You'll be OK! Here's how I know... | Annabel Bateman | 124
Season 2024 · Episode 124
Wednesday, August 14, 2024 • Duration 35:03
It’s common when you’re living with a chronic (long term) thyroid condition to not feel ok all the time. I’m here to encourage you, however, that you WILL be ok. I know because I’m ok and if I can be ok, so can you! Being ‘ok’ is not being ‘perfect’ which I don’t believe is attainable, but it is about feeling like there is hope, feeling like there are things you can do which will have a positive impact on your life.
The things I cover in this episode include:
The ebbs and flows of living long term with a thyroid condition
My almost 30 years of ups and downs
Situations that lead to not feeling ok
Warning signs you might be spiralling down
What to focus on to start spiralling up rather than keep spiralling down
My last 12 months as an example
The power of accountability
Life and death are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21)
Remember to KISS when it feels complicated
Control what YOU CAN control - 4 key areas
Getting more bang for your buck by dealing with the low-hanging fruit

Beyond the Thyroid | Dana Gibbs MD | 123
Season 2024 · Episode 123
Wednesday, July 24, 2024 • Duration 01:09:06
This is a first for the Let's Talk Thyroid podcast. The first time I've had an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) Surgeon on the show. Dr Dana Gibbs is an ENT and an allergist and is a wealth of knowledge on thyroid and hormone health. Like many of my guests, it was when she couldn't get answers to her own health challenges that she took her health into her own hands and started digging deeper, into the thyroid and beyond!
This is a fascinating conversation.
Some of what we cover includes:
Dr Gibbs thyroid story
Sinus/thyroid connection
Thyroid medication - personalised dosing, types of medications and when/how to take meds
The significance of T3
Thyroid nodules
Thyroidectomy and thyroid management after thyroidectomy (full or partial)
Interconnectedness of thyroid hormones and other hormones
Supplementing with estrogen
Thyroid & menopause overlap
Dr Gibbs 4 rules for thyroid health management.
Dr. Dana Gibbs is an educator, Hormone expert, board-certified ENT, and allergist. Dr. Gibbs attended medical school in San Antonio Texas and trained in Otolaryngology at the University of Kansas. She practiced otolaryngology in Arlington TX, USA for 23 years.
Her experience of ill health during her teen years all the way to her late 30's led to profound changes in the way she practices medicine. After spending those years unrecognized, dismissed, and told "it was all in her head", she found mentors in the Integrative Medicine world that helped her find the answers and solutions to her problems. These answers now inform her practice and educational efforts.
She recently opened Consultants in Metabolism, a direct care practice for thyroid, metabolic and hormone management for Women and Men. The practice offers live and virtual visits.
Dr.Gibbs also speaks in person and online, presenting workshops that introduce physicians and patients to the unique solutions of an integrative Hormone practice.

How to have HOPE in the midst of dealing with chronic thyroid problems | Ep 24
Season 2020 · Episode 24
Wednesday, November 4, 2020 • Duration 20:31
What is hope? "desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in ..."a strong and confident expectation... it deals with things we can't see or have received.. hope is never a static or passive thing. It's dynamic, active, directive and life-sustaining".
Every cell in your body needs thyroid hormones, including your reproduction cells! It follows that if our thyroid isn't working properly that that can contribute toward period problems.
In this episode, I talk about the most common period related problems/symptoms for both those with hypo and hyperactive thyroid conditions AND some practical things you could try to see if they help! The most important is to check that your thyroid is operating optimally.

I'd love to introduce you to my friend Nikki. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 10 years ago when she went to the doctor because she was having trouble catching her breath. I have heard other's describe this as 'air hunger'. Looking back she was also experiencing brain fog, hair loss & migraines and not long before she was diagnosed went through a very stressful time after her sister passed away.
Like many of us, when she was diagnosed she'd never heard of Hashimoto's and has done a lot of reading and research - although after wearing herself out with research has learnt to find her feet with how to manage her health.
Nikki is a church Pastor (of the church I go to) and has had to learn over time how to manage her personal boundaries in a very people-oriented line of work. We chat in this podcast episode a fair bit about stress, how she's protected her physical, mental and emotional health.

Essential oils as a gentle & powerful tool for mood management | Ep 21
Season 2020 · Episode 21
Wednesday, October 14, 2020 • Duration 34:11
As it happens the last few weeks I’ve seen a theme emerge: stress & mood management!
We know that stress has a whole lot of negative impact on our overall thyroid health. There are quite a few tools in my stress/mood management toolkit, including diet, sleep, saying no, creating ‘white space’ but my essential oils are a very important tool in that toolkit!
In this episode I talk about:
My experience with essential oils – going from a smell hater (because they made me feel sick!) to a smell lover.
What essential oils are
How essential oils work (aromatically with our olfactory system and topically entering our bodies through the skin).
What essential oils are NOT
Different essential oils, that because of their chemistry are lovely for when you want to lift your mood/feel happy and energised.
Different essential oils, that because of their chemistry are perfect for when you want to calm and settled during the day, and restful at night.
A few of my favourite ways I use these oils in my daily routine.
If you’d like my current sleep roller recipe that I rub on my temples, forearms, bottoms of my feet… pretty much all over at bedtime as part of my bedtime rituals fill out the form on the shownotes and if you’d like a simple place to start with using essential oils as your own powerful & gentle tool in YOUR toolkit, check out the Emotional Wellness Starter Kit on the same page.

Graves Disease as a patient & naturopath | Bronte May | Ep 20
Season 2020 · Episode 20
Wednesday, October 7, 2020 • Duration 48:34
As both a patient and a practitioner, Bronte shares so much practical advice for thyroid warriors of all kinds!
As a Graves Disease patient, she created her own treatment option when those offered by her doctor didn't sit well with her. She was able to significantly reduce her antibodies through diet and stress management, something many doctors don't see as possible.
We talk a lot about stress, the process of healing and mindset. You'll love Bronte's Mario Bros analogy of how we 'level up' our healing as we learn along the way in our health journeys.
"Love yourself enough to give yourself 5 mins out of your day just for you" "I send love to my thyroid everyday" "Create your own options ... you know best what your next step is" - Bronte May.
I tell you, you'll want to listen to this thyroid chat. Thank you Bronte!
------------------- Bronte is a Naturopath with a passion for thyroid health. She knows firsthand the complicated and multi-layered journey to heal from an autoimmune disease. Having had a negative experience within the mainstream medical system, she decided to educate her way to recovery… and did... healing herself from Graves disease and became a qualified Naturopath in the process.
Having learned so much about lifestyle medicine and the medical modality of Naturopathy during her own healing journey she became very passionate about helping others navigate, improve and heal their own autoimmune issues and now helps her clients by systematically uncovering the root cause of the problem, not just suppressing symptoms, and more importantly, simplifies the process of getting well again. And when she isn’t doing that, her Instagram tells us that you can find her earthing with a cup of bone broth.
Michelle was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in her early twenties and was put on medication but her thyroid antibody levels were never tested. It wasn't until about 25 years later she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's.
Trusting her instincts that she wasn't 'crazy' she kept trying to get help. This seems to be a common story for those not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto's... they know something isn't 'right' but have trouble identifying what it is.
Michelle has done a lot of inner work on her attitude, mindset and taken responsibility for managing her health. She's taken time to build a supportive 'team' around her - moving to a quieter place, some good friends, a doctor & naturopath to work with and loves our online Let's Talk Thyroid Community too.
It's funny because without her realising, she covers a few things we covered in last weeks episode too about saying no!
Thank you Michelle for sharing your thyroid story with us all, I know many will benefit.
--------------- Kickstart Your Thyroid Wellness Lifestyle Is a 30 day challenge I've developed over the years based on my 20+ years of living and learning with a thyroid issue. It incorporates the keys to thyroid health: a nutrient-dense and anti-inflammatory diet, mindset, stress management and the ability to work these into a long-term, sustainable, enjoyable wellness lifestyle. It's about being kind to your body and introducing common key elements to help you feel more energy and vitality over the long-term.
And it also offers the community and accountability of being in a private Facebook Group of people who really understand all that you're going through.
Managing our day to day stress is important for our thyroid health but what if we could remove some of the things that cause this stress?
A root cause approach to stress management? Makes more sense doesn't it?
In order to do this, we need to learn how to say no!
You'd think it would be simple. Just say no. But we know that it's not that simple.
We know that many of us with thyroid issues tend to have personalities that like to take on more than we can handle, we bottle things up and don't always express our ourselves well. It's no surprise to me that most of us have trouble saying no!
This episode is just as much for me as it might be for you!
I cover questions like:
Why don't we just say no?
How can you actually say no and keep your friends and self-respect?
We also explore the idea of setting boundaries, knowing our core values, not over-scheduling our days and lots of practical tips on how to actually say no!
