Brothers in Finance: Exploring Treasury with Arturo Aguayo & Fidel Aguayo

In this episode we have a first for The Treasury Career Corner podcast as we are delighted to be joined by twin brothers Arturo Aguayo and Fidel Aguayo as they share their journey in the field of treasury and their experiences in higher education finance.

Arturo Aguayo:

Arturo is the Assistant Treasurer at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a renowned research and education institution where he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Treasury including debt administration, cash management, short-term investments, and merchant services/PCI compliance  

Prior to joining Caltech, he was a Director of Treasury for the University of Southern California (USC). During his tenure at USC, Arturo developed financing and operational strategies that supported cost containment and revenue generating initiatives for both the University and the Healthcare Enterprise. Before joining USC, Arturo worked as an Investment Banker and Consultant serving municipal clients throughout the State of California.

Fidel Aguayo:

Fidel is the Vice President of Treasury and Investment/University Treasurer at Loyola Marymount University, a prominent academic institution, where he oversees cash management, debt administration, and the University’s endowment.

Prior to joining Loyola Marymount University, Fidel served as City Treasurer for the City of Long Beach, California. As Treasurer, he managed all treasury functions. He also established city-wide financial policies and procedures and was responsible for the City’s long-term capital financial plan which incorporated enterprise departments.

Prior to joining the City, Fidel spent nearly ten years working for a top ten investment bank. During this time, he executed approximately $40 billion of debt for some of the largest agencies in the State of California including airports, seaports, school districts, utilities, and non-profit organizations.

Both guests have 20+ years’ experience in treasury and public finance and this episode explores the brothers' paths into treasury and their work in higher education finance.

They discuss their early experiences in treasury, their passion for public finance, and their transition into higher education. They also touch on the challenges and changes in the treasury field, such as technology and economic conditions.

Why You Should Stay Eager to Learn in Treasury with Frank Muusse

On The Treasury Career Corner, we hear so much excellent advice from insightful leaders from the world of treasury and today’s episode is no different. 

Frank Muusse, Head of Treasury at C&A, joins episode 240 to discuss his career to date. 

Frank explains his early steps into the world of treasury via business analysis, how to evolve your own role in the industry and the importance of finding the right people for your team. 

Plus, he provides top advice on why treasurers should remain open-minded and keen to learn throughout their careers. 

Frank began his career as an Applications Manager at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 2000 to 2002. He then spent a year and a half as a Business Analyst with Deloitte before embarking on his treasury career. 

He moved to Wolters Kluwer, initially as Assistant Treasurer, Middle Office, in 2004 before moving to the front office from 2006 to 2009. 

Next, Frank took up a role as Treasury Advisor for KPN before joining Philips where he filled a number of positions between 2010 to 2016, later working as Head of Corporate Finance for Philips Lighting until 2019. 

Frank then joined CarNext.com as Head of Treasury in 2019 but switched to a role with the same title at C&A in January 2021, where he remains today. 

Frank has a degree in Business Economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

How to Implement a Treasury Management System with Bart Hendriks

Treasury management systems often don’t function well if you don’t have the basics in place.

That’s the opinion of this week’s guest on The Treasury Career Corner.

Bart Hendriks, Head of Global Treasury Operations and Inhouse Bank Management at CEVA Logistics, explains why companies that grow very fast and, in turn, grow their treasury teams very fast often lack some basic strategies or policies to reach their potential.

Plus, in this episode, Bart discusses his career to date, how he got started in treasury and his passion for lecturing.

Bart Hendriks is responsible for global treasury operations and in-house bank management within the CEVA Group.

He started his career in corporate banking and leverage finance with the likes of KBC Banking and GE Capital either side of a job in treasury recruitment with Michael Page International.

In 2009, he moved to corporate treasury where he worked for several global companies with increasing management responsibilities. In addition to this, he is a lecturer at the Vrije University in Amsterdam, teaching Treasury Management & Organization.

Bart holds a Masters in Economics from Maastricht University and an MBA for Solvay Business School.

A Treasury Career in Asia with Christian Zeidler

Each treasury professional has their own story to tell of their introduction to the industry. As does our latest guest on The Treasury Career Corner, who has had a unique and fascinating career path. 

On this episode, we are joined by Christian Zeidler, VP Head of Department, Global Treasury Front Office at Robert Bosch. Christian discusses his route into treasury through other finance sectors, why he chose to work in Asia and whether his career path lets him see treasury in a different light. 

Plus, Christian provides expert advice for treasury professionals at all stages of their careers. 

Christian graduated from the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1994 with a degree in Business Administration, Controlling, Trade and Marketing. 

From 1988, he worked in a number of roles for Deutsche Bank within Corporate Banking, based in his native Germany as well as in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Singapore. 

From 1999 to 2000, Christian became a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young Consulting before taking on roles with Siemens AG from 2000 to 2007. 

After a short spell with Nokia Siemens Networks as VP – Finance and Business Administration, Christian joined Robert Bosch in 2008. He took on his first treasury role as Head, Regional Treasury Asia-Pacific, returning to Singapore and later Shanghai.  

He has filled a number of other roles across his time there, currently working as VP Head of Department, Global Treasury Front Office, and based in Stuttgart.

Implementing Treasury Roadmaps with Séverine Le Blévennec

Séverine Le Blévennec, Global Head of Treasury at Aliaxis, joins this episode of The Treasury Career Corner. 

This is her second appearance on the show and Séverine has changed roles since her last episode. Here, she talks about her new position, the impacts of COVID on the industry and the importance of technology and data within treasury. 

Plus, she explains her treasury roadmap in detail. 

Séverine joined Aliaxis as Global Head of Treasury in June 2021. Prior to this role, she worked at Honeywell EMEA Treasury for 15 years in a number of roles such as Director and Senior Director of EMEA Treasury. 

During this time, she built her expertise in a number of fields such as cash management, cash investments, EU regulations compliance and lobbying as well as transformation and digitisation.   

Before she joined Honeywell, Séverine spent 7 years at GMAC European Treasury Centre where she was involved in all aspects of liability management: capital market programs, credit lines negotiation and documentation, securitisation transactions and innovative secured credit lines set up.  

The stellar work she’s done hasn’t gone unrecognised as Séverine’s been honoured by numerous international awards in the fields of cash and liquidity management, innovation and technology or treasury strategy. She's also a recognised voice of the industry and an acknowledged speaker in the fields of treasury regulations and innovation. 

Séverine holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance (ICHEC), an EFFAS certification (European Federation of Financial Analysts) and is Six Sigma Green Belt.

Fully Understanding Your Organisation with John McAnulty

That advice comes from this week’s guest on The Treasury Career Corner who joined the show to provide expert advice to treasury professionals. 

John McAnulty, former Group Treasurer at Richemont, discusses his route into the industry, how the treasury world has evolved and how he has navigated crises over his 30+ year career. 

Plus, he highlights the key traits he thinks professionals require to make it in treasury. 

John McAnulty was appointed Group Treasurer of Richemont, a leading luxury goods company, in 2000 and is based in Geneva. In addition to coordinating all treasury activities, he is responsible for overseeing the Group’s global pension, insurance and enterprise risk management programmes. He left this role in September 2022. 

Prior to joining Richemont, he worked from 1989 for SmithKline Beecham plc undertaking a variety of roles in finance and strategy development. From 1985, he worked for the Midland Bank group, first in its leasing subsidiary and subsequently in the banks’ central finance function. 

Born in the UK, John holds a degree in Business Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Finance and is a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.
