E707 - Odd Things Promoted Via Podcasting - Are You Falling Victim To Bad Podcast Advice - Practical Podcasting Tips04 Jun 202600:19:19

Episode 707 - Odd Things Promoted Via Podcasting - Are You Falling Victim To Bad Podcast Advice - Practical Podcasting Tips

Ok, this is getting a bit ridiculous! I had a client reach out to me and ask if they should become a "Certified Podcaster" I asked them a few questions, certified by whom? Is this a real thing? Sounds strange to me?!

I know and respect many podcasters that have been podcasting from the dawn of time, they aren't certified! I am not certified! Certification is a fancy term for gatekeeping. Certified is a way to separate people into groups, those with certification, those without!

I can go to my local office supply store, buy some highlighters, paper clips, paper, pens and a bunch of business cards and ta da! Dave is a coach! Then, I can create a funnel/certification in Canva in a few minutes, slap a $2000 fee to it and sell it to well-meaning, hard working podcasters as the next must have in podcasting. The problem? There isn't a need for it, and, the person offering this certification is just creating something out of nothing and then convincing unsuspecting podcasters to buy the thing that we haven't needed, ever!

Would you respect me more if I was certified? Well I am not going to spend thousands of dollars to buy a meaningless title that the podcast industry does not need.

Going to an accredited source, trusted, proven and certified to certify others is one thing - creating a certification in Canva is something quite the opposite!

Please do not, I repeat, do not spend money on something that really is not a real thing - like being a "Certified Podcaster or Podcast Coach"

Snake Oil Salespeople exist - buyer beware, results vary, research everything before you spend any amount of money with anyone, on anything in podcasting.

If you are not sure about someone's offer, let's chat before you hit "Add to Cart" on the next psudeo, disingenuous and made up thing created to sell to you - buyer beware!

Framed as a candid “rant,” the conversation pulls back the curtain on so-called podcast gurus who promote expensive certifications and courses that promise credibility but often deliver little real value.

At the heart of the episode is a clear warning: not everything labeled as “professional development” in podcasting is worth your time or money. The idea of becoming a “certified podcast coach” is challenged, with the argument that many of these credentials are self-created, lack oversight, and exist primarily as revenue streams rather than meaningful education. Unlike traditional institutions with established standards, these programs often rely on perceived authority rather than proven substance.

The episode emphasizes that podcasting has no governing body or universal certification standard. Success in this space is not determined by a title or diploma, but by consistency, authenticity, and the value you bring to your audience. Listeners are encouraged to question offers that create urgency or imply that they are “not enough” without paid validation.

Beyond the critique, there is a strong reaffirmation of what truly matters in podcasting: connection. Real growth comes from building genuine relationships with listeners, not from chasing status symbols. A simple but powerful example is shared through personalized audience engagement, such as sending custom video responses to supporters. These small, human moments create lasting impact and loyalty in a way no certificate can.

The episode also reinforces a philosophy of accessibility and community. Podcasting should remain an open platform where anyone can share their voice without financial barriers or artificial gatekeeping. While learning and investing in your craft are valuable, they should be done with intention and discernment.

E232 - Podcast Audio Editing Tool Demonstration - Adobe Podcast - Get Better Audio for Your Next Episode05 Apr 202400:21:32

Episode 232 - Podcast Audio Editing Tool Demonstration - Adobe Podcast - Get Better Audio for Your Next Episode

Adobe has recently released a new tool called Adobe Speech Enhance, a part of their Adobe Podcast suite of AI tools. Ease of Use

To use the web app, simply drag in your audio file and wait for it to render. As of this writing, expect it to process about 10 seconds of audio in a minute.

Could not be easier. This is next-level user interface.

A Bad Recording Day

Rescuing Backup Recordings. Sometimes your primary recording device fails. When it does, you can use whatever backup audio from whatever mics happen to be around.

Cleaning Up Walk-and-Talks. If you record in a noisy environment with traffic, or other noise.

Lecture Rescue. Lectures are often known for having bad audio. This just fixes that.

Travel Recordings. Pro travel setups can be really annoying and heavy. New plan: Leave the setup at home and record remotely with your phone.

Remote Interviews. Conducting interviews over video conferencing software can result in varied audio quality due to different mics and environments. Adobe Speech Enhance can unify the sound quality for a more professional output. You don’t need to care if your guest has a great mic setup!

Public Speaking Events. This tool can clean up live event recordings for later broadcasts or archives.

Historical Archiving. Old audio recordings that suffer from degradation or noise could potentially be cleaned up for historical or educational purposes.

Episode 231 - What Are Your Thoughts on Email Marketing - and Neil Young Podcasting in the New World

Can we just podcast? We start our show and then we need to be a marketing expert, we need to post 3 social media posts within 72 hours for every episode, we have to livestream our podcast recording, we have to be on every social platform, we have to find a sponsor and make money with our podcast, we need 100,000 listens per episode within 24 hours, we need to do this and that, and that and that.... Really?

I am asking for your opinion on Email Marketing - do you have an email marketing list for your show? As a community member have you signed up for emails from your favourite content creator? Do you read every email that you receive?

Do you want me to start an email maketing plan for this show? I will do this if you want a little more Dave in your week - I would love to hear from you on this! Please use the polling feature within this episode, email me directly or use my speakpipe link on my website - where do you sit on the idea of email marketing.

E504 - Newton's Cradle - Simple Desk Toy or Action Incentive to change for podcasters18 Nov 202500:15:33

Episode 504 - Newton's Cradle - Simple Desk Toy or Action Incentive to change for podcasters

You've probably seen this contraption before: Five small silver balls hang in a perfectly straight line by thin threads that attach them to two parallel horizontal bars, which are in turn attached to a base. They sit on office desks around the world.

If you pull a ball up and out and then release it, it falls back and collides with the others with a loud click. Then, instead of all four remaining balls swinging out, only the ball on the opposite end jumps forward, leaving its comrades behind, hanging still. That ball slows to a stop and then falls back, and all five are briefly reunited before the first ball is pushed away from the group again.

This is a Newton's cradle, also called a Newton's rocker or a ball clicker. It was so-named in 1967 by English actor Simon Prebble, in honor of his countryman and revolutionary physicist Isaac Newton.

Despite its seemingly simple design, the Newton's cradle and its swinging, clicking balls isn't just an ordinary desk toy. It is, in fact, an elegant demonstration of some of the most fundamental laws of physics and mechanics.

The toy illustrates the three main physics principles at work: conservation of energy, conservation of momentum and friction. In this article, we'll look at those principles, at elastic and inelastic collisions, and kinetic and potential energy. We'll also examine the work of such great thinkers as Rene Descartes, Christiaan Huygens and Isaac Newton himself. How does this relate to podcasting? What you put out to the world will come back to you in equal measure - whether that is kindess or unkindness, encouragement or discouragement - if you are looking to grow your podcast, help someone else grow their podcast. If you are looking for money for your podcast, give to another podcast. If you want reviews, give reviews. Don't give to get - give to give and it will be returned to you - it might not come back to you exactly as you gave but it will return to you with the same impact, just like Newton's Cradle

E230 - Hook, Line, and Listen - Crafting Compelling Podcast Introductions01 Apr 202400:28:36

Episode 230 - Hook, Line, and Listen - Crafting Compelling Podcast Introductions

The Significance of a Strong Podcast Introduction

Research reveals that podcasts experience a notable drop-off in listenership, ranging from 20 to 35 percent, within the first five minutes—an attention-catching statistic considering the subsequent retention rate. Therefore, the value of crafting an engaging podcast intro becomes evident: failing to captivate your audience within this critical timeframe can lead to lost listenership.

Curious about how to craft an enticing introduction? Explore this video for insightful tips on initiating a podcast episode, followed by a comprehensive discussion on the essentials of podcast intros.

Crafting an Impactful Podcast Intro

A compelling podcast introduction should not only introduce your podcast and its purpose but also entice both new and existing listeners. Effective introductions often include a teaser of forthcoming content to captivate the audience's interest. Incorporating on-brand music or sound effects enhances the overall appeal, while a clear call to action (CTA) encourages listener engagement.

For instance, the immensely popular podcast "How I Built This with Guy Raz," recorded using Riverside, exemplifies an exemplary podcast intro. With millions of monthly listeners, this podcast excels in all key aspects of a successful intro:

  1. Justification for Listening: The episode seamlessly transitions from a sponsorship message to a teaser of the guest's interview, immediately showcasing the episode's value through a captivating story snippet.

  2. Personal Connection: Introducing the podcast's premise and episode theme hooks the audience while setting the tone for an engaging listening experience.

  3. Establishing Credibility: By providing a brief overview of the podcast and the episode's guest, the host demonstrates expertise and adds further incentive for continued listening.

  4. Setting the Mood: The choice of music complements the show's personality, enhancing the narrative's impact and creating a memorable experience for listeners.

  5. Conciseness: Despite the podcast's lengthy episodes, the introduction remains succinct, maintaining audience engagement within a brief timeframe.

  6. Effective CTA: Guy Raz encourages listeners to support the podcast by purchasing his book, seamlessly integrating a call to action without detracting from the episode's flow.

Crafting Your Podcast Intro

When scripting your podcast intro, adhere to these fundamental principles:

  1. Clearly state the podcast's name and purpose.
  2. Provide compelling reasons for listeners to tune in.
  3. Introduce the host and any guests, establishing credibility and fostering audience connection.

Ultimately, your podcast intro serves as the gateway to your content, shaping listeners' initial impressions and influencing their decision to stay engaged. By adhering to best practices and infusing your unique brand personality, you can create a captivating introduction that captivates and retains your audience.

Perplexity.ai a competitor to Chat GPT - get source data for results with this new a.i. tool30 Mar 202400:09:25

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Perplexity.ai a competitor to Chat GPT - get source data for results with this new a.i. tool

Are you using A.I. in your podcast - I learned about Perplexity.ai in our recent weekly How To Podcast Community Meetup (you should join us!) What I love about Perplexity.ai is that it sources the results when you use it (unlike Chat GPT) This allows you to see where it is pulling the information from in your search and go deeper on your own and to credit sources for your audience.

I asked Perplexity.ai this question and this was the result given:

Here is a concise answer to the question "four things a new podcaster needs to know before starting a podcast":

1 - Define your "what" and "why" - Clearly identify the topic and purpose of your podcast from the beginning. This will help guide all your other decisions.

2 - Understand the time commitment - Creating and maintaining a quality podcast takes significant time for planning, recording, editing, and publishing. Be realistic about the time required.

3 - Establish a consistent publishing schedule - Commit to releasing new episodes on a regular basis, whether weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. This helps build a loyal listener base.

4 - Invest in quality equipment - Using professional-grade microphones and editing tools will greatly improve your podcast's audio quality and production value.

The key is to thoroughly plan and prepare before launching your podcast, rather than rushing into it. Taking the time upfront to define your goals, manage your time, create a schedule, and use the right equipment will set you up for long-term success.

E227 - Mastering Concise Content Creation - Podcasting Tips for Engaging Audiences25 Mar 202400:23:39

Episode 227 - Mastering Concise Content Creation - Podcasting Tips for Engaging Audiences

In the world of podcasting, brevity is key. As the saying goes, "If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written a Shorter Letter." This sentiment has been echoed by great minds throughout history, from Locke to Franklin and Thoreau to Cicero, highlighting the importance of concise content creation.

Mastering the art of concise communication is transformative for both creators and listeners. It's not just about being brief; it's about being focused, accurate, and mindful of your audience. Whether you're crafting an episode, a promotional snippet, or a message to your community, concise content can make all the difference in engaging your audience effectively.

Here are some strategies to help you craft concise content that resonates with your listeners:

  • Get to the Point: aim to capture your listeners' attention with a few carefully chosen words. Short, impactful statements stick with your audience and leave a lasting impression
  • Clear Communication: By distilling your ideas into their clearest form, you reduce the risk of misunderstandings and keep your audience engaged from start to finish.
  • Respect Your Audience's Time: Recognize that your listeners have limited time and attention. By delivering concise content, you show respect for their busy lives and increase the likelihood that they'll tune in regularly.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Crafting concise content may take more time and effort initially, but with practice, you'll become more adept at conveying your message succinctly without sacrificing depth or quality.

Remember, being concise is not about sacrificing substance; it's about delivering your message in the most impactful way possible. By embracing concision in your podcasting journey, you'll captivate your audience and leave them eager for more.

E226 - Book Review NPR's Podcast Start Up Guide - What this book will do for your podcast22 Mar 202400:15:11

Episode 226 - Book Review NPR's Podcast Start Up Guide - What this book will do for your podcast

My thoughts on this podcast book! I listened to the audio version on Audible and then purchased the book, it was that good - a little leaning toward podcasting with a "team" behind you, so keep that in mind. As solo podcasters we do it all, but this book can help and be an ongoing resource as you move forward into podcasting greatness!

From NPR comes the definitive guide to podcasting—featuring step-by-step advice on how to find a unique topic, tell the best stories, and engage the most listeners, as well as the secrets that will take your pod to the next level.
Whoever you are, whatever you love, there’s a podcast audience waiting for you, and in today’s booming audio storytelling landscape, it’s never been easier to share your voice with the world. But while the barrier to entry for podcast production is relatively low (just the cost of a mic and a laptop), the learning curve is steep—and quality matters. That’s where NPR comes in.

In NPR’s Podcast Start Up Guide, Glen Weldon draws on NPR’s extensive educational materials and army of talent—from recognizable hosts, such as Guy Raz (How I Built This), Gene Demby (Code Switch), Linda Holmes (Pop Culture Happy Hour), and Yowei Shaw (Invisibilia), to indispensable behind-the-scenes players, such as producers, engineers, and editors—to guide aspiring podcasters through the conception, creation, and launch of a podcast.

Part master class, part candid informational interview with the best in the business, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to make their dream of starting a podcast a reality.

Episode 224 - How to Start a New Podcast - Hospice Buddy Cafe - Life Conversations over Coffee with Guest CO-HOST - Jamie Haberman

Jamie Haberman - Creator of Hospice Buddy, Author, & Girl Power Alliance AmbassadorAfter graduating high school at the age of 17, I began my career in the healthcare industry. I have always enjoyed taking care of people, and I was drawn to the critically and terminally ill population.Over the years, I have learned a lot from my colleagues and patients, and I’ve met amazing people who have poured into me and mentored me to become the woman I am today. I became a leader in every position I’ve held and have mentored and trained many nurses, nursing assistants, students, patients, caregivers, and families.

Throughout my career, every position I’ve held was an opportunity to advance my knowledge and my skills so I could provide exceptional, competent, compassionate care and lead others to do the same. Leadership is something that has come natural to me and I love educating and supporting others

In February 2023, I asked God to take the lead to bring me on a new journey and to use me how he needed me. That’s when Hospice Buddy was born! This journey has led me to meet some very inspirational women from all walks of life, all over the world and has given me the opportunity to be part of the Dream to Rise Anthology book, alongside many other amazing authors who share how they have overcome life’s obstacles and rose above the challenges.

It has also introduced me to a powerful organization that I am so thankful for and proud to be a part of, Girl Power Alliance. Girl Power Alliance is a premier global community of Christ centered resources for personal and professional development. It aligns with ambitious women excited about pursuing their God-sized dreams, mentoring others, sharing their gifts, and creating Kingdom impact. Leading, inspiring, and supporting people is a big part of who I am!If you want more information or want to join a powerful community of women collaborating and growing together, I would LOVE to have you on my team and help you reach YOUR God-sized Dreams!

E221 - Google Podcasts Closing Down, Where to Send Your Listeners and rss2ytm11 Mar 202400:18:02

Episode 221 - Google Podcasts Closing Down, Where to Send Your Listeners and rss2ytm

Google announced that it is shutting down Google Podcasts in 2024 to transition podcast listening to its new YouTube Music app. However, many users don't want to use YouTube Music for podcasts, especially Android users who like the experience of having a separate podcast-listening app.

Thankfully, there are some good alternatives. If you're on Android, try Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, or AntennaPod. If you have an iPhone, we recommend Overcast, Pocket Casts, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify.

Below, we’ve curated recommendations from Reddit, our team, and other communities for the best Stitcher podcast app replacements.

  1. Pocket Casts

  2. AntennaPod

  3. Podcast Addict

  1. Overcast

  2. Pocket Casts

  3. Apple Podcasts

If you’re using the YouTube Music™ app, you can listen to all your favourite RSS podcasts: even if they’ve not added their show to YouTube.

Listening in this way means your favourite podcasters get download numbers via their podcast host, and continue being able to earn revenue from ads.

To add a podcast, you need to know the RSS feed. Here’s how to find it for any show:

E505 - How to Use Zoom to Record Your Podcast, Save Money on Paid Services and Get Amazing Audio19 Nov 202500:14:20

Episode 505 - How to Use Zoom to Record, Save Money on Paid Services and Get Amazing Audio - Podcasting Tips

There are many online recording platforms that would love to grab your money on a monthly basis to record your solo or guest podcast recording time. Zoom has had a bad rap for poor audio quality, that it is not a podcasting first experience - a lot of gurus will direct you away from zoom (probably because they have an affilate link to get you to use)

What if you used zoom differently - I use zoom as a backup recording not my main recording. When I have a guest on my show I open audacity (free program) in the background and hit record as my guest joins me via zoom. Audacity is recording my microphone directly into the computer - no wifi drop outs to worry about. If you were to ask your guest to do the very same on their end, recording their audio via their microphone into their computer you end up with 2 separate recordings, one from your end and one from their end, shared via a free Google Drive link that you can assemble after the interview is over in Audacity.

Zoom therefore becomes a backup recording, providing you the opportunity to see your guest on screen during the recording which helps with visual cues, interaction and a better recording experience.

So I will encourage you to use zoom where others won't

Record locally and separately and use zoom as a backup

There you go! That's it! If you want to practice with someone, use my calendar link on my website and we can use, wait for it... Zoom and I can walk you thru all of this!

International Women's Day 2024 - There’s a Desire for More Women-hosted Podcasts08 Mar 202400:12:02

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - International Women's Day 2024

There’s a Desire for More Women-hosted Shows

Some think that because women make up nearly half of the listenership, it’s pointless to craft content catering to one gender over the other. However, audience data says that is NOT TRUE! There is a great need and desire for more stories that include specific female perspectives. Plus, we know from experience that when you focus in on an audience, you’ll have a better time creating content that actually adds value to your listeners’ lives.

Female listeners:

  • Crave podcasts with more female stories and perspectives.
  • Want to hear unfiltered conversations that aren’t found anywhere else.
  • Are on the hunt for more representation from women of colour.

Oh, and over half of female listeners said they would listen to more podcasts if they were female-hosted. About 90% of monthly female podcast listeners already have at least one show on their roster that is female hosted or produced. Here’s a glimpse at what else each demographic currently listen to — Just a little something-something for your brand to think of while you’re finetuning your concept

Episode 289 - CO-HOST - Robbie Samuels - Tips for Rebranding Your Show, Building A Winning Team and Repurposing Past Content

Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur
Connector ~ Builder ~ Expert
Strategist ~ Coach ~ Speaker

Award-winning author of three books, recognized as a networking expert by NPR, Forbes, Amazon, Lifehacker, Harvard Business Review, and Inc., and as an expert in virtual event design by JDC Events.

As a business growth strategist, I coach entrepreneurial women in their 50s and beyond (and a few good men) who are ready to grow their impact and income through new revenue streams by helping them grow their audience BEFORE launching a program or service.

As an event design consultant and executive Zoom producer, I partner with speakers and in-house event teams to design inclusive, engaging, and transformative event experiences, whether in-person, virtual, or hybrid. I train speakers and the team, and handle all the virtual tech. My goal is to help you lower your stress. I've been producing events in one form or another since I was in college in the 90s and providing business growth strategy advice for nearly as long.

These skills combine to create a book launch strategy coach who coaches entrepreneurs to build a launch team of 150+ likely prospects and referral partners, get 50+ Amazon reviews, and host a virtual book launch party that creates a pipeline for their next offer. Conversations with prospects lead to new revenue, which is a measure of success you can take to the bank!

When the pandemic shuttered events I swiftly reinvented myself from networking expert to industry expert in the field of virtual event design. I then built a multi six-figure business based on all-new revenue streams. I share my entrepreneurial journey on my About page.

All that I've learned and experienced makes me the person you'll want to work with regardless of the service I'm providing. Speaking of which, check out the ways we can work together. https://robbiesamuels.com/hubpodcast/https://robbiesamuels.com

E219 - The Right Zoom Settings to Use to Make Zoom a Great Option for Non-Techy Guests06 Mar 202400:24:52

Episode 219 - The Right Zoom Settings to Use to Make Zoom a Great Option for Non-Techy Guests

Despite what you might hear in the podcasting space, many podcasters use Zoom to record their remote podcast interviews, despite the app's default settings compress audio and tend to lessen its quality.

Here are ten steps to make your Zoom recordings settings to give you a higher-quality result!

Download and setup Zoom

Zoom has apps for Macs, PCs, Apple iPhone, and Android.

To download the Zoom app, go to Zoom.us, create an account and click Download.

Zoom's free version is perfect for most podcasters unless you plan on multi-person podcast recordings longer than 40 minutes.

Setup microphone and headphones

To get a quality audio recording, we suggest you invest in a USB microphone and a wired pair of headphones or earbuds.

To select your mic as the input, click the gear icon to open Settings. Click the Audio tab and select your mic from the pop-up menu. You should see your mic listed as an option.

Adjust settings for best audio

Zoom compresses your audio which reduces the audio quality of the file. These audio settings can help make it better.

Open Zoom and click the gear icon on the top right of the window to open Settings.

Under the Audio tab, click:

  • Select Low under Suppress background noise
  • Select show option to enable Original Sound
  • Select High-fidelity music mode
  • Under Recording, select Record a separate audio file of each participant.

Optimize your recording environment

Make sure you pick a quiet place to record where you won't be disturbed.

Follow best recording practices and remember to:

  • check your internet connection
  • double-check that your microphone is setup
  • ensure your computer is plugged in or fully charged

Invite guests to the recording

To invite guests to your meeting, click New Meeting and select the arrow by the Participants icon at the bottom.

Click Invite to generate an invite link and a meeting passcode.

Copy the invite link and Zoom meeting passcode into a text or email to send to your guests or cohost.

Click the Participants button to see when your guests join the call.

Your guest does not have to download the app to accept a call. They can simply click the link and open it within their browser.

Run pre-flight check

Turn on Original Sound & click record

Then press the Record.

Don't worry if you don't start right away; you can always trim up the intro in post-production.

Your Zoom recording will automatically download when you hit End Meeting.

Import files into editing software

Once the call ends, you'll get a folder with separate audio and video files.

If you have a paid account and record to the cloud, you'll also get a file with complete transcriptions of your meeting.

You can drop your M4a file directly into recording software like AudacityGarageBand, or the audio editor of your choice.

It's time to Publish your episode on your podcast host

While it isn't perfect, we think Zoom is the one of the best video conferencing option.

It's a simple layout, most people know how to use it, and your guest doesn't have to download a thing.

Alternatives to Zoom?

You can record a video podcast using remote recording tools like:

Facebook and Instagram are down - I can't reach my podcast community - you need a website06 Mar 202400:11:43

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Facebook and Instagram are down, again - I can't reach my community - you need a website

Are you getting tired of social media platforms dropping the ball, you can't sign-in to your Facebook, or Instagram - to all those podcast gurus that tell you to build your community on a social platform - one question - how are you feeling now?!

Facebook and Instagram are down yet again causing content creators, communities and interaction with a content creator's audience to grind to a halt - why are we building our entire world on any given social platform?

Facebook, Instagram, and Threads are coming back online following an outage lasting about two hours. The three Meta-owned platforms stopped working for many users starting around 10AM ET. Some users experienced issues logging in to their Meta Quest headsets, too.

Facebook logged users out of their accounts, while Instagram users couldn’t refresh their feeds, and Threads displayed a message saying, “Sorry, something went wrong. Try again.” Reports on Downdetector rapidly spiked for all three platforms, while network tracker NetBlocks noted the issue’s global impact. WhatsApp appeared to be unaffected and kept working.

Meta acknowledged the issue on its status page with a message timestamped 10:17AM ET, reading, “We are aware of an issue impacting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” As of 12:07PM ET, the status page said Meta is “recovering from an earlier outage impacting Facebook Login, and services are in the process of being restored.”

Get your own domain site and build a world not dependant on if a social media platform rises or falls - they owe you nothing as a user - build your content and community somewhere that you own the keys to!

If you need help in doing so - hit me up on my website (not my socials - cause, who knows these days - right?)

Leap Year Episode - An Extra Day in Our Calendar and Thoughts Around Bonus Podcast Content29 Feb 202400:16:49

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Leap Year Episode - An Extra Day in Our Calendar and Thoughts Around Bonus Content

Without leap day, our calendar would be off by about 24 days every century, or every 100 years!

The first leap year was introduced in 46 BCE by Julius Caesar of Rome.

People born on a Leap Day are sometimes called leaplings.

More than 4 million people around the world are leaplings.

On non-leap years, some leaplings choose to celebrate their birthdays a day early on February 28, while others choose to celebrate a day later on March 1.

There is an international club for leaplings! The Honor Society of Leap Year Babies has over 10,000 members worldwide.

Some cultures that use a lunar calendar – a calendar that is based on the moon’s movement - add a whole leap month every three years.

The Summer Olympic Games are held every four years on leap years.

There are 525,600 minutes in a typical calendar year. On leap years, there are 527,040 minutes. What will you do with the extra 1,440 minutes this leap year?

E214 - Foundations of Podcast Success - Navigating Quality Content and Patience23 Feb 202400:29:38

Episode 214 - Foundations of Podcast Success - Navigating Quality Content & Patience

Podcasting Foundations: Building on Two Essential Pillars

Before delving into our top promotional strategies, let’s pause to evaluate the bedrock of our podcasting endeavor. We'll start by examining the two fundamental pillars of successful podcasting: quality content and patience. It's crucial to ensure that what we're currently producing merits promotion and to maintain realistic expectations regarding the timeline for achieving success.

Quality Content:

Marketing a subpar product is futile. No amount of investment, creative marketing tactics, or desperate attempts will breathe life into a lackluster podcast. Thus, before embarking on the journey of podcast marketing, it's imperative to ensure that the content is of commendable quality.

What defines quality content? It must embody the following attributes:

  1. Valuable: Each episode should offer something beneficial to listeners, whether imparting new knowledge or skills, providing entertainment, or satisfying curiosity.
  2. Unique: Your podcast's perspective should contribute something fresh to the discourse. Assess your distinctiveness by comparing against others in your niche and refining differentiating factors.
  3. Engaging: Your podcast must capture and retain the audience's interest. If current listeners aren't consistently engaged, prioritize enhancing the content. Study similar podcasts' formats, content, and structure, considering ways to incorporate and improve upon their features.

The most effective long-term strategy for podcast promotion is rooted in providing genuine value. While gimmicks and shortcuts may yield short-term gains, they lack sustainability. Rather than chasing fleeting marketing trends, focus on cultivating value through authentic relationships and high-quality content.

Patience:

Having established a foundation of quality content, shift your focus to the second essential pillar: patience. Just as Rome wasn't built in a day, growing a podcast audience takes time.

It's essential to remember that many hosts produce content for several months before witnessing significant increases in listenership. This means persistently promoting episodes, even if initial engagement is minimal. Don't be disheartened; podcast marketing is a long-term endeavor.

Trust in the fact that promoting a podcast is a gradual process, and audience growth hinges on consistently delivering compelling content over time.

E212 - Why People Tune Out of Your Podcasts and How to Keep Them Listening19 Feb 202400:21:36

Episode 212 - Why People Tune Out of Your Podcasts and How to Keep Them Listening

Why People Tune Out of Your Podcasts and How to Keep Them Listening

In the realm of podcasting, capturing and retaining audience attention is a vital endeavor. However, it's not uncommon for hosts to wonder why their listenership might dwindle over time. Fortunately, the solution may lie in a relatively simple fix. Here are some actionable tips to enhance your podcasting game and ensure that your audience remains engaged.

The Importance of Audio Quality:

Picture this: You're eagerly tuning in to a new podcast episode, only to be greeted by muffled voices, distracting background noises, or erratic volume levels. It's hardly an enjoyable experience, is it? Quality audio isn't just a nicety in today's competitive landscape—it's a necessity. It ensures that your message is conveyed clearly and crisply, holding your audience's attention from the first minute to the last.

Conveying Professionalism:

Top-notch audio isn't merely about delivering a pleasant listening experience; it also signifies professionalism and dedication to your craft. By presenting your content with pristine sound quality, you demonstrate a commitment to excellence and a respect for your audience's time. This professionalism fosters trust and credibility, key ingredients for building a devoted following.

Shaping Your Brand Image:

Your podcast's audio quality serves as a reflection of your brand identity. A polished and professional sound sets you apart from the competition, leaving a lasting impression on your listeners. It not only enhances your brand's reputation but also opens doors to potential collaborations and sponsorships, further solidifying your position in the market.

The Role of an Audio Editor:

Enter the audio editor—a crucial ally in your quest for podcasting excellence. These professionals possess the expertise and technical prowess needed to elevate your audio to the next level. By enlisting their services, you can focus on crafting compelling content while leaving the intricacies of audio editing in capable hands.

Benefits of Hiring an Audio Editor:

Expertise: Audio editing is a specialized skill that requires precision and finesse. By hiring an audio editor, you tap into their knowledge and experience, ensuring that your podcast sounds its best.

Time Efficiency: Editing audio can be a time-consuming endeavor, particularly for those unfamiliar with the process. Outsourcing this task to a professional allows you to allocate your time more efficiently, focusing on content creation and audience engagement.

Consistency: An audio editor ensures consistency across episodes, maintaining a uniform level of quality that reinforces your brand identity and enhances the overall listening experience for your audience.

In summary, prioritizing audio quality and enlisting the expertise of an audio editor are essential steps for any podcaster striving to make a mark in a crowded market. By investing in these areas, you can captivate your audience and keep them coming back for more.

Episode 209 - Understanding Analytics, What Stats Mean, and What Stat You Should Focus on To Grow Your Show in 2024

We take a look under the hood at the topic of Analytics and Stats - what stat should you focus on this year?

We talk about downloading your Geographic Location list of your listenership and how you can upload this entire list into Google Maps - pinning all these listeners on a global map so that you can witness your total global domination! What a fun exercise - here is a YouTube link on how to do this in Google Maps

https://youtu.be/XN_VuNJXsTQ?si=4JphitOuRkf39bae

How long your listeners actual stick around for each of your episodes is more important than a 5 star rating for your show - I know this might not sit well with all of you, but a complete listen by your audience for every episode is a better signal to each of the players that there is value in your content - and, a 5 star rating can be purchased - check your email! You will see this often as you continue podcasting! A 5 star rating can be gamed and purchased and it is more of a vanity metric really, no, c'mon, really!

Thanks for listening (to the entire episode!)

Spotify For Podcasters Joins With Riverside.fm and Removes Some Native Features08 Feb 202400:09:58

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Spotify For Podcasters Joins With Riverside.fm and Removes Some Native Features

Podcasting has evolved quite a bit since its early days. As a format, it is increasingly becoming more visual and interactive, with more people around the world creating, listening, and engaging with the medium than ever before.

And while the core vision of Spotify for Podcasters has remained — to make podcasting so brilliantly simple that anyone, anywhere, can share their voice with the world — like podcasting itself, we’ve expanded our purpose over time. Today we are focused on helping you reach larger, more global audiences and giving you the tools to develop meaningful, authentic connections with those fans.

To that end, we have a couple of important updates to share as they relate to some of our features on Spotify for Podcasters.

First, we are excited to share that we are deepening our partnership with Riverside to provide a native, best-in-class creation experience right inside Spotify for Podcasters. Riverside is an excellent platform that offers powerful, AI-driven recording and editing tools used by creators of all sizes. We first launched our partnership in 2022, and since then, we have seen top creators all around the world leverage their advanced tools to enhance their podcast production. Riverside offers a podcast creation feature set similar to what exists in Spotify for Podcasters today, with the meaningful addition of new video and AI tools to help creators take their work even further.

With our new integration — which launches today — you can record and edit your audio and video podcasts with Riverside right inside the Spotify for Podcasters web product. You can bring in guests for remote interviews, make precise transcript-based edits to the recording, and use their comprehensive suite of AI tools to further clean up and enhance your content before publishing seamlessly through Spotify for Podcasters. Here’s what it looks like:

https://youtu.be/bnnxq3EmUZc

Alongside the rollout of this integration and to better optimize the needs of creators today, we are refocusing our attention — and resources — from some of our legacy tooling to the next generation of podcast innovations. As part of that shift, we are discontinuing our web and mobile native creation tools, including recording and editing tools as well as our “Music + Talk” format (an experimental feature that allowed podcasters to include full licensed music tracks in their podcast episodes on Spotify), beginning this June.

As alwaysyou can upload finished audio and video podcasts to Spotify for Podcasters for distribution, management, and monetization, and all of your existing published episodes will remain published and unchanged. For more information, we encourage you to check out our help center here.

We’re continually listening, learning, and iterating—all with the aim of making a greater impact on you and your show. Whether you’re an established podcaster or just starting out, we’re focused on building the platform you need to find success. Keep an eye out for more tools and integrations from us that make it easier for you to be discovered, connect with your biggest fans, and make a living off your craft.

E207 - Foster enduring intimacy that captivates and retains an audience07 Feb 202400:24:43

Episode 207 - Foster enduring intimacy that captivates and retains an audience

Fostering enduring intimacy that captivates and retains an audience is paramount. Here are a few guiding principles I'd like to impart:

  1. Authenticity: Strive to be genuine. Avoid contrived attempts to win over listeners. Authenticity resonates deeply and invites engagement. It's the cornerstone of connection, although not the sole rule to prioritize.

  2. Preparation: While spontaneity can inject freshness, thorough preparation is essential. Respect your audience's investment by delivering your best. Carefully plan your narrative arcs, questions, and wording to ensure coherence and depth.

  3. Embrace Discovery: Invite your audience into your thought process. Engage them by revealing your journey, allowing for unexpected turns and insights. Balance preparation with flexibility to foster genuine exploration together.

  4. Enhance Yourself: Be true to yourself, but elevate your presentation. When the recording starts, shed the rules and simply shine. Your podcast persona should be a refined, more compelling version of yourself—sharp, witty, and engaging.

  5. Edit Ruthlessly: Editing is paramount. It refines your content, ensuring it feels natural and cohesive. Trim distractions, refine jokes, and eliminate verbal tics. Editing isn't deceitful; it's a service to your audience, sharpening your podcast's unique identity.

In summary, embark on your podcasting journey with confidence. Strive for brilliance, warmth, and humor while holding yourself to high standards. Enjoy the process, and your audience will too.

E206 - How To Build a Membership Program, AI Tools, SpeakPipe and Buy Me A Coffee with Guest CO-HOST - Paloma Bartschi05 Feb 202400:42:57

Episode 206 - How To Build a Membership Program, AI Tools, SpeakPipe and Buy Me A Coffee with Guest CO-HOST - Paloma Bartschi

Born in the year of the horse Paloma felt drawn to these great creatures from an early age. At the age of five, she took her first riding lesson. She looks back now to over 40 years of riding experience of which she was blessed to share 21 years with her Islandic Horse companion Ljomi.

The animals have always been her friends and until her teens they were connected by a very special bond. As she grew older, however, she lost part of that connection like most of us do through the distractions of life. For awhile she didn’t know how to get it back.

Her professional career was taking her in a completely different direction from her natural gifts.

Then in the summer of 1998 she had a key experience which led her back to the animals and nature. That was when a horse talked to her.

Paloma started studying to become an animal communicator and did not stop there. She studied different ways of interacting with nature and learned from ancient wisdom and how our ancestors were connected with animals, plants and all of creation. During the past 14 years Paloma has talked to thousands of animals and has helped hundreds of people have a better connection to their animal companions.

Today she is exclusively committed to spreading the animals’ messages, teaching animal communication, giving individual consultations of animal communication and also doing life energy consultations. She is happy and grateful to be able to share information with people to help them create a continuous joyful and harmonious bond with their animal companions and nature.

Is it Time To Breakup With Your Obsession Over Your Podcast Stats - The NoStats 90 Challenge04 Feb 202400:10:37

The Daily Dave - Podcasting Tips - Is it Time To Breakup With Your Obsession Over Your Stats - The NoStats 90 Challenge

Download numbers, likes, reshares, and followers are useful numbers to track, but focusing on them too much can leave us distracted, frustrated, and eventually burned out. That’s because we’re focusing on stuff we can’t control, instead of stuff we can.

The 90-Day No-Stats Challenge is a fun way to see what can happen when you put your energy into making stuff people love, instead of hitting Refresh on that analytics page.

Here’s how it works.

  1. Sign up to the challenge
  2. Pick a charity to support
  3. Ask your friends to sponsor you to abstain from checking your stats!
  4. Track your progress on a wall calendar or a streaks tracking app
  5. Every time you take a peek at your stats, restart your streak from 0 (this will probably only happen in the first week or so)

E287 - How Active Listening Could Negatively Impact Your Podcast Interviews - Leave Room For Your Guest12 Aug 202400:30:57

Episode 287 - How Active Listening Could Negatively Impact Your Podcast Interviews - Leave Room For Your Guest

Active listening techniques commonly used in everyday conversations don't always translate well to podcast interviews for several reasons:

Audio distractions: Constant verbal affirmations like "uh-huh" or "yeah" can be distracting for listeners and may interfere with the guest's audio.

Guest discomfort: Frequent interruptions or interjections may make guests feel uncomfortable or disrupt their train of thought.

Unnatural flow: Overuse of verbal cues can make the conversation feel forced or unnatural, potentially impacting the quality of the interview.

Use non-verbal cues: If you can see your guest, use visual cues like nodding, smiling, or maintaining eye contact to show engagement without interrupting the audio.

Practice silent active listening: Focus intently on what the guest is saying without feeling the need to verbally respond. This allows you to pick up on nuances and formulate thoughtful follow-up questions.

Ask clarifying questions: Instead of constant affirmations, use well-timed clarifying questions to dive deeper into topics and show you're engaged. For example:

Create a comfortable environment: Ensure your recording space is welcoming and not cramped. Pay attention to lighting and provide amenities like water or coffee to help guests feel at ease.

Conduct a pre-interview: This helps build rapport with the guest, creates an outline for the actual interview, and informs them of what to expect, reducing anxiety.

Embrace silence: Don't be afraid of brief pauses. They can give guests time to gather their thoughts and often lead to more interesting responses.

Be prepared but flexible: Research your guest thoroughly, but be willing to deviate from your planned questions if the conversation takes an interesting turn.

Encourage authenticity: Let guests know they don't need to perform or be overly formal. Authentic, natural conversations often yield the best content.

Show you're on the same team: Help guests understand that you want them to look good and that you're not trying to trick or embarrass them.

Allow for mistakes: Remind guests that the show isn't live and that they can always pause and restart an answer if needed.

To be a better podcast host and create a better interview experience, consider the following approaches:By implementing these strategies, you can create a more comfortable environment for your guests, maintain better audio quality for your listeners, and conduct more engaging and insightful interviews. ___ Meet with Dave for a free consult to help you with your podcast https://calendly.com/truemediasolutions/free-podcast-consult-for-how-to-podcast-listeners ___ https://howtopodcast.ca/

E205 - Solo Podcasting , Navigating Loneliness, Mental Health for Solo Podcasters02 Feb 202400:26:11

Episode 205 - Solo Podcasting , Navigating Loneliness, Mental Health for Solo Podcasters

  1. Acknowledging the Solo Podcaster's Unique Mental Health Challenges:

    • Isolation and Loneliness: Solo podcasters often spend hours recording, editing, and promoting episodes alone, which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.
    • Pressure to Perform: Without co-hosts or a team to share responsibilities, solo podcasters may feel the weight of the entire production process, leading to burnout and stress.
    • Imposter Syndrome: Being the sole voice of a podcast can exacerbate imposter syndrome, as solo hosts may constantly doubt their abilities or feel inadequate compared to others in the industry.
  2. Strategies for Maintaining Mental Wellness:

    • Build a Support Network: Actively seek out communities of fellow podcasters or join online forums where you can connect with others who understand the unique challenges of solo podcasting. Having a support network can provide validation, encouragement, and practical advice.
    • Schedule Breaks and Boundaries: Set clear boundaries around your podcasting schedule to prevent burnout. Incorporate regular breaks during recording and editing sessions, and prioritize self-care activities outside of podcasting to recharge your mental batteries.
    • Practice Self-Compassion: Combat imposter syndrome by practicing self-compassion and acknowledging your accomplishments. Remind yourself that it's normal to feel uncertain or anxious at times, and focus on the value you provide to your audience rather than comparing yourself to others.
  3. Fostering Sustainable Podcasting Practices:

    • Diversify Your Content: Inject variety into your podcast by incorporating guest interviews, listener Q&A sessions, or collaborative episodes with other creators. Not only does this break up the monotony of solo recording, but it also expands your network and brings fresh perspectives to your audience.
    • Invest in Personal Growth: Dedicate time to honing your podcasting skills through learning opportunities such as workshops, courses, or mentorship programs. Investing in your personal growth not only improves the quality of your content but also boosts your confidence as a solo podcaster.
    • Regularly Evaluate and Adjust: Periodically assess your podcasting process and mental well-being. Pay attention to signs of burnout or declining mental health, and be willing to adjust your approach as needed. Remember that prioritizing your mental wellness ultimately leads to a more sustainable and fulfilling podcasting journey.

Summary Practical Takeaway:

As a solo podcaster navigating the complexities of mental health, remember that prioritizing your well-being is integral to the longevity and authenticity of your podcast. Cultivate a support network, implement strategies for maintaining mental wellness, and foster sustainable podcasting practices to ensure that your solo journey resonates with authenticity and purpose. By taking care of your mind, you not only enhance your own podcasting experience but also create content that genuinely connects with your audience.
