SBG 130: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century

Episode 130

lundi 26 août 2024Duration 01:07:51

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to make your heart go boom, boom, supernova girl (gender neutral).  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the classic 1999 Disney Channel Original Movie, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, Should’ve Been Gay. This movie was queer MAJOR, and if you were a kid in the 90s like us, phrases like “Cetus lupeedus!” are most likely still living rent free in your head.  For those of you who have not seen Zenon, the story follows a 13 year old girl living on a space station in the year 2049 (which seemed a lot farther off in 1999). She is a chaotic baby gay from the second she shows up on screen and cannot help but get into constant trouble with her BF Nebula, played by the one and only Raven-Symoné. When she gets into a little too much trouble, she is exiled to Earth to live with her Aunt Judy and forced to trade her space stay gay life for a boring one with way too much gravity and nowhere near enough pleather. Between the space stay residents looking like they are perpetually at a gay nightclub, Proto Zoa’s genderfluid frosted tips, the bisexual color scheme of space, Zenon’s Earth boyfriend Greg’s whole horse-girl dyke aesthetic, and Zenon and Nebula’s totally lunarious love for one another, we are not sure how anyone ever thought this movie was for the str8s. We know one thing for sure, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century Should’ve Been Gay.  You can support Lez Hang Out while unlocking a bunch of awesome perks like access to our exclusive Discord, 22 and counting full-length bonus episodes, weekly ad-free episodes, and more by joining us on Patreon at bit.ly/lezpatreon. 801: Sapphic Summer

Season 8 · Episode 1

lundi 19 août 2024Duration 01:06:06

The summer of 2024 will forever be remembered as a magical renaissance for the girls, gays and theys. From the queer women sweeping the Paris Olympics to the loudly lesbian musicians and singers topping the charts (and each other), it has truly been the hot gay summer of our dreams.  This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back in your eardrums with the premiere of Season 8 (!!!) of the little lesbian podcast that could. We’ve only been gone for a few weeks, but there is so much to talk about. Whether you’re a sports gay or not, you most likely saw at least some of the summer Olympics where 55 LGBTQ+ women made it to the podium. These incredible athletes were not the only ones breaking records this summer though, as Ellie saw firsthand at Chappell Roan’s overwhelmingly well-attended Lollapalooza set. Everything Chappell releases lately has been such a bop that the Midwest Princess effectively united the straights and the gays (even though the straights definitely still don’t understand Good Luck, Babe). But Chappell isn’t the only lesbian we’ve got blasting in our airpods. Billie Eilish has fully embraced the challenge of making sure no one ever questions her sexuality again. After releasing a chart-topping song about eating a girl out for lunch, Billie somehow made things even more sapphic by rolling around in a pile of bras and panties with Charli XCX in the Guess remix music video. We’d be remiss to not mention our girl Reneé Rapp (who we are going to sorely miss on the Sex Lives of College Girls next season) and who, alongside Chappell Roan, has been very vocal and intentional about her lesbian identity.  We would not have made it to Season 8 without the support of our wonderful Patrons! SBG 128: Mad Max: Fury Road

Episode 128

lundi 17 juin 2024Duration 01:05:42

Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants the dykes on bikes to bring us to The Green Place.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2015 movie Mad Max: Fury Road Should’ve Been Gay. Honestly, nothing could have prepared us for how gay and campy this movie is. It’s basically leather daddies vs. dykes on bikes in a post-apocalyptic desert. We could not resist covering this film in honor of the recent release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, available to watch in theaters now.  Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, is from The Green Place, a lesbian mecca inhabited entirely by women known as the Vuvalini. She wants nothing more than to escape Immortan Joe’s leather daddy war boy desert land and get back to her girls, but won’t leave without taking all the hottest women from Joe’s harem of breeders with her. When Joe realizes that Furiosa has straight up stolen all his hot ladies, he sends his war boys to track her down in a series of action-packed, explosion-filled car chases through the deserted post-apocalyptic wastelands. When she does finally get back to lesbian mecca, everyone is so excited to see her. But things are no longer going well for them in The Green Place, so Furiosa adds a bunch of the dykes on bikes to her pack and heads back to challenge and overthrow Immortan Joe.  Between the intense sapphic energy of the Vuvalini, Furiosa’s whole shaved head, protector of hot women aesthetic, and the absolute camp that is Immortan Joe and his pack of shiny boy toys, we cannot see this movie as anything other than a gay masterpiece.  We know one thing for sure, Mad Max: Fury Road Should’ve Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Find us individually on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok at Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida). Happy Pride! From now through the end of June use code lhopride for 15% off your purchase at bit.ly/lezmerch and show your pride 365! We have everything from tote bags and fanny packs to dad caps and muscle tees. Now is the perfect time to upgrade your closet and grab gifts for everyone in the group chat. 602: Collar Collar Bills with Taylor Hickson

Season 6 · Episode 2

lundi 29 août 2022Duration 01:17:11

If you’re wondering how we have survived for 6 seasons, it’s because of the Mycelium. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Taylor Hickson (@taylor.hickson), who you may recognize as the one and only Raelle Collar, the unkillable Witchbomb of Motherland: Fort Salem. This episode was recorded early into Season 3, so it is relatively spoiler free if you have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the explosive finale. We talk to Taylor about the casting process, her incredible chemistry with Amalia, what it was like to grow up alongside Raelle, and how her real life car accident changed things for our favorite witches in Season 3. Taylor explains that she was only around 20 years old when she began filming for Motherland and how because of that, there were countless parallels between her own growth and Raelle’s. She shares how much she has learned from being part of such an important and influential queer ship (Raylla) and how it has influenced her in both her personal and professional life. We talk about what it was like to film that first sex scene with Amalia after only knowing her for a short time and how they have both continually managed to bring so much honesty and vulnerability into their on-screen relationship. Taylor shares how important the show has been not only to the fans, but to the cast and crew who formed a family during the uncertainty and isolation of the pandemic. We discuss the importance of having an “unkillable gay” in the face of the BYG trope and how vital the show has been by providing so many layers of representation for so many fans. And of course, we can’t help but talk to Taylor about Bellcollar (listen to find out the ship name she and Ashley use for themselves) and Talder too, who she proudly claims to have been a big fan of from the start. We all go just as feral for Lyne Renée as Tally does in that delusion scene when Taylor gives a behind the scenes look into what it was like to be on set that day. We talk about Taylor’s music and how she ended up singing and playing guitar on the show, and of course we shamelessly pitch her Motherland: The Musical. SBG 88: Raya and the Last Dragon

Episode 88

lundi 22 août 2022Duration 58:40

Are you a dragon gay, cat gay, or Tuk Tuk gay? Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss Raya and The Last Dragon, another example of Disney making the gayest “straight” movies ever with no heterosexual explanation. Picture two little baby gays at a convention. They’re both hardcore dragon gays and are obsessed with Sisu, the dragon of legend that once saved the world. Their eyes meet shyly and there is a flash of recognition. They immediately bond over having single gay parents, loving dragons, and stuffing their faces with food. The baby gay with a serious undercut gives her prized Sisu necklace to her new girlfriend and then promptly stabs her in the back causing the literal end of the world. Have you ever heard a more dramatic ex story? The whole movie is friends to enemies to lovers to the highest extreme. The only way to save the world is for Raya and Namari to trust one another and work together. The only thing gayer than Raya and Namari’s obsession with one another is the entire land of Fang - a land filled with nothing but lesbians with undercuts riding on giant cats. Who decided on the undercuts? We just want to talk. We would be remiss if we did not discuss how extremely gay Sisu is as well. Genuinely the only way she could have been gayer is if she were colored like a Pride flag. We just wish there were another gay dragon to pair her with. Maybe in a sequel? We know one thing for sure, Raya and the Last Dragon Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 601: Gays of the Union

Season 6 · Episode 1

lundi 15 août 2022Duration 01:19:17

Gays of the Union unite! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back for a sixth season of the little lesbian podcast that could. We are excited to recap all the biggest gay moments from the past year. Almost every show we talk about has already been cancelled, but we need to talk about them anyway! We kick off with discussing First Kill which was absolutely feeding our Buffy roots. Lesbians will always love a vampire and we are absolutely here for the cheesiness of it all. Then, we get into Gentleman Jack which was completely chaotic lesbian drama the entire season. There is just nothing more relatable than having a totally unhinged ex that is perpetually in your life. Next we dive into Our Flag Means Death, which is everything we could want from a pirate show, because pirates are canonically gay and you cannot tell us otherwise. Then we get into Only Murders in the Building, which finally fulfills our gay dreams in Season 2 by putting Mabel together with Cara Delevingne’s character. We are really loving this trend in recent media where the queerness is just accepted and not a big deal. No one really has to worry about coming out and the story doesn’t revolve around that. We would be remiss if we didn’t discuss Killing Eve and the catastrophic finale. We were shocked to be thrown backwards into the BYG trope after coming so far in queer media since the horrors of 2016. Next we get into Yellowjackets which has some very strong queer representation. We finish up by talking about The Wilds which we are in denial about losing just as we were getting closer to seeing Leah and Fatin finally get together. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Leigh Holmes Foster (@lshfoster) and Ellie Brigida (@elliebrigida). Cruising Podcast: Stop #16 Pearl Bar | Houston, TX

lundi 8 août 2022Duration 47:39

It's the final week of our hiatus and we've saved a great episode from our friends at Cruising Podcast for you. Stop #16: Pearl Bar! Located in Houston, Pearl Bar is our second stop in Texas. These are the stories of the humans that run it and the humans that call it a home. Julie Mabry has wanted to open a lesbian bar ever since she visited her first one at 16 years old with her sister, Sarah. Sarah, who struggled through much of her adolescence, felt comfortable for the first time walking into that lesbian bar. And Julie noticed. Today, Julie owns Pearl Bar, and has created a safe haven there for all sorts of people. Like Paige, a single mom who picks up extra shifts with her Pearl Bar family when she needs. And Eve, who was born and raised in Lebanon, and came to the U.S. to live freely and openly. Sleepover Cinema: Cadet Kelly

lundi 1 août 2022Duration 52:34

We will be back with our Season 6 premiere in just a few weeks! In the meantime, check out this great episode from our friends at Sleepover Cinema about the iconic Disney Channel original movie, "Cadet Kelly". One of the most inexplicable (and beloved) Disney Channel Original movies, 2002’s “Cadet Kelly” starring Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano is… honestly, a strange one. Is this the story of a liberal NYC mother-and-daughter’s totally unprompted radicalization? Or is this a very subtle, tongue-in-cheek, subtext-heavy tale of lesbian pining? We don’t have the answers, but we DO have the discourse. Obvi. Coming Out Pod: Jay Toole (a.k.a. Super Butch)

lundi 18 juillet 2022Duration 01:08:42

While you wait for Season 6 of Lez Hang Out Pod, check out this great episode from our friends over at Coming Out Pod! It's officially Pride Month, and we're kicking things off with an UN-F$@#!NG-BELIEVABLE guest!! At thirteen years old, Jay Toole (known to all as Super Butch) came home with a flat top hair cut, and was promptly kicked out for good. Jay headed straight for the West Village, and before long, she was taken in by a community of homeless queer kids in Washington Square Park. What followed was over twenty-five years of living on the street, and some of the most amazing stories we have EVER heard on the podcast! It's impossible to do justice to this episode in a blurb, but among other things, Jay discusses the stints she did at the famed Women's House of Detention, and her experience AT THE STONEWALL RIOTS!!! Jay is an indispensable (and *hilarious*) resource for our community, and we cannot emphasize enough what an honor it was to talk to her. Happy Pride, everybody! (TW: passing mentions of sexual assault, but nothing descriptive) You can honest-to-God contact Jay at the number she gave out in this episode! She's also on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Superbutch, and her website is https://www.jaytoole.com/.
