Breaking the Silence: Addressing Mental Health Challenges in HR with Dr. Jo Burrell

Episode 264

dimanche 15 juin 2025Duration 32:10

Lucinda welcomes returning guest Dr. Jo Burrell, a clinical psychologist and co-founder of Ultimate Resilience. They delve into the alarming findings of the latest HR Wellbeing Report, which reveals that nearly half of HR professionals are experiencing clinical levels of depression, significantly higher than the general population. With over 1,400 respondents, the report highlights a stark disparity between the mental health struggles faced by HR professionals and the support they receive. Jo discusses the importance of open conversations about mental wellbeing in the HR field, the need for systemic support such as supervision, and practical tips for building resilience. KEY TAKEAWAYS The recent HR wellbeing report revealed that 44% of HR professionals meet the threshold for clinical levels of depression, which is 2.5 times higher than the general population. Additionally, 63% are likely experiencing significant symptoms of burnout. Despite the high levels of suffering, only 13% of HR professionals reported feeling very supported at work regarding their mental wellbeing. This indicates a significant gap between the mental health challenges faced and the support available. There is a "conspiracy of silence" surrounding HR wellbeing, where professionals feel they cannot express their struggles. Encouraging open discussions about mental health and creating a supportive environment is crucial for addressing these issues. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential for preventing burnout. HR professionals need to be assertive in protecting their time and wellbeing, which includes disconnecting from work after hours. BEST MOMENTS "What we found was 44% of respondents meeting the threshold for clinical levels of depression, which is two and a half times higher than we would expect to see in the general population." "There's a big disparity between the level of suffering and the degree of support that's available for people." "I think there's been a lack of acknowledgement that this has become a profession that is incredibly challenging." High Performance HR - How To Make Continuous Performance Management A Reality

Episode 263

dimanche 25 mai 2025Duration 37:43

Lucinda continues the High Performance HR series by focussing on the critical elements of performance management that drive high performance within organisations. She talks about the importance of clear goals, regular feedback, ongoing development, and a supportive culture in fostering employee engagement and performance. Lucinda also outlines practical strategies for implementing continuous performance management, moving away from traditional annual appraisals to a more dynamic approach that includes regular check-ins and coaching conversations. KEY TAKEAWAYS High performance is driven by clear goals supported by regular, constructive feedback. Engaging employees in setting their own SMART goals significantly enhances their engagement and performance. Moving away from traditional annual appraisals to a culture of ongoing performance conversations is essential. Regular check-ins, goal adjustments, and developmental feedback foster a dynamic and responsive work environment. Ongoing development and coaching are critical for employee engagement and performance. Managers should adopt a collaborative coaching style, encouraging employees to reflect on their performance and identify areas for improvement. Acknowledging high performance behaviours boosts morale and reinforces desired actions. Recognition should be timely and specific to ensure employees feel valued and motivated. BEST MOMENTS "Clear goals supported by regular feedback is the most consistently cited way to achieve high performance." "Continuous performance management is trying to create a culture of ongoing dialogue between managers and employees." "If goal setting is a living, breathing process, it’s not something that’s gathering dust in a drawer for years." "Employees who receive daily feedback from their managers are three times more likely to be engaged than those who receive just annual feedback." Helen Ketteringham - NCFE - CPO Career Journeys

Episode 254

lundi 17 février 2025Duration 35:25

Lucinda is joined by Helen Ketteringham, the Chief People Officer at NCFE, an education charity based in the North East of England. Helen shares her journey in HR, detailing her 20 years of experience across various sectors, including retail and financial services, before stepping into her current role. She discusses the importance of navigating uncertainty in leadership, the value of a coaching culture, and the significance of continuous learning. KEY TAKEAWAYS A commitment to lifelong learning is essential for personal and professional growth. Adopting a learning mindset helps navigate the complexities and uncertainties of the workplace. Establishing a coaching culture within an organisation is crucial. It not only empowers leaders to support their teams effectively but also fosters a collaborative environment where individuals can develop their skills and self-awareness. Comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty is a vital skill for leaders, especially in HR roles. Embracing change and viewing it as an opportunity can lead to innovative solutions and better organisational outcomes. Building strong networks both internally and externally enhances the ability to address challenges and leverage diverse expertise. Collaboration is key to achieving strategic goals and fostering a supportive workplace culture. BEST MOMENTS "What I was looking for was a real sort of sense of purpose and meaning... it was definitely meaning I was looking for and it's definitely delivered on that." "I think the biggest difference for me... is around navigating uncertainty... we need to understand that ourselves." "If you're somebody who really likes certainty, you feel like you need to have all the answers... but in actual fact, no one has all the answers." "It's about linking through those approaches to business outcomes further down the line... storytelling is really helpful." How Supporting Dads Is The Key To Gender Equality - with Ian Dinwiddy

Episode 164

dimanche 19 juin 2022Duration 33:59

Ian Dinwiddy is the founder of Inspiring Dads, which aims to help HR Leaders support their new dads, enhancing gender equality at home and at work, and improve well-being, performance and culture. Ian joins Lucinda this week, to talk about why inspiring and supporting new dads across organisations provides a significant route to gender equality. KEY TAKEAWAYS A parental transition for anyone is tricky, and requires support. But in the case of dads, there is a tendency to sometimes overlook their needs, or be slightly more dismissive. Slipping into gender stereotyping can be very easy when we become parents. Tradition suggests that women should remain home and men should immediately return to work. But we live in a world where conversations about this stereotyping should be encouraged. We must remove the stigma surrounding men who choose to be the one to stay at home. In terms of equality, the companies that stand out are the ones who combine their policies on leave, and look for overarching strategies that work for any case. Allowing men to take leave will eventually re-align the stereotypical way of thinking - that becoming a parent makes you somehow less effective in the workplace. BEST MOMENTS 'We helped stressed dads to balance work and fatherhood' 'In order to promote gender equality, it should be just as easy for men to stay at home' 'However you become a parent, you are entitled to the same amount of leave' 'It changes your perspective of roles and responsibilities in the business' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/   www.changesuperhero.com www.hruprising.com          Ian Dinwiddy LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/iandinwiddy/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Lucinda Carney is a Business Psychologist with 15 years in Senior Corporate L&D roles and a further 10 as CEO of Actus Software where she worked closely with HR colleagues helping them to solve the same challenges across a huge range of industries. Embracing Data - with Laura Overton

Episode 163

dimanche 12 juin 2022Duration 38:18

Laura Overton is an award winning learning analyst dedicated to uncovering and sharing effective practices in learning innovation that lead to business value. As the founder of Towards Maturity, she is also known for leading the first 15 years of a longitudinal study programme (2004 – February 2019) respected for uncovering and share learning strategies that lead to business success. Laura joins Lucinda to discuss data itself, and why some people are fearful of being too data-driven when it comes to people management. KEY TAKEAWAYS Because of the emphasis on technology, AI and big data, there seems to be a general movement towards collating these many data sources and examining the way in which it can impact our organisations. Data is all about evidence and evidence is about proving. It isn't just useful in proving our value, but also the ways in which we can improve and disprove. As people professionals, when you say the word data, we conflate this with the concept of proving return on investment. There are so many different sources of data. As an industry, it is critical that we are critical thinkers and look for where the biases may lay. But it is also crucial that we do not become hyper-critical. BEST MOMENTS 'Without data, our work hasn't necessarily been as tangible' 'Being data driven is about being curious and willing to look at alternative sources of insight and information' 'It's about improving. it might even be about disproving something' 'Data actually liberates us' About the Guest, Laura Overton Laura Overton is an experienced international speaker, author and facilitator with a passion for exploring, challenging and sharing. Laura believes that the role of learning leaders in the changing workplace is to unlock the potential of business and people. Certainly, her goal has always been to help learning leaders ensure that their organisations are equipped and ready through outcome-led and evidence informed practice. Also, Laura led a global research programme for 15 years, bringing a community of practitioners, policy makers, experts and suppliers together to investigate how learning innovation delivers business value. Outplacement Masterclass - with June Hogan

Episode 162

dimanche 5 juin 2022Duration 30:27

June Hogan is the director of Wildwood Coaching, and joins Lucinda to talk about the topic of outplacement, the practice of ensuring that outgoing employees are given every chance at a successful future outside of the organisation, which can result in positive impact upon company brand, loyalty and retention. KEY TAKEAWAYS When dealing with people, it is crucial to remember that everyone is unique, and must be treated as such. It is about finding out who the individual is, and the circumstances that have led them to this point. A redundancy can negatively impact confidence in a huge way. Roles are made redundant rather than individuals, but we form close-knit bonds to the roles we assume. Change itself comes with a fluctuating set of responses. Some dig in their heels and do not embrace change, but then this feeling can shift to one of receptiveness, and a need to be heard. The benefits of outplacement support, and treating outgoing people with support, is that it creates a more positive view of you as an employer to those who remain. BEST MOMENTS 'Outplacement can be done really well or really badly' 'We are all about the individual' 'All there is, is a need to support and to help people move forwards' 'A redundancy inevitably impacts motivation' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/   www.changesuperhero.com www.hruprising.com          Wildwood Coaching - https://wildwoodcoaching.co.uk About the Guest, June Hogan June Hogan is a Career Coach and Outplacement Specialist and works with HR professionals managing redundancies. Offering Outplacement Support ensures those who leave to feel positive about the future, those who remain can see you did the right thing and it helps to protect company brand and reputation. With 20 years corporate HR experience, personal and professional experience of redundancy and a recent coaching qualification, in 2019 June decided to set up her own business and specialise in Outplacement Support. June Hogan: "I find Outplacement Support incredibly rewarding work, it’s a privilege to support people at what is often a difficult time in their lives and to know I've played a part in their journey to shape their future". https://www.linkedin.com/in/junehogan/ ABOUT THE HOST Lucinda Carney is a Business Psychologist with 15 years in Senior Corporate L&D roles and a further 10 as CEO of Actus Software where she worked closely with HR colleagues helping them to solve the same challenges across a huge range of industries. Psychology Based Games - with Lauren Fitzpatrick Shanks

Episode 161

dimanche 29 mai 2022Duration 40:22

Lauren Fitzpatrick Shanks is an entrepreneur, award-winning engineer, tech leader, writer, mentor, wife, mother of two, former gymnast and the Founder and CEO of KeepWOL. KeepWOL is a game-centric talent development platform focusing on the human elements of work that make or break organisations using multiplayer games, AI technology, and end-to-end learning integration. In this episode, Lauren talks about how this strategy can maximise cultural intelligence and build exceptional teams. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even from an early age, we take on far more knowledge through play than we do through conventional means, such as relaying data and memorising. We must ask questions that allow people to share what they want of themselves, rather than cornering them into revealing uncomfortable truths. By allowing participants to provide contextual details, it promotes a sense of belonging, and also enhances empathy, vulnerability and emotional connection. Curiosity, courage and connection are the keystones of the techniques and methodologies for facilitation. BEST MOMENTS 'We're focussed on building relationships through play' 'Conversation is a big piece of this' 'Our games feature storytelling to elevate that human experience' 'Build connection by having yourself be vulnerable so that others recognise that they too can be vulnerable' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/   www.changesuperhero.com www.hruprising.com          Lauren Fitzpatrick Shanks - https://www.laurenfitzpatrickshanks.com ABOUT THE HOST Lucinda Carney is a Business Psychologist with 15 years in Senior Corporate L&D roles and a further 10 as CEO of Actus Software where she worked closely with HR colleagues helping them to solve the same challenges across a huge range of industries. Gender Diversity In Leadership - with Rachel Gilfrin

Episode 160

dimanche 22 mai 2022Duration 43:12

Lucinda is joined by Rachel Gilfrin, a confidence coach and gender diversity specialist, to discuss the ways in which organisations can empower female talent by creating confidence, shifting mindsets and shaping new progression paths in the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS Women often feel as though they have to behave like someone else in order to be seen as a potential leader, which masks our true selves. In order for us to be confident, we need to have a good understanding of our mindset and the way we deal with situations. In order to express ourselves properly, we need to be confident. Women often feel duty bound to prioritise child care and the new world of home schooling. This cannot help but find itself transferred into the workplace. Organisations could be sitting on a goldmine of untapped talent, but do not know it because they fail to encourage people to speak out and share their views and talents. BEST MOMENTS 'I had to turn up my masculine characteristics and turn down my feminine instincts in order to fit in' 'True confidence comes with self-acceptance' 'There's so much guilt from women, coming from the areas in life they're trying to juggle' 'How much untapped talent is in your organisation?' Engagement Strategies For A Hybrid World

Episode 158

dimanche 8 mai 2022Duration 30:09

One of the biggest challenges that leaders and HR professionals face in this new hybrid world, is the issue of how to ensure that our people remain engaged from a distance. In this episode, Lucinda talks you through a variety of invaluable strategies designed to make sure this can be achieved. KEY TAKEAWAYS The definition of engagement is disputed, with many wondering if it is a process or an output. But the key to engagement is the recognition that it is important. Engagement needs to be as individualised as possible. We must try to think of it less as a one-size-fits-all process, and encourage managers to personalise where possible. Engagement is driven by some key drivers: having a supportive manager, clarity of role and alignment with strategic purpose, ongoing conversations with timely feedback, trust, autonomy and empowerment, opportunities to learn and grow, level of fit or belonging, regular strength based conversations, or natural own conscious state.
