734: From Google’s Moonshot to GM’s Vehicle-to-Everything | Lessons in Innovation from Ty Jagerson
Season 14 · Episode 734
jeudi 29 août 2024 • Duration 01:19:43
How does an idea go from concept to lab, from lab to field, and finally attract massive capital investment? What can a decade of business building behind the iron curtain in post-cold-war Eastern Europe teach you?
Ty Jagerson has spent his over 25 years executive career launching and growing businesses at Xerox (PARC), SolFocus, Google X, and most recently General Motors. His work at Google X, on Tapestry-the Moonshot Factory project, focused on overcoming the data bottlenecks that hinder the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar and electric vehicles into the grid. Long before he spun novel technology out of PARC (you might have heard of SolFocus?) he was learning the ropes in Ukraine and Russia exporting space tech, in the 90s! Throughout his career Jagerson’s work reflects a relentless pursuit of integrating renewable energy into the grid, all while navigating the high-stakes, competitive landscape that he likens to the "Hunger Games" of the energy industry.
You’ll discover:
- The long arc of innovation and how it often takes (7 to 14 years!) for technology to really become commercially viable.
- Insights into how corporate environments may not always be the best incubators for innovation but can serve as safe havens for developing ideas from external sources.
- The importance of industry "scar tissue" and how past failures contribute to future successes.
- Insights from Ty’s work at Google X and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) at GM on integrating DERs.
Listen in to learn how one iconic clean energy pioneer, Ty Jagerson, navigated the challenges of integrating DERs with the grid, offering critical lessons for entrepreneurs striving to innovate and succeed in the energy sector.

725: Fewer holes, No Leaks. Solar Racking Reimagined, with Pegasus CEO Kai Stephan
Season 14 · Episode 725
jeudi 1 août 2024 • Duration 01:05:52
What is the unsung hero of solar installations?
Racking… It's a "set it and forget it" component for contractors, as its reliability is essential to avoid costly service calls, making that critical product choice a “near-religious experience” for most installers.
Kai Stephan, the founder and CEO of Pegasus Solar, has developed one of the fastest growing solar mounting software and hardware solution providers here in the United States on the vision of simplifying the product and giving homeowners and installers more peace of mind.
His entrepreneurial journey was not all smooth sailing. After leaving a kush Utility job at SoCal Edison to found Pegasus, Kai encountered more than a few challenges. What do you do when your launch-customer files for bankruptcy? Pivot. What do you do when regulations change the rules of engagement? Reinvent yourself. Pegasus is not exactly the business Kai thought he’d leave his corporate nest to create, but it’s proved a worthy competitor in a very competitive landscape for more than a decade, and seems to only be getting better.
Despite the hurdles, Kai has remained committed to his vision to make rooftop solar easy with a product that’s “better by design”. I’d encourage you to watch the video version of this one if you can, as I had an AHA Moment myself when Kai finally explained to me the genius of the product design. Here’s a significant stat for you - 5 Million units shipped over the past decade with ZERO product failures and…ZERO Roof Leaks!
There are numerous lessons to be learned along the way:
- The design features that make Pegasus solar installations fast, easy and more reliable
- Kai's approach to navigating financial setbacks
- A novel approach to water-intrusion testing that includes a kiteboard
- How software automation accelerates solar panel layouts
- Pegasus’ creative process behind new product development
Hit play to gain insights into Kai’s entrepreneurial journey and how Pegasus’ hardware and software solutions are improving residential solar installation.

In a world dominated by technology and data, we often lose sight that people are at the heart of the matter. Building connections & partnerships in communities is essential to any project's success. Building (and Telling) compelling narratives helps us connect with our target audience on a deeper level and significantly enhances the impact of marketing strategies. However, capturing and presenting these stories in campaigns effectively is challenging, especially given the rapid shifts in media, the difficulties in sourcing stories across geographical and corporate boundaries, and the sheer volume of content we are capable of generating these days.
So I’ve assembled an esteemed panel if practitioners: Scarlett Chepke from SOLV Energy, Pallavi Singla from Nextracker, and Tom Weirich from EDP Renewables, all distinguished leaders in marketing and communication. They offer insight into harmonizing technology with creative thought to make a lasting connection with your ideal customer and audience. Their approaches range from specific social media policies and AI-powered analysis to glean audience insights, to motivating employees to share their experiences, using software to tag and manage content effectively, and tips on managing the story-gathering process at scale.
This dialogue provides key details on how, despite the implementation of AI and software tools, the heart of good marketing is a return to the story. By understand its mechanics, we are able to craft communication, internally & externally, that aids in accelerating this energy transition and enrolling more agents of change to stand alongside us.
That’s the power of Storytelling. Are you using it well?

635: RE+’23 Recap: Industry Pulse with Nate Jovanelly
Season 12 · Episode 635
mardi 26 septembre 2023 • Duration 01:07:06
I finally got around to a complete recap and takeaways from this year’s RE+ main event, a milestone in the clean energy industry that saw an astounding attendance of over 40,000 people. Joining me is industry expert Nate Jovanelly, who for the past 2 years has hosted the Industry Pulse segment at our PowerUp Live Podcast Stage, and hosts his own podcast called Limitless (you really should already be subscribed to this one!). Nate is also co-founder of Sunraise Capital and one of my go-to resources for all things related to residential solar & financing. But today’s convo is not about either of those, directly. Rather, Nate & I give our take on this year’s RE+, takeaways, thoughts, superlatives, and more.
This year’s RE+ in Las Vegas truly highlighted the outstanding growth in the industry, and we kick things off with a recurring theme in many conversations on the show floor: workforce development. We also talk about how the industry is “crossing the chasm”, highlighting how prosumers are playing a crucial role in shifting market dynamics. And we dig into the growing trend of strategic partnerships among pioneering companies (manufacturers chiefly) that is shaping a new era of collaboration and innovation.
But, this year’s RE+ event was not without challenges, so we provide our take on what could be improved, along with what turned out to be a quite popular segment of our daily show, the SWAG Roundup! Regardless if you were at RE+ this year or not, its sheer size likely guarantees that there was plenty you missed, so tune into this recap episode, and if you find yourself wanting to hear more of what took place, make sure to visit suncast.live to watch all the shows from our PowerUp Live Podcast Stage at RE+, or queue up the replays we published here on the pod of the daily morning shows and roundups!

634: Simplifying On-Site Energy for Businesses; VECKTA may be the first ‘platform’ to do it!
Season 12 · Episode 634
jeudi 21 septembre 2023 • Duration 01:30:57
While businesses grapple with skyrocketing energy costs, increasingly frequent power outages, and mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions, clean energy & energy efficiency providers struggle with how to find & convert them as customers. The complexity of on-stie energy challenges often leaves businesses feeling overwhelmed with options for transitioning to cleaner, more resilient, on-site energy solutions, also known as distributed energy resources. Adding to this complexity are the 'soft costs' associated with developing these solutions, which include consulting, engineering, sales, and procurement, which can account for a staggering 50% of project costs. The energy market also suffers from a pervasive information asymmetry. Buyers often find themselves at a loss for who to trust, and suppliers struggle for project traction due to customer indecision.
Gareth Evans, the CEO and founder of VECKTA, designed a company specifically to tackle these challenges head-on. Their unique platform helps businesses navigate the energy transition by developing tailored strategies, prioritizing projects, designing optimal solutions, and providing access to vetted suppliers via a streamlined marketplace. In our conversation, Evans offers an in-depth look into how VECKTA managed to overcome the hurdles of achieving product-market fit, which included building their platform in isolation during a global pandemic. Evans also shares insights about managing the growing pains of a start-up: from recruiting and maintaining an effective team, to raising capital, to managing the transition from intrapreneur to CEO.
Evans offers a unique perspective on the transformation that businesses must undergo to meet increasing environmental pressures and transition to more resilient energy solutions. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone interested in how businesses can navigate the complexities of the energy transition and provides valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of leading a startup in a rapidly evolving industry. VECKTA may have just unlocked the doorway to scaling the C&I sector for what Evans prefers to call “On-site Energy”, which we have commonly referred to as Distributed Energy, Solar, Energy Effiiency, etc. Give it a listen and let us know what you think with a note on Linkedin or X!

633: You NO LONGER Work in the Solar Industry, here’s why, with Jigar Shah of the DOE (RE+ Rewind)
Season 12 · Episode 633
mardi 19 septembre 2023 • Duration 23:34
The solar energy sector is witnessing momentous identify shifts. I’d call it an identity crisis, but we’re not that far yet. Jigar Shah, however, might be so bold. As homeowners transition from merely generating energy to storing and redistributing it to the grid, there's a growing sense that our traditional understanding of "solar" as the industry in which we participate might be too narrow. But what does this mean for installers, utilities, and everyday consumers?
Jigar Shah, the director of the Department of Energy's Loan Programs Office, offers an exciting (if provocative) glimpse into the future we shall inherit. With his hand in funneling billions to pioneering energy projects that transcend the boundaries of solar, encompassing batteries, electric vehicles, and more, Shah has taken on the mantle of Chief Story Architect, so to speak, in conveying the captivating concept of the “virtual power plant”. Shah elaborates on how this next evolution of the grid will place homeowners at the heart of vital grid services. Yet, as we explore these innovations, Shah also casts a spotlight on a pressing concern: how do we ensure equitable access to these advancements, particularly for marginalized communities facing steep energy expenses?
Join us for a riveting discussion, recorded live from the RE+ 2023 Tradeshow floor, that promises to expand horizons, challenge preconceptions, and reveal the latent potential within our homes and communities. Shah challenges us to embark on a journey into a more holistic, equitable, and resilient energy future, where every individual has a role to play, and no company may any longer call itself a “solar” company…we’re in the Virtual Power Plant business now, y’all!
This and many other iconic conversations were captured LIVE at the PowerUp Live Podcast Stage in Las Vegas the week of Sept 11-14, 2023. You can watch them all at www.suncast.live !
