31: Five Reasons Why Your Directive Documentation Might Not Be Working
Season 2 · Episode 31
lundi 11 septembre 2023 • Duration 20:44
In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee dives deep into a common workplace challenge - why people sometimes don't follow policies and procedures.
It doesn't matter the size of the organization, the organization has to ensure the health and safety of the employees. Now, when we think about that compliance standpoint, oftentimes policies and procedures are only followed when someone from corporate or an auditor is there.
Can you relate to spending hours crafting what you think is the perfect set of directive documentation, you have a fantastic procedure, only to find out through observations or feedback that people aren't following them. It can be frustrating. But fear not, I've got five reasons why your directive documentation might not be working and how to improve them.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Using clear and concise language to convey your message in documentation
- Involve employees in the creation and review of documentation
- Training is essential for ensuring that documentation is followed
- Ensure your documentation is regularly updated
- There needs to be accountability for not following policies and procedures
The Transmit Safety Podcast is here to help health and safety practitioners achieve a holistic approach to workplace health and safety so they can become impactful leaders and put the value of safety into action.

Quotes from this episode
“Clear communication isn't just about the words, isn't just about what people are saying. It's what they're not saying when it comes to communicating your policies, your practices, your procedures, your standards”
“It's not enough to have a great document. You also need to ensure that people understand how to follow it. If you just assume that they're going to figure it out on their own. You're definitely setting yourself up for disappointment.”
“If there's no consequences for not following a policy or procedure, then why would people take them seriously? They may feel that they're there, but there's no repercussions. And if there's no repercussions, then why would they follow them?”
“Disciplinary action shouldn't be punitive. When done correctly, disciplinary action is a learning opportunity.“

21: The Importance of Clean and Functioning Washrooms at Worksites
Season 2 · Episode 21
lundi 3 avril 2023 • Duration 20:53
In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee highlights the importance of clean and functioning washrooms at worksites for worker health and morale.
Going to the washroom is something we all do, every single day. Therefore, having access to clean and functioning washrooms on-site might seem like a no-brainer. This is very often not the case. I have lost count of the number of sites I have been to where there either was no access to a washroom or the washroom was nasty.
I have heard stories firsthand of women who don’t go to the bathroom all day or of designated corners of worksites that men use as a toilet because there is no on-site access to a washroom. This is not only demeaning but it also leads to a whole host of health concerns.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Inclusivity in washrooms
- The impact of washrooms on worker morale
- Clean and functioning washrooms relate directly to worker health
- Washroom design should be included in the pre-job planning phase and budget of a project
- 3 of the most important features of a washroom - accessibility, hygiene, and privacy
- The need for education and needs assessments around washrooms
The Transmit Safety Podcast is here to help health and safety practitioners achieve a holistic approach to workplace health and safety so they can become impactful leaders and put the value of safety into action.

Quotes from this episode
“How can we create a welcoming and accepting workplace environment to all of our workers and then not provide adequate washroom facilities?”
“When workers have access to clean and well-maintained washrooms on site, it sends a message that their basic needs are being taken care of seriously, and that their well-being is a priority for the company.”
If workers don't have access to clean and functioning washrooms, they may be more likely to develop health issues, dehydration, urinary tract infections, or maybe depending on the time period that they have been without adequate washrooms leads to more serious conditions like kidney stones. These health issues can be uncomfortable, painful, and can increase their amount of sick days.”

19: Putting Your Values Into Action as A Consumer Outside The Workplace
Season 2 · Episode 19
lundi 6 mars 2023 • Duration 17:53
In today’s episode of Transmit Safety, Aimee is talking about putting your values into action outside of the workplace.
If you hold safety as a value, how is that impacting your decisions as a consumer outside of the workplace?
This is a topic I'm very passionate about. I hold safety as a value, safety for the environment, safety for the people, and that’s just so deeply integrated internal code of ethics, with my personal morals, and my personal values that it impacts the products that I am buying, who I want to work for and work with, as well as a lot of my decision-making.
I know that not everyone thinks about safety as I do, and that’s okay. However, this is something that many have never stopped to think about, and as Health & Safety professionals or practitioners and, most importantly, as humans, we should take it into consideration.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- The story of when I first realized not everybody thinks about safety as a value in the same way I do
- Not all organizations need to hold safety as a value directly
- The importance of paying attention to the supply chain and who really owns the company you’re buying from
- You can make a difference if it’s in your financial power to do so
- Put your values into action by being a more conscious consumer
