nanny.

Does Nannying have a shelf life? Nannies tend to put everyone else’s needs before their own so much so that Nannying can become emotionally and physically draining. Sometimes a vent to someone who fully understands is enough. Sometimes more drastic action is needed. The ladies discuss other types of jobs and how a Nanny’s skills are transferable.

Have the confidence to try another job or a different type of job, transfer those skills and take the pressure off!

How does a Nanny feel once they have their own child?

Millie chats about her roles since becoming a Mum, what’s expected of her and her new set of boundaries. This week’s Just For a Laugh is Millie’s own story.

Listener Question:

Dear Your Nanny Network, I have been introduced to a family through a friend. What sort of thing do I need in place as I’m not getting the job through an agency?

Interviews: The Ultimate Guide

Episode 11

mardi 17 décembre 2024Duration 36:37

Charlotte, Charlie and Millie guide Nannies through the process of how to have a successful interview.

The ladies discuss what preparation a Nanny can do in order to make the best impression.

With hints and tips for Nannies on how to be fully prepared before they knock on the door!

Who is actually interviewing who?! What are the important questions Nannies need to ask in order to make an informed decision regarding a role. Advice on how not to feel the pressure in the moment when tricky questions are asked.

The rise of Zoom interviews! What are the pros and cons?

Listener Question:

Hi What The Nanny Heard, I have a quick question regarding babysitting. I currently babysit once a week for my family and I am a live-out Nanny. I often order take out for dinner but should this be at the expense of my employer or should I be covering the cost?
