lundi 2 septembre 2024Duration 01:49:53

We have Rockford, IL's own The Bitter Ends and we're wrapping up 199 episodes of the podcast (before starting fresh on 200) with truly one of the greatest concepts to grace this podcast, Frances the Mute! From the beautiful, but tragic story, to the inspiration that created it, to the scorching riffs and prog trumpets (to the decoded version of the album that combines the single Frances the Mute overtop the album Frances the Mute). If you're a concept fan, this is an epic concept.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Season 4 · Episode 63

lundi 19 août 2024Duration 02:05:28

I had a really awesome description for this episode but Spotify's new uploader deleted everything. I don't know exactly what I said but it was moving and concise. You have to believe me...

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Pt. 1 (4th World War)

Season 4 · Episode 54

lundi 22 avril 2024Duration 01:29:09

Today we're talking about none other than the First Lady of Neo Soul. If you've ever wondered how hip hop of the 2010s got so groovy, look no further than New Amerykah. With her eclectic style and taste in music, she brings us everything from 70s funk to 90s R&B and everything in-between. After a several year hiatus due to writer's block, Erykah, with the help of some of hip-hops best producers, she came back strong with this record and remains somewhere near the top of mount hip-hop.

Flyover State TV's "The Island" - 2000s Indie Rock (w/ Haptic GG)

Season 3 · Episode 5

lundi 6 septembre 2021Duration 01:54:21

We're doing something a little different today. Since we had to shuffle some things around, we couldn't record an episode so we decided to show you what our livestream “The Island” was like in it's place. Every other week, Nate, Reis, and Brad go back to the island to listen to a new location based playlist with a new genre every week. This episode is a real nostalgia-fest, as Brad tries to create the perfect Indie playlist for close personal friend Haptic GG (Dustin Booher from the Hellogoodbye ep) using 2000s Indie Rock as a template. It's not always exactly Indie... and it's not always rock... but Indie was a pretty loose term in the 2000s and Brad & Dustin reveled in it when it was burgeoning on myspace pages across the nation. Here's what Brad cooked up:

  1. The Killers – Sam's Town
  2. Panic! at the Disco – London Beckoned Songs About Money Written by Machines
  3. Cage the Elephant – Aberdeen
  4. So Long Forgotten – A River Flows in the Desert
  5. mewithoutYou – In a Market Dimly Lit
  6. Hellogoodbye – Homewrecker
  7. The Extraordinaires – Seven Seas
  8. Cloud Cult – The Will of a Volcano
  9. Bright Eyes – Land Locked Blues
  10. Matt & Kim – Northeast
  11. Tegan and Sara
  12. Streetlight Manifesto – A Better Place, A Better Time
  13. Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Taylor Swift - Fearless (w/ Kayla Dunlap)

Season 3 · Episode 3

lundi 23 août 2021Duration 02:13:39

The great SWIFT OFF is upon us! We teased it on our Pet Sounds episode, but now we are really getting INTO IT. We're going to dive deep into her career from 2008 with the original release of "Fearless" to 2021 with her own "Taylor's Version" of the album (which she painstakingly re-recorded start to finish), and we have a HEATED debate about the soul of modern country music! Are you team Taylor or team Twang???... I mean... really it's less of a debate... more of a discussion... yeah, really just a discussion about music. Today Brad, Jon, and Jake are joined by Kayla Dunlap, who was a teen girl when this album about the life of a teen girl came out!

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Season 3 · Episode 2

lundi 16 août 2021Duration 01:42:16

We're crossing another epic album off the list today with Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions". By the time this released in 1973, Wonder had already completed 15 albums (16 if you include his greatest hits) for the Tamia label on Motown Records. Coming off the heels of "Talking Book", he was already a completely realized artistic force and he had no intention of stopping any time soon. With "Innervisions" and the albums that succeeded it, he showed the world what this blind Motown kid was capable of, including playing most of the instruments for the recordings and exploring his artistic capabilities to the fullest. This is just one of several episodes of his greatest work that we will discuss more next time (whenever that may be).

Just the regular crew today y'all! Please excuse the endless technical issues in this episode. If you would like to help in that area, please go to https://patreon.com/flyoverstatepark !!!

SEASON 3 PREMIERE - Digimon: the Movie Soundtrack

Season 3 · Episode 1

lundi 9 août 2021Duration 01:53:43

It's our 3rd installment in killer children's movie soundtracks and of course we have back our soundtrack aficionados, Griffin and Alex Woodchicken to break down another time capsule of a soundtrack, designed perfectly for a child growing up in the 90s. That's right, it's possibly the greatest(?) children's soundtrack ever conceived by corporate America: the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack. Where the Transformers: the Movie soundtrack captured the essence of 80s power/hair metal and the Jetsons: the Movie soundtrack captured 80s electronic/pop, the Digimon: the Movie soundtrack captured a real amalgamation of popular 90s genres, from rap to surf rock to ska to rap/pop/rock(?), all interlaced with sick scratches on the turntables. It somehow has everything that the 90s was at the turn of the millennium without anything feeling out of place. It's like the Reese's of children's soundtracks. Just to name a few flavors, we have Barenaked Ladies, Smashmouth, and Fatboy Slim (and a truly epic “Digi-Rap”) on the front half of the album, and then Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Less Than Jake on the back half. Not to mention the 90s reimagining of 80s pop hit “Kids In America” that was hastily made to market directly to a young American audience (thematically having little to nothing to do with the movie, but can't lie, song was dope). Get ready to hear us at our absolute nerdiest, as Brad, Jon, Jake, Griff, and Alex discuss Digimon in more depth than anyone asked.

Carole King - Tapestry (w/ Jordan Duffy from Earwolf!)

Season 2 · Episode 54

mardi 20 juillet 2021Duration 02:09:21

It's not often that our guest walks such a similar path as the artist that we're discussing. The artist is Carole King, a studio musician and songwriter that wrote for legendary singers like Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell—before solidifying a singer/songwriter career of her own with her album “Tapestry”. The guest we have on is Jordan Duffy, an engineer at the podcast network Earwolf, home of Comedy Bang Bang and How Did This Get Made, and former home of Hollywood Handbook. Jordan has worked behind the scenes of some of your favorite podcasts, such as “Yo is this Racist?”, “Best Friends with Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata”, and “The Deep Dive” (with June Diane Raphael and Jessica Saint Clair)--and now she has her eyes set on proving to the world what her BA in vocal performance means. She's got octaves for days, more hours in a studio than you could count, and she's a singer/songwriter in her own right, so she's basically our generation's Carole King.

Make sure to stay tuned to the end of the episode to get an exclusive look at what Jordan is capable of with short demo of her song “No Big Deal” and check out her "Powerful Ladies Podcast" (link in the description).

The Who - Quadrophenia pt 2 (w/ Darin Wilson)

Season 2 · Episode 53

lundi 12 juillet 2021Duration 01:08:24

In the second part of Jimmy's Journey to find out who he is and what he lives for, he seeks the comfort of Brighton, where all of his amazing experiences with the mods took place. After finding that Sting aka Ace Face, one of the coolest mods, has begun working at the hotel they once trashed just a few years prior. Jimmy is feeling more and more like what they did meant nothing and gets closer and closer to the truth that he's been playing a role that doesn't quite fit him. After stealing Ace Face's moped, Jimmy takes on last journey out past the shore and has a spiritual epiphany with one of the greatest Who songs around, "Reign O'er Me".

Today, we're continuing on with our guest Darin Wilson from BUCK Neck-ed and guest of the Songs We Didn't Write Podcast!

The Who - Quadrophenia pt 1 (w/ Darin Wilson)

Season 2 · Episode 52

lundi 5 juillet 2021Duration 01:53:52

We are winding down to the end of season two with just four episodes left until we start with a fresh new season after 80 episodes of the podcast! We did a lot of double albums in season two, so to start off our countdown to the end, we're talking about the first disc of The Who's "Quadrophenia", considered by many to be the quintessential Who album. Last time we discussed The Who, we were talking about Tommy. Today, we're here to talk about Jimmy. In this first half of his journey, Jimmy is a boy trying to find his place, growing up in post-war Britain. He considered himself quite the mod, going as far as to take part in group fights with the rockers, and losing his office job to pursue a more bohemian lifestyle. However, Jimmy has developed a poor attitude and becomes disillusioned to the mods, as he sees them taking jobs to pay bills to be insincere to the mod values. By the end of disc one, he has isolated himself from friends and sought out the only refuge that he knows... the sea.

Today Brad, Jon, Dave, and Jake are joined by Brad's good friend Darin Wilson, musician, deacon of sorts, and recurring guest on the Songs We Didn't Write podcast
