IFS and Masculinity and Jericho Circles with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams
Season 2 · Episode 77
vendredi 22 janvier 2021 • Duration 56:00
On today's episode, I chat with Steve Spitzer and Glenn Williams. Steve, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Suffolk University in Boston, has taught, researched, and written on crime, justice and social control for three decades.
He is Level 2 IFS trained and has presented his use of the IFS model inside prisons at multiple IFS annual conferences and has written articles in the IFS newsletter, The Outlook.
In 2002, he founded the Jericho Circle Project, a non-profit organization that seeks to 'bring down the walls' by creating men's support groups in correctional facilities.
Since the project began, almost 1000 incarcerated men have sat in Jericho Circles in county, state, and federal correctional institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island.
Glenn participated in the Jericho groups when he was incarcerated for 21 years and later met Steve in a different context. Glenn now 'pays it forward' with his organization, Our House Boston.
Glenn is Level One IFS trained and is passionate about spreading the word about our True Essence, especially to black men in urban settings.
Glenn is a reentry advocate and community investor who works with various individuals, families, organizations and businesses to raise awareness about and create solutions to the challenges of incarceration and prisoner reintegration. This conversation is AMAZING. I cannot convey this in words. Here are some themes:
'Self' Discovery
Masculinity
Men's work inside prisons, power of vulnerability, and speaking for parts
'Climbing out of the man box'/Taking off masks
The importance of power in manliness for Black Men
Glenn states, "Who I pretend to be (what my community and society says I need to be in order to survive) and my Essence are not the same thing."
And, "IFS offers the opportunity for Self Discovery and Self Exploration (inside and outside of prison). Discovering that my shame and guilt are parts of me and do not have to define who I am at my core."
To find more about Jericho circle go to https://jerichocircle.org/
Check out this 90 minute documentary on the nature of their group work that was filmed at California State Prison Sacramento. That film, produced by the group that initially mentored them in the work (Inside Circle), will give you a taste of the kind of work done (albeit at a somewhat higher level of intensity than is typical of Jericho Circle’s groups) on their weekends. IFS and Spirituality (and tons of other stuff!) with Frank Anderson
Season 2 · Episode 76
vendredi 15 janvier 2021 • Duration 59:38
On today's episode, I chat with Dr. Frank Anderson, a superstar in the IFS and Trauma world. You may know him as a lead trainer at the IFS Institute, by his PESI workshops, or as the co-author of the IFS Skills Training Manual.
He is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and I assumed we would talk about meds and neurotransmitters.
I was wrong.
Frank is personal, engaging, and hilarious. He shares a lot of his own story and is vulnerable and real. I decided to leave in our entire conversation (instead of cutting out some of the beginning bits) because you get a feel for him right from the start.
We talk about Spirituality and the integration with Science and Research. We talk about LGBTQ plus, lots about complex trauma, and we touch on parenting and substance use. We talk about psychedelics, mediums, and ascended masters (I had to look that up afterwards).
It is a wild ride.

On today's episode I chat with Jay Earley, a popular IFS teacher who authored the book, "Self Therapy" and who leads ongoing IFS courses and groups.
Our chat can be broken up into 3 sections-
1. His story, and similarities and differences between what he teaches and what Dick teaches. He shares his take on unblending and inner critics. He shares his 'GPS of the mind' program.
He states, "I am not competing with IFS."

This is the online tool we discussed:
https://selftherapyjourney.com/
I would love to hear what you think the 'Capacity' is for the word I am trying to find in the middle of the episode. The word was 'Scarcity,' and I MEANT to ask Jay what he thought the capacity was but got lost in trying to find the word! Let me know if you can help me out on this one @ifs.tammy on Instagram and Twitter and The One Inside Facebook Page.
I will see you there.

Season 2 · Episode 72
vendredi 11 décembre 2020 • Duration 01:15:05
On today's episode, I chat with Dorothea Hrossowyc and Ingrid Helander. Ingrid and Dorothea along with Tyler Haaren, Joya Lonsdale, Julia Sullivan, and Paula Shulman led a workshop on "Healing Racism From the Inside Out, Unburdening our Parts around Race and Racism", at the 2016 IFS Annual Conference, and were a part of the plenary session, along with Tyler, Joya and Donna Dellal-Ferme at the 2017 IFS Annual Conference titled Self-Led Activism. Releasing Your Inner Change Agent.
I encourage you to listen and observe your own parts' reactions. Use these as trailheads to do your own work and meet the younger parts of you who hold pain.

They share their own personal stories and their experiences working with their racist parts.
What is said over and over is the power of the model to heal, and the importance of following the trailheads of our own racism to get to our exiles and our own ancestors and legacy burdens.
We talk about so much- indigenous peoples, polyvagal theory, classism, capitalism, grief and shame. And, we laugh... I promise.
Read about The Dakota 38 here
Ingrid has an ebook/workbook that uses IFS and Polyvagel theory to help people with chronic worry. It is found at www.calmyourworries.com
