29:49 - THANK YOU GUNN RUNNERS ON PATREON

Thank you. Truly. Your support is the reason I'm still making music, telling stories, and showing up month after month.

Patreon is how modern, independent musicians survive and thrive. Album Pins and CDs help get me on the road and in front of live audiences, but my day-to-day livelihood—the time it takes to write, record, podcast, film, and share—comes directly from Patrons of the Arts.

As we continue into a new year, Patreon is where everything comes together.

Patrons receive a brand-new song download every month. These are exclusive tracks you won't find anywhere else—works in progress, experiments, and finished songs that come straight from my creative desk to you. You'll also get regular updates when there's news to share, behind-the-scenes blogs, short and long-form videos, and access to a growing archive of bootleg concert recordings and special performances.

You can join for as little as $5 a month. That small commitment adds up to real stability. It buys time to write songs. It funds recording and production. It keeps the creative engine running without chasing algorithms or trends.

And if supporting financially isn't possible right now, that's okay. You can still join Patreon for free and receive regular updates, thoughts, and stories as they happen. Being part of the community matters, whether you're pledging or simply listening along.

Patreon isn't just support—it's collaboration. It's how these songs, podcasts, and ideas exist at all.

If you'd like more details, just email follow@celtfather. I'd love to have you along for the journey this year.

31:37 - COMMENTARY - THANK YOU WHAT YOU DID FOR US

34:55 - Irish Millie "WASTED" from Between Then And Now

42:38 - QUEST & CHORUS of THE GOTHARD SISTERS

The Gothard Sisters are three sisters Greta, Willow and Solana. They are contemporary Celtic folk multi-instrumentalists, composers, performers and songwriters.

Blending Celtic, folk, world, classical and new age musical influences, the Gothard Sisters bring songs to life with violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, bodhran, djembe, whistle and vocal harmonies, creating music that is "vivid, inspirational and captivating." (Tim Carroll, Folk Words Review 2018)

Raised and homeschooled by artists in the Pacific Northwest, USA, the Gothard Sisters grew up immersed in nature, imaginative play and traditional folk and classical music. Their music takes inspiration from folk music traditions around the world, timeless stories, new age and classical records, and nature itself.

Writing and recording near their home in the Pacific Northwest, USA, the band has released 11 albums and performed over 2,000 live shows over the course of their career.

Before we go, a quick reminder: caring about Celtic culture also means caring about the land that shaped it. The songs we love were born from fields, coasts, forests, and villages that depend on a healthy planet.

Climate action doesn't have to be loud or perfect. It starts small. Walk when you can. Choose renewable energy if it's available to you. Support artists, farmers, and local businesses who care about the earth. Reduce waste. Reuse what you can. Leave a place better than you found it.

When we protect the land, we protect the music, the stories, and the generations yet to sing them.

Four Lights and Rebel Songs #312

Episode 312

mardi 3 février 2026Duration 36:23

What do Irish rebel songs and Star Trek have in common? This week on Pub Songs & Stories, we raise a glass to courage, truth, and the songs that refuse to obey. From the Easter Rising of 1916 to a Cardassian interrogation chamber, today's songs ask one dangerous question: Do you trust your own eyes? Music from Kinnfolk, Erin Ruth, Marc Gunn, The Irish Lassies

This is Pub Songs & Stories #312

NEWS

12:39 - UPCOMING SHOWS

The Foggy Dew is an Irish rebel song written to honor people who fought for Ireland's freedom during the Easter Rising of 1916. Instead of praising Irish soldiers who died fighting for England in World War I, the song asks why they were not fighting for their own land instead. It tells of ordinary men and women who stood up against a powerful empire, even when the odds were stacked against them.

That's why it's a rebel song—it's about choosing freedom, courage, and self-respect over obedience. Versions like the one by Erin Ruth keep that spirit alive, reminding us that quiet voices can still challenge injustice and inspire change.

15:09 - Erin Ruth "The Foggy Dew" from Erin Ruth

18:25 - NEW PROTEST SONG INSPIRED BY STAR TREK: NEXT GENERATION

"Chain of Command, Part II" from Star Trek: The Next Generation centers on Captain Picard as a prisoner of the Cardassians. His captor, Gul Madred, uses pain and fear to try to control him. But the real goal is not information. It is obedience. Madred wants Picard to stop trusting his own eyes and accept what the government tells him is true. Again and again, Picard is pushed to say something he knows is false. The episode shows how power can try to rewrite reality—and how courage can be as simple, and as hard, as holding on to the truth.

It echoes George Orwell's 1984, reminding us that the final test of freedom is whether we trust our own eyes—or believe the government when it tells us we are wrong.

21:34 - Marc Gunn "Four Lights" from Four Lights single

27:08 - QUEST & CHORUS of IRISH LASSIES

The Irish Lassies are a 6-piece American Celtic folk band native to New York's Finger Lakes region. The band started when long-time childhood friends decided to take their casual Irish sessions and grow into a professional folk group. In only a few short years, the Irish Lassies have become known as one of the premier Celtic bands in New York State.

Their self-titled album The Irish Lassies is comprised of traditional Irish music with unique Lassies' arrangements. Immigration Stories, an all-original album, aims to take listeners back to 18th and 19th century America with heart-felt true tales of Irish settlers. The Lassies' unique style focuses on powerful ballads using six-part harmonies and soulful songs that will invite you to raise a glass, dance, and sing along with a set list that takes you on a journey from Ireland to America. Slainte!

PUB CHAT

Ken Katen emailed on Patreon: "Good afternoon, Marc - I"ve just upped my Patreon support of your Irish and Celtic Music podcast to $10/month.  I remember bombing around the back roads of Joshua Tree listening to your paen to Joss Wheedon (it got me to give "Firefly" another chance - thank you).

Now I'm [belatedly] listening to your Pride Month episode, and am once again impressed by your fearlessness to wade into an area that you feel is important enough to deserve your attention and representation while remaining unafraid to admit your ignorance (which, as Mark Twain observed, "can be fixed, unlike stupidity, which is permanent") by selecting a great co-host both musically and (sub) culturally.  I wish I could do more, but I'm supporting a raft of podcasts, and some folks in my real life neighborhood businesses who are also struggling right now.

I can't fly anymore thanks to radiation treatment a few years back, but your Celtic Invasion Vacations sound wonderful - perhaps one day I can figure out how to travel "across the pond" by boat and join you to enjoy the touring"

Songs by Rie Sheridan Rose

Episode 210

mardi 7 juillet 2020Duration 35:50

The music of fantasy and Steampunk author, Rie Sheridan Rose is featured today on the Pub Songs Podcast.

WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY

0:18 - SONG: "Elves" from Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits

2:33 - WELCOME

-- Watch the show on YouTube.

I met Rie Sheridan Rose at Excalibur Fantasy Faire. That was the first Renaissance festival I performed at. Rie became a fan of my band Brobdingnagian Bards. But one day, before I got to know her, she handed me lyrics and a cassette out of the blue. She had written a song and asked if I would sing it.

I'll be honest. I was a bit lazy. I didn't want to try to learn her melody.I never really did anything with the cassette. But I loved the lyrics. So I wrote some music for it. Andrew and I started playing the song. It was extremely well-received. Eventually, it was recorded for the Bards' album, Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales.

One day, I asked her to write lyrics for a Firefly soundtrack. Then I asked if she would write some hobbit drinking songs with me. Then came a pirate and dragon Steampunk project I came up with.

Twenty years later, we have over 30 songs that we've written together!

And while I do talk about Rie every now and then during shows and in emails. I don't think I ever did a show dedicated to the songs she and I wrote. Nor have I done a podcast dedicated to our music together.

Back in June, I finally remedied that during Coffee with The Cetlfather. I'm pleased to share that show with you right now.

> What are the top 5 most-famous Irish songs for you?

Kelley Durski:

1.) Kevin Barry (though that may be a Savannah thing)

2.) Molly Malone

3.) Wild Mountain Thyme

4.) Whiskey in a Jar

5.) Black Velvet Band

With honorable mentions to Beer Beer Beer, Fields of Athenry, Green Grows the Laurel, and A Stor mo Chro.

Joshua Ohmer: Most famous has to be Danny Boy, although it's not a favorite of mine. Then I'd say Whiskey in the Jar, Molly Malone... And if we can dip into modern Irish music, I'd say that The Cranberries' Zombie and probably something from U2, like Sunday Bloody Sunday should qualify as particularly famous Irish songs.

Janine Rinker: That's tough. I've only learned a few... Molly Mallone, Paddy Works on the Railway, a verse-ish of Danny Boy. I'd probably go with The Wild Rover and Whiskey in the Jar as the last two. I'd occasionally hear "They Kept the Pig in the Parlor" from my dad's family, but have to say that's an anti-Irish song.

Allan Marcotte: The Wild Colonial Boy, Bold Fenian Men, Whiskey in the Jar, Rising of the Moon and Brennan on the Moor

Matt Hughes: Wild Rover, Black Velvet Band, Whiskey in the Jar, Finnegan's Wake and Molly Malone

Anna Paulson wrote on Twitter: "This is a poem I wrote while I listened to your live show on Facebook.  Thanks for the inspiration."

I asked her if I could share it.

Oh dear harp,
Will you sing for me?
Please sing me a song to set my heart free.

Every time a bard plucks your strings,
Everyone gets up, dances, and sings.
Please, please do that for me.

My hands are clumsy,
My voice is shrill,
But your song still gives me a thrill.

I am no bard,
Music for me is hard.
Yet I'm the only one here to play you.

So please dear harp,
Sing for me,
A song to set any soul free.
