108: Mindset vs. Ability: Where to Put Your Focus for Success

Season 1 · Episode 108

mardi 27 août 2024Duration 28:25

Is mindset more important than natural ability for achieving success? This idea is what I’m chatting about in today’s episode of The Purpose & Profit Club™ Podcast using examples from the Olympics and Neflix’s SPRINT documentary – specifically Noah Lyles’ belief in his inevitable success. Even more, I argue that mindset, rather than just pure athletic ability, is what drives success. I back this up with scientific studies showing how our beliefs and perceptions can actually influence our physical outcomes. When you listen in, you’ll learn the importance of claiming your goals publicly, reframing negative thoughts, and approaching your work with a growth mindset. By the end of the episode, I hope that you will feel encouraged to adopt strategies like journaling, meditation, and joining my coaching program to develop a "mindset ninja" approach to unlock the true potential of you and your nonprofit organization.

Topics:

  • Lessons from 100M gold medalist, Noah Lyles on drawing your line in the sand, clicking into your mindset, and owning your inevitable success
  • Playing with the idea of your nonprofit setting an expansive stretch goal and dicing out the fears that come with this in order to overcome them
  • How your beliefs influence your reality and parsing out the difference between natural physical ability and being able to adopt a ninja mindset
  • After understanding the power of mindset, learning how to apply this to your specific goals for your nonprofit or as a nonprofit executive
  • Choosing fundraising that is filled with ease rather than believing the age old narrative that it has to be hard
  • Remembering that “failure” is not a personal attack on your character and learning lessons that you can take from each campaign

107: Peer-to-Peer Fundraising: Your Path to Winning Big feat. The Kyle Pease Foundation

Season 1 · Episode 107

mardi 20 août 2024Duration 40:32

The Kyle Pease Foundation has been on my radar for a very long time as a Georgia native and as someone who notices when a nonprofit is just doing it right. Because of this, I’m so excited to have Zach Watson, the Operations Manager at the Kyle Pease Foundation with me today on the podcast. The purpose of the Kyle Pease Foundation (KPF) is to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities through sports and beyond. Throughout our conversation, Zach shares the incredible work they do to empower individuals with disabilities through endurance sports, offering opportunities from 5Ks to Ironman Triathlons. Zach also highlights the sense of community and inclusivity the foundation fosters and why this is the core of all of their programming success. This conversation was a powerful testament to the transformative power of sports and community.

Topics:

  • The dynamic between brothers Brent and Kyle Pease as executive directors and co-workers especially as the business has grown nationwide
  • The events that the Kyle Pease foundation is known for and how they’ve introduced more inclusivity to sports, fundraising, and more
  • How Zach’s own lived experience has changed since he’s become The Operations Manager at the Kyle Pease Foundation and become really immersed in the mission
  • More about the foundation’s ambassador program and how they’ve grown it to be the successful peer fundraiser program that it is today
  • Underscoring the importance of partnerships (and the middle person) to connecting your community with your organization
  • The retention plan that the foundation uses in order to ensure continued involvement from athletes, partners, and ambassadors
  • How the foundation is supporting individuals with disabilities after they graduate and what’s coming up as far as events and campaigns
  • Zach’s advice for anyone who is looking to get into the athletic event fundraising space

98: Influential Storytelling: Revolutionize Your Communication with Mike Ganino

Season 1 · Episode 98

mardi 18 juin 2024Duration 41:27

You’re going to love this episode today with Mike Ganino, a public speaking, storytelling, and performance coaching methodology. He is so good at his craft and that shines through throughout the whole episode. There were a couple moments where I was blown away at his ability to take a story and run with it as he related it to the practice of public speaking and/or making the ask. As you listen through this episode, you’ll hear tips on becoming a more effective and confident communicator (even if you’re an introvert). These are skills that you can take with you into the board room for your next directors meeting or as you sit down to ask for the bigger donation from a long-time donor. I can’t wait to hear how you put this into practice!

Topics:

  • One of the biggest misconceptions of public speaking and why it’s not always the best to be the loudest in the room
  • Why introverts actually make great public speakers and the thing that more stories need to be brilliant
  • How to reconnect with your inner self and find your spark again after being told you’re “too much”
  • Reminders to yourself so that you can become a more effective communicator and the power of rehearsal
  • Mike’s advice for those people who feel awkward and uncomfortable with public speaking

8. Become a Better Storyteller by Watching Stand-up Comedy (seriously, this works!)

Season 1 · Episode 8

jeudi 2 février 2023Duration 21:48

Forget reading all the "how-to" books to become a masterful storyteller. In this episode, I'm sharing the homework assignment I gave my students in Easy Emails for Impact.

The homework assignment? Watch 15 minutes of stand-up comedy before our next session.

Here's why there's magic (and a method) you can apply from my favorite comedians:

  • Creating a simple hook to engage your audience immediately
  • A compelling story arc without sounding like a high school 5-paragraph essay
  • Super approachable and relatable, normalizing fails and missteps
  • Masterful editors! Say it with fewer words! (this is a game-changer when you apply it to your own messaging)

Draw inspiration from your favorite comedians because it's a lot more fun to laugh, write with ease, connect with your ideal audience, build trust, and grow your business.

Plus, learn how to transition from a story to an irresistible call-to-action seamlessly!

Season 1 · Episode 6

mercredi 25 janvier 2023Duration 23:00

Learn the power-prompt to get you out of the space of following-the-leader and seeking perfection.

Episode highlights:

  •  Understanding the "chatter" that your brain offers you and how to figure out if it's your "toddler brain" or "higher brain"  (this concept is a gamechanger!!)
  • Why the best innovation comes from doing it your own way
  • How to figure out what you really want -- and go after it!
  • Your marketing strategy isn't one-size-fits-all
  • You do not have to follow the leader - instead, run it through YOUR own filter

Plus, find out:

  • Why I gave up TikTok and the internal business filter I created to figure out what strategies to focus on.
  • The timeframe you should commit to, at minimum, before changing your strategy.

5. Don't Follow the Leader: Part 1

Season 1 · Episode 5

mardi 24 janvier 2023Duration 19:36

I'm taking you back to 3rd grade and the snarky trick Ms. Crowder played on our class and the life lesson that took me many years to learn from it. Find out how following the leader can get you further away from achieving your goal, and keep you stuck from accessing your own expertise and voice.

Episodes Highlights:

  • The shift in learning from the "experts:" I'm giving you MY answers, but I don't know THE answers.
  • Experts are sharing everything they think you need in books and training, but you need to follow you! No one has the all answers.
  • How assimilation can, particularly for women, can keep you from speaking up, doing the hard thing, and stepping into your own thought leadership and authority.
  • How to go against the grain, be vocal, and why it's the key to letting your mission shine

Following the leader results in homogeneous, boring marketing. The same redundant calls-to-action and boring social campaigns. Your audience wants to hear YOUR unique point of view.

When it comes to endless "suggestions" and feedback, take what you need, and leave what you don't!

Plus, hear about why I chose to have a waterbirth with my son, and how I dealt with vast, unhelpful opinions from friends and family, and "experts." When you create your own strategy, unique point of view, or decision, you must trust and believe in yourself first in order to create the support to handle the naysayers.

Thoughts to think, on purpose:

  • The magic is in forging my own path.
  • I get to decide what's best for me in my business.
  • There is not one right next step, only the one I decide is right.

4. How to Stop Making Decisions "By Committee" and Create Self-Confidence First

Season 1 · Episode 4

jeudi 19 janvier 2023Duration 13:38

Find out one of the biggest time-wasters and growth inhibitors in today's episode:

  • My story about how I used to ask for way too many opinions and what I was really searching for
  • Why so many leaders are used to "bouncing ideas" to committees, friends, and mentors -- and why you should stop
  • Why feedback isn't really necessary (and when it is!)
  • Where you're asking for feedback that I don't actually need

Want a shorter, more productive workweek?

  • How this change was one of the biggest drivers to taking my work week from 40 hours to an average of 25 hours per week.
  • The filters and internal systems I had to implement to create change and the discomfort that came up along the way.

Reflect: Am I asking for feedback when I actually don't need feedback?

Thoughts to think on purpose:

  • I approve. I think it's good to go. I trust my process.
  • This is how I become more efficient.
  • I believe in me first.

3. Chasing the "How" and What to Do When You're Stuck & Nothing is Working

Season 1 · Episode 3

jeudi 19 janvier 2023Duration 23:05

On an endless search for the right strategy? Can’t crack the code on growth? This episode is for you! In this episode, I share about when I started my first business in 2007, how built a client list from scratch, and what separates founders that are successful from those who give up.

This episode is perfect for purpose-driven small business owners, nonprofit founders, and consultants.

You'll find out:

  • Why there is churn in mission-driven sectors
  • Why you can have the "perfect" strategy and still avoid taking action
  • How to get out of idle mode and into action-mode
  • How to make the leap to action, even when you're uncomfortable, feel self-doubt, or uncertainty

Highlights:

  1. How to trust your own intuition and stay the course to build a successful business
  2. How to entrust your own success on YOU and not the book, coach, mentor, or course
  3. How to combat the "how" thoughts that come up - reminding yourself that Minimum Viable is the next best step (Listen to Episode 1).

Thoughts to think on purpose:

  • I don't need to know how to get to the finish line, I just need to take the next best step
  • There isn't one way, one strategy
  • You need to sync up your thinking with the strategy -- and believe it's possible to achieve exactly what you want
  • I do know what I need. I trust myself.
  • This is working!
