While I’m still in India, I wanted to revisit one of the most meaningful conversations I’ve had on the podcast, with Judith Hanson Lasater on non-violent communication for yoga teachers. I chose to share this episode again after receiving a surprising email that made me reflect deeply on how we speak to our teachers, students, and each other in the yoga space. This conversation is a beautiful reminder of how Ahimsa and respect show up not just in our practice, but in our communication, especially in the hard moments. I hope it offers insight, grounding, and a fresh perspective.

Episode Highlights:

  • What is non-violent communication?
  • Is NVC more significant for yoga teachers?
  • NVC is not for others but for us
  • How to engage with empathy?
  • Who is NVC for?
  • Where does violence start in communication?
  • Cancel culture in the yoga world
  • Should we respond to cancel culture in the yoga world?
  • NVC exercise live on the podcast about cancel culture

Cultural Appropriation 2.0 with Vikram Jeet Singh13 Feb 202301:07:23

What is cultural appropriation of yoga? Is it about saying namaste in class, Ganesha tattoos and wearing bindis ? Or is it more?

I had done an episode about this at the very start of the podcast but was disappointed as the yoga world seems stuck at just the superficial work. It doesn’t help that appropriation is now another trendy thing that you can buy in the yoga world. As many teachers build their careers around just this.

Vikram Jeet Singh is back on the podcast to give you an in-depth understanding of why cultural appropriation of yoga is beyond the superficial stuff. We talk about where the real work lies for yoga teachers.

This is an episode you don’t want to miss.

Episode highlights

  • What is appropriation?
  • Examples of what appropriation can look like
  • Are there types or degrees of appropriation?
  • What quality should one embody to go into appropriation work?
  • The major issues with appropriation in the yoga world
  • Should one have to spend money to learn about appropriation?
  • Where should one learn appropriation from?
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Appropriation work in India
  • Some key takeaways

5 Ways to Take Your Asana Students Into Deeper Yoga in Class09 Jan 202300:23:18

It's no secret that many start yoga nowadays at a yoga studio and adopt a physical practice of yoga. Doing "yoga" has come to mean doing "yoga poses". Many yoga teachers struggle to understand how to link the greater context of yoga through asana or the physical practice of yoga.

In this solo episode, Arundhati Baitmangalkar walks you through 5 easy, effective and effortless ways to start thinking about this. She reminds you to first strengthen the student's relationship with the richness and depth of asana before bringing in more yoga.

And why reading a yoga sutra to them will mean nothing if they haven't yet connected fully to their asana and the benefits they see from them.

Arundhati calls this part 1 of much more to come. She shares 5 easy ways to get this conversation started with your students.

In this episode, we explore the art of instructing yoga. It's something yoga teachers do every single time we enter a class. Yet, many yoga teachers struggle with getting comfortable, or skillful at instructing. Because we have to take what we have as experience in our bodies and being. Make it coherent for someone else. While this sounds straightforward, it's not.

Arundhati interviews Christina Sell. A long-time yoga teacher and student. The conversation goes deep into the "art of instructing yoga". If you teach yoga asana in some capacity, this is highly recommended listen.

Episode Highlights...

  • The goal of yoga and asana teachers in giving instructions
  • Avoiding over-instructing and under-instructing
  • Quality learning and instructing amidst the fast-paced world of yoga
  • Cueing in yoga
  • Is there a difference between teaching a beginner and a more experienced student?
  • Christina's words of encouragement

Christina Sell has been practicing asana since 1991. Known for her passion, clarity and creativity, Christina’s teaching style is a dynamic and challenging blend of inspiration, humor, and hard work.

Christina has a BA in Counseling and Education and an MA in Integrative Education and Curriculum Design. She resides in Bellingham, WA with her husband, two very affectionate cats, and the world’s best dog, Locket.

7-Step Process to Nailing Asana Sequencing as a Yoga Asana Teacher02 May 202200:24:35

Undoubtedly, most yoga teachers are actually teaching only a tiny part of yoga i.e, the physical practice of yoga called asanas in modern times.

But there is a lot of confusion in the world of asana because sequencing yoga poses in an effective, cohesive, and logical manner leads to a direct favorable outcome on the student's body, breath and mind not only on that given day but also acts as an investment in the practice is a skill that most yoga teachers struggle with.

Moreso, if you've only learned how to "vinyasa" your way through yoga. This has caused more problems than solutions but most yoga teachers are yet to realize this.

In today's episode, I take you through my 5r7 step process of how I approach asana sequencing. Fair warning, you need to have had some decent quality asana education to really understand this conversation.

Grab your pen & paper, and brew your chai because this is a sequencing masterclass coming straight to you.

Must Ask Questions Before You Ask How To Get More Students...07 Mar 202200:21:50

In today's episode, I share what you need to look at before asking yourself or someone else this question of "more students". We even explore if more students is native to yoga or otherwise.

If you're a yoga teacher, sincerely wanting to share your yoga with others. Then tune in, this episode will bring to light many different nuances that are often skilled by mainstream yoga & ignored by yoga business coaches.

This conversation is structured, compassionate and will give you clarity on how to move forward in this journey of teaching more students.

Is THIS the most important yoga class you'll ever teach?01 Mar 202200:30:31

Have you ever asked yourself what's the most important yoga class you'll ever teach? Usually, you'll hear one of these 3 responses...

  • Every class is equally important
  • Teaching advanced asana because safety is important
  • Teaching aspiring yoga teachers

But for me personally, all of these miss the mark. The most important class you'll ever teach is that in which there's a beginners student or even better, a full class of beginner yoga students.

Why?

Because the beginner is a blank canvas. And you have the incredible opportunity to showcase all that yoga has to offer. To literally help change their lives. While that sounds cliched. Most modern-day yoga studios, just dump people into a level 1, slow flow or gentle vinyasa class. And let the student figure out yoga for themselves based on their interest or convenience.

This leads to many people starting yoga but not sticking to it. There is a better way! That's what we explore in today's episode & you even get a preview into my new virtual course that addresses this issue.

I've literally been trying to solve this problem for a decade. I'll be sharing all my insights with you in the weeks ahead. While this podcast is a shorty. It sets the stage for much greater clarity of things coming your way.

To sign up for the course, or the free information session. Those details will be out with next week's episode...But make sure you're on my mailing list.

The Reality of the Yoga Industry with Alexandria Crow14 Feb 202201:11:15

After the tragic events of 2020, many "big", "visible" yoga platforms - online demand platforms, digital & print media & apparel brands made big promises to do more, to be better & to initiate change by being more diverse & inclusive.

At the start of 2022, I took stock of how much the yoga world has really "moved" in this direction. There has been some change. A little. But not really where it matters. At least to me.

I invited long-time yoga teacher, thought leader &  friend Alexandria Crow back on the podcast to chat about the reality of the yoga industry in 2022. Having been a 'sought after' yoga teacher for decades, working with the biggest of labels in the industry. Alex walked away from it all.

You'll hear us chat about...

  • Who is really the yoga industry?
  • Reasons that pushed Alex to leave & work for herself
  • Causes for extreme commoditization of yoga
  • What characteristics are sought after in the industry while hiring teachers
  • Will or have yoga platforms done better since the promises of 2020
  • Tokenism displayed on social media
  • Do these big opportunities actually pay? The truth behind it
  • Do popular yoga teachers representing these brands have a responsibility to initiate change?
  • How do we not create a demand for platforms that don't live up to promises and just depend on the audience forgetting?
  • Advice for teachers - about gaining clarity.

You'll also hear us talk about contracts, NDAs, being on a magazine cover and more...

You wouldn't want to miss this one!

Seeking Clarity About Kundalini with Kaya Mindlin07 Feb 202200:45:55

Kundalini is often a confusing topic in yoga. Some people think of "kundalini" as the style of kundalini yoga. Most often yoga teachers only superficially hear of Kundalini in passing but that's it.

On the show today, Kaya Mindlin is back for the 3rd time. She needs no introduction on this podcast. You'll learn more about...

  • What is Kundalini?
  • What is Kundalini yoga?
  • What is Kundalini Yoga?
  • What are some of the practices of kundalini?
  • Is a Kundalini practice necessary? Is it for everyone?
  • Is there such a thing as a kundalini problem?
  • What are some things people can do if they do have a “disturbed kundalini process”?
  • What are some things that one can do to begin a journey with Kundalini? How should Kundalini be approached?
  • Is there anything that should be avoided?

As always Kaya packs a punch with this one. You can learn more about Kaya, her work, connect with her & more in our shownotes

Smart Yoga: 10 Injury Prevention Tips Everyone Should Know06 Jul 202500:26:20

Teaching yoga for over a decade has shown me that injury prevention is one of the most overlooked but essential parts of our practice. Yoga injuries don’t usually happen in a dramatic fall or twist, they build up quietly over time when we’re not paying attention. That’s why in this episode, I’m sharing 10 straightforward, practical tips to help you avoid injuries and keep your yoga sustainable for years to come. These insights come from my experience teaching thousands of students and running a yoga studio for over ten years.

Episode Highlights:

  • Moving regularly and not relying on yoga alone for all your movement needs
  • Prioritizing yoga fundamentals over chasing advanced poses
  • Avoiding repetitive movement patterns and fast-paced sequences
  • Limiting hands-on adjustments and always asking for consent
  • Matching class structure and pacing to students’ needs
  • Using props intentionally to support and educate
  • Encouraging strength-building, especially for hypermobile practitioners
  • Being mindful of how hormonal changes (like perimenopause) affect the body
  • Understanding why hot yoga may not be suitable for everyone
  • Exploring different styles of yoga to balance your practice over time
