Wine of the Year?! Master Sommelier reviews Hallidays Top Pick in 2025
mercredi 24 septembre 2025 • Duration 22:36
Is this really Australia’s best wine? The 2024 Thistledown “Charming Man” Single Vineyard Old Vine Grenache has just been awarded Wine of the Year, Red Wine of the Year, and Grenache of the Year at the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion Awards.
In this episode of Got Somme, Angus O’Loughlin and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos taste and review the $95 Grenache to see if it lives up to the hype.
You’ll hear from winemaker Giles Cook MW on what makes this single vineyard McLaren Vale Grenache so special, plus Carlos breaks down how to assess Grenache vs Pinot Noir on colour, nose, palate, and ageing potential.
We tackle the “Poor Man’s Pinot” debate, explore the history of Grenache in Australia (Barossa & McLaren Vale old vines), and ask: is this wine really worth $95—or more than $300 on a restaurant wine list?

SGM - 2019 John Duval 'Plexus', Barossa Valley
jeudi 4 août 2022 • Duration 10:58
We apologise!
This podcast is on a mission to find the best quality bottle of wine UNDER $30 and this week we splurged and spent $35.99 at the time of recording. Why? Master Sommelier Carlos Santos was interested in trying this bottle because it was made by John Duval, one of only four Penfolds chief winemakers, who was also in charge of developing Australia's most well-known export, "Grange."
We genuinely hope you don't mind reaching a little further into your pockets this week as we learn about "SGM." Stay tuned for an interesting explanation of why this isn't labeled "GSM."

Blind Tasting - Carlos surprises Angus with an old favourite!
jeudi 28 juillet 2022 • Duration 10:29
After host Angus O'Loughlin had surprised Master Sommelier Carlos Santos TWICE with blind tastings he decided to enact his revenge! Choosing a wine they both had tried previously on the podcast to make things a little easier Angus then had to go through the structures we have learnt since episode one of 'Got Somme' and narrow it down to his final selection.
Did he get it right? Did we unnecessarily build the tension with 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' sound effects? Press play to find out!

Rioja - 2016 Marqués de Riscal, Rioja Spain
jeudi 21 juillet 2022 • Duration 11:03
“I really enjoy Rioja’s, when I was working in a restaurant in London it was very popular. The British wars with France meant they were getting their wine supplies from Spain so it became very popular“ - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
Smelling and tasting like a good expression of Rioja for the price point our Master Sommelier tries his best to persuade Angus to take a deeper dive into the glass however he is met by Angus' description of it being "underwhelming".

Chardonnay - 2020 Robert Mondavi 'Private Selection', California
jeudi 14 juillet 2022 • Duration 11:44
"I want to compare with what we tried a couple of weeks ago" - Master Sommelier Carlos Santos
After Angus questioned how climate affects Chardonnay on a recent episode while trying a cold climate Australian Chardonnay, Carlos thought it would be a good reference point to show how a warmer climate changes the flavour profile. If you're tasting this alongside us be prepared for an intense nose and flavour as our Master Sommelier helps us to explain how wine on the other side of the world is created!

Shiraz - 2016 Zema Estate, Coonawarra, South Australia
jeudi 7 juillet 2022 • Duration 11:36
This wine we thought we knew what to expect with the the Coonawarra region and were surprised when we one flavour characteristic dominated the palate.
A classic Aussie shiraz that "will appeal to a lot of people and 2016 under $30 becomes very interesting" the Zema estate is a solid foundation for our countries red wine backbone. Be prepared to head to the butchers after this episode for the appropriate food pairing!

Chardonnay - 2021 Garagiste 'Le Stagiaire', Mornington Peninsula
jeudi 30 juin 2022 • Duration 12:04
Are colder climates better for Chardonnay? What's warmer climate varietals taste like? What's the difference between it and Chablis?
Angus had lots of questions about this Mornington Peninsula take on a classic grape and both our host and Master Sommelier Carlos Santos were surprised at this wine on the palate. Buttery, ripe and balanced Carlos could even see you matching this with a chicken curry!

Montepulciano - 2016 Carpineto, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Tuscany
jeudi 23 juin 2022 • Duration 11:15
A wine that translates to " Noble Wine from Montepulciano" is worthy of our podcast!
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of Tuscany's classic red wines, made primarily from the Sangiovese grape. In this episode Master Sommelier Carlos Santos describes the subtleties between this bottle and a previous episode featuring a Nebbiolo as Angus struggles to identify the differences.
This bottle will enter either Angus or Carlos' Top 3 wines under $30 but who will make the choice?
