Dr Laura Gabayan | Wisdom, Resilience, and the Power of Reframing Life's Challenges

Episode 258

lundi 17 février 2025Duration 27:34

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we welcome Dr. Laura Gabayan to discuss resilience through the lens of her Common Wisdom study. Inspired by her struggle with chronic Lyme disease and the lack of thinking outside the box during this time, Dr. Gabayan interviewed wise individuals to uncover the eight key elements of wisdom.

As we delve into the eight key elements of wisdom, Dr. Gabayan shares how resilience is not just about enduring hardship but about shifting perspective—from “Why me?” to “Why not me?”. Many of the wise individuals she interviewed in her study had faced significant life challenges but moved forward with a sense of peace and kindness toward themselves. She emphasises that kindness is a strength, humility is a skill, and living in faith over fear fosters resilience.

As the conversation continues, we discuss how leaders can cultivate wisdom by serving as role models, the importance of self-awareness in developing humility, and how younger generations can nurture wisdom in an era that often prioritises ego over growth.

Aaron Hill | Former Special Forces Operative on Redefining Resilience Through Acceptance

Episode 257

lundi 3 février 2025Duration 32:03

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we explore resilience through the lens of acceptance with guest Aaron Hill. Drawing from his military background, Aaron shares how resilience is not just about endurance but also about learning, self-awareness, and accepting where you are in life. Aaron discusses how a lack of awareness often holds people back from true acceptance and how shifting one’s perception of resilience can be transformative. Aaron highlights the daily habits that have helped him build resilience, including asking for help, understanding what works best for him, and maintaining the basics consistently. Reflecting on his own journey, Aaron emphasises the importance of questioning and self-exploration in developing awareness. His key advice? Go back to the basics. Take the time to understand what you need to care for yourself, how that impacts those around you, and embrace resilience as an ongoing journey of learning and growth.

Tamzin Hall | Managing Workplace Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria: From Understanding to Action

Episode 248

lundi 4 novembre 2024Duration 31:02

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Tamzin Hall as we explore Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) and its impact in the workplace. Tamzin explains how RSD is common in neurodivergent people but affects others too, causing intense emotional pain over perceived rejection, even from minor incidents, making it difficult to move forward. Tamzin shares strategies to help those affected build an understanding of their RSD and recognise the triggers, which can aid in managing reactions both in the moment and proactively. We discuss how leaders can support employees with RSD by clearly communicating the “why, what, when” behind decisions to minimise feelings of rejection.

Paul Barber OBE | How to identify and develop sustainable talent

Episode 158

lundi 6 février 2023Duration 31:47

Hear Paul Barber, CEO and deputy chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, discuss how he goes about identifying and developing sustainable talent.

Paul highlights how the foundation of acquiring sustainable talent lies within how the organisation’s vision and values align with the potential employee, and how advancing recruitment techniques can support this. From there, regular appraisals can be set up for continuous feedback and development, as well as training and development programmes, and succession planning programmes.

Paul emphasises the importance of acting with integrity, thus “inspiring but with honesty”. In the context of the Brighton and Hove football academy, the majority of recruited talent will not make it into the professional football world. Paul says how this way of educating gives all talent the inspiration and confidence to develop, but that being honest provides them with a healthy tolerance for failure, thus preparing them for working life beyond the football academy.

Tracy Aust | How to give meaning and life to your organisation’s values

Episode 155

lundi 16 janvier 2023Duration 30:07

Values and principles are important elements of any organisation and should be rooted in the decisions we make as leaders, but how do we make sure that they are?

Tracy Aust, the Principal of West Thames College, discusses her insight into the values that she keeps at the forefront of her mind when making decisions. Tracy explains the importance of role-modelling the values and principles of your organisation when making decisions, in order to create a culture in which these values are practised and felt.

One way this can be done is by making decisions transparently, with a clear decision-making process outlined to all of your team that incorporates your values. Feedback and reflection on the decision-making process, or final decision, is important and allows those you work with to see how the way you act as a leader is aligned with the organisation’s values and principles.

“Chief Learner” Daniel de la Cruz discusses today how we can improve and develop our leaders by using team learning.
