EPISODE #153: Understanding ADHD in Girls with Psychologist Stephen Hinshaw
4/24/2024
SUMMARYWhen people think of ADHD, they often picture the wiggly 6-year-old who struggles to keep his hands to himself and loves making his classmates laugh. We don’t often picture the little girl with a busy brain and loves to talk. For years, girls were overlooked in the research for ADHD. This resulted in a misunderstanding of their need for support. Getting these amazing girls the right treatment as early as possible is paramount for their success. In this episode, we are interviewing Stephen Hinshaw, an expert on ADHD in girls. He shares a summary of a twenty-five-year research study and how to support these amazing girls!
MEET STEPHEN HINSHAWStephen Hinshaw is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at UC Berkeley and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. His research focuses on ADHD (especially in girls and women), self-harm, clinical interventions, and stigma reduction. He has authored over 420 articles and chapters, plus 12 books. His memoir, Another Kind of Madness, was Best Book in Memoir/Autobiography from American BookFest (2018). Among national/international awards: James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award (Association for Psychological Science, 2016); Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award (American Psychological Association, 2020); Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health (National Academy of Medicine, 2020); and induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2021). His extensive media coverage includes the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CBS Evening News, Today Show, and more.

EPISODE #149: Understanding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and ADHD with Therapist Natasha Daniels
3/27/2024
SUMMARYIn our culture, we hear the term “OCD” thrown around a lot. “I’m so OCD about…” While this isn’t intended for harm, it does foster confusion about what it really means to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s far more nuanced than the common idea of constant hand-washing or organization. OCD can be common in kids with ADHD, so in today’s episode, we talk with OCD therapist Natasha Daniels to hear from her 20+ years of experience with treating OCD. From understanding the diagnosis to getting the right treatment, Natasha shares what every parent needs to know to support their kids.
Natasha Daniels is an anxiety and OCD therapist with over two decades of experience. She combines both her clinical expertise with her lived experience, raising her own three kids with anxiety and OCD. She is the author of several books, including Anxiety Sucks: A Teen Survival Guide, How to Parent Your Anxious Toddler, Social Skills Activities for Kids, It’s Brave to Be Kind, and The Grief Rock. She is the creator of the website AT Parenting Survival, as well as the host of the show AT Parenting Survival Podcast and the YouTube channel Ask the Child Therapist. Her work has been featured in various places, including Huffington Post, Scary Mommy, PsychCentral, The Child Mind Institute, and The Mighty.

3/13/2024
SUMMARYAsking your child to clean their room or do one page of homework shouldn’t launch a battle complete with meltdowns, but often, for kids with ADHD, it does. You’re trying your hardest to breathe and regulate, but inside, you’re thinking, “Why is everything a fight?!” For those of us who grew up in strict, authoritarian homes, this is even more triggering. We feel disrespected by the “defiance” and don’t understand why some tasks cause such a disruption. While it’s incredibly frustrating, you are not alone. This is common in children with ADHD. The truth is that defiance is often a symptom of something deeper for the child. So today, we are going to dig into four possible explanations for why your ADHD child may seem defiant.
MEET OUR TEAMWe are Lori, Mallory, and Katie. Lori and Mallory are child psychologists, and Katie is a speech language pathologist. Most importantly, we are moms, just like you.
