mardi 20 août 2024Duration 01:05:28

October 1990 Fashion Etc.: Twin Peaks, Muscles & Be Fri Necklaces

mardi 6 août 2024Duration 01:12:05

This month's fashion stories run the gamut more than most issues. Do you want to dress like everyone on Twin Peaks? It's 1990 -- of course you do, and so does everyone else! Do you want to wear velvet? Mmmm, depends if you like everyone to see sweat stains on your catsuit. This month we're also learning why we should exercise with weights, how gardening clogs could be worn in everyday life, what benefits you could obtain from loitering around a department store wig section (???), and who came SECOND in the Sassiest Boy In America contest -- but first in our hearts. Snap that Best Friends necklace in half now: you'll want complete silence for our latest episode!

August 1990 Teen Life: Eastern Europe, Wet Pastrami & Mr. Sperm

mardi 19 mars 2024Duration 55:41

Time for a new issue! Catherine kicks things off with a dark reporting trip to several locations that were, until quite recently, in the Soviet Union. Kim shares the results from a poll of guys' and girls' views, though what we mostly remember is what we thought they looked like in their underwear. Karen walks you through each day of your month as the owner of a female reproductive system. The fiction runner-up is about...talking to pastrami. All this plus Sassy staffers' romantic boyfriends, the return of Help For Him, unorthodox uses for avocados, and much much more! Stop hitting on your attractive cousin and join us!

September 1988 Fashion Etc.: Fishing, Jean Jodhpurs & Unnecessary Accessories

mardi 27 juillet 2021Duration 01:06:28

We're dealing with the fashion, beauty, and magazine-y topics of the September 1988 issue, and not dealing with them well because the editors have given us so much to yell about! Which garments are not safe to wear in a creek, or without pants? Why would anyone hike their giant pants up so high? WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOUR DAD'S OLD JEANS?! We also look at the cold war between surfers and skateboarders (???); what's new in shoes, socks, and hair removal; new ads; Sassy Club; and why Neill gets rave reviews for...doing his actual job. Take off that NAPOLEON HAT and listen!

September 1988 Pop Culture: Kevin Dillon, Amanda Peterson & Celebrity Style Fails

mardi 20 juillet 2021Duration 51:35

This is the POP CULTURE episode, not Fashion Etc., but given all the talk of hair, we'd get it if you got confused. As extensions! On arms! Stats about who's dyeing what shade! It's a lot. Watch It has some harsh words for the Pet Shop Boys' full-length film. Listen Up features, among others, a band from Australia's nearest neighbor -- hey, Crowded House! And the features tell us all about Kevin Dillon, Amanda Peterson, and a bunch of bad candids we're supposed to think represent female stars' personal style when, let's be real, they almost certainly didn't. Pause Forever Your Girl -- but not forever; its "BOMB" review was unjust -- and join us!

September 1988 Teen Life: Racism, Boarding School & Talking Toes

mardi 13 juillet 2021Duration 53:09

Sassy's first back-to-school issue makes a few major missteps: a feature called "Living With Racism" whose white author relentlessly others her interview subjects, all young women of color; and an imbecilic fiction story from premiere issue Justine Bateman harasser John Elder. But "Where The Boys Aren't," about the all-girl boarding school Emma Willard, leaves at least one of your co-hosts yearning for some single-sex scholastics. Then we go On The Road to Lexington, where Sassy is disabused of some of its hick stereotypes; get an It Happened To Me from a girl whose house was used as a Rain Man shooting location; hear What He Said about female athletes (and, as usual, wish we hadn't); and take a trip through the feelings being expressed in Stuff You Wrote. All this plus an itchy Body Talk and a typically squicky Help in our latest episode!

August 1988 Slumber Party: Guts, Cheese & Bathing Caps

mardi 29 juin 2021Duration 33:05

How gutsy are we? Gutsy enough to share our results from August 1988's "How Gutsy Are You?" quiz, and even to critique the framing of several questions. Then we move on to your latest calls: this month, you want to talk about the quiz (and you also have some notes), narcs, bathing caps, crushes on teachers, the horror of having restaurant staff sing "Happy Birthday" to you, and so much more! We're not going to tell if you don't brush your teeth before getting in your sleeping bag for the Slumber Party!

August 1988 Fashion: Sweaters, Denim & Smart Tartan

mardi 22 juin 2021Duration 01:09:06

Let's get fashionable, August 1988-style! It's time to start your back-to-school shopping, and you KNOW that means you're going to see a fashion story about plaid. Have you also heard about denim? Or sweaters? Because those get a moment in the spotlight too. What Next is also going to tell you what's hot on the runways of real, grown-up fashion brands, while What Now scales back the difficulty level with a craft involving buttons. (Don't be scared.) This issue also features the premiere of We Try It, with Sassy staffers raiding the beauty closet and reviewing things like the Conair Fashion Plates iron that can crimp a star into your hair! You'll also learn about Cheryl in Diary, and about everyone's jobs in a feature in which all the staffers try subbing in for one another for a day. We discuss all of the above, and so much more -- so many new ads!!! -- in this week's podcast!

August 1988 Pop Culture: Lou Diamond Phillips, Guest Critics & Baby River Phoenix

mardi 15 juin 2021Duration 51:02

The pop culture coverage in the August 1988 issue is a bit slighter than we're used to, allowing us to get into nearly every bit of it. What Now tells us to get hype for The Fly II, Haunted Summer, and The Prince Of Pennsylvania, also mentioning in passing a comedy called Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, shrug. It also gets into John Stamos's new haircut, a Europe member's birthday, the unreleased Jon Cryer/Penelope Spheeris movie Dudes, the Amnesty International tour, and the dearth of women in heavy metal. Outside pop culture, we learn about "the crack" in the Sassy Glossary, and hunt down photos of the River Phoenix poster that the previous owners of our magazine copies obviously ripped out before selling them to us. To mix it up, the magazine gets a bevy of young stars it's recently interviewed, or about to -- including Alex Winter (twice), Paul Hipp, Alan Boyce, Johnny Depp, Annabeth Gish, and more -- to serve as guest critics in Watch It and Listen Up. And finally, Christina does yeoman's work in her write-around profile of an unavailable Lou Diamond Phillips. We hope YOU are available to listen!

August 1988 Teen Life: Death Row, Teacher Crushes & Boys On Makeup

mardi 8 juin 2021Duration 01:04:11

When we say the Teen Life topics of the August 1988 issue run the gamut, that is precisely what we mean. We're going to start with the story of the youngest person ever sentenced to Death Row; then review the results of a survey conducted on 300 boys in malls, on topics ranging from when they want to get married to which outfit they'd most like to see you wear on a date. Crushing on a teacher? Christina has advice on that, some of which has not aged so well. And Barbara Bondrack's short story takes us backstage at a rock show...sort of. On The Road takes us to Boston; Body Talk covers exercise bands and constipation; Help has some advice about confusing sex dreams and bed-wetting (unrelated). Two extremely important departments make their début: Stuff You Wrote and It Happened To Me! And the first IHTM is about...getting an abortion! After that heavy topic, we need to wind down with What He Said about the upcoming presidential election. Tone down your eyeliner -- that's how dudes like it, apparently -- and join us!
