Feature Series: Our Take on the Corporate Treasury Industry23 Sep 202200:58:02

This is the 4th, and last, episode of this amazing feature series with Hussam and Guillaume from Corporate Treasury 101. For this special episode, I shared the microphone with Katie Hardie, Recruitment specialist for the European markets, so she could help me answer the grueling questions from these two.

In this episode, we focus our conversation on the latest trends in the Treasury Market. We discuss talent, recruitment, what consequences the pandemic has brought in our working habits, what is going on in Treasury overall and our culture at the Treasury Recruitment company.

The hybrid way of working is by far one of the biggest changes we have witnessed in the industry over the last years. It is now a prerequisite for many candidates and companies wanting to attract (and retain) talent must adapt to this new trend.

Working remotely is largely recognised as a productivity enhancer, but meeting physically also has its advantages. Knowledge transfer, culture nurturing, coordination between junior and senior staff are all parts of work that are best achieved by face to face interaction.

But where does the market sit in terms of talent availability and job openings? How do we at The Treasury Recruitment Company help our clients to find the best, long term fit by nurturing a culture of transparency? And what are the differences between the US, UK and European market in terms of trends and maturity?

Curious to know more? Then go and press the play button.

This fascinating discussion is the natural end to our featured series. We talked about the early stages of a career in Treasury and how to enter into this world. We walked through what makes a great Treasury Manager, and in the previous I developed on what I have learned about Group Treasurers, interviewing more than 200 Treasury professionals.

Building an Efficient Treasury Team with Steve Rosenthal13 Sep 202200:52:05

When you’re building a treasury team, there’s a lot to think about, considering how vital treasury is to operations.

That’s what Steve Rosenthal, the Global Treasurer and Managing Director at Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc., explained in this episode of The Treasury Career Corner podcast. Steve originally joined us back in 2020 to discuss the intricacies of building a team.

Steve took a very unconventional route into treasury with degrees in psychology and clinical psychology. But conversations with the right people and a detailed program won him over to the treasury side of things. Since then, Steve has served in different treasury roles at Bear Stearns and Morgan Stanley. However, he’s been at Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc., for about 15 years.

Broadridge, a global fintech leader with $5 billion in revenue, helps clients get ahead of today’s challenges to capitalise on what’s next with communications, technology and data and analytics solutions that help transform their businesses.

They handle millions of trades a day involving trillions of dollars, deliver essential communications for over 5,000 brands and manage shareholder voting in 90 countries.

Feature Series: What I have seen in Great Treasury Managers09 Sep 202200:34:23

Treasury Manager is the natural evolution of the Treasury Assistant and Analyst positions.

But what does it really mean to be a Manager in Corporate Treasury?

Being able to touch upon any Treasury topic - Cash Management, Financial Risk Management, System implementation, Basics of Accounting and so on is for sure a strength. But the Managers that stand out are those excelling at people skills and communication

You are not only a technician anymore, you are supervising a team of specialized and talented people. How you allow them to grow and thrive, whilst enabling the Group’s strategy and potentially influencing it by working as the custodian of cash: this is how to achieve success as a Treasury Manager.

In this feature episode, I get interviewed by Hussam and Guillaume from Corporate Treasury 101. They co-host a podcast where they break down (sometimes complicated) Treasury topics and explain them in an easy to digest way.

Today, they were interested in finding out from me what happens at the mid-levels of a Treasury Career. Naturally, we talked about the Manager’s position and what it means from a Front, Middle and Back Office perspective. We also go through the hard and soft skills required, what kind of profiles thrive in such an environment, as well as what can you expect in terms of challenges, salaries, personal growth, and much more.

When recording this Feature Series, it was important for us to not only scratch the surface; but take the time to discuss all the aspects of this particular role in Treasury. We tackle the overall impact a Treasury Manager can have, but also the stress and pressure she or he has to face. Be reassured though, such a position can also be quite rewarding.

Feature Series: Starting Out in Corporate Treasury02 Sep 202200:47:05

For the past few years, people entering into the world of Treasury has mostly been by accident.

Hussam and Guillaume - hosts of the Corporate Treasury 101 podcast - came and asked me questions about how to enter this amazing world. Not only do we discuss the different opportunities that Treasury can offer in the early stages of a career, and how to successfully enter into Treasury, but we also delve in to what are the main tasks of a Treasury Assistant and a Treasury Analyst.

Hussam Ali is a Senior Engineering Project Manager, and Guillaume Jouvencel a Senior Consultant in Finance & Treasury. Their current career is not completely irrelevant, but the reason I invited them to the Treasury Career Corner is because earlier this year, they began recording podcast episodes on the ABC’s of Corporate Treasury. And now, they wanted to know more about what a Corporate Treasury career actually means.

In this first episode of our Feature Series together, we discuss how we enter / hear about / touch upon Treasury when you are a young graduate, or even before, with great initiatives such as 1-year placements.

What are the skills, hard and soft, that are required (or to be developed) if you want to enter into Treasury? Strategic thinking, risk tolerance, communication skills are just some of the requirements we talk about!

I then walk them through what the different aspects, tasks and responsibilities are at the entry levels in Corporate Treasury. We cover what being a Treasury Assistant and Treasury Analyst really means, warts and all, and what to expect in terms of salaries.

Last but not least, what makes a Treasury Assistant and Analyst stand out? Putting your hand up is a really good starting point, but not the only one.

When recording this Feature Series, it was important for us to not only scratch the surface, but take the time to discuss all the aspects of the early stages of a career in Treasury. This included talking about the potential redundant aspects of the job, but also discussing all the amazing things there is to see in Corporate Treasury, and how fast one can grow if given the right tools.
