Stout n’ Sour (Sabrina Carpenter and Spanish Marie Brewery)

Season 5 · Episode 105

vendredi 17 octobre 2025Duration 01:58:21

Barry and Abigail discuss Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter and sample PB&J Mixtape: Grape from Xul Beer Company in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Knaus Berry Cinnamon Roll from Spanish Marie Brewery in Miami, Florida.

Abigail first learned of Sabrina Carpenter from seeing her Nonsense outros that she customized for each of her concert locations.

Watch the music video for Feather, and read about how it was tangentially involved in former mayor Eric Adams’ indictment.

Watch the music videos for Taste, Please Please Please, and Espresso.

Abigail presented Circle the Drain by Katy Perry as a counter-example to the more playful breakup vibes of Taste. That led us into a conversation about our respective “Let’s Dance moments”: See Let's Drink (David Bowie and Cultured Collective Brewing), Mind Your Grammer (Andy Grammer and Deadwords Brewing), and, most recently, Adult Beverages (Katy Perry and Urban South Brewery).

Abigail was a little worried that Barry was going to call Bed Chem the Peacock of this album.

Abigail likened the character in Dumb & Poetic to one of her favorite Instagram accounts, @beam_me_up_softboi.

Abigail repeatedly plugged Sabrina Carpenter’s newest album, Man’s Best Friend. Watch the music videos for Manchild and Tears.

vendredi 3 octobre 2025Duration 01:54:00

Barry and Abigail discuss Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman and sample Light Cone, Hypnopompic, and Red Eye from Grimm Artisanal Ales in Brooklyn, New York.

Barry spoke about his memory of encountering a curfew during a period of race riots in Bridgeton, New Jersey, where he grew up, when he was eight years old.

Prior to this episode, Abigail knew Tracy Chapman best from her version of O Holy Night.

Read about Luke Combs’ cover of Fast Car that made Tracy Chapman the first black woman to win Song of the Year at the Country Music Awards in 2023. Watch Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman perform Fast Car together at the 2023 Grammys.

Read about the Maillard reaction.

Barry compared She's Got Her Ticket to Neighborhood #2 (Laika) by Arcade Fire. Listen to our discussion of Arcade Fire: Dees Siblings (Arcade Fire and Dees Brothers Brewery).

In our discussion of Why?, Abigail referenced the Androposphere from Whoah by Midnight Oil. Listen to our discussion of Midnight Oil: Barley and Rain (Midnight Oil and Intracoastal Brewing Co.).

Abigail then entered Why? into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to How Come? from the original off-Broadway cast recording of Children's Letters to God.

Abigail posited that For My Lover may have been a creative retelling of Loving v. Virginia.

Barry and Abigail discuss The Fame by Lady Gaga and sample Shifty Modern Pilsner, Watermelon Girlfriend, Kiwi McSqueezy, and Rainbow Sherbet from Prairie Artisan Ales in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Barry distinctly remembered Lady Gaga’s meat dress.

Watch Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime show performance from 2017.

Take a peek at the marionberry pedigree.

The Fame always reminds Abigail of another Lady Gaga song, Applause.

Barry entered I Like It Rough into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Somebody’s Watching Me by Rockwell.

By the way, Abigail gave a credit to F.O.T.P. Joe Turocey, who pointed out that Waitress in the Sky by The Replacements (reviewed on our episode Bill [The Replacements and Right Proper Brewing]) is similar to Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum.

Abigail then entered Summerboy into the A.H.S.O.S.S.A.M. with a comparison to Heart of Glass by Blondie.

Dorks on Corks on 4-1 (“Weird Al” Yankovic and Schnebly Redland’s Winery)

Season 2 · Episode 28

vendredi 1 avril 2022Duration 01:48:15

Barry and Abigail discuss In 3-D by “Weird Al” Yankovic and sample AvoVino, Carambola Wine, Guava Wine, Passion Fruit, and Lychee Wine from Schnebly Redland’s Winery in Homestead, Florida.

Barry saw “Weird Al” in July 1996 at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood, California during The Bad Hair Tour. Years later, in August 2015, Barry surprised Abigail with tickets to see “Weird Al” at The Broward Center for the Performing Artsduring The Mandatory World Tour.

JP, our wine tour guide from Schnebly, recommended pairing several of the wines with locally-produced smoked fish dip from What Are We Smokin'?

Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo in Beat It by Michael Jackson. Rick Derringer of The McCoys (who produced In 3-D) recreated the guitar solo on Eat It by “Weird Al.”

Don Pardo of Saturday Night Live fame appears on I Lost on Jeopardy, “Weird Al”’s parody of Jeopardy by The Greg Kihn Band.

The Egg Scrambler is a real product advertised by Ron Popeil that was referenced by “Weird Al” in Mr. Popeil. Ron’s sister Lisa Popeil was one of the backup singers in “Weird Al”’s Mr. Popeil!

Up next… KICK by INXS (for real this time)

Jingles (and the "Dorks on Corks" theme song) are by our friend Pete Coe.

Bonus: Friendship Wins (Jack Cornell and Tripping Animals Brewing)

vendredi 25 mars 2022Duration 01:50:22

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Jack Cornell discuss Jack’s album One in Wins and sample Octopus Backyard and Hundreds of Babies from Tripping Animals Brewing Co. in Doral, Florida.

Jack and his friend Terry Anderson have been musical partners for over 40 years and have collectively formed the rhythm section of The Fabulous Knobs, The Woods, and, most recently, Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team (or the O.A.K. Team).

The musical genealogy of the North Carolina music scene is complex, and we do a lot of name dropping in this episode. For a more detailed explanation of the cast of characters we reference, we recommend reading The Fabulous Knobs Wikipedia page or visiting our website to read the extended edition of these show notes.

Jack contributed a cover of You’re So Rude by Faces to Be Good to Yourself, an album featuring original songs and performances by North Carolina artists to benefit musicians battling addiction and depression.

Jack volunteers with the Novick Cardiac Alliance, a charity that provides total cardiac care to children in low- and middle-income countries.

Abigail matriculated Jack into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music by comparing his song The Man to Stop Stop by The Black Keys.

Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe.

Barry thought Room @ The End of the World sounded like Fred Astaire by Jukebox the Ghost, previously reviewed on Racing Due South (Jukebox the Ghost & Due South Brewing Company).

Barry put in another plug for A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs.

Up next… KICK by INXS

Jukebox: Hoptenders (The Pretenders and Chapman’s Brewing Company)

Season 2 · Episode 26

vendredi 4 mars 2022Duration 01:31:24

Barry, Abigail, and guest Todd Sider (Abigail’s uncle and Barry’s brother-in-law) discuss Todd’s Jukebox submission, Pretenders by The Pretenders, and sample Harvester, Undaunted, Dr. Jekyll Low Cal Hazy IPA, and Mr. Hyde High Cal Imperial IPA from Chapman’s Brewing Company in Angola, Indiana.

Abigail's only knowledge of The Pretenders prior to reviewing this album was their Christmas song 2000 Miles.

Other woman-led punk rock bands of this era mentioned were Pat Benatar, Heart, and Blondie.

Try listening to Eminence Front by The Who or Where’s the Orchestra by Billy Joel with only one headphone in!

This album includes a cover of Stop Your Sobbing, originally by The Kinks.

Read more about Saltwater Brewery's Eco Six Pack Rings made from spent hops. You can also buy Beer Mutts dog treats made from spent grain.

Barry put in another plug for A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs.

Up next… Modern Love by Matt Nathanson

Hi (Peter Gabriel and Maui Brewing Co.)

Season 2 · Episode 25

vendredi 18 février 2022Duration 01:28:27

Barry and Abigail discuss So by Peter Gabriel and sample Waimea Red, Pono Life, and POG Hazy IPA from Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii.

Barry’s first exposure to this album was the music video for Sledgehammer.

Abigail’s knowledge of Phil Collins and Genesis comes from the Tarzan soundtrack, which Phil Collins wrote.

Barry incorrectly remembered that Sussudio by Phil Collins was knocked out of the Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot by Sledgehammer; in fact, it was Invisible Touch by Genesis that Sledgehammer replaced.

Mercy Street was dedicated to Anne Sexton and inspired by her poem 45 Mercy Street.

Read more about Stanley Milgram’s experiments, or listen to a very nuanced debunking of the experiment’s cultural narrative by You’re Wrong About, one of Abigail’s favorite podcasts.
