S12 Ep8: ROSIE MEEK ON THE NEW GOVERNMENTS’ PROPOSED PRISON REFORM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTS INTIATIVES IN PRISONS

Season 12 · Episode 8

dimanche 18 août 2024Duration 35:06

ROSIE MEEK ON THE NEW GOVERNMENTS’ PROPOSED PRISON REFORM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SPORTS INTIATIVES IN PRISONS
For the final episode of this series of the #MondayMile podcast, I’m joined by a very special guest, Professor of Forensic Psychology and my yoga buddy Rosie Meek!
Rosie is an incredibly impressive woman, from working with the United Nations to demonstrating the value of sport interventions in preventing youth crime, using sport as a tool for good.
We discuss how increasing sports initiatives in prisons and in youth centres will not only help to prevent crime but will improve the mental and physical wellbeing of those who are incarcerated.
We take a deep dive into the new governments’ intentions for prison reform, discussing how it’s an opportunity to reduce the pressure on prisons to allow for more educational and therapeutic programs that can lead to fewer instances of reoffending and safer communities.
Hearing Rosie discuss the problems with the prison system today and how we can use sport initiatives to improve the system was so fascinating and I hope all you Monday Mile listeners will agree!

S11 Ep7: WOODY & KLEINY ON THEIR CAREER; FROM BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT TO INTERNET SENSATIONS

Season 11 · Episode 7

dimanche 19 mai 2024Duration 43:25

Things get very WAK-y on this week’s #MondayMile, as I take a trip out to Hertfordshire to meet YouTube LEGENDS @woodyandkleiny. They were some of the first big content creators in the UK, and I go behind the scenes to find out the secret to their longevity
Woody and Kleiny are definitely known as jokers, so I’m surprised to see just how professional their operation is. As we take laps round the garden of their base of operations, the WAK Pad, they tell me about their journey from freestyle football performers on Britain’s Got Talent, to internet sensations with billions of a views and a robust content creation machine powering them.
Across an inspiring chat, they share advice for aspiring content creators, their proudest moments of the past decade, and their belief in the law of attraction and manifestation – something we can definitely agree on!
Thanks for having me, lads!

S11 Ep6: SHONA VERTUE ON BECOMING A FITNESS INFLUENCER, LEARNING HOW TO SLEEP BETTER AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE AUSTRALIAN AND UK LIFESTYLE

Season 11 · Episode 6

dimanche 12 mai 2024Duration 29:36

We’re back with another #MondayMile and this week I’m joined by personal trainer, fitness influencer and health and wellness She-EO @shona_vertue
This week, we’re in sunny Australia, and where better to discuss health and fitness than on the gorgeous Bondi Beach? Shona and I chat about the adjustments she had to make when moving to the UK from Australia, not only with the way she keeps herself fit, but how she helped to keep clients motivated and inspired on those rainy and cold mornings…
We chat about her rollercoaster career - from being a competitive gymnast, to working in an office, and then reigniting her passion for fitness to build a huge, passionate online community.
Shona also opens up to me about how her newborn baby has changed her day-to-day, dropping the absolute truth bomb that ‘balance is a lie’. It’s one of many great pieces of wisdom she drops on me, including the importance of staying mindful everyday and being adaptable – words to live by, I think!
What an inspirational chat! And it doesn’t hurt that the setting’s so beautiful as well  Thanks Shona!

S11 Ep5: KATYA JONES ON THE POWER OF FEMALE FRIENDSHIP, BEING SINGLE, SHARING HER LIFE ONLINE AND HER PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Season 11 · Episode 5

dimanche 5 mai 2024Duration 37:24

Monday Mile goes Down Under! This week, I’ve brought the podcast to sunny Sydney, Australia, and I’m over the moon to share the experience with my best friend in the world – returning Monday Miler Katya Jones. You’ll know her best as a professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing – and, you know, being generally all over my feed 💃

We spent an unreal three-week adventure together, hitting five different places in India and then Sydney. Of course, we had to squeeze in a pod. We chat about the strength of our friendship, looking back over the impact we’ve had on each other’s lives since meeting years ago. Katya and I really do have a transformative bond, best shown by how her passion for sustainability has influenced me. We share clothes, we shop second-hand – things I never would have done years ago!

Katya’s a special person and I’m lucky I get to see the real her 💕 We talk about whether she might want to show more of that to the world too, reflecting on her choice to be private online. Though we’re both single and thriving independently, we also chat about aging and our ticking maternal clocks – right before we hit the town to meet our husbands, of course.

This episode is so special to me. An open honest and raw conversation between two best friends, with us taking a moment to appreciate each other and celebrate our learnings. We’re each other’s cheerleaders and to have that unconditional support from a friendship is very special ❤️

S11 Ep4: EILISH MCCOLGAN ON HER RECORD-BREAKING WIN AND FOLLOWING IN HER MOTHER’S FOOTSTEPS

Season 11 · Episode 4

dimanche 28 avril 2024Duration 33:53

We’re sprinting into a new week as I’m joined by @eilishmccolgan for another #MondayMile episode! 🏃‍♀️

Eilish is a 4x European Championships medallist and 3x Olympian who became the 10,000 metres champion at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, breaking her own’s Mum’s record that she’d held for 31 years 🤯  We chat about that amazing moment, and she tells me how it feels following in her incredible mum’s footsteps 🏃‍♀️

We also look forward to this year’s Olympics, delving into what it takes to qualify and the tough process of her recovering from an injury to get back to peak fitness 💪

Running is a tough sport, physically and mentally, but Eilish is fortunate to have her partner Michael along for the ride wherever she goes. They travel 11 months of the year to train for competitions, and she tells me how incredibly lucky she feels to have that support system with her through those long weeks of training.

With not long now to go until the Games, it’s fantastic to catch up with Eilish and get a real insight into what happens behind the scenes as she gets ready for the #2024Olympics

S11 Ep3: LEAH MCCOURT ON MMA AND HER DEVASTATING INJURY

Season 11 · Episode 3

dimanche 21 avril 2024Duration 31:51

I’m back on home turf for this week’s Monday Mile! It’s exciting to be back in Belfast, and even more exciting to be chatting to world champion MMA fighter Leah ‘The Curse’ McCourt (@leahmccourtmma). She’s the #1 Featherweight fighter in @bellatormma, as well as a Black belt in Brazilian jujitsu and judo. Basically, she’s a savage
Our walk takes us near the SSE Arena, where Leah was due to fight Sinead Kavanagh for the second time last month – but the fight never happened due to a HORRIFIC injury Leah suffered in training. Leah reveals exactly what happened, and talks about the pain of missing out on that opportunity (and also the very real pain of her broken rib!)
She’s both fearless and friendly, which I discover as she opens up about her tough path into MMA, including her training AND working full time while raising her daughter, and being early to the game in women’s MMA. Leah’s keen to share why she thinks it’s the most exciting sport in the world, but also what might need to change about the sport – specifically when it comes to those brutal weight cuts -
Thanks for joining me, Leah!

S11 Ep2: GREGG WALLACE ON 20 YEARS OF MASTERCHEF AND FAMILY LIFE

Season 11 · Episode 2

dimanche 14 avril 2024Duration 35:28

A brand new Monday means a brand new Mile, and in today’s ep I’m joined by British TV legend @greggawallace. You’ll know him as a judge on @masterchefuk,  but you may not be as familiar with his mission to transform our country’s health through his lifestyle platform @greggwallace.health.

I catch up with Gregg in the middle of filming Series 20 of MasterChef, where he tells us how the show has stayed fresh after decades on the air. Television is a mad world to navigate even if you’re not as busy as him, so I ask him about how he manages such a hectic lifestyle. He plans meticulously, and squeezes a lot in - including plenty of time with his wife Anna and youngest son Sid, who has severe Autism.

Strict planning also helped Gregg achieve huge weight loss in recent years. He cut out fast food and snacks and started centring his diet on healthy, hearty meals. Now Gregg helps others do the same through his website GreggWallace.Health, with the mission of halting the fast-rising obesity crisis striking our country. It’s a noble cause!

There’s lots to take away from our chat – which is ironic as I won’t be touching one of those for a while…thanks Gregg!
