E707 - Odd Things Promoted Via Podcasting - Are You Falling Victim To Bad Podcast Advice - Practical Podcasting Tips

Episode 707

jeudi 4 juin 2026Duration 19:19

Episode 707 - Odd Things Promoted Via Podcasting - Are You Falling Victim To Bad Podcast Advice - Practical Podcasting Tips

Ok, this is getting a bit ridiculous! I had a client reach out to me and ask if they should become a "Certified Podcaster" I asked them a few questions, certified by whom? Is this a real thing? Sounds strange to me?!

I know and respect many podcasters that have been podcasting from the dawn of time, they aren't certified! I am not certified! Certification is a fancy term for gatekeeping. Certified is a way to separate people into groups, those with certification, those without!

I can go to my local office supply store, buy some highlighters, paper clips, paper, pens and a bunch of business cards and ta da! Dave is a coach! Then, I can create a funnel/certification in Canva in a few minutes, slap a $2000 fee to it and sell it to well-meaning, hard working podcasters as the next must have in podcasting. The problem? There isn't a need for it, and, the person offering this certification is just creating something out of nothing and then convincing unsuspecting podcasters to buy the thing that we haven't needed, ever!

Would you respect me more if I was certified? Well I am not going to spend thousands of dollars to buy a meaningless title that the podcast industry does not need.

Going to an accredited source, trusted, proven and certified to certify others is one thing - creating a certification in Canva is something quite the opposite!

Please do not, I repeat, do not spend money on something that really is not a real thing - like being a "Certified Podcaster or Podcast Coach"

Snake Oil Salespeople exist - buyer beware, results vary, research everything before you spend any amount of money with anyone, on anything in podcasting.

If you are not sure about someone's offer, let's chat before you hit "Add to Cart" on the next psudeo, disingenuous and made up thing created to sell to you - buyer beware!

Framed as a candid “rant,” the conversation pulls back the curtain on so-called podcast gurus who promote expensive certifications and courses that promise credibility but often deliver little real value.

At the heart of the episode is a clear warning: not everything labeled as “professional development” in podcasting is worth your time or money. The idea of becoming a “certified podcast coach” is challenged, with the argument that many of these credentials are self-created, lack oversight, and exist primarily as revenue streams rather than meaningful education. Unlike traditional institutions with established standards, these programs often rely on perceived authority rather than proven substance.

The episode emphasizes that podcasting has no governing body or universal certification standard. Success in this space is not determined by a title or diploma, but by consistency, authenticity, and the value you bring to your audience. Listeners are encouraged to question offers that create urgency or imply that they are “not enough” without paid validation.

Beyond the critique, there is a strong reaffirmation of what truly matters in podcasting: connection. Real growth comes from building genuine relationships with listeners, not from chasing status symbols. A simple but powerful example is shared through personalized audience engagement, such as sending custom video responses to supporters. These small, human moments create lasting impact and loyalty in a way no certificate can.

The episode also reinforces a philosophy of accessibility and community. Podcasting should remain an open platform where anyone can share their voice without financial barriers or artificial gatekeeping. While learning and investing in your craft are valuable, they should be done with intention and discernment.

Episode 232 - Podcast Audio Editing Tool Demonstration - Adobe Podcast - Get Better Audio for Your Next Episode

Adobe has recently released a new tool called Adobe Speech Enhance, a part of their Adobe Podcast suite of AI tools. Ease of Use

To use the web app, simply drag in your audio file and wait for it to render. As of this writing, expect it to process about 10 seconds of audio in a minute.

Could not be easier. This is next-level user interface.

A Bad Recording Day

Rescuing Backup Recordings. Sometimes your primary recording device fails. When it does, you can use whatever backup audio from whatever mics happen to be around.

Cleaning Up Walk-and-Talks. If you record in a noisy environment with traffic, or other noise.

Lecture Rescue. Lectures are often known for having bad audio. This just fixes that.

Travel Recordings. Pro travel setups can be really annoying and heavy. New plan: Leave the setup at home and record remotely with your phone.

Remote Interviews. Conducting interviews over video conferencing software can result in varied audio quality due to different mics and environments. Adobe Speech Enhance can unify the sound quality for a more professional output. You don’t need to care if your guest has a great mic setup!

Public Speaking Events. This tool can clean up live event recordings for later broadcasts or archives.

Historical Archiving. Old audio recordings that suffer from degradation or noise could potentially be cleaned up for historical or educational purposes.

E231 - What Are Your Thoughts on Email Marketing - and Neil Young Podcasting in the New World

Episode 231

Episode 231 - What Are Your Thoughts on Email Marketing - and Neil Young Podcasting in the New World

Can we just podcast? We start our show and then we need to be a marketing expert, we need to post 3 social media posts within 72 hours for every episode, we have to livestream our podcast recording, we have to be on every social platform, we have to find a sponsor and make money with our podcast, we need 100,000 listens per episode within 24 hours, we need to do this and that, and that and that.... Really?

I am asking for your opinion on Email Marketing - do you have an email marketing list for your show? As a community member have you signed up for emails from your favourite content creator? Do you read every email that you receive?

Do you want me to start an email maketing plan for this show? I will do this if you want a little more Dave in your week - I would love to hear from you on this! Please use the polling feature within this episode, email me directly or use my speakpipe link on my website - where do you sit on the idea of email marketing.

Also, check out the short clip from an upcoming episode of the Living the Next Chapter Podcast where I had the opportunity to meet with Bob Young, the older brother of a Canadian Musical Icon - Neil Young!

E504 - Newton's Cradle - Simple Desk Toy or Action Incentive to change for podcasters

Episode 504

mardi 18 novembre 2025Duration 15:33

Episode 504 - Newton's Cradle - Simple Desk Toy or Action Incentive to change for podcasters

You've probably seen this contraption before: Five small silver balls hang in a perfectly straight line by thin threads that attach them to two parallel horizontal bars, which are in turn attached to a base. They sit on office desks around the world.

If you pull a ball up and out and then release it, it falls back and collides with the others with a loud click. Then, instead of all four remaining balls swinging out, only the ball on the opposite end jumps forward, leaving its comrades behind, hanging still. That ball slows to a stop and then falls back, and all five are briefly reunited before the first ball is pushed away from the group again.

This is a Newton's cradle, also called a Newton's rocker or a ball clicker. It was so-named in 1967 by English actor Simon Prebble, in honor of his countryman and revolutionary physicist Isaac Newton.

Despite its seemingly simple design, the Newton's cradle and its swinging, clicking balls isn't just an ordinary desk toy. It is, in fact, an elegant demonstration of some of the most fundamental laws of physics and mechanics.

The toy illustrates the three main physics principles at work: conservation of energy, conservation of momentum and friction. In this article, we'll look at those principles, at elastic and inelastic collisions, and kinetic and potential energy. We'll also examine the work of such great thinkers as Rene Descartes, Christiaan Huygens and Isaac Newton himself. How does this relate to podcasting? What you put out to the world will come back to you in equal measure - whether that is kindess or unkindness, encouragement or discouragement - if you are looking to grow your podcast, help someone else grow their podcast. If you are looking for money for your podcast, give to another podcast. If you want reviews, give reviews. Don't give to get - give to give and it will be returned to you - it might not come back to you exactly as you gave but it will return to you with the same impact, just like Newton's Cradle

E230 - Hook, Line, and Listen - Crafting Compelling Podcast Introductions

Episode 230

lundi 1 avril 2024Duration 28:36

Episode 230 - Hook, Line, and Listen - Crafting Compelling Podcast Introductions

The Significance of a Strong Podcast Introduction

Research reveals that podcasts experience a notable drop-off in listenership, ranging from 20 to 35 percent, within the first five minutes—an attention-catching statistic considering the subsequent retention rate. Therefore, the value of crafting an engaging podcast intro becomes evident: failing to captivate your audience within this critical timeframe can lead to lost listenership.

Curious about how to craft an enticing introduction? Explore this video for insightful tips on initiating a podcast episode, followed by a comprehensive discussion on the essentials of podcast intros.

Crafting an Impactful Podcast Intro

A compelling podcast introduction should not only introduce your podcast and its purpose but also entice both new and existing listeners. Effective introductions often include a teaser of forthcoming content to captivate the audience's interest. Incorporating on-brand music or sound effects enhances the overall appeal, while a clear call to action (CTA) encourages listener engagement.

For instance, the immensely popular podcast "How I Built This with Guy Raz," recorded using Riverside, exemplifies an exemplary podcast intro. With millions of monthly listeners, this podcast excels in all key aspects of a successful intro:

  1. Justification for Listening: The episode seamlessly transitions from a sponsorship message to a teaser of the guest's interview, immediately showcasing the episode's value through a captivating story snippet.

  2. Personal Connection: Introducing the podcast's premise and episode theme hooks the audience while setting the tone for an engaging listening experience.

  3. Establishing Credibility: By providing a brief overview of the podcast and the episode's guest, the host demonstrates expertise and adds further incentive for continued listening.

  4. Setting the Mood: The choice of music complements the show's personality, enhancing the narrative's impact and creating a memorable experience for listeners.

  5. Conciseness: Despite the podcast's lengthy episodes, the introduction remains succinct, maintaining audience engagement within a brief timeframe.

  6. Effective CTA: Guy Raz encourages listeners to support the podcast by purchasing his book, seamlessly integrating a call to action without detracting from the episode's flow.

Crafting Your Podcast Intro

When scripting your podcast intro, adhere to these fundamental principles:

  1. Clearly state the podcast's name and purpose.
  2. Provide compelling reasons for listeners to tune in.
  3. Introduce the host and any guests, establishing credibility and fostering audience connection.

Ultimately, your podcast intro serves as the gateway to your content, shaping listeners' initial impressions and influencing their decision to stay engaged. By adhering to best practices and infusing your unique brand personality, you can create a captivating introduction that captivates and retains your audience.

Perplexity.ai a competitor to Chat GPT - get source data for results with this new a.i. tool

samedi 30 mars 2024Duration 09:25

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Perplexity.ai a competitor to Chat GPT - get source data for results with this new a.i. tool

Are you using A.I. in your podcast - I learned about Perplexity.ai in our recent weekly How To Podcast Community Meetup (you should join us!) What I love about Perplexity.ai is that it sources the results when you use it (unlike Chat GPT) This allows you to see where it is pulling the information from in your search and go deeper on your own and to credit sources for your audience.

I asked Perplexity.ai this question and this was the result given:

Here is a concise answer to the question "four things a new podcaster needs to know before starting a podcast":

1 - Define your "what" and "why" - Clearly identify the topic and purpose of your podcast from the beginning. This will help guide all your other decisions.

2 - Understand the time commitment - Creating and maintaining a quality podcast takes significant time for planning, recording, editing, and publishing. Be realistic about the time required.

3 - Establish a consistent publishing schedule - Commit to releasing new episodes on a regular basis, whether weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. This helps build a loyal listener base.

4 - Invest in quality equipment - Using professional-grade microphones and editing tools will greatly improve your podcast's audio quality and production value.

The key is to thoroughly plan and prepare before launching your podcast, rather than rushing into it. Taking the time upfront to define your goals, manage your time, create a schedule, and use the right equipment will set you up for long-term success.
