| Dr Laura Gabayan | Wisdom, Resilience, and the Power of Reframing Life's Challenges | 17 Feb 2025 | 00:27:34 | |
In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we welcome Dr. Laura Gabayan to discuss resilience through the lens of her Common Wisdom study. Inspired by her struggle with chronic Lyme disease and the lack of thinking outside the box during this time, Dr. Gabayan interviewed wise individuals to uncover the eight key elements of wisdom. As we delve into the eight key elements of wisdom, Dr. Gabayan shares how resilience is not just about enduring hardship but about shifting perspective—from “Why me?” to “Why not me?”. Many of the wise individuals she interviewed in her study had faced significant life challenges but moved forward with a sense of peace and kindness toward themselves. She emphasises that kindness is a strength, humility is a skill, and living in faith over fear fosters resilience. As the conversation continues, we discuss how leaders can cultivate wisdom by serving as role models, the importance of self-awareness in developing humility, and how younger generations can nurture wisdom in an era that often prioritises ego over growth. | Aaron Hill | Former Special Forces Operative on Redefining Resilience Through Acceptance | 03 Feb 2025 | 00:32:03
In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we explore resilience through the lens of acceptance with guest Aaron Hill. Drawing from his military background, Aaron shares how resilience is not just about endurance but also about learning, self-awareness, and accepting where you are in life. Aaron discusses how a lack of awareness often holds people back from true acceptance and how shifting one’s perception of resilience can be transformative. Aaron highlights the daily habits that have helped him build resilience, including asking for help, understanding what works best for him, and maintaining the basics consistently. Reflecting on his own journey, Aaron emphasises the importance of questioning and self-exploration in developing awareness. His key advice? Go back to the basics. Take the time to understand what you need to care for yourself, how that impacts those around you, and embrace resilience as an ongoing journey of learning and growth. In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Tamzin Hall as we explore Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) and its impact in the workplace. | Paul Barber OBE | How to identify and develop sustainable talent | 06 Feb 2023 | 00:31:47
Hear Paul Barber, CEO and deputy chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, discuss how he goes about identifying and developing sustainable talent. Paul highlights how the foundation of acquiring sustainable talent lies within how the organisation’s vision and values align with the potential employee, and how advancing recruitment techniques can support this. From there, regular appraisals can be set up for continuous feedback and development, as well as training and development programmes, and succession planning programmes. Paul emphasises the importance of acting with integrity, thus “inspiring but with honesty”. In the context of the Brighton and Hove football academy, the majority of recruited talent will not make it into the professional football world. Paul says how this way of educating gives all talent the inspiration and confidence to develop, but that being honest provides them with a healthy tolerance for failure, thus preparing them for working life beyond the football academy. | Tracy Aust | How to give meaning and life to your organisation’s values | 16 Jan 2023 | 00:30:07
Values and principles are important elements of any organisation and should be rooted in the decisions we make as leaders, but how do we make sure that they are? Tracy Aust, the Principal of West Thames College, discusses her insight into the values that she keeps at the forefront of her mind when making decisions. Tracy explains the importance of role-modelling the values and principles of your organisation when making decisions, in order to create a culture in which these values are practised and felt. One way this can be done is by making decisions transparently, with a clear decision-making process outlined to all of your team that incorporates your values. Feedback and reflection on the decision-making process, or final decision, is important and allows those you work with to see how the way you act as a leader is aligned with the organisation’s values and principles. | Natalia Mank | It’s lonely at the top – strategies to combat loneliness | 12 Dec 2022 | 00:29:08
Natalia Mank helps empower business leaders to experience life with renewed clarity and joy, and today discusses the isolation and loneliness that many top leaders experience. 61% of CEOs feel that loneliness hinders their performance at work, emphasising not only the importance of developing strategies to guide people out of loneliness but also that you are not alone in feeling lonely. Natalia mentions a few factors that could lead to feelings of loneliness within top leaders, such as a shift in boundaries and relationships with peers you worked with before a promotion. Furthermore, they want to prove your capabilities in this position to these peers, but also to those you have to report to, such as the executive team, which could result in feeling isolated. A key strategy in overcoming loneliness is practising self-awareness by embracing structured and non-negotiable solitude. Other strategies that Natalia mentions include finding ways to connect with your team on a meaningful level, as well as investing time in speaking to a mentor or coach. Chico explains how organisations can integrate genuine behavioural changes within diversity and inclusion by understanding that it will be a continual journey of learning, and by taking accountability for this learning by questioning how to bridge certain gaps in the knowledge. Chico says how we will often learn from making mistakes, and rather than panicking and brushing off mistakes made, it’s important to acknowledge them and learn how we can move away from these mistakes in the future. | #115 Kevin Kehoe | From entrepreneur to cancer survivor - lessons in doing extraordinary things | 10 Oct 2022 | 00:31:28
Kevin Kehoe is an entrepreneur and cancer survivor; co-founder of Aspire Software, and author of “One Hit Wonder - real life adventures of an average guy”. As the book highlights, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.
During 30 years of consultancy work in landscape management, construction in snow and ice, Kevin saw a need for new software in these industries – current software lacked the ability to give the contractor everyday insight. He co-founded Aspire Software. Kevin explains 3 tips he would give someone about to start up a business: 1) People – the team you are going into business with are the most important – it’s essentially like a marriage – choose wisely! 2) Capital – most people underestimate how much they need. 3) Hours – don’t underestimate how much time setting up a business will take, and the impact this will have on your family etc. How would you cope with starting a business and then almost immediately going through a traumatic life event (in Kevin’s case, incurable cancer)? “Cancer is a brutal unforgiving disease – just when you think you’ve made progress, it kicks you back in the teeth.” Has having cancer changed your perspective on life and business? “It’s turned me into a hugger – I tell people I love them!” Kevin explains his perspective on resilience – “From a business angle, resilience is everything, especially in relation to start-ups. It is essential, especially early on. If you get the plumbing and wiring right at the beginning – the right people, the right service model etc., you don’t have to tear down the house further down the line.” Resilience can be about taking things a day at a time, which is something you really learn, living with cancer. It’s not all about grit, determination and gung-ho – that’s not resilience. Sometimes it’s just getting through the day, working through the tasks you’ve planned for that day. One manageable step at a time.

| #114 Georgie Rudd | How listening can make you a better and more impactful leader | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:27:52 | |
We are programmed to feel we add value by advising and having all the answers - particularly in a client-facing organisation. How much more value can we give by intentionally listening? Executive leadership coach Georgie Rudd is passionate about helping people find space to gain clarity by experiencing listening. Georgie describes listening as the single most important part of communication, as people have immense wells of resourcefulness and innovation within themselves. "The quality of your attention determines the quality of other people's thinking." (Nancy Kline) Georgie talks about the power of allowing someone to share, and of how easy it is to underestimate the impact your listening can have on someone else. To increase the impact further, pairing high attention with really brilliant questions provokes deeper thinking and can be very powerful. Georgie explains the impact of listening on team dynamics, strategic development, and business innovation; and shares three things that leaders can do to make a positive difference to their interactions. Listening also plays a significant part in the trust equation of credibility, reliability and intimacy, over self-interest. Listening takes time, but is definitely a skill worth learning and deploying. | #113 Tom Cleary | Self-compassion will make you a better leader | 26 Sep 2022 | 00:27:07
Stop and reflect on the last time a close friend went through something difficult, or made a mistake at work - how did you respond? Then think of how you respond to yourself when you go through challenging situations or get things wrong - how do you speak to yourself? A go to phrase we say to ourselves is, "You idiot!" Well-being and mental health consultant and trainer Tom Cleary specialises in self-compassion and leadership, and works with athletes, veterans and high performing leaders - many of them suffering from burnout. Tom explains that with increased self-compassion comes increased self-awareness, which also fosters compassion towards others. One of the elements of self-compassion is mindfulness - a key component in resilience, well-being and success in business. In this podcast Tom Cleary explains why self-compassion is so important, and how leaders who demonstrate self-compassion can positively impact their teams and business. | #112 Tracey Howes | From insomnia to a full 7 hours sleep and much more through Functional Breathwork | 20 Sep 2022 | 00:35:04
From insomnia to a full 7hours sleep, Tracey Howes has helped many people through Functional Breathwork, including elite athletes; cross channel swimmers; and free divers (of which she is one). Tracey is an Advanced Oxygen Advantage instructor, teaching the science behind functional breathing techniques. People who breathe poorly often snore; may have tense shoulders/back muscles; cold hands and feet, and may feel a tightness across the top of their chest.
Tracey shows how nasal breathing and Functional Breathwork can eliminate these issues. She herself suffered from insomnia, panic attacks (resulting in hospitalisation), before finding that nasal breathing was key to overcoming these issues. During a Silent Retreat Tracey focused on nasal breathing, which stimulates the vagus nerve - the largest nerve in the body. The vagal nerve connects to all our major organs enabling us to shift from a sympathetic (fight or flight) state, to a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state. Tracey explains that through breathing we can empower ourselves to change state.
When we focus on nasal breathing, rather than mouth breathing, molecules of nitric oxide are activated in the nose, and along with carbon dioxide this acts as a vasodilator and relaxes the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen rich blood into the lungs. This can activate the vagus nerve, bringing us into a parasympathetic state. Functional breathwork also improves outcomes in the workplace; supports immunity; and can help prevent exercise- induced asthma. Listen to the podcast for more fascinating insights into the science behind nasal breathing!

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Mark Sampson as we explore how businesses can maintain their team spirit and culture during periods of rapid growth. Mark reflects on his own journey and explains that as companies scale, it’s easy to lose sight of the core elements that made them successful and stand out in the first place. To prevent this, Mark shares how leaders must focus on their "CORE"— Customer, Origin, Reason, and Ethos. Mark shares practical strategies for engaging your CORE within your team, including how to discover your origin story, as this isn’t something that is created, but rather discovered and nurtured. We touch on how we can maintain these core values and incorporate them into daily actions, even with hybrid working teams, helping to build a strong culture that can endure growth. Ultimately, Mark emphasises that maintaining culture requires intentionality and understanding of what truly defines your organisation from the inside out. | #111 Elaine Hart | What does it mean to thrive? | 12 Sep 2022 | 00:38:19
Power Fitness Events founder Elaine Hart is our guest on this week's podcast. Power Fitness essentially provide spin bike classes in a truly original way, and have to be experienced to be understood - the only real similarity with a normal spin class is that you are on a spin bike. Chief Banana Officer Elaine describes these sessions as an immersive group ride experience that connects and empowers people, transforming their mental and physical fitness. Having attended one of Elaine's spin sessions recently, on the beach at sunrise, I can honestly say that no other spinning class comes close to achieving the holistic goals that Elaine supports each individual to achieve in the sessions. You will not leave the group feeling anything like you did when you started!
Elaine has developed this business from scratch, having previously worked in luxury goods and high performance motor sports events. During the pandemic Elaine ran Power Fitness on donations for 2 yrs - all the sessions were online, and people could access them with or without a spin bike - walking, dancing, exercising at home, running - any kind of movement enabled you to participate fully in the session, you only needed internet. In this way Elaine provided extremely accessible mental health support, where the connection and empowerment experienced through the sessions gave people, who may or may not have been struggling during the pandemic, tangible and very affordable support.
Elaine talks about what it really means to thrive; the importance of focusing on controlling the controllable's and not everything else; and encourages us to ask questions such as, "Who was I, before the world told me who I should be?"

Simply Icecream founder and owner Sally Newell talks about how she successfully navigated her business through the pandemic, despite losing 70% of her customers. Sally explains how she had open and honest conversations with staff about the financial implications of covid, and maintained regular contact with them, whilst they were on furlough. Sally's 4 adult children moved back home and helped with the day to day running of the business, pulling together as a family to make icecream during the pandemic. In order to retain staff post pandemic, and meet new requests for greater flexibility post lockdown and furlough, Sally brought in two Production Managers and two new shift patterns to balance people's work preferences and keep the business moving forward. Sally explains how she has always run 2-3 businesses at a time, and lived life at 100mph. She said lockdown gave her thinking space, and she implemented a franchise distribution, launched a vegan range, and dog icecream - all ideas that she previously hadn't had the time to put into action. Sally continues to navigate the unknown waters of business life post-Brexit, post-covid, the impact of the war in the Ukraine, the fuel crisis, and the general rising cost of living. She has seen dairy prices almost double, and explains how she manages to keep her own business going, without doubling her own prices. At the end of your meeting/conversation, what do you want people to walk away saying? How do you want them to feel? How do you need to be, in order for others to leave your interaction feeling inspired and connected? Best selling author and founder of the Leaders Shift Project Shani Magosky discusses these questions in this latest podcast. Shani explains how people will remember how you made them feel, more than what you said. She advocates having a "to be" list, as well as a "to do" list - How do I want to show up? What mindset do I want to have when I'm communicating? Be intentional, plan to be enthusiastic, transparent and vulnerable in your communication. Vulnerability brings connection and psychological safety, and is the number one indicator of a high performing team. CEO and founder of 3 companies Charles MacLaughlan discusses the Adaptability Quotient, and why it is both measurable and something we can see increase. One key concept within adaptability is being able to unlearn assumptions that have led to our default actions. Charles explains ways to measure both the internal and external environment in relation to adaptability, including factors such as mental health, and psychological safety within the workplace. | #106 Lisa Gable | How to successfully turn around a failing company | 08 Aug 2022 | 00:28:40
Lisa Gable has been helping companies return from the brink for 30 years. She is a US advisor to Fortune 500 companies, a Wall Street journalist and USA Today bestseller. In this podcast Lisa explains how to spot the telltale signs of failure; how to navigate the challenges of restructuring a company; and most importantly, how to identify and focus on exactly what needs to be done. If you could wave a magic wand what would you want your company to look like? Lisa talks about how to conceptually burn your company to the ground and then build it back up again, to achieve that perfect vision of the future. Auditing and ranking current activities helps you to maintain a clear focus in order for your company to be successful, thriving and competitive. Lisa works with companies in very transparent and specific ways, consistently communicating and acknowledging any changes that may be making people feel uncomfortable. She takes lessons from Roman history - Caesar was known to regularly talk to his troops and listen to what they were saying; and the first President George HW Bush sent handwritten notes to staff to praise and acknowledge. Lisa has to make very tough and often unpopular decisions when working with companies, but ensures she consistently listens to and values her staff, in order to maintain relationships even with those who leave the company. | #105 Andres Fonseca | How to support your staff so that presenteeism doesn’t negatively impact your organisation.. | 01 Aug 2022 | 00:34:12
Is presenteeism costing your business? In 2021 people turning up for work unfit to do so cost UK businesses £24-28 billion in terms of lost productivity. In the public sector 42% of people will turn up for work even if not well enough to do so. In the private sector this rises to 51%. People struggling with aspects of their mental health are particularly likely to succumb to presenteeism as they feel their careers may be negatively affected if they admit to having mental health issues.
Physician, Psychiatrist and Senior Executive of privately held companies in the mental health field Andres Fonesca discusses presenteeism in the workplace, and what it might mean for your staff and your organisation. Andres addresses how to support your staff so that presenteeism doesn't negatively impact your organisation.
Andres is committed to improving service provision for NHS patients. He is currently CEO of Thrive, a company dedicated to creating evidence-based digital tools to detect, prevent and treat mental health conditions.

| BOOST #12 | How to use visualisation to create success | 22 Jul 2022 | 00:10:05 | |
Welcome to this solo series called BOOST, the purpose is to give you little BOOST to your day, to further provide ways to create a thriving organisation.
Michael Phelps famously credits visualisation to his success in the 200m butterfly at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He won gold and set a world record despite not being able to see for the last 75m while water filled up his leaky goggles. You may be thinking, yeah I get it for elite sports but what has that got to do with the workplace. Well you can use visualisation whether for personal or business, the effect is just the same.
What is visualisation? In essence it is a mental rehearsal using all of your senses – see, feel, hear, taste and smell.
Why is visualisation Important? Visualisation is important because it helps to prepare and to teach you how to respond to a situation before it happens. It also helps you achieve your goals by conditioning your brain to see, hear, and feel the success in your mind.
How does it work? Visualisation will engage the reticular activating system (RAS)—a bundle of neurons that acts as your filtering system and helps you to determine what information is important vs. what is not important. The phrase ‘you get what you focus on’ is linked with the RAS, and the reason why goal setting works and is important, since you are setting your RAS to filter everything for the goal achievement.
Three types of visualisation There are 3 main types of visualization in performance psychology: outcome visualization, process visualization and clarity visualisation. I use all 3 types with my coaching clients where appropriate.
Clarity visualisation is when you look ahead to what you would like to see, hear and feel and then track back to find clarity of steps to get there. Outcome visualisation is when you imagine your end goal. For example, you see yourself winning and crossing the finishing line of a running race. Process visualisation is when you imagine each step it will take to get to your end goal. For example, you mentally rehearse yourself giving a presentation to an audience, going through the whole process of the event.
Does visualisation work? In essence yes, and there are lots of examples used in sport along with everyday business, but also there was an empirical study conducted by Dr. Blaslotto at the University of Chicago in 1996 on visualisation.
Dr. Blaslotto’s study was conducted by asking a group of students who had been randomly selected to take a series of basketball free-throws. The percentage of made free throws were tallied. The students were then divided into three groups and asked to perform three separate tasks over a 30 day period. – The first group was told not to touch a basketball for 30 days, no practicing or playing basketball whatsoever. – The second group was told to practice shooting free throws for a half hour a day for 30 days – The third group was to come to the gym every day for 30 days and spend a half hour with their eyes closed, simply visualizing hitting every free-throw.
After the 30 days all three groups were asked to come back and take the same number of free-throws they had in the beginning of the study. – The first group of students who did not practice at all showed no improvement – The second group had practiced every day and showed a 24% improvement – The third group however, the group which had simply visualized successful free-throws, showed a 23% improvement
Mental rehearsal (or visualisation) is powerful because the subconscious processes the experience as a real one (by firing those neurons that are responsible for skill acquisition), makes the person calmer and more adapted to stressful situations, and can speed up the learning process.
How do you mentally visualise? The process visualisation technique is a common one I use with my clients. Before you visualise, get yourself in a relaxed state, this can be done by sitting down, closing your eyes and taking 3 deep breaths in and out. Once you are relaxed, visualise the situation, for example speaking at an event in front of a audience. Mental visualise what you will see, the people, the venue, the stage etc. Then what you can hear, you speaking, the audience and other noises you may hear in the room. Then move onto how you will be feeling when you are speaking, what you can smell, has food been served and also what you can taste. Try to make the visualisation as vivid as possible, it helps if you have already been to the place before. Now visualise it all going well, using all the senses – see, hear, feel, smell and taste. Now think of number of scenarios where there might be some obstacles to your presentation, e.g. you get a dry mouth as you are speaking, the technology doesn’t work etc. Now visualise the plans to mitigate those things going wrong, the plan B’s, e.g. having a glass of water to drink if you get a dry mouth. I would suggest you spend around 5 minutes on this visualisation, and look to do it a few times prior to the event itself.
In summary, visualisation is a powerful way to prepare yourself for an event or situation before you even get there, along with gaining insights into what could be the obstacles that get in the way, which gives the opportunity to develop strategies to overcome those obstacles.

| #104 Sally Orange | What are the analogies between endurance racing and mental health | 18 Jul 2022 | 00:51:14 | |
*** Trigger warning - mentions of suicide ***
The analogies between endurance racing and mental health have often been cited. In this fascinating podcast Sally Orange draws comparisons between her extreme physical adventures and her challenges with severe depression, suicidal tendencies and crippling anxiety. Sally has completed over 8 Ironman triathlons, 71 marathons, along with events such as Ride Across America. She is the only person to have run a marathon on every continent dressed as a piece of fruit. Her creativity when taking part in such events is all to raise awareness and money for mental health charities. Sally describes how any big challenge needs breaking down into achievable parts, whether that is getting through the next minute/hour without attempting suicide, or completing the Marathon Des Sables. Setting and working towards a goal is helpful for her mental health, and she is committed to both supporting charities and raising awareness. When in Antarctica to run a marathon, Sally found the 24hrs of daylight hard, and found that as in life, we need a balance between the good times and the hard times, the light and the darkness, in order to fully live and fulfill our own potential. | #103 Dr Rebecca Williams | How to empower and equip your team to manage their own stress | 10 Jul 2022 | 00:34:23
How to empower and equip your team to manage their own stress. As a GP of 20 years, Rebecca saw a multitude of variations of the harm caused by stress, with most people coming to her at crisis point, when it was hard to disentangle what might be causing the physical and mental health symptoms she was presented with. This led Rebecca to start her own business, Williams Stress Management. She now helps people manage their own stress levels by recognising symptoms and putting in effective boundaries. Rebecca explains how some physiological systems are suppressed when we're under acute or chronic stress, such as the immune system, gut health, and sexual and reproductive health.. Chronic stress can also affect processes in the brain leading to mental health issues. Organisations would benefit from education within the workplace to help people identify potential stressors in their lives, and develop strategies to manage this, understanding how stress might be affecting them physically, mentally and emotionally. Employees experiencing acute or chronic stress have a prefrontal cortex which is less active, leading them to be less able to concentrate and more prone to memory lapses, as well as having difficulties making decisions and planning. This can lead to more anxiety, loss of confidence, and a general downward spiral ensues. Rebecca explains simple tools to help us manage our own stress, work more productively, and generally enjoy life more. | #102 Tarin Calmeyer | How to support wellness when your organisation works remotely | 04 Jul 2022 | 00:33:25
How to support wellness when your organisation works remotely? The opportunities and challenges facing managers who want to provide holistic support for employees' well-being are discussed in this fascinating podcast with Tarin Calmeyer. Tarin describes wellness as a way of looking at your whole life - financial, social, physical, spiritual etc, and describes wellness as an optimal state of thriving. Tarin also shares about the, now more widely known but possibly not so widely practised, science of breathing. The breath is the single most important way to bring yourself into a state of productivity and creativity, because it takes you out of your head and into your body; into your rest, digest and destress parasympathetic nervous system. Breathing brings us into the now, and out of living mentally in the past or the future, being driven by our fight or flight sympathetic nervous system. Tarin shares examples of the impact her online wellness sessions have had on organisations, and why wellness should be an intrinsic part of work culture, whether we are office-based or work remotely. | #101 Tom Finn | How to turn your team into an ideas factory | 27 Jun 2022 | 00:31:37
How to turn your team into an ideas factory, giving you a modern engine of innovation to drive ROI. CEO and Co-founder of Leg Up Tom Finn talks about how to achieve the balance between kindness and accountability within servant leadership, and explores reasons behind the turnover tsunami of the current Great Resignation. The importance of having a growth mindset is nothing new, but Tom explains how to move people from the fear that causes a fixed mindset, into the freedom of a psychologically safe workplace, making the most of the talented individuals that we have employed. Tom explains servant leadership, and how to create a psychologically safe workplace; along with how to work as a leader with your own potentially autocratic boss - adjusting your style when you manage up, but being a filter for the communication coming down to your team. Tom's six ways of creating psychological safety can be used just as effectively in the boardroom or round the kitchen table at home with your family. | #100 Corina Walsh | How to identify and support emerging leaders | 20 Jun 2022 | 00:29:55
In this podcast Corina discusses how to identify and then support emerging and front line leaders. She prioritises "coach-ability" as the number one trait to look for when identify future leaders; and advises organisations to consider having two different leadership tracks - one for business/technical leadership, and one for people leadership. Corina advises companies to give any employee the chance to practice leadership skills in a low risk environment, and gives examples of this. New leaders need supporting in their role - knowing how to have a difficult conversation is a skill set that can be learned, and, like giving effective feedback, is something which a new leader can learn and practice in training. The managers of these new leaders also need to know (or to receive training on) how best to support the new leaders they are responsible for. Corina discusses how to create an environment within your organisation allowing and encouraging people to show emerging leadership skills or potential. | #99 Gillian Selby | Creating a service mindset to achieving sales growth | 13 Jun 2022 | 00:34:12
Seeing sales in a new light: Ex global business director Gillian Selby talks about the impact of taking a collaborative approach to sales, and elevating your business as one unit, rather than seeing sales as a stand alone entity. She explores the value of having a service mindset approach, as opposed to a company seeing themselves as the experts and expecting clients to come to them. She explains the longer term value of wanting to be of service to people; going out and meeting them where they are; listening first to establish the needs they may have. This may mean a slightly slower take off in terms of sales, but will lead to much higher revenue and return. The cost of client acquisition is high, and Gillian looks at how a business can increase the sustainability of their client relationships, looking for a longer term investment in clients, rather than the "sales-driven" approach, which may be quicker but is less sustainable in terms of client relationships. The entire company needs to be included in this type of approach, and the sales team need to be involved in more than just selling. | #97 Patrick Aylward | How to have leadership and business impact through collaboration | 30 May 2022 | 00:31:45
Intent on changing the way people interact, author Patrick Aylward is having a global impact with his ideas on collaboration. He shares how collaboration leads to opportunities and innovation; whereas mediation, debate and conflict resolution close down this potential to innovate and grow. Where conflict resolution is inherently reactive, collaboration is proactive.
Patrick is a former litigation lawyer, and author of The Collaborative Path. He defines collaboration as the pursuit of dual outcomes, creating solutions to situations and building stronger human relationships: "What's different in my approach to collaboration compared to conflict resolution or 'getting to yes' is that I address where conflict comes from, and what we can do to prevent it, whereas the field addresses what to do after conflict arises. Getting to 'yes' becomes about how to negotiate after negotiations have broken down. Conflict doesn't arise from differences, conflict arises from the fact that we use the debate model to discuss the differences."
Patrick talks about the importance of having a curious approach, rather than one of judgement, and to consider the opportunities that may be in the differences. He explains that perspectives are often presented as truth, which is not the case; and that debate slows innovation as it always favours the status quo. "We can't debate without being judgemental, in the same way we can't collaborate without being curious."

| #96 Isaac Kenyon | How to harness the power of knowing your purpose to achieve meaningful goals | 22 May 2022 | 00:45:35 | |
Eco-adventurer, Geoscientist and expedition leader Isaac Kenyon talks about the mental toughness needed to row for 3 days and 10 hrs on an indoor rowing machine with no sleep (gaining a world record); and the success of using meta-cognition for this event.
Growing up, Isaac was not always safe outside or in school, and therefore spent a lot of time indoors as a teenager. Camping and fishing trips with his dad opened up a whole new world, but not one that he embraced until he was older. University coincided with the digital revolution which had an impact on Isaac's mental health and he found that just being outside "wiped the overfull whiteboard of his mind".
Isaac combined his love of sports and being outside to help navigate mental health issues, taking on challenges that were even more about the process than the end result. Isaac developed an awareness and understanding of his own thought processes and used meta-cognition to help him through difficult situations. He broke difficult challenges down into smaller chunks - like he did with his world record indoor row, he mentally divided into 15 minute segments of time.
Isaac spoke at the United Nations COP26 and has made an internationally recognised award-winning film. He enjoys finding new adventures to challenge himself physically, mentally and spiritually - ones that give him a purpose much greater than just completing the challenge. Isaac is a Science Communicator, a TED talk speaker, and a trustee of Mind in Hertfordshire. He is always trying to find the balance of combining sport and being outdoors with digital working.

| #95 Matt Phelan | How to have happy and engaged employees through neuroscience | 16 May 2022 | 00:39:02 | |
Is there a correlation between employee happiness and customer happiness? Can emotions be translated into data to show the relationship between engagement in the workplace and the top 4 happiness drivers? The Happiness Index co-founder Matt Phelan discusses how to analyse data on employee happiness, engagement and productivity from a neuroscience perspective, coaching his clients to use data to make effective decisions for their businesses. Matt believes people are the future of technology, and explains what it takes for an organisation to thrive. He correlates a thriving business with a high happiness score on the Index, along with a high engagement score. Matt shows how a low happiness score even with high engagement does not lead to a culture of thriving; and he brings neuroscience into the workplace to make sense of the data. The Happiness Index data shows the current "Great Resignation" in the UK to be emotionally driven, not rationally driven. Psychological safety; freedom to take opportunities; feelings of acknowledgement; and positive relationships are shown to be the top four happiness drivers in the workplace. Matt states that although the order of importance of some of these happiness drivers differs culturally - across the world the number one factor affecting employee happiness is having positive relationships in the workplace. Matt is the author of Freedom to be Happy. | #94 Louise Larkum | How to create a top down culture of mental well-being in your workplace | 09 May 2022 | 00:33:29
Today I am interviewing Louise Larkum who is the Founder and Director at Mindcare Training. Deloitte's undertook an official independent review and found that for every £1 they had spent on mental health and well-being in the workplace, they received a £5 return. Join Louise Larkum as she discusses how to create a top down culture of mental well-being in your workplace. Louise explains how, as a leader, you can have effective conversations with employees to address mental health concerns. By carefully choosing the right environment at the right time, you can sensitively and specifically share your concerns, and give your employee the chance to be open about any current issues they may be facing - at the very least you are showing that you have noticed and you care. Louise discusses the importance of compassionate leadership, and shares facts such as 50% of people having an episode of depression do not go on to have any further episodes in their lives. A mental health diagnosis is usually for a period of time, not for life. 80% of employees taking extended time off due to mental ill health, including stress, do not return to the same workplace. It costs a baseline of £30,000 to re-recruit, therefore a proactive culture towards mental well-being can significantly benefit your business, and most importantly could have a life-changing impact on your employees. As Louise explains, the far-reaching results of having properly trained mental health first aiders in your business cannot be overstated. | #93 Jasmine Harrison | Breaking the world record and becoming the youngest ever solo female to row any ocean | 02 May 2022 | 00:51:55
Today I am interviewing adventurer Jasmine Harrison.
At 21 years old Jasmine Harrison is the youngest female to row solo across any ocean. Jasmine recently spent 70 days rowing alone across the Atlantic, enduring capsizing, hallucinations, sleep deprivation, an inability to eat (which she was not expecting!). Jasmine explores the importance of knowing your "why"; and how keep on overcoming challenges. She explains the power behind hearing her voice speak out loud the actions she needed to take, helping her very narrowly avoid a collision with a drilling ship. Horrendous weather within the first few weeks was pushing her boat in the wrong direction - she would row for 18hrs making only 6 miles progress in the storm; then sleep for 2hrs only to have the boat dragged 4 miles in reverse. "It took me another 12 hours to gain back those lost 4 miles. I had to keep going though - no matter your situation, it could be worse. I knew I just had to get clear of the storm and I'd be OK." Jasmine is currently planning a sea swim in July 2022, from Lands End to John O'Groats...Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwHfXkAKiL0 Connect with Jasmine: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jasminerharrison/ Website: https://www.rudderlymad.co.uk/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/rudderlymad Email: info@rudderlymad.co.uk Helping SME’s build resilient, high performing teams and businesses, quickly, so they can innovate, deliver, and thrive.

In this episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we are joined by Philippa Davies as we explore the challenges women face in advancing to leadership positions in STEM. Philippa shares how many women are leaving the STEM industry before reaching leadership positions, often due to workplace cultures that lack inclusivity and flexibility. Philippa delves into how organisations can better support women, especially new mothers returning to work, emphasising the importance of flexible working arrangements, coupled with the support of well-trained line managers. We explore practical strategies for women to maintain career momentum through pregnancy and parenthood, as well as discussing how men can actively support women’s success by serving as role models for working parents. | #91 Chris Howard | How to perform at your best when you feel your worst | 18 Apr 2022 | 00:59:30
Today I am interviewing British adventurer Chris Howard.
"Our mantra went out the window when we left port, and it became very scary, but we used that fear." Extreme endurance adventurer and father of three, Chris Howard chats about some of his most recent adventures, including rowing the Atlantic and walking the coast of Great Britain (a marathon a day for 450 consecutive days). He talks about how to perform at your best when you feel your worst, and how to use negativity to fuel success. Chris was able to fund raise for Children in Need during his coast walk, knowing that disadvantaged and vulnerable children around the UK became even more at risk and often in danger during the lockdowns (childhood deprivation is an issue that Chris has first hand knowledge of from his own childhood). Raising significant amounts of money for charity to support children became a source of inspiration during his walk. Chris explores other driving forces behind extreme challenges, and of how not to let the excuses of today become the regrets of tomorrow. Chris had undertaken adventures as a teenager (including walking 2800 miles on the islands along the west coast of Thailand), and it was whilst at work one day he realised, "I shouldn't have been doing this every day, I should have been doing that!" He is about to embark on rowing round the coast of Great Britain, along with publishing his book about walking around the coastline.
