41 - Shadybrook Shorthorns
Season 4 · Episode 5
vendredi 23 août 2024 • Duration 01:34:04
We stick out east in Quebec for episode 41 having Shadybrook Shorthorns with Kevin Dempsey on to talk shop.
The story of Shadybrook is fun to review. The passion that this business can ignite and the love of the breed Mr Pathy charge ahead with, it’s about the goals to improve. Celebrating their 50th year is a tremendous feat and from all of us at the Lifestock Podcast I want to extend a congratulations to the entire Shadybrook operation.
Kevin has always worked in what he loves, Shorthorn Cattle. His belief on cow quality is consistent, the appreciation of where things started to where they are as a team are working towards in very insightful. Working as a team is different than just individual decision, plus that opportunity arising from established networks is key.
Kevin and his family have developed the Shadybrook brand and also utilized opportunity within their own small herd and business ventures.

40 - Paul and Jennifer Mastine
Season 4 · Episode 4
vendredi 19 juillet 2024 • Duration 01:51:12
We are Quebec bound to talk a little Herefords and Simmental chatter with Paul and Jennifer Mastine. Plus, raising high end show dogs is not for the faint of heart!
As long time breeders of Hereford and Simmental cattle it was fun listening to some history on the development of each herd. How the goals of each are similar but the timing for growth and marketing can change for each. Paul and Jen have also been instrumental in bringing youth into the livestock show world and really encouraging the opportunities it opens up.
Laid back and fun this episode has a pile of great insight to ponder on. Be safe out in the fields putting up hay, getting home in good health will always beat out getting things done faster. Best of luck to everyone!

32 - Tanya Belsham with Poplar Meadows Angus
Season 3 · Episode 6
lundi 11 septembre 2023 • Duration 01:43:25
Tanya said right from the start before I hit record, “I usually am quite straight forward, I like doing business like that.” Tanya, I sure as heck do too! Poplar Meadows Angus is an elite supplier of Angus genetics world wide. Tanya has built her herd by sourcing top genetics in the breed that fit her vision, readily propagating them and not being shy about showing them off. With the next generation now active in the day to day, Poplar Meadows will keep doing what they love. Tanya has built a vast network of connections and a solid customer base for her bull and female sales. All based on that opening quote, being honest and straightforward.
This interview idea stemmed from a facebook post Tanya made in the winter of 2023 about what things could be done for cost savings at ‘sales events’ such as a bull sale. The post took on a life of its own and really debated topics such as sale management fees, auctioneering fees, facility rent, crew help, meals, beverage offerings, video sales, online sales… and on and on. We cleaned up the debate topics a bit and discussed some of the ideas.
We also talked about her in recent years herd reduction, the type she likes and her fire for a breed that her father loved too! I could have kept talking to her for hours. Selfishly I feel like I have expanded my network that much more too.

31 - River Hill Farm
Season 3 · Episode 5
lundi 28 août 2023 • Duration 01:26:10
It was great to venture into the Speckle Park breed! Barry and Cory Ducherer were great guests to have. A rich history in the breed from literally a crow's flight to the birthplace and origin of the Breed outside of Maidstone Saskatchewan.
River Hill is synonymous with Speckle Park and is admired across the world. They have held record highs in the sales of animals and frozen genetics. The Ducherer family has had a massive amount of success in the showring as they continuously built their brand. My favorite part is that they did all this while helping to develop and market the breed as a whole!
We touched on sourcing genetics, the frozen frenzy of flushing cows sending eggs around the world, how the market changes and having to build breed acceptance when it is not 100+ years old. Where opportunity looks to be in the future and how their family has been a part of it all.

29. Phil & Catherine Brown of Copper Creek Ranch
Season 3 · Episode 3
lundi 26 juin 2023 • Duration 01:38:37
This episode starts in the Agribition feed alley. Copper Creek were stalked nose to nose with us so one late feeding I was able to block
Phil from an easy exit and held him at gunpoint to come on the podcast… just kidding, he could have gone the long way around to get away.
Asking Phil and Catherine to be guests to me is a no brainer. Hard Working people I feel is an understatement. They have always led by example and had those results speak for themselves. With a diverse background and unique experiences we are so fortunate that they were willing to share with us on the podcast. Cow families, what should you expect from your own marketing, pivoting with change.

28. Greg Pugh of Pugh Farms
Season 3 · Episode 2
lundi 29 mai 2023 • Duration 02:01:33
One of my favorite things about visiting with Greg Pugh is that he keeps it 100%. You ask him a question and you’ll get a genuine answer. Greg has experience that does not just focus on ranch and farming, he’s had several jobs off farm and maintains one of the more open mindsets to all facets of discussion I’ve encountered.
Being realistic with yourself and acknowledging the truth about the time and effort of any endeavor is some great advice shared from Greg.
No matter what, when I meet back up with Greg around the industry it always brings a smile out with a good handshake.

25. Tom Warnyca - Warnyca Land and Cattle, Formerly WTK Polled Herefords
Season 2 · Episode 14
lundi 28 novembre 2022 • Duration 02:10:25
In the Hereford Breed he needs no introduction.
In the cattle business he is in that upper level of cattle minds and sharpness. Visiting with Tom I’ve always considered a wonderful opportunity to learn.
Tom’s marketing mindset and outside of the box thinking at the height of WTK Polled Herefords was unmatched. Countless industry leaders have personal stories about Tom and are grateful for those experiences.
I hope you enjoy listening!
