the Coaching Studio with Guest David Franklin, MCC

Season 3 · Episode 57

jeudi 4 avril 2024Duration 01:03:01

In this episode, host Lyssa deHart interviews guest David Franklin, MCC with the International Coaching Federation, executive leadership and personal coach with over 25 years of experience. David holds a master's degree in leadership and organizational development and is passionate about mentoring other coaches. He originally hails from New York but has lived in the Pacific Northwest for more than 26 years. Beyond coaching, David is a classical guitarist, heavy metal enthusiast, outdoor lover, avid traveler, and a self-proclaimed bagel and pizza snob. He is also married to a personal chef and is the father of an aspiring rock guitarist and songwriter.

The conversation delves into David's journey to becoming a coach, starting with his non-traditional education and personal growth workshops in New York. He shares how these experiences led him to realize his desire to help others be their best selves and eventually transition into coaching. David also discusses the importance of coaches doing their own work to be fully present and effective with their clients.

Lyssa and David explore the differences between coaching and therapy, with David emphasizing coaching as an opportunity for transformation and growth, rather than focusing on healing trauma. He also highlights the importance of self-reflection in coaching, both for the coach and the client, and the value of feedback in the coaching process.

The conversation also delves into the art of delivering feedback in mentor coaching, the significance of behaviorally specific language, and the importance of being non-attached and non-judgmental as a coach. David shares his perspective on the role of a coach in increasing awareness and helping clients see their blind spots. I hope you enjoy the show!

the Coaching Studio with guest Michael Bungay Stanier

Season 3 · Episode 44

jeudi 5 octobre 2023Duration 57:33

On this episode of the Coaching Studio

In this episode of the Coaching Studio, Lyssa interviews renowned author, coach, and speaker Michael Bungay Stanier. The conversation navigates the intricacies of power dynamics, the biological instinct to retain power, and the ‘advice monster’ we sometimes find difficult to let go of. Drawing insights from relationship experts, they emphasized the significance of active relationship management in both personal and professional settings. Michael underscored the critical role of open communication, genuine feedback, and the concept of “fierce love.” Discussing Michael’s new book, How to Work with (Almost) Anyone, they touched upon the importance of feeling genuinely heard and seen, the power of silence, and the value of organizational culture. And the key attributes of a Best Possible Relationship.

3 key attributes of a Best Possible Relationship:
For any relationship to have a chance of success there must be three things present:

  1. Safe – Remove the Fear. Psychological safety, as described by Professor Amy Edmondson, where people feel safe and wholly accepted at work.
  2. Vital – Amplify Bravery. Being psychologically braver. Feeling enlivened by working on the hard stuff.
  3. Repairable – Fix the Cracks. Working relationships will go off the rails eventually. Some self-heal, but rarely to the state they were before. Nevertheless, good relationships work to fix the damage.

Their conversation, interspersed with book recommendations and personal anecdotes, culminated in discussions on defining success, the role of community in personal growth, and surrounding yourself with people who will support you to bring something positive into the world.

Michael's Bio:
Michael Bungay Stanier is at the forefront of shaping how organizations around the world make being coach-like an essential leadership competency. His book The Coaching Habit “unweirds coaching.” It is the best-selling coaching book of this century, with over a million copies sold and more than ten thousand five-star reviews on Amazon. In 2019, he was named the #1 thought leader in coaching. Michael was the first Canadian Coach of the Year, has been named a Global Coaching Guru since 2014, and was a Rhodes Scholar. His most recent book, How to Work with (Almost) Anyone, shows how to build the Best Possible Relationship with the key people at work.

Michael founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that had helped hundreds of organizations transform from advice-driven to curiosity-led. (Learn more at BoxOfCrayons.com.)

Michael is a compelling speaker and facilitator, combining practicality, humor, and an unprecedented degree of engagement with the audience. He’s spoken on stages and screens around the world in front of crowds ranging from ten to ten thousand. His TEDx talk has been watched by a million and a half people. (Learn more at MBS.works.)

En route to today—and these are essential parts of his origin story—Michael knocked himself unconscious as a laborer by hitting himself in the head with a shovel, mastered stagecraft at law school by appearing in a skit called Synchronized Nude Male Modelling, and his first paid piece of writing was a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter … and called The Male Delivery.

the Coaching Studio with Guest Ebony Smith, MCC

Season 2 · Episode 43

vendredi 10 mars 2023Duration 58:08

With great pleasure, in the final show of Season 2, I would like to introduce Ebony Smith, MCC. This conversation explores with thoughtfulness the idea of Self-Care for Coaches. Many coaches know all the things they need to tell their clients to help them with self-care, yet don't consistently practice the habits that serve them as coaches, leaders, and business owners. Join us as we relax into this idea of Leaders and Coaches starting with themselves, when it comes to care.

Ebony Smith, founder of Ebenum Equation, is an International Coach Federation (ICF) Master Certified Coach (MCC). She is a leadership development expert with a passion for creating forward-thinking leaders. After 20 years of risk management experience in the Fortune 100 (Sunoco, BP, and World Fuel services), her full-spectrum-lens view of leadership has empowered her to help individuals hone their goals and reach their full potential.

Bringing an innovative, straightforward approach, she pushes individuals to leave their “Subject Matter Expert” mindset behind and become relationship-oriented leaders that drive their organizations into the future.

Ebony is passionate about cooking, self-care, and exploring cultures.

We help high-performing teams hack themselves to unlock the power of incremental self-awareness to increase resilience while achieving a flow state. For example, we provide longitudinal care to an opioid crisis team. Our work has reduced stress, increased collaboration, and actively reduced the factors that lead to crisis clinician burnout.

Leadership is a skill and a mindset that needs space to incubate and grow.
