You’re Not Behind: 4 Steps for Getting Out of Career Stagnation

Season 1 · Episode 313

mardi 27 août 2024Duration 20:02

Episode #313 // We’ve all heard the stories about the people who started entrepreneurial ventures quite late in life, and found success at a mature age. If nothing else, this serves as a reminder that, no matter how many opportunities you think you may have missed, there will always be more in the pipeline… if you’re open to them.

There’s a lot we can learn from those who’ve gone before us, if we choose to pay attention and apply the principles to our own career growth and personal progression.

In this episode, I take a look at the mid-career stagnation problem. I’ve seen it hit many leaders in my time, and many of them haven’t got the faintest notion about how to get out of that rut.

I begin by looking at some examples of people who achieved real success quite late in life. I examine some of the advantages that more mature leaders have, as well as some of the unique anchors that hold them back. And I finish with four areas that you can focus on, in order to break the pattern of stagnation.

Moment #83 When Personal Problems Spill Over Into Work (And How to Handle It)

dimanche 25 août 2024Duration 04:45

Moment #83 // Over the last several years, we’ve seen greater integration of our work and personal lives than ever before… some would even go so far as to say it’s unprecedented.

In the past, it was considered unacceptable to bring personal issues into the workplace. These days, though, we’re encouraged to bring our whole selves to work.

This has made the job of a leader much more complicated, and you need to be able to handle these issues confidently when they arise.

If you want to take a deeper dive into how to handle your people’s personal issues, have a listen to Ep.185: The Mental Health Minefield.

Responding In Pivotal Moments: The principles of mastery

Season 1 · Episode 308

mardi 23 juillet 2024Duration 18:24

Episode #308 // It’s pretty rare that you’re faced with a decision that’s final or irreversible. And when one comes along, it’s normally pretty easy to recognize — you can sense the gravity of the moment, and the potential consequences that lie ahead.

But, as I look back on my experiences, some of the most significant decisions I’ve ever made, in terms of my life direction, didn’t seem to be that big a deal at the time. I made them using a liberal dose of gut feel, not suspecting for a moment how consequential they would ultimately turn out to be.

I recently had occasion to think about one of the most pivotal moments in Emma’s life, which also had a profound effect on mine. For those of you who don’t know, Em is my daughter. She’s also the producer of the No Bullsh!t Leadership podcast, and CEO of our business, Your CEO Mentor.

I was reflecting on the path that led us to where we are now, and it took me back to a brief but pivotal moment which, to tell you the truth, could have gone either way.

This episode is packed with examples, including Em’s story. I hope that it helps you to recognize these unexpected moments when they arrive in your career, and to respond accordingly.

You can never know, at the time, how critical these decisions will be… which is why you have to be prepared for every moment!

How I Keep Learning: My 5 Hot Tips

Season 1 · Episode 263

mardi 12 septembre 2023Duration 20:33

Episode #263 // After speaking to a group of Executive MBA students last week, I had pause to reflect on my career journey, my educational choices, and what I considered to be the determinants of my modest success to date.

If I really distilled the key things that have helped me to grow rapidly over the years, what would they be? I’ve often said that leaders are learners, but you could spend a lot of time these days consuming information, without getting traction: and by traction, I mean gaining the wisdom and insight that would differentiate you as a leader.

Although I wouldn’t recommend to anyone that they try to emulate my career path, by the same token I think I’ve managed to maximize the potential of my learning opportunities over the years.

These learnings made me better, and I guess that’s really the only yardstick you can use—what’s the relative improvement in you. It’s not about anyone else, it’s about taking responsibility for becoming better over time. If you’re a leader, your people’s welfare will depend on it!

In this episode, I give you my top 5 tips for maximizing your learning opportunities, so that your leadership career can thrive.

Moment #33: Overcoming the Need to be Liked

dimanche 10 septembre 2023Duration 03:50

Moment #33 // Why is it so difficult to get over the need to be liked? Because it’s completely ingrained… it's programmed into all of us. It's part of our DNA and it's controlled by our reptilian brain. It's an instinctive response.

But, counterintuitively, to be a competent leader you have to overcome that fundamental evolutionary urge.

Putting Respect Before Popularity requires a huge amount of empathy, which is why it’s so important to have a highly-developed EQ. Isn't it ironic that the road to higher empathy winds its way straight through the mire of conflict, challenge and accountability?

You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.206: It's STILL Respect Before Popularity.

Moment #32: Emotional Resilience in Corporate Chaos

dimanche 3 septembre 2023Duration 03:19

Moment #32 // I went through some incredibly disruptive events during my corporate career - and it's fair to say that some of them pushed me to the edge of my personal capacity.

Despite the personal toll, when I look back I’m so grateful that I was able to experience those situations. I never felt that there was anything I couldn't ultimately handle, and the accelerated learning that I took from each situation really turbocharged my career.

I couldn't have achieved anywhere near what I did if I was leading people in a warm, stable, and comfortable environment.

You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.224: Leading Through Major Upheaval.

Do You REALLY Understand Value? The bedrock of team success

Season 1 · Episode 261

mardi 29 août 2023Duration 19:42

Episode #261 // The central element of the No Bullsh!t Leadership Framework is value. It should be the primary focus of every leader, at every level, in every organization. Value first… that’s it!

Although we automatically think of financial value, value can be created in many different forms. Your imperative, as a leader, is to understand which of the things your people do genuinely create value, and which things simply generate activity for its own sake.

If you can manage to align the work that creates the most value for your company, with the things that benefit your people individually, you will absolutely turbo-charge your team’s performance!

This episode dives into the world of value, outlining the key principles of value delivery, describing what a value-driven culture looks like, and exposing some of the common organizational barriers to value creation.

Moment #31: The Anatomy of High Impact Decisions

dimanche 27 août 2023Duration 03:54

Moment #31 // How comfortable are you when making “high-impact” decisions? You know, the ones that really test you… the ones that scare you... the ones that you know can potentially have serious consequences if you get them wrong.

You don't have to be the CEO of a Fortune 100 company to make high-impact decisions. The founder of any small business has to make decisions every day, many of which can potentially make or break their business.

No matter how big or small the decision, using your experience and judgment to put it into context is vital.

You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.216: High Impact Decisions.
