We unpack the term ‘subacromial impingement’ and explore if that is still a relevant diagnosis according to current research. Jared is an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist from the Gold Coast, Australia. He has an interest in the shoulder joint and is currently studying for a PhD in this area.

#22 - The history of core stability and the “stability vs general exercise” debate with Robin Kerr

In this episode Robin gives us a wonderful history of the definitions, research and applications of stability training vs general exercises for people with low back pain. Robin covers the research from the 80’s to present day and how the narrative has moved and changed, sometimes correctly and sometimes incorrectly.

Robin Kerr is an Australian trained physiotherapist with post graduate training in gait lab biomechanics and psychology. Over the last 35 years she has focused on research informed management of running injuries and pelvic floor issues. More recently her focus has shifted to persistent pain management as well as continuing to see elite athletes.

#21 - Exploring physical exercise prescription with Dr. Jane Thornton

In this episode we explore the physical exercise guidelines, barriers, benefits and how we are performing as health professionals with exercise prescription. Dr Jane Thornton discusses the latest research in relation to the current exercise prescription principles, specifically through the WHO guidelines. 

Dr. Thornton is a Clinician Scientist specialising in long-term athlete health, female athlete health, and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, with cross appointments in the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Department of Kinesiology at Western University in London, Canada. She is a Member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) and Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM).

Dr. Thornton represented Canada for over a decade in the sport of elite rowing, becoming both a World Champion (2006) and Olympian (2008), and has been recognised nationally for her contribution to society by sport/volunteer initiatives.

#20 - Knee pain in adolescents with Dr. Sinéad Holden

In this episode we spoke to Dr. Sinéad Holden about the diagnosis, prognosis and management of knee pain in adolescents. She particularly covered Osgood-Schlatters disease or OSD and differential diagnosis from patellofemoral pain. We discussed the role of imaging in diagnosis of OSD and common findings of imaging with OSD as well as factors which may lead to pain later on in adulthood.

Dr. Sinéad Holden is a Senior Researcher and Co-founder of the OptiYouth Group focused on ‘optimising physical health in youth’. Her research investigates adolescent MSK pain, and physical activity related injuries.

She recently completed an Individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of prognostic factors for anterior knee pain in adolescents published in PAIN the journal. She discussed the implications and findings of this recent study which had a total of 1281 participants.

In this episode Ian Gatt discusses why pain lingers in hands and wrists and how to approach these injuries in the clinic. We covered diagnosis, prognosis, imaging and using updated frameworks and narratives to this often overlooked area in physiotherapy.

Ian is the Head of Performance & Lead Physiotherapist for GB Boxing, with 20+ years of experience in a variety of sports. He is an Upper Limb Injury Specialist with the English Institute of Sport, with a keen interest in Hands & Wrists. Further, he provides private consultations on the Upper Limb. Ian has a passion for teaching and delivering regular workshops, webinars, and at conferences on diverse topics linked to Upper Limb sport injuries.
