  • How modern footwear has weakened natural foot function
  • Common ways our feet change as we age, and why it’s not just about aging

  • What dancers, athletes, and yogis can teach us about foot function

  • How women’s feet change during perimenopause and menopause
  • Michelle’s top three non-negotiable practices for foot health
  • Why a “foot problem” is never just about the foot

dimanche 10 août 2025Duration 45:41

While I’m still in India, I wanted to revisit one of the most meaningful conversations I’ve had on the podcast, with Judith Hanson Lasater on non-violent communication for yoga teachers. I chose to share this episode again after receiving a surprising email that made me reflect deeply on how we speak to our teachers, students, and each other in the yoga space. This conversation is a beautiful reminder of how Ahimsa and respect show up not just in our practice, but in our communication, especially in the hard moments. I hope it offers insight, grounding, and a fresh perspective.

Episode Highlights:

  • What is non-violent communication?
  • Is NVC more significant for yoga teachers?
  • NVC is not for others but for us
  • How to engage with empathy?
  • Who is NVC for?
  • Where does violence start in communication?
  • Cancel culture in the yoga world
  • Should we respond to cancel culture in the yoga world?
  • NVC exercise live on the podcast about cancel culture
  • What are we giving our presence to? Why it matters?
  • How to ground ourselves & act from empathy
  • Difference between feeling & judgments
  • Clarity of intension
  • Updates about Judith's latest book

Cultural Appropriation 2.0 with Vikram Jeet Singh

Episode 111

lundi 13 février 2023Duration 01:07:23

What is cultural appropriation of yoga? Is it about saying namaste in class, Ganesha tattoos and wearing bindis ? Or is it more?

I had done an episode about this at the very start of the podcast but was disappointed as the yoga world seems stuck at just the superficial work. It doesn’t help that appropriation is now another trendy thing that you can buy in the yoga world. As many teachers build their careers around just this.

Vikram Jeet Singh is back on the podcast to give you an in-depth understanding of why cultural appropriation of yoga is beyond the superficial stuff. We talk about where the real work lies for yoga teachers.

This is an episode you don’t want to miss.

Episode highlights

  • What is appropriation?
  • Examples of what appropriation can look like
  • Are there types or degrees of appropriation?
  • What quality should one embody to go into appropriation work?
  • The major issues with appropriation in the yoga world
  • Should one have to spend money to learn about appropriation?
  • Where should one learn appropriation from?
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Appropriation work in India
  • Some key takeaways

5 Ways to Take Your Asana Students Into Deeper Yoga in Class

Episode 108

lundi 9 janvier 2023Duration 23:18

It's no secret that many start yoga nowadays at a yoga studio and adopt a physical practice of yoga. Doing "yoga" has come to mean doing "yoga poses". Many yoga teachers struggle to understand how to link the greater context of yoga through asana or the physical practice of yoga.

In this solo episode, Arundhati Baitmangalkar walks you through 5 easy, effective and effortless ways to start thinking about this. She reminds you to first strengthen the student's relationship with the richness and depth of asana before bringing in more yoga.

And why reading a yoga sutra to them will mean nothing if they haven't yet connected fully to their asana and the benefits they see from them.

Arundhati calls this part 1 of much more to come. She shares 5 easy ways to get this conversation started with your students.

What qualifies as advanced yoga? What are the characteristics of "being advanced" in yoga and more? The confusion around this topic is real.

We have an open conversation in the hope that more yoga teachers gain clarity about the subjectivity of advanced yoga, its nuances, and the fact that it is not entirely postural.

Vikram Jeet Singh is a lifelong yoga student, international continuing education provider and mentor for many yoga teachers. Read his full bio in our show notes.

There's way more. I hope you continue to support this podcast and the generosity of the guests by supporting their work and ours. All the details and additional links can be found in our show notes.
