Adrienne Nolan-Smith: Patient Advocacy in a Broken System

Adrienne Nolan-Smith received her BA from Johns Hopkins University, her MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University, and then spent three years working in hospitals helping to build programs for folks suffering from chronic disease. She became a board-certified patient advocate with a focus on holistic health and healing and went on to found WellBe, where she now puts all that knowledge, passion, and advocacy to work for people struggling to heal from complex, chronic mystery illnesses. In fact that’s how Adrienne and I met, back in 2020, when she reached out to me on behalf of several of her clients who were looking for a doctor with an integrative, functional medicine background. She is also the host of the GetWellBe Podcast and YouTube Show and shares her research with her community through articles, newsletters, and social media.

This week I am delighted that my friend Mira Rubin has returned to the Healing Grove podcast.

Trained in NLP, hypnosis and applied kinesiology, Mira Rubin is a transformational coach working with change makers and visionaries to shape a world that works. Over the course of many years and thousands of client sessions, Mira has developed and refined her powerfully transformative Core Connection Process, a modality that results in profound, rapid and lasting change.

After a lifetime in search of meaning, an epiphany in November of 2017 led Mira to commit to exploring ways to heal our planet and our relationship to it. She started the Sustainability Now podcast with her business partner, Scott Bille to educate, showcase life-affirming technologies and paradigms, provide connection across siloed disciplines and inspire practical action.

All of Mira’s work is about connection—to our authentic selves, each other and the world. And about taking the reins in our role as creators of our lived experience.

Both educator, and artist, Mira spent the 18 years prior to Sustainability Now teaching design and development of interactive, e-Learning, print and web content at her training center, Mira Images, Inc. Hannes Viljoen: Healing Ourselves Heals Our Team | The Healing Grove Podcast

Hannes Viljoen was a young father when the unimaginable struck. His beautiful firstborn suffered a stroke that left one side of her body completely paralyzed. As he and his wife Jana were grappling to make sense of this, their second son was born with Down Syndrome and such an extreme lack of muscular tone that he was functionally blind and unable to suckle. Just as they were beginning to find their way with the first two, a third child was born, suffering injuries in the birth canal which over time led to many developmental delays, including symptoms of autism.

It is hard for me to imagine the degree of loss and grief that would accompany such a series of catastrophes. In this powerful episode, you will hear how Hannes and Jana moved through and beyond their trauma in order to "fight for our children's lives." They have been on a mission to recover all three ever since, and with some amazing results. In addition to hearing where their kids are now, you will also hear about the non-profit Hannes and Jana started to support families of children with special needs, on each and every limb of their tree.

Given that she has used her voice to perform on stages all over the world, it might be hard to believe that Monifa was once a shy and anxious child. Anita Kopacz: Reclaiming Pleasure | The Healing Grove Podcast

Anita Kopacz calls herself a "pleasure alchemist," because her passion is helping people reclaim their innate ability to experience and enjoy pleasure after trauma. She is also an award-winning writer of two books, Finding Your Way and the recently published Shallow Waters. She received her Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies at UC Berkeley, her MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, and is a certified Tantric coach. I can personally attest to her power as a coach, intuitive, and healer...not to mention her loving, compassionate, playful spirit, which I have been blessed to experience firsthand since early childhood.

Anita is also an activist. She was inspired to create the Zero F’s Given campaign because she is a thriving survivor of sexual abuse. She has utilized numerous modes of healing to reclaim her power, the strongest of which continues to be communing with circles of women.

When I first bumped into Dr. Brent Davis, DC, at a conference for Bioregulatory Medicine a few years back, I knew I had encountered a unique and important human. In this episode, we return to the subject of trauma, and in particular, how trauma can get stored in the body...for years.

My dear friend Lori Haring is a physical therapist, a pelvic floor specialist, and the mother of five. She has advanced training in visceral and neural mobilization, as well as craniosacral and myofascial release. In this touching account, Lori details the story of how she lost her first love in a tragic incident. Her own journey has been informed by this tragic loss in an ongoing and cyclical way, and the tools she has come to master in her career have been instrumental in allowing her to finally release this trauma from her body. In our conversation she shares some of the most powerful tools with us.

Lori has such an incredible tale to tell: I know you will find it very moving and inspiring, as well as informative.

This talk that I did with Lori was recorded in 2020, and since then many twists and turns have come her way and Lori would like to update everyone with where she is today, and how those curveballs have shaped her own healing journey and her work with others dealing with chronic pain and movement disorders. Matthew and Carol Newell are the Founders and Directors of The Family Hope Center, an organization near and dear to my heart. When I made the tough decision in 2014 to put my dreams for a community wellness center on hold to work as their medical director, it was because it was clear that they were doing something truly unique, and uniquely effective, in the world of brain health and recovery. I just knew I had to be a part of it.

Brains-not-working-optimally are all around us. One in every four children struggles with some type of neurological disorder--whether it's autism, dyslexia, anxiety, OCD, low tone, ADHD, cerebral palsy, or something else. Nearly one in six adults will suffer from neurological symptoms in their lifetime, too: consider not only Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, stroke, and multiple sclerosis, but also all of those "senior moments," not to mention the ubiquitous brain fog that we've all experienced from time to time.
