Those from the 70s know, in his time, Warren was considered to be the world's most famous male feminist, travelling the globe, advocating for women, opening women's groups, and becoming the first (and only) man to ever be elected three times to the board of directors, at the NY division of the National Organisation of Women – the world's biggest feminist group. Mary Curnock Cook has a lifetime of priceless career experience within education; that has seen her work across the school system, right to the very top, where she served as Chief Executive Officer of UCAS for several years, and remains one of the UK’s most respected independent advisors within education.

During this time, one thing became alarmingly clear to Curnock Cook: that young men and boys were not being adequately served, and are quietly falling behind in school, at every age, and in nearly every area of education. 

And perhaps more alarming was how so few people, if any, were talking about it. 

‘A deafening policy silence’, as Curnock Cook wrote herself, to describe the betrayal and continued erasure of “the boy girl gap” in school.

Here is my conversation with Mary, about why boys are behind, how this gap is different to others in education, the damage it causes, and what we can do to close it.

Much of the political world is reeling from last weeks Presidential verdict, not necessarily by who won, but by how much he won by. Immediately it was clear who clinched the election for the Republicans – men. And so stones of hyperbole, already, have started to be thrown; with outraged Democrats blaming a so-called "racist" and "sexist" electorate, who want to putatively punish women, stripping away their rights, to send them back to a handmade's tale. But is it that simple? Why did so many men fail to vote for the Democrats, are they sexist, or did they simply not see a party that was doing anything for them? And when an entire political wing labels men as 'toxic', 'privileged', 'violent', 'oppressive,' and compares them to bears – is it surprising so many packed up their bags and left? Emeritus Professor Dr Don Dutton has written, hundreds of peer-reviewed articles, more than eight books and textbooks, won dozens of grants, and served as an expert witness in nearly 100 legal cases, including appearing for the prosecution in the 1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson. He is arguably the leading expert in family violence in North America. And yet, many have never heard his name, with Don describing himself as 'persona non grata' because the data and findings he presented were uncomfortable, politically unpopular, and for some, offensive. Regardless, Dutton cares only for data, and no matter how ugly or uncomfortable, he has presented the truth to the world for decades. Susie Bennett is a PhD researcher from the Suicidal Behavior Research Laboratory at the University of Glasgow.

In early 2021 Susie and myself worked together to capture new data on suicidality in men, capturing the insights of an incredible three thousand men across eighty countries worldwide. Now Susie is back and joining me to share her early findings to help widen the conversation of male suicide, to look into this and previous studies to help us better understand what is going on with our men.
