The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing a notable decline in birth rates. Drivers are complex and gaps in knowledge exist. This Series published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific aims to explore the factors contributing to the low birth rate in the region. In today’s episode, we will hear from our authors, Dr. Cuilin Zhang and Dr. Wei-Jun Jean Yeung, on women’s health and female fertility, and the social determinants of low birth rate in the Asia-Pacific region.

March 24 serves as a reminder to evaluate our progress in eliminating the centuries-old scourge of tuberculosis. 

Dr Swarup Sarkar, Dr Anurag Bhargava, and Dr Mohammed Yassin speak with  Shalini Garg on the historical efforts to eliminate TB alongside the challenges in controlling the disease in the WHO south east Asia region, despite having achieved commendable success in controlling HIV. They also share their vision of how we could achieve the SDG goals and targets on TB.

In the past decade, Latin America experienced major changes in its migration patterns. Historically, most international migration in the region has been motivated by the search of employment, and occurs between adjacent countries, or from countries within the region to high-income countries such as the United States and Spain.

Recently, however, increased numbers of forcibly displaced people have left their countries and traveled longer distances, in many cases by foot, in order to reach safety or escape poverty. Ietza Bojorquez and Baltica Cabieses discuss the main issues related to Migration and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean, touching on aspects including the response of health systems to migrants’ needs, and the effects of climate change on migration and health.
