Mind Games with 2x World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist Annie Vernon
Season 1 · Episode 155
mercredi 21 août 2024 • Duration 36:59
Annie Vernon is the daughter of a Cornish farmer who became a double world champion and an Olympic Silver medalist in that toughest of all sports - rowing.
Annie then wrote an award winning book Mind Games - subtitled determination, doubt and lucky socks: an inside his guide to the psychology of elite athletes. You can buy Mind Games from your local independent bookshop or via Bookshop which is an online shop supporting independent book shops if you want to buy the book online.
During the episode Annie shares those mindset insights which the club runners and elite runners who listen to this podcast can apply when they are running, including the traits of determination, confidence, resilience and competitiveness.
It is a fascinating episode as we get a peek into the world of the elite athlete and all that entails in terms of mindset and how that alone can often make the difference between being great and being good.
This is episode 155 of the Running 44@60 podcast and it is also the fifth anniversary of the podcast since we first launched on August 21st 2019

I ran my first, and so far only, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run.
This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it’s called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon.
My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme.
My big running goal remains the Arc of Attrition 50 in January 2025.

Top Running Tips from New Running Coaches
Season 1 · Episode 154
dimanche 11 août 2024 • Duration 10:54
I’ve recently, along with 11 others, passed the England Athletics Coach in Running Fitness Course
This involved an initial weekend in Taunton followed by a couple of Zoom lead sessions before returning to Taunton almost 3 months later for a final assessment.
In between the first and last session we had to work with an athlete on an eight week programme (known as a mesocycle) to help them reach a particular running goal.
So I've handed over this episode to six newly qualified coaches who were on the same course as me to share with you their top tips to help you with your running.
You're going to hear from Drew, Lorna, Tom, Ryan, Anita and Brendan
A big thanks to them for their contribution not just to this episode but to helping you with your running and being great colleagues on the course.
If you enjoy the episode then please do share it with your Running colleagues and it would be great if you left a review

Sub 3 Hour Marathon with Mark Roby
Season 1 · Episode 145
vendredi 26 avril 2024 • Duration 42:09
On this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast I'm talking to Mark Roby about how he went from struggling to walk because of a back injury to a sub 3 hour marathon in less than 3 years.
Mark ran his first London Marathon when he was 23 years old back in 1999 in a time of 4:18
He didn't really run then until he discovered parkrun in 2017 but his running was scuppered in 2021 with a significant back problem which he gradually recovered from and in 2022 he joined a running club for the first time and did his first race in July that year.
That was the start of a journey that less than two years later took him across the line at Brighton in 2:55:51, a time which in 2021 would have felt completely impossible.
So how did he make such a massive improvement at the age of 48?
Mark shares in the podcast episode the way he changed his diet, the way he stuck to a training plan which included regular course sessions some built around yoga and how he used parkrun to measure his speedwork progress.
He also talks how we did a lot of easy 45 to 60 minute runs, essentially because they were not too difficult to fit into his daily working schedule.
Mark also talks about Man Down Cornwall and how they helped him when he wasn't able to run.
Mark offers two tips two be would be Marathon runners:
- Commit properly to a plan and avoid the temptation to skip some sessions
- Work at different paces during your training
If you are planning or have done something interesting, ideally that we haven’t covered in previous episodes, and would like to be a guest on the show please drop me a line to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk

#54: Winning 24 hour races and final Classic Quarter tips with Colin Bathe
Season 1 · Episode 54
mercredi 12 mai 2021 • Duration 31:29
Colin was the inaugural winner in 2019 of an event called 'Bring out your dead' which was a 24-hour event part of the Roseland August Trails (RAT) involving running essentially for the full 24-hour is as you are only allowed to stop for a maximum of 20 minutes at any one point in time and you have to be totally self-sufficient so you couldn't even indulge in the aid station which was part of the 2 1/2 mile out and back route for this 24-hour run.
Colin also shares some final top tips of the classic water including notes on the route, pack weights, the mental state of mind etc
A big thank you to everyone who has supported my fundraising efforts for the Classic Quarter there is still time to make a donation so simply click on this link to do that:

#53: Classic Quarter Training Done - Mindset Begins
Season 1 · Episode 53
mercredi 5 mai 2021 • Duration 26:30
This episode was recorded on May 5th 2021 - 17 days before the Classic Quarter and exactly 27 months and 820 days since I announced I was going to take part - that announcement was on Feb 5th 2019.
In this episode I reflect on the transition from completing the long run training to now focusing on my mindset for the day. I share how I'm breaking the course down into four very uneven quarters and also into 3 mile segments and what I'll be doing during each segment as well as talking about how I'm planning to simply have a big day out.
I also introduce a new idea when this is over called RB@50 which is running begins at 50 and is inspired a little bit by the lonely goats running community and also by the number of people that I've met my kind of age-group out running on their own during my training as well as targeting those people who have got to the stage in life where they words want to return to their youthful activity but without any motivation or inspiration could easily end up simply not doing that and instead buying a bigger TV a bigger sofa and a wider sky sports subscription.
If you think this podcast is a value and worth a tenner towards my fundraising campaign and please click here to make a donation and help me get to a new target of £6000 – and please do leave a review via your podcast app. Thanks very much.

Season 1 · Episode 51
jeudi 22 avril 2021 • Duration 22:36
I recorded this on April 21st 2021 - my first venture onto what is widely regarded as the toughest part of the Classic Quarter course. Lots of short snippets of recording - some are a little bit wind affected and my poles are clanking bit in another but overall I hope it gives you a guide to what you can expect.
