Martha Carlin: The Proven Benefits of Probiotics

Episode 103

samedi 22 novembre 2025Duration 40:19

I recently sat down with Martha Carlin, founder of BiotiQuest — one of the most trusted names in microbiome science. Her company is breaking new ground in understanding how gut bacteria influence nearly every system in the body.

In this episode, Martha shares how her husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis sparked two decades of research into the microbiome, including what she discovered about how gut bacteria produce key hormones, vitamins, and neurotransmitters, and how damage to the microbiome impacts our metabolism.

We talk about the biggest disruptors of gut health — sugar, antibiotics, stress, and chemicals — and how they tip the microbial balance toward pathogenic strains, leading to inflammation, cravings, mood swings, hormone issues, blood sugar swings and more.

Most importantly, Martha explains how to repair your microbiome and assures us it is possible. (This is where the interview really shines.)

She walks us through the research behind Sugar Shift® (including its impact on A1C and insulin) and why her new formula, Perfect Peace, is helping people feel calmer and more regulated.

If you want a clearer understanding of gut health and how to experience the profound benefits of targeted probiotics — clearer skin, fewer cravings, better digestion, deeper sleep, and more — this episode is for you.

In addition to her expertise, Martha is also offering an exclusive deal:

Mollee Rucker: From Chasing Skinny to Optimizing Health

Episode 102

samedi 5 juillet 2025Duration 47:11

Molly Rucker's path to health wasn't straightforward. After struggling with obesity as a teenager and disordered eating in her twenties, she found herself "skinny" but far from healthy. This disconnect sparked a deep curiosity about what true wellness actually means beyond appearances.

Working at a health food store became the unexpected turning point in Molly's journey, introducing her to traditional foods and the beginning of her exploration into how genetics, neurochemistry, and physiology influence our well-being. Unlike many health approaches that focus on treating symptoms, Molly advocates for making the body "inhospitable to disease" by understanding our unique biological needs.

Molly's fascination with neurochemistry eventually led her to co-found Keto Brains, a nutraceutical company offering a nootropic formulation that enhances cognitive function without the jitters or crashes associated with caffeine. The product combines alpha-GPC to boost acetylcholine (essential for focus), lion's mane mushroom to promote neuronal health, and L-theanine to create calm alertness—all delivered in a creamy MCT oil base that simultaneously supports ketone production.

Beyond supplements, Molly shares profound insights about emotional regulation, explaining how emotions are essentially chemical reactions that typically run their course within 60 seconds. By creating space to observe these reactions rather than feeding them, we can develop resilience that supports our health goals instead of sabotaging them when challenges arise.

Whether you're struggling with caffeine dependence, looking to optimize your cognitive performance, or simply wanting to understand the connection between your emotional responses and your brain chemistry, this conversation offers practical wisdom from someone who's personally walked the path from illness to vibrant health. Molly's science-based yet deeply personal approach reminds us that the journey toward optimal health starts with understanding our individual biology and honoring what our unique systems need to thrive.

Molly shared a discount code for first-time customers of KetoBrainz during the interview. If you're curious about trying her 4-ingredient nootropic blend, use code KICKSUGAR for 20% off your first order.

Dr. Richard Johnson: How Sugar Fuels Cancer, Dementia, and Aging

Episode 93

lundi 21 avril 2025Duration 57:15

Sugar isn't just empty calories – it's an active driver of disease through a fascinating biological mechanism that evolved to help mammals survive food scarcity. In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Richard Johnson, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and author of "Why Nature Wants Us to Be Fat," we explore the unexpected ways fructose hijacks our metabolism.

Dr. Johnson, often described as the "Indiana Jones of nutrition science," reveals how fructose works by actually depleting cellular energy rather than increasing it. This creates a paradoxical situation where our bodies store more fat while simultaneously making us feel exhausted and constantly hungry. The biological pathway, designed to help animals like bears fatten up before hibernation, now works against us in our sugar-saturated world.

Most alarming are the connections between fructose metabolism and serious diseases. Cancer cells specifically seek out fructose to fuel their growth in low-oxygen environments, explaining why certain cancers are strongly associated with high sugar consumption. Even more compelling is the evidence linking fructose to dementia – from the earliest stages of cognitive decline showing the exact biological signature of fructose metabolism to animal studies demonstrating memory impairment after just two weeks of sugar exposure.

Perhaps most surprising is Dr. Johnson's revelation that our bodies can manufacture fructose internally, especially during mild dehydration or when consuming salty foods. This explains why the combination of salt and carbohydrates is particularly problematic for weight management – they signal our bodies to convert glucose to fructose and store fat.

The good news? Understanding this pathway opens doors to protection through specific nutrients like omega-3s and vitamin C, and explains why low-carbohydrate approaches can be so effective. Whether you're concerned about weight, cognitive health, or cancer prevention, this conversation offers practical insights into breaking free from sugar's powerful grip on your metabolism.

Netta Gorman: How Going Sugar-Free Can Change Your Life

Episode 3

mercredi 20 juillet 2022Duration 33:13

In this episode, I interview my friend and fellow coach, Netta Gorman.

Netta's story begins with a visit to a naturopathic doctor who suggested she stop eating wheat and sugar to see if her headaches, bloating and low energy would improve. Netta flat-out refused. She thought that suggestion was nothing short of crazy. After all, she wasn't overweight and eating sugar was normal.

One day, however, her digestive issues were bad enough that Netta decided to give up these foods as an experiment. She felt so awful the first day she went to bed early and didn't leave her bedroom for 3 days. On the 3rd day, she woke up and felt a shift. Something had lifted. A breakthrough had happened.

Netta went on to not only ditch the white powders but transform her mind and body and later started an online club called Life After Sugar.

Tune in to hear her inspiring story and what life after sugar is all about.

David Wolfe: Letting Go of Addictive Food Behaviors and Choosing Abstinence

Episode 2

mercredi 13 juillet 2022Duration 42:13

In this episode, I interview David Wolfe who has an incredible story of sugar/ food addiction recovery.

As a child, he witnessed his mother - also a food addict - morph into a different person based on what she was eating. Even at a young age, he knew processed food affected how his mother mothered him. David understands food addiction from the perspective of a child of a food addict and a food addict in recovery himself.

David's recovery is particularly unique because, in addition to putting down sugar, flour and alcohol, he also weaned himself off ADHD medications (no small feat) and walked away from his artisan sourdough bread baking career (equally hard).

David is living proof of the healing and transformation that is possible when we choose to let go of addictive food behaviours and embrace new and better ways of living. He will be the first to say, it wasn't easy but it was definitely worth it.

Today, David is a registered dietitian and a food addiction counsellor trained under Bitten Jonsson.

Maria Emmerich: How to Overcome Weight Loss Stalls on Low Carb

Episode 92

vendredi 4 avril 2025Duration 53:41

What happens when eating "clean keto" or carnivore still isn't working for your metabolism? Why are some people gaining weight despite following popular low-carb advice? Nutritionist Maria Emmerich breaks down the science behind these frustrating scenarios and offers practical solutions that work even when everything else has failed.

Maria introduces us to the Protein Sparing Modified Fast method – a strategic approach that preserves precious muscle while creating the caloric deficit needed to burn stubborn body fat. Rather than a daily practice, this method serves as a powerful tool to deploy strategically when weight loss stalls or during periods of higher indulgence like holidays. With approximately 800 calories of primarily lean protein, this approach allows your body to tap into stored fat while maintaining metabolic health.

The conversation tackles a controversial truth in the low-carb world: calories still matter. Maria shares stories of clients who came to her after gaining significant weight on unlimited ribeye-and-butter approaches, explaining the science of why fat cells become "overstuffed" leading to worsening insulin resistance even on clean foods. She dismantles the myth that you can eat unlimited amounts of any food – even healthy animal products – without metabolic consequences.

Perhaps most encouraging is Maria's insight about taste adaptation: your taste buds completely regenerate every 15 days. This biological reality means that transitioning away from hyperpalatable processed foods becomes significantly easier after just two weeks of consistent clean eating. For those battling intense sugar cravings, this perspective offers hope that the struggle has a definitive endpoint if you can maintain consistency through the adaptation phase.

From sleep optimization strategies to the truth about protein needs (hint: you probably need more than you think), Maria's practical advice cuts through nutrition confusion with evidence-based clarity. Whether you're struggling with autoimmune issues, weight loss plateaus, or simply want to optimize your low-carb approach, this episode delivers actionable insights to transform your relationship with food and reclaim metabolic health.

Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson: Why Some Foods Are Harder to Quit Than Cocaine

Episode 91

jeudi 27 mars 2025Duration 49:25

Dr. Susan Pierce Thompson delivers a powerful exploration into the complex reality of ultra-processed food addiction and the revolutionary approaches that enable sustainable recovery and weight loss. With her unique background as both a recovered drug addict and a brain scientist, Thompson brings extraordinary credibility to this conversation about why some foods trigger addictive patterns more powerfully than even cocaine or methamphetamine.

The podcast reveals exciting developments in how the scientific community is finally recognizing the legitimacy of ultra-processed food addiction. Thompson describes the recent consensus reached by 40 international experts working to have this condition recognized by the World Health Organization—a critical step toward better treatment protocols and policy changes. This recognition isn't just academic—it could transform how schools, healthcare systems, and governments approach our relationship with food.

Thompson's Bright Line Eating program demonstrates what's possible when we apply addiction medicine principles to our relationship with food. Their groundbreaking six-year follow-up research shows participants maintaining an average 14% weight loss—outperforming even the most celebrated weight loss medications without their side effects or costs. The "bright lines" approach creates clear boundaries around sugar, flour, meals, and quantities, helping participants develop automatic habits that remove the exhausting decision fatigue around eating.

Perhaps most compelling is Thompson's raw comparison between drug addiction and food addiction recovery. After 30 years of sobriety from substances, she shares why food addiction presented an even greater challenge: "There's nowhere safe to go in society when you're in recovery from food... your whole life is a cue to break your abstinence." Unlike recovering drug addicts who can avoid trigger environments, food addicts face constant exposure, making their recovery journey uniquely difficult but ultimately more rewarding.

Whether you're struggling with your relationship with food or simply curious about the science behind sustainable weight loss, this conversation offers profound insights that might forever change how you view ultra-processed foods and the possibility of true freedom from food obsession.
