SBG 130: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century26 Aug 202401:07:51
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to make your heart go boom, boom, supernova girl (gender neutral).  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why the classic 1999 Disney Channel Original Movie, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, Should’ve Been Gay. This movie was queer MAJOR, and if you were a kid in the 90s like us, phrases like “Cetus lupeedus!” are most likely still living rent free in your head.  For those of you who have not seen Zenon, the story follows a 13 year old girl living on a space station in the year 2049 (which seemed a lot farther off in 1999). She is a chaotic baby gay from the second she shows up on screen and cannot help but get into constant trouble with her BF Nebula, played by the one and only Raven-Symoné. When she gets into a little too much trouble, she is exiled to Earth to live with her Aunt Judy and forced to trade her space stay gay life for a boring one with way too much gravity and nowhere near enough pleather. Between the space stay residents looking like they are perpetually at a gay nightclub, Proto Zoa’s genderfluid frosted tips, the bisexual color scheme of space, Zenon’s Earth boyfriend Greg’s whole horse-girl dyke aesthetic, and Zenon and Nebula’s totally lunarious love for one another, we are not sure how anyone ever thought this movie was for the str8s. We know one thing for sure, Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century Should’ve Been Gay.  You can support Lez Hang Out while unlocking a bunch of awesome perks like access to our exclusive Discord, 22 and counting full-length bonus episodes, weekly ad-free episodes, and more by joining us on Patreon at bit.ly/lezpatreon. 801: Sapphic Summer19 Aug 202401:06:06
The summer of 2024 will forever be remembered as a magical renaissance for the girls, gays and theys. From the queer women sweeping the Paris Olympics to the loudly lesbian musicians and singers topping the charts (and each other), it has truly been the hot gay summer of our dreams.  This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back in your eardrums with the premiere of Season 8 (!!!) of the little lesbian podcast that could. We’ve only been gone for a few weeks, but there is so much to talk about. Whether you’re a sports gay or not, you most likely saw at least some of the summer Olympics where 55 LGBTQ+ women made it to the podium. These incredible athletes were not the only ones breaking records this summer though, as Ellie saw firsthand at Chappell Roan’s overwhelmingly well-attended Lollapalooza set. Everything Chappell releases lately has been such a bop that the Midwest Princess effectively united the straights and the gays (even though the straights definitely still don’t understand Good Luck, Babe). But Chappell isn’t the only lesbian we’ve got blasting in our airpods. Billie Eilish has fully embraced the challenge of making sure no one ever questions her sexuality again. After releasing a chart-topping song about eating a girl out for lunch, Billie somehow made things even more sapphic by rolling around in a pile of bras and panties with Charli XCX in the Guess remix music video. We’d be remiss to not mention our girl Reneé Rapp (who we are going to sorely miss on the Sex Lives of College Girls next season) and who, alongside Chappell Roan, has been very vocal and intentional about her lesbian identity.  We would not have made it to Season 8 without the support of our wonderful Patrons! SBG 128: Mad Max: Fury Road17 Jun 202401:05:42
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants the dykes on bikes to bring us to The Green Place.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2015 movie Mad Max: Fury Road Should’ve Been Gay. Honestly, nothing could have prepared us for how gay and campy this movie is. It’s basically leather daddies vs. dykes on bikes in a post-apocalyptic desert. We could not resist covering this film in honor of the recent release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, available to watch in theaters now.  Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, is from The Green Place, a lesbian mecca inhabited entirely by women known as the Vuvalini. She wants nothing more than to escape Immortan Joe’s leather daddy war boy desert land and get back to her girls, but won’t leave without taking all the hottest women from Joe’s harem of breeders with her. When Joe realizes that Furiosa has straight up stolen all his hot ladies, he sends his war boys to track her down in a series of action-packed, explosion-filled car chases through the deserted post-apocalyptic wastelands. When she does finally get back to lesbian mecca, everyone is so excited to see her. But things are no longer going well for them in The Green Place, so Furiosa adds a bunch of the dykes on bikes to her pack and heads back to challenge and overthrow Immortan Joe.  Between the intense sapphic energy of the Vuvalini, Furiosa’s whole shaved head, protector of hot women aesthetic, and the absolute camp that is Immortan Joe and his pack of shiny boy toys, we cannot see this movie as anything other than a gay masterpiece.  We know one thing for sure, Mad Max: Fury Road Should’ve Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. 602: Collar Collar Bills with Taylor Hickson29 Aug 202201:14:11
If you’re wondering how we have survived for 6 seasons, it’s because of the Mycelium. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Taylor Hickson (@taylor.hickson), who you may recognize as the one and only Raelle Collar, the unkillable Witchbomb of Motherland: Fort Salem. This episode was recorded early into Season 3, so it is relatively spoiler free if you have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the explosive finale. We talk to Taylor about the casting process, her incredible chemistry with Amalia, what it was like to grow up alongside Raelle, and how her real life car accident changed things for our favorite witches in Season 3. Taylor explains that she was only around 20 years old when she began filming for Motherland and how because of that, there were countless parallels between her own growth and Raelle’s. She shares how much she has learned from being part of such an important and influential queer ship (Raylla) and how it has influenced her in both her personal and professional life. We talk about what it was like to film that first sex scene with Amalia after only knowing her for a short time and how they have both continually managed to bring so much honesty and vulnerability into their on-screen relationship. Taylor shares how important the show has been not only to the fans, but to the cast and crew who formed a family during the uncertainty and isolation of the pandemic. We discuss the importance of having an “unkillable gay” in the face of the BYG trope and how vital the show has been by providing so many layers of representation for so many fans. And of course, we can’t help but talk to Taylor about Bellcollar (listen to find out the ship name she and Ashley use for themselves) and Talder too, who she proudly claims to have been a big fan of from the start. We all go just as feral for Lyne Renée as Tally does in that delusion scene when Taylor gives a behind the scenes look into what it was like to be on set that day. We talk about Taylor’s music and how she ended up singing and playing guitar on the show, and of course we shamelessly pitch her Motherland: The Musical. SBG 88: Raya and the Last Dragon22 Aug 202200:55:40
Are you a dragon gay, cat gay, or Tuk Tuk gay? Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss Raya and The Last Dragon, another example of Disney making the gayest “straight” movies ever with no heterosexual explanation. Picture two little baby gays at a convention. They’re both hardcore dragon gays and are obsessed with Sisu, the dragon of legend that once saved the world. Their eyes meet shyly and there is a flash of recognition. They immediately bond over having single gay parents, loving dragons, and stuffing their faces with food. The baby gay with a serious undercut gives her prized Sisu necklace to her new girlfriend and then promptly stabs her in the back causing the literal end of the world. Have you ever heard a more dramatic ex story? The whole movie is friends to enemies to lovers to the highest extreme. The only way to save the world is for Raya and Namari to trust one another and work together. The only thing gayer than Raya and Namari’s obsession with one another is the entire land of Fang - a land filled with nothing but lesbians with undercuts riding on giant cats. Who decided on the undercuts? We just want to talk. We would be remiss if we did not discuss how extremely gay Sisu is as well. Genuinely the only way she could have been gayer is if she were colored like a Pride flag. We just wish there were another gay dragon to pair her with. Maybe in a sequel? We know one thing for sure, Raya and the Last Dragon Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 601: Gays of the Union15 Aug 202201:16:17
Gays of the Union unite! Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back for a sixth season of the little lesbian podcast that could. We are excited to recap all the biggest gay moments from the past year. Almost every show we talk about has already been cancelled, but we need to talk about them anyway! We kick off with discussing First Kill which was absolutely feeding our Buffy roots. Lesbians will always love a vampire and we are absolutely here for the cheesiness of it all. Then, we get into Gentleman Jack which was completely chaotic lesbian drama the entire season. There is just nothing more relatable than having a totally unhinged ex that is perpetually in your life. Next we dive into Our Flag Means Death, which is everything we could want from a pirate show, because pirates are canonically gay and you cannot tell us otherwise. Then we get into Only Murders in the Building, which finally fulfills our gay dreams in Season 2 by putting Mabel together with Cara Delevingne’s character. We are really loving this trend in recent media where the queerness is just accepted and not a big deal. No one really has to worry about coming out and the story doesn’t revolve around that. We would be remiss if we didn’t discuss Killing Eve and the catastrophic finale. We were shocked to be thrown backwards into the BYG trope after coming so far in queer media since the horrors of 2016. Next we get into Yellowjackets which has some very strong queer representation. We finish up by talking about The Wilds which we are in denial about losing just as we were getting closer to seeing Leah and Fatin finally get together. Cruising Podcast: Stop #16 Pearl Bar | Houston, TX08 Aug 202200:44:39
It's the final week of our hiatus and we've saved a great episode from our friends at Cruising Podcast for you. Stop #16: Pearl Bar! Located in Houston, Pearl Bar is our second stop in Texas. These are the stories of the humans that run it and the humans that call it a home. Julie Mabry has wanted to open a lesbian bar ever since she visited her first one at 16 years old with her sister, Sarah. Sarah, who struggled through much of her adolescence, felt comfortable for the first time walking into that lesbian bar. And Julie noticed. Today, Julie owns Pearl Bar, and has created a safe haven there for all sorts of people. Like Paige, a single mom who picks up extra shifts with her Pearl Bar family when she needs. And Eve, who was born and raised in Lebanon, and came to the U.S. to live freely and openly. Sleepover Cinema: Cadet Kelly01 Aug 202200:49:34
We will be back with our Season 6 premiere in just a few weeks! In the meantime, check out this great episode from our friends at Sleepover Cinema about the iconic Disney Channel original movie, "Cadet Kelly". One of the most inexplicable (and beloved) Disney Channel Original movies, 2002’s “Cadet Kelly” starring Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano is… honestly, a strange one. Is this the story of a liberal NYC mother-and-daughter’s totally unprompted radicalization? Or is this a very subtle, tongue-in-cheek, subtext-heavy tale of lesbian pining? We don’t have the answers, but we DO have the discourse. Obvi. Coming Out Pod: Jay Toole (a.k.a. Super Butch)18 Jul 202201:05:42
While you wait for Season 6 of Lez Hang Out Pod, check out this great episode from our friends over at Coming Out Pod! It's officially Pride Month, and we're kicking things off with an UN-F$@#!NG-BELIEVABLE guest!! At thirteen years old, Jay Toole (known to all as Super Butch) came home with a flat top hair cut, and was promptly kicked out for good. Jay headed straight for the West Village, and before long, she was taken in by a community of homeless queer kids in Washington Square Park. What followed was over twenty-five years of living on the street, and some of the most amazing stories we have EVER heard on the podcast! It's impossible to do justice to this episode in a blurb, but among other things, Jay discusses the stints she did at the famed Women's House of Detention, and her experience AT THE STONEWALL RIOTS!!! Jay is an indispensable (and *hilarious*) resource for our community, and we cannot emphasize enough what an honor it was to talk to her. Happy Pride, everybody! (TW: passing mentions of sexual assault, but nothing descriptive) You can honest-to-God contact Jay at the number she gave out in this episode! She's also on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Superbutch, and her website is https://www.jaytoole.com/. 522: Lez-ssentials Crush with Kirsten King and Casey Rackham05 Jul 202201:37:39
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Kirsten King (@kirstenlking) and Casey Rackham (@caseyrackham), the writers of Crush, the queer teen romantic comedy of our dreams for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This is a very special season finale episode and we are thrilled to be joined by the writers of Crush, which you can find on Hulu and internationally on Disney+. Crush stars Rowan Blanchard, Auli’i Cravalho, and Isabella Ferreira in one of the only fully queer love triangles we have ever seen. It is a breath of fresh air, because instead of focusing on trauma or coming out or having a tragic ending, there is zero homophobia in sight. This is the queer teen romcom that we have always deserved but never gotten and it will have you cheesing from ear to ear the entire time. We talk to Kirsten and Casey about their 4 year long process all the way from the birth of the idea to bringing on the incredible director, producers, and cast to finding a home on Hulu. If you’ve ever wondered what a meeting with Natasha Lyonne would be like, wonder no more, because Kirsten and Casey have the answer for you. We couldn’t talk to the writers of Crush without taking some time to discuss the importance of positive queer representation in media, especially teen and young adult media in the face of so much recent anti-LGBTQ legislation and sentiment. We talk about why the representation provided by Crush is so important and revolutionary and our shared passion for increasing the amount of stories in the world that feature queer joy. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Crush titled “Double You” written by Leigh Holmes Foster, produced by Ellie Brigida, and performed by Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster. SBG 87: Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Hannah Rae Leach27 Jun 202201:30:11
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Hannah Rae Leach (@hannahraeleach), audio producer, writer, musician, and podcast co-host of Sleepover Cinema to talk about the 2004 musical comedy Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. What is with Disney giving us the literal gayest movies and then trying to pretend they aren’t gay? Lola is incredibly queer. She chose her own name, is incredibly dramatic, and loves Broadway. When she meets Ella, neither of them seem able to summon a single brain cell to have a conversation with each other and just say “hi” back and forth like fifteen times. All of the outfits in this film are very gay (cargo pants and trucker hats anyone?) and one of the first things said about Ella is that she’s “never had a fella”. It honestly isn’t even a question that these characters are gay. Then when we look at the cast, they all have so many connections to other queer media. Lola’s arch nemesis is literally played by Megan Fox; it doesn’t get much queerer than that. We know one thing for sure, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen Should’ve Been Gay. 721: Qua-Drag-Tic Equation with Kyne Santos10 Jun 202400:57:58
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants you to have the gay audacity to do ANYTHING your little queer heart desires! This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Kyne Santos (@onlinekyne), the Math Drag Queen and author of Math In Drag. From an early age, Kyne knew he loved two things, math…and makeup. He could never have known back then that those two loves would lead him on a journey to becoming the Math Queen! Through his recently released book and viral TikTok videos, he uses drag as an avenue for making math more approachable and fun for everyone. Whether you consider yourself good at math, “bad with numbers” or anything in between, Kyne is here to broaden your mindset and help you to embrace the beautiful possibilities of both math and drag.  When we are little, people decide pretty quickly to put us into the math/science box or the creative/arts box. The truth is so much more nuanced than that, with math applying to every creative pursuit you can think of. Even songwriters are doing math every single time they write a note on a page. Math in itself is a creative puzzle solving tool and when embraced can open a whole new world of possibilities. What we learn in K-12 is usually just the basic tools of math and it is a shame that learning seems to stop right before getting to the more creative applications. Math and creativity do not have to be kept in separate boxes, and Kyne’s book and videos show that there are ways to approach math that are much more relatable and fun.  We talk with Kyne about both math and gender as social constructs, the economics of being a contestant on Drag Race through the lens of Game Theory, how math is used in music (sound engineering, anybody?), and the importance of keeping an open mind about math and drag alike.  Kyne’s book, Math In Drag, is available now (and the audiobook is coming soon!). Learn more about the book and pick up your very own copy here.  Follow us on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. 521: Pride Fruit20 Jun 202200:55:28
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about the reason for the season- Pride! It’s easy to look at what Pride has become (a crowded corporately sponsored party overflowing with rainbow decorations) and forget that it was originally a fight for our rights, many of which are still under attack today. We talk about our very first experiences with celebrating Pride and how magical it felt to be surrounded by an accepting community when we first came out. Nothing feels quite like your first Pride. If you have a bunch of queer friends, live in a progressive area, and have attended multiple Pride festivals, Pride might not feel as special to you anymore. Pride has also changed a lot in recent years. The overall vibe of many of the festivals feels less authentic when instead of floats of gay men in ass-less chaps, there is just float after float advertising for banks and tech companies. However, it’s important to remember the way it felt to be in a glittery globe of love and acceptance for the first time, because so many people still don’t have the ability to live their authentic lives safely and Pride may be one of their only opportunities to be surrounded by other queer people. We talk about alternative ways to celebrate Pride and the ways Pride events have changed since the start of the pandemic. We hosted Porch Pride for 2 years and loved that it provided an opportunity for small groups of people to safely celebrate with one another outdoors. Now that we’ve been out for ages and have built a lot of support and acceptance around ourselves in our daily lives, we tend to prefer celebrating in smaller groups and leaving the crowded parades to the baby gays and allies. SBG 86: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Arlen Aguayo-Stewart13 Jun 202201:15:52
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Arlen Aguayo-Stewart (@arlenaguayostewart) and talk about why the classic 2003 romcom How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days Should’ve Been Gay. We start off by imagining Arlen’s character Nicte from Motherland: Fort Salem as the scorned ex in literally every romcom ever made. Then we dive into why this movie is so gay. First off, the characters make so much more sense if everyone in this movie is gay. What is a gayer assignment than to make a man not love you? Her actual work assignment is to drive away a conventionally attractive man. Yeah that definitely sounds super “straight”. Everything Andie does to lose Ben is basically a lesbian couple stereotype. Seriously, she moves some of her stuff in after like 2 days and buys him a plant and a dog. They go to couples therapy very early on and she takes him to see Celine Dion. She brings him to a vegetarian restaurant where she knows all the staff members. Literally the only thing that’s missing is the UHaul. When Andie isn’t with Ben, she’s heavily flirting with her female best friends/coworkers and focusing on becoming a serious lesbian journalist who writes about politics and foreign affairs. When Ben isn’t with Andie, he’s apparently with zero girls ever? His male coworkers drool over him while he changes his perpetually sweaty shirt in the office and his family reports that he has never brought a girl home until Andie. His brother full on was expecting Andie to be a guy when she showed up. Even the supporting characters are gay, from Andie’s lesbian misandrist boss to the Judies, two women both named Judy who are clearly in a long-term lesbian relationship with one another. We know one thing for sure, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 520: The Gaily Star06 Jun 202200:59:01
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about everyone’s favorite topic, gay celebrity conspiracy theories! This week we are absolutely giddy as we discuss why these theories are so much freaking fun (it’s literally science!), vaguely chat about who pings our gaydar, and scoff at the census that still thinks the LGBTQ+ community is only like 5% of the population - Who are they surveying? They definitely did not ask anyone under the age of 40. Who even has time to be heterosexual in 2022? Gays have our own secret languages and codes and look sometimes we really do know things that the Straights just do not know. SBG 85: Dawson's Creek with Samantha Aucoin30 May 202201:19:49
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor and singer Samantha Aucoin (@samanthaaucoin) to talk about why the iconic teen drama Dawson’s Creek Should’ve Been Gay. We couldn’t do an episode with Samantha without first chatting about one of our current favorite shows, Syfy’s Astrid and Lilly Save the World! We talk about Sam’s breakout role as Lilly and what she hopes to see in the future for Lilly and Candace’s enemies to lovers storyline. Then, we dive back in time to 1998 to talk about Dawson’s Creek. We all agree on Dawson being the absolute worst and quickly push him out of any love triangles. We take a look at what was actually gay, like the first kiss between two men on tv, and then lament over the disappointing refusal to acknowledge any lesbian characters. You can’t name a character after legendary lesbian Joe March and try to pretend she’s straight, but Dawson’s Creek sure tried to. We talk about how different the show would’ve been if Jen had been allowed to be a lesbian- Abby would’ve lived! We have a lot of ships, even more than the Dawson’s Creek fan website. A world of possibility opens up with the college years episodes, when we get into shipping roommates and reflecting on our own gay college experiences. We know one thing for sure, Dawson’s Creek Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 519: Gay is For Horses with Tiana Warner23 May 202200:55:55
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with author Tiana Warner (@tianawarner) to talk about her new sapphic YA fantasy novel, The Valkyrie’s Daughter. This book is giving the mythology gays everything they could ever want. It has an enemies to lovers storyline, a unique exploration of sexuality and gender roles, and a story that adapts original Norse mythology surrounding the gods and the vikings. The main character Sigrid is incredibly relatable, especially for a queer audience. She is born different from every other baby born in her realm and treated as lesser for it, but can feel her true destiny in her soul. She also has that very relatable first crush gay panic when her feelings start to change toward Mariam. We also talk about the importance of queer representation in YA fiction and the responsibility Tiana felt as a queer writer to provide that representation. SBG 84: Little Women with Irene Tu16 May 202201:03:30
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with stand-up comedian, actor, and writer Irene Tu (@irene_tu) to talk about the 2019 film adaptation of Little Women. Little Women as a book is already gay, but this film really showcases it by choosing the gayest cast possible. When you put Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, and Laura Dern into a movie, you can’t really expect us to believe it isn’t gay. The basics of the story is that life was perfect for the sisters until men got involved and then it all went downhill. The book has been called out for being “radical” for its portrayals of women, but we all know radical is just code for gay. We analyze the characters and some ships get a little questionable, but it’s not our fault that they’re written that way! We know one thing for sure, Little Women Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. Leigh Holmes Foster (@lshfoster) and Ellie Brigida (@elliebrigida). 518: Lez-ssentials Girltrash09 May 202201:16:47
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2014 musical Girltrash: All Night Long for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Girltrash was written by Angela Robinson, who also wrote D.E.B.S., and several episodes of The L Word, which pretty much explains everything about how wild this movie is. If you’re looking for a good time, Girltrash delivers. This movie is a time capsule of who’s who in lesbian Hollywood in 2014. We struggled with keeping the character’s names straight, because every actor is so recognizable from that period of lesbian television. We loved shipping Colby and Misty played by Gabrielle Christian and Mandy Musgrave who have incredible chemistry with one another after South of Nowhere. It is also really fun seeing actors from The L Word appear on screen constantly and with lyrics like “backstage sex rampage” and “first-time sex trampoline”, you really can’t have a bad time watching this movie. It is an enjoyable and strangely believable romp. The actors really commit to the character’s motivations and pull you into their chaos. We highly recommend watching Girltrash: All Night Long anytime you want to laugh, sing, and experience 2014 lesbian Hollywood. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Girltrash titled “Fantasy” written by Leigh Holmes Foster, produced by Ellie Brigida, and performed by Ellie Brigida and Leigh Holmes Foster. SBG 83: Moxie02 May 202201:14:03
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why Moxie Should’ve Been Gay. First of all, this 2021 film centers around a teenager discovering riot grrrl feminism, which has been historically known for centering its feminism around lesbianism. The recurring song in the film is "Rebel Girl" by Bikini Kill with the lyrics "in her kiss I taste the revolution." Claudia and Vivian have been best friends since elementary school and Claudia is clearly madly in love with Vivian. They go through best friend break ups, Vivian falling for the new lesbian in town, Lucy, Claudia getting suspended for her one true love Vivian and finally, best friend make ups. Feminism isn't exclusively queer, but this film about Riot Grrrl feminism is gay gay gay. Oh and there is an actual kiss between Lucy and Amaya, but if you can blink and miss the lesbian kiss, we clearly needed more lesbian context. One thing is for sure, Moxie Should’ve Been Gay. 517: Stud Finder with Sheri Johnson25 Apr 202201:07:19
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with one of Tagg Magazine’s 2022 Enterprising Women, Sheri Johnson (@the_sheri_johnson). Sheri is the founder and CEO of the streaming network Strong Voices Television (@SVTVNetwork). We talk about how she took a comment from a friend and turned it into a series and then created an entire network. We examine the idea of what it means to be labeled a stud and why Sheri doesn’t identify as one. We also talk about Sheri’s new children’s book “Black Girl Magic”. Sheri’s web series was born out of a comment that her life should be a tv show. She took that idea and ran with it and created Studville TV, a web series about four black lesbians. Studville TV was on Youtube for 3 seasons before it was demonetized by the platform. This lead Sheri to create her own streaming network with the purpose of championing the LGBTQ+ community in television, film, sports, and advocacy. The network gained 15,000 subscribers within the first 30 days from launch and has been growing ever since. SBG 82: The Edge of Seventeen18 Apr 202201:09:14
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about why The Edge of Seventeen Should’ve Been Gay. First things first, this movie stars Hailee Steinfeld as Nadine. So off the bat it’s already clearly supposed to be gay. Nadine and Krista have been madly in love since they met as children, but somehow they don’t end up together. Instead they have a horrific friend breakup because Krista starts dating Nadine’s brother. Somehow Hailee Steinfeld keeps getting cast as the lesbian who cannot stop sleeping with their sister-in-law. We have talked before about the trope of the brother as a stand in when movies are too cowardly to be gay. This movie is the extreme version of that. Every classic mistake ever made by closeted high school kids happens in this movie. The film really makes so much more sense when viewed through a gay lens, but it is also so painful to watch. One thing is for sure, The Edge of Seventeen Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. SBG 127: Luca03 Jun 202401:04:01
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that can (and will) make absolutely any character gay.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why the Disney Pixar hit Luca Should’ve Been Gay. The director has spoken about how they "thought about" making Luca and Alberto gay, but that the story is really just about anyone who's "different." To that we say, different how? Different in the way that you have to hide your identity for fear that others will think you're a monster? Different in the way that your parents want to send you to deep sea conversion camp? Different in the way that you fall asleep under the stars with your new boyfriend and your parents flip out about him being a "bad influence"? We chat about how Vespas are the gayest forms of transportation, how your first boyfriend doesn't have to be your last and how if they just said Luca was gay, it's an absolutely beautiful coming out story. We know one thing for sure, Luca Should’ve Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. Support Journey to the Heart Here: bit.ly/supportjourneytotheheart In a world where everyone shares a tattoo with their soulmate, you'd think falling in love would be easy. Journey to the Heart follows three best friends as they go on an adventure of a lifetime. Albina, Babette, and Charlie are displeased with their soulmate tattoo, or lack of one, for different reasons, and this leads them to go on an adventure that will change their lives forever.  Journey to the Heart will also be the first "choose your own journey" podcast musical. The audience will get to decide where the story goes and your choices will influence what you hear in each episode. The alternate versions of the episodes that aren't released on our main feed will be released on our Patreon for those of you who have been supporting us consistently since the launch of the Flame and new Patrons who join for this season.  This season we'll be exploring the concept of soul mates. What does it mean to not have a soul mate? What does it mean to choose your own partner and choose your own adventure despite the path that was chosen for you? We're also exploring ethical non-monogamy in a world where you're told you only have one option and it's quite literally tattooed on your body.  Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lezhangoutpod. 516: Face Your Queers with Alix Markman11 Apr 202201:18:37
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with queer screenwriter Alix Markman (@markwoman) to talk about Syfy’s new series Astrid & Lilly Save the World. We have a lot of feelings about Astrid & Lilly and are overjoyed by the positive representation that it provides. Alix informed us that there were women and nonbinary people in nearly every key creative position and we think it shows. If you grew up obsessed with Buffy, you will love Astrid & Lilly Save the World. This show is so refreshing and is an incredibly important show for everyone to see because it provides a healthy, positive portrayal of characters that are so relatable, yet so rarely seen in mainstream media. For once there are fat characters that get to save the day and kick ass and their weight isn’t treated like a joke or an issue in any way. And if all that wasn’t enough to make you watch, the queer ship of Lilly and Candace will certainly have you tuning in. It is beautiful to watch their relationship evolve and see how much Candace truly adores Lilly. SBG 81: Encanto with Jessica Darrow04 Apr 202201:46:00
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Jessica Darrow (@jessdarrow_) to talk about why Disney’s Encanto Should’ve Been Gay. Jess played the role of Luisa in Encanto and while Luisa is an obvious, stereotypically gay character, everything about this movie is queer. There are rainbows everywhere. The casita is always hopping with colorful, musical parties that attract the entire town. Honestly, every character can be viewed through a queer lens, because as we’ve discussed so many times before, magic is queer. Jess talks about her experience filming the movie and how it related to her own experiences with her family and her sexuality. One thing is for sure, Encanto Should’ve Been Gay. 515: Queer in Headlights 28 Mar 202201:16:11
Have you ever had a crush on someone and just felt powerless to make a move? In this week’s episode, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the common experience of being a queer in the headlights. Whether it’s because you’re afraid of losing a friend, not sure if the other person is actually gay, or are afraid of rejection, this is a very common queer experience. We discuss heteronormativity, making the first move, and our own experiences with rejection. We share tips to help you figure out if your feelings are reciprocated and scripts you can use to confess to your crush. We want to help you take a leap of faith and speak your truth! SBG 80: You Again21 Mar 202201:08:50
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss why the 2010 movie You Again Should’ve Been Gay. This film has an incredible cast and the gayest premise ever, but somehow manages to miss the mark entirely. We watched it, so you don’t have to. With stars like Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Kristin Chenoweth, and Betty White, we had higher hopes for this movie. The premise includes many of the typical gay tropes like the notorious ‘there’s only one bed’ situation and the inherent queerness of the archenemy, but never follows through. The multigenerational gay trauma of the two main families is a lot to unpack and does not have a satisfying resolution. The film is hindered by too much male gaze and unrealistic depictions of how women actually interact with each other. For a film that could easily give us three generations of queer women ships, it suffers from not seeing any of them through. If the movie had been gay, 99% of the flaws would’ve been avoided. One thing is for sure, You Again Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. SBG 79: Descendants with Grace Rolen07 Mar 202201:42:05
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with TikTok star Grace Rolen (@fullofgracer) to talk about why Disney’s Descendants movies Should’ve Been Gay. We discuss the inherent queerness of magic, villains, and archenemies. We also do a line for line breakdown of Mal and Evie’s love duet, Space Between. Almost every character in these movies, particularly the ones from the Isle, is queer and there are so many possible ships! The Isle full of villain kids is a queer allegory if we’ve ever seen one. We talk about the chemistry between Mal and Uma and how obvious it is that they are exes. We also talk about how in love Mal and Evie are the entire time and how bland Mal’s relationship with her actual boyfriend is in comparison. One thing is for sure, Descendants Should’ve Been Gay. 513: Everlasting Lovin'28 Feb 202201:12:21
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) tackle the age old question of how to maintain desire in a long term relationship. This question comes up a lot, especially in lesbian relationships. There’s a reason people talk about “lesbian bed death” and most of it is rooted in the patriarchy. Societal expectations around sex and desire are based on men and this can cause a lot of issues for women. At the start of a relationship when your hormones are vibing through the roof, it probably doesn’t feel difficult to get turned on or conjure up that spark of passion. But by the 3 year mark when our hormones start to stabilize and our bodies stop sabotaging our ability to think clearly, it might take a little something extra to ignite that desire. We share tips for navigating the changes to your sex life that occur naturally as your relationship progresses. SBG 78: Kim Possible with Clarissa Thibeaux21 Feb 202201:29:19
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor Clarissa Thibeaux (@clarissa) to talk about the early 2000s “girl power” Disney animated series Kim Possible. Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me. When you wanna page me, that’s real gay! This show had everything from the kick-ass teenage heroine in a problematic age gap ship with her nemesis to the campy gay villain with Frank N. Furter vibes. Shego singlehandedly made an entire generation of baby gays recognize their queerness and that’s not a feat to be taken lightly. Kim Possible also has iconic queer fashion that still holds up to this day. Don’t even lie, there are cargo pants and a crop top in your closet right now. 512: Lez-ssentials Dickinson14 Feb 202201:51:36
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the Apple TV series Dickinson for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Dickinson is essentially Emily Dickinson fan fiction, and it wastes absolutely zero time before giving us Emisue. They make-out in the very first episode. We love to see it. We break down each season and dissect Emily and Sue’s relationship throughout. We talk about the real historical people that the characters are based on and the real life relationship between Emily and Sue. 720: Lez-ssentials A League of Their Own28 May 202401:30:48
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that wants to take you out to the ball gay-me.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2022 Amazon Prime series A League of Their Own for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This series was based on the 1992 film of the same name and featured an absolutely stacked cast. Literally everyone is in this show (Even Rosie O’Donnell!). Of course we cannot talk about ALOTO without first talking about the upsetting and completely undeserved cancellation that came after giving us one of the most perfect seasons of television ever made. In spite of the series’ success, Amazon Prime decided not to move forward with a Season 2, contributing to the all too common “Cancel Your Gays” trope that has been a favorite of seemingly every modern television network lately.  If you haven’t caught on, we think this show was a home run and would not change a single thing about it (aside from making it 800 seasons long). Even with only one season, ALOTO packs in more queer women content than any show we’ve ever seen (outside of The L Word). As a period piece ALOTO does a fantastic job of showing what life was like for these women as they attempted to live as authentically as possible while navigating the laws of a heteronormative and racially segregated society. It is honestly so refreshing to see such a wide range of queer relationship dynamics on our screens, especially the ones that are not solely romance-focused. Sure, we all go feral for D’Arcy Carden as Greta spinning little gayby Carson’s entire life on its axis, but it’s equally satisfying watching Jess and Lupe’s queer masc bromance and the queer elder x baby queer dynamic between Uncle Bertie and Max. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on A League of Their Own, titled “Baseball Diamonds (Are A Girl’s Best Friend)”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. SBG 77: Swanqueen with Queer Field Day07 Feb 202201:18:51
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with two of the founders of Queer Field Day (@queerfieldday), Lilly Brown (@lilly27sings) and Kayleen Casey (@kayleencasey) to talk about the iconic ship Swanqueen from Once Upon A Time. This show is the perfect set up for an enemies to lovers ship. It’s basically a lesbian Parent Trap. Once Upon A Time is queerbaiting at its finest and all these years later we’re still not over it. If Emma were a man, their story would’ve been written to be a romantic relationship. Swanqueen was so many people’s gay awakenings and yet they never actually got together. 511: Who Tells Our Story with Mariko Tamaki31 Jan 202201:13:51
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with writer Mariko Tamaki (@marikotamaki) to talk about telling our stories. We discuss Mariko’s new YA murder mystery novel, COLD, coming out this February and her experience writing the story. We dive into the creation of COLD (in a spoiler free way) and Mariko’s decision to tell the story from multiple perspectives. We talk about tropes and the weight Mariko felt when telling a story that involves the death of a queer character. We talk about the differences in stories told by straight people that happen to include queer characters versus when we get to tell our own stories. We also talk discuss the importance of fandom, Mariko’s first experience at a queer comic convention, and why she avoids her GoodReads reviews. SBG 76: The Devil Wears Prada with Candida Valentina24 Jan 202201:07:26
Leigh (@lshfoster) hangs out with founder of the Queerly Beloved Revue, Candida Valentina (@candidavalentinaofficial), to talk about why the movie The Devil Wears Prada Should’ve Been Gay. Who better to dissect the extreme gayness of this movie than the absolute ruler of the queer burlesque scene? We break down why these characters are so gay. We’ve got Miranda, the power gay that everyone aspires to be, and Andy, a baby gay with a praise kink. Andy meets Miranda and can’t decide if she wants to be her or be with her. And we could not relate more. So many scenes in this movie have zero heterosexual explanation and we just want to know what the writers think was going on. We know one thing for sure, The Devil Wears Prada Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 510: Collabor-GAYtion with Out in Love17 Jan 202201:25:06
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) chat with storyteller and producer Elishia K. Constantine (@elishiathegreat) and screenwriter and director Kristina Pupo (@kristinapupo) about the art of collaborgaytion. Elishia and Kristina met at Clexacon in 2019 and quickly realized that they had complementary vibes, goals, and skillsets. Together they created the series Out in Love based on Kristina’s real life experiences. Since then Elishia has founded the independent production company Canon Divergence and is working with Kristina on several projects including a fiction podcast and a feature. We sat down with them to talk about the benefits of collaborating, how to find the right person to team up with, and what their creative journey has been like. SBG 75: Bridesmaids with Never Normal10 Jan 202201:24:20
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with comedians and hosts of the podcast Never Normal, Renee Santos (@reneesantoscomedy) and Jackie Monahan (@jackiemonahan) to talk about why the movie Bridesmaids Should’ve Been Gay. Bridesmaids is quite simply gay from casting to credits. Nothing about this movie has a heterosexual explanation. The only reason anyone would have for being that jealous of their friend making another friend is if there was a secret crush going on. Bridesmaids should have ended with Annie and Lillian recognizing their romantic feelings for one another and finally getting together. Alternatively, we would accept a throuple situation between Annie, Lillian and Helen. One thing is for sure, Bridesmaids Should’ve Been Gay. 508: Lez-ssentials Under the Christmas Tree20 Dec 202101:15:04
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the Lifetime’s lesbian Christmas rom-com Under the Christmas Tree for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. This movie stars Elise Bauman (@baumanelise) as Alma and Tattiawna Jones (@tattiawna) as Charlie and is the very first lesbian holiday movie Lifetime has ever produced. It is so nice watching a queer movie that has queer people both in front of and behind the cameras. The majority of the cast and crew for Under the Christmas Tree are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Even the wardrobe is gay culture - Alma and Charlie wear big jackets over hoodies and plenty of button downs. In true Lifetime holiday fashion, the movie is a super wholesome and adorable romance. Their families are supportive and there’s not an ounce of homophobia in sight. There’s some conflict over getting a Christmas tree for the governor, but overall the angst is very mild. This movie is very gay and is everything we’ve ever wanted for a lesbian Christmas movie. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original holiday song based on Under the Christmas Tree titled “Underneath the Christmas Tree” written by Leigh Holmes Foster and performed by Ellie Brigida. SBG 74: The Nightmare Before Christmas with Valerie Rose Lohman13 Dec 202101:10:02
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with BAFTA-nominated voice actor and friend of the pod, Valerie Rose Lohman (@valerieroselohman) to talk about why The Nightmare Before Christmas Should’ve Been Gay. This movie is universally a queer kid experience. Every queer kid who grew up watching this movie resonated with Jack and Sally’s journeys. We discuss Jack Skellington’s chaotic bi energy and dive into how he experiences gay puberty in Christmastown. We talk about the very relatable falling for your best friend experience as we watch Sally pine after Jack on the sidelines while he takes the time to discover his sexuality. We debate which town is the embodiment of homosexuality or heterosexuality and the bisexual implications that holds. And of course, we dive into our ships, including examining Jack’s relationship with his toxic ex-boyfriend Ooogie Boogie and his budding relationship with the secure in her pansexuality Sally. One thing is for sure, The Nightmare Before Christmas Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. SBG 126: Hawkeye with Big Gay Energy Pod20 May 202401:14:10
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that can (and will) make absolutely any character gay.  This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Kaitlynn and Theora, the co-hosts of Big Gay Energy Podcast (@biggayenergypod), to talk about why the MCU mini-series Hawkeye Should’ve Been Gay. This show is absolutely overflowing with gay energy and wildly queer casting choices, yet only has one canonically gay character. In spite of that sad fact, we can honestly read every single character in this mini-series as some flavor of queer (yes, even Clint).  If you’re unfamiliar with Hawkeye, all you really need to know is that the main character Kate Bishop is played by none other than Hailee Steinfeld, an actor we truly cannot read as heterosexual after watching her in Pitch Perfect and Dickinson. Kate is a part of the Young Avengers, following in Hawkeye’s footsteps. From having the audacity to say she’s the best archer directly to Hawkeye’s face to rebelling against her mom’s stereotypically feminine outfit selection for the gala and instead showing up in a sexy black suit, everything about Kate screams ‘lesbian’. She may be one of the good guys, but that does not stop her from flirting with hot female “villains” like Maya and Yelena.  In the comics, Yelena is presumed to be asexual, a fact that has since been confirmed by one of the comic artists. We are fully here for this representation, especially since there is a serious lack of ace and aro rep in media. However, we still can’t help but notice the palpable and incredibly flirtatious energy between Yelena and Kate in the mini-series. The “mac and cheese scene” is quite literally the reason Kaitlynn selected Hawkeye for this SBG. Whether it is meant to be sexual, romantic, or simply playful platonic banter, the chemistry between them is undeniable. In addition to the sapphic yearning we witness every single time Kate and Yelena lock eyes, we also get an Avengers Musical within the show, Linda Cardellini as Hawkeye’s wife, an entire episode dedicated to the LARPers, and even a quirky animal sidekick (Pizza Dog, you will always be famous in our hearts). We did the math and there is no planet where this mini-series could be interpreted as anything other than gay.  We know one thing for sure, Hawkeye Should’ve Been Gay.  Follow us on Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. SBG 73: Cheers with Cruising Pod06 Dec 202101:25:01
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with lesbian bar experts Sarah Gabrielli (@sarahdrama_tm) and Rachel Karp (@rachel.karp), the hosts of Cruising Podcast (@cruisingpod), to chat about why Cheers Should’ve Been Gay. Like a lot of older tv shows, Cheers did not age well and is incredibly problematic, but everything gets better when you rewatch it under a queer lens. Cheers was pretty progressive for the 80’s, but we think we could easily improve it by creating Queers, the queer version of Cheers. We really want to live in the alternate universe where Cheers is a lesbian bar. We can all agree, Cheers Should’ve Been Gay. 507: LGBTQ Taboo with Melanie Cristol29 Nov 202101:00:18
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) chat with Melanie Cristol (@melaniecristol), the founder of Lorals (@mylorals), a queer women owned company that creates single use latex panties designed to maximize pleasure for the wearer during sexual intimacy. In this episode, we dive into the taboo of trying to market anything related to sex or sexuality and how often queer creators and companies face censorship. Melanie talks about the difficulties she faced when getting funding for Lorals due to the product being marketed for pleasure of people with vulvas and for use during oral sex. There is a huge stigma around talking about pleasure and sex, especially female pleasure. It is much easier to get funding for a condom company or advertise erectile dysfunction medication, because our society views those as appropriate sexual activities, but thinks oral sex is taboo. We discuss how just using the word lesbian or LGBTQ in a post will often cause it to be censored on social media and the impact this has on queer businesses. We also talk about the wild workarounds we have used to try to get by the censors. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. SBG 72: The Lion King with Bethany Brown22 Nov 202101:20:14
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with actor Bethany Brown (@bethanybrown) to chat about why The Lion King Should’ve Been Gay. We are always talking about how important the concept of “found family” is to the gays, and what could be more “found family” than The Lion King? We all grew up watching this movie, and even though it was glaringly obvious the entire time that Timon and Pumbaa are gay, it was even more apparent when we rewatched it with a queer lens. Not only are Timon and Pumbaa gay, but there is a whole slew of queer characters from pansexual Rafiki with his “we are one” attitude to flamboyant gay uncle Scar and his unrealized twin flame Zazu. We analyze the Circle of Life, the implications of Timon and Pumbaa choosing to not only live together but also to adopt and raise a child together, and the queer-coding of Disney villains. We deep dive into Bethany’s notebook to learn about the same-sex relationships that lions participate in and are overjoyed to find out that 8% of lions engage in same-sex activities that would 100% be considered queer if they were humans. In our perfect gay Lion King, the great Drag Kings of the past are watching over Simba and his gay dads from above while they teach him the importance of accepting who you are and letting go of your past through the incredibly gay anthem, Hakuna Matata. One thing is for sure, The Lion King Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode.
