205. Resilient Leadership and Gender Norms: Insights from Lisa DeFrank-Cole

Season 1 · Episode 204

mardi 3 décembre 2024Duration 37:12

Lisa DeFrank-Cole, Gen X, joins Yo who talks with us about resiliency and other important traits for women leaders. Lisa is Director and F Duke Perry Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies at West Virginia University, and is widely known for her academic and practical expertise in women’s leadership.

She is a leadership coach and has been coauthor/coeditor of the following three academic books about women and leadership including an award-winning textbook:.

Women and Leadership: Journey Toward Equity

A Research Agenda for Gender and Leadership

Women’s Leadership Journeys: Stories, Research, and Novel Perspectives

Lisa overcame many stereotypes as a first-generation college graduate from Appalachia to reach where she is today. WV Living magazine named her a “Wonder Woman” in 2019, celebrating her for defying barriers and working towards uplifting West Virginia.

Topics Covered:

Why resiliency is an important leadership trait What other skills/traits women offer  What are gender norms & alignment   Likeability vs competence    Masculine and feminine traits    What are different strategies to promote equity  What is a leader identity (claiming vs granting)

3 Episode Takeaways

1.   Hardiness is needed for women to be leaders. Resilience is the ability to get back up after being knocked down and trying again. Women face challenges that are different than men when it comes to leadership.

2.   There’s a flexibility and empathy women bring to leadership situations. Because we are scanners women can assess where people are coming from. Research states women bring a transformational approach into organizations. Women can be the “glue” that holds things together which can be unrewarded and overlooked.

3.   Gender norms are changing but not equable yet. It is going in both directions for men and women. Leaders are seen in their ability to make decisions or be agents of change, and how society perceives these differently for men and women is the real challenge.

195. Jimmy Carter’s Enduring Legacy: Peace, Music, and Leadership

Season 1 · Episode 194

mercredi 16 octobre 2024Duration 17:50

This month we’ve been talking about grief and this episode could be an example of anticipatory grief because we’re talking about Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who recently on Oct 1 celebrated his 100th birthday.

Our hope is that you'll be inspired by this short Sound Bite episode.

There is a ton of things to admire about him – I recently shared some of them with some Millennials I know who said, "Wow, I had no idea" so we're taking the opportunity today to share some of my learning with you about this man.

Topics Covered:

President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office

Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President

Carter’s friendship with musicians

A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events

His quotes about leadership

Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:

1.   Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live.

2.   Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’.

3.   While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am already grieving our loss.

105. Pathways to Purpose: Navigating Career Choices and Fulfillment

Season 1 · Episode 106

mardi 10 octobre 2023Duration 25:45

Randi Roberts (Boomer), Executive and Career-Life Coach, joins Yo to discuss career fulfillment and enjoyment. They both want everyone to jump out of bed and want to go to work! They discuss reasons to be optimistic about younger generations becoming leaders, obstacles that can get in the way and practices, like gratitude, that can make the road smoother. They also talk about the leadership skills involved in managing change.

3 Takeaways:

1.   The biggest obstacles of enjoying our work can be internal which means we can be the solution and with small shifts we can make a big difference.

2.   Millennials and GenZers seem smarter about asking questions about living with purpose – and finding our purpose can start with asking what our priorities right now where we are in life.

3.   Do the inner work to know what’s working for you or not, so you work on the right problem. Randi offers her Career Satisfaction Assessment tool based on eight pillars she’s found in her work.

103. Courageous Leadership in DEI: Emotions, Identity, and the Bumpy Road to Change

Season 1 · Episode 103

mardi 3 octobre 2023Duration 31:59

Maria Morukian (Gen X), recognized organizational development practitioner specializing in training, coaching, and facilitation with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and intercultural competence, joins Yo to discuss trends in DEI, emotions that can be present when leading DEI initiatives, and how “jaggedy” those efforts may appear. They also get into intergenerational expectations and how the societal polarization could be shifting its way back.

Maria is the President of MSM Global Consulting, and an adjunct faculty member at American University’s School of International Service.  She previously served in leadership and organizational development positions at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute and the U.S. Department of State. She has also served in leadership positions at Management Concepts and the National MultiCultural Institute. Over the last two decades, Maria has trained and coached thousands of individuals around the world to build practices for better communication, foster competent and respectful workplaces, and navigate conflict for meaningful culture change.

She has worked with such diverse clients as PBS Distribution, the National Park Service, National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement..

3 Takeaways:

1.   There are numerous emotions likely to be present for leaders when implementing DEI initiatives (fear, shame, courage).

2.   We all want to have a balance of belonging and being recognized four our uniqueness. We want to be known for who we are.

3.   There are complex deeply entrenched systems which have been around for a long time. We have to be willing to see the process as “jaggedy” and may not come out right or the way we hope the first time we try DEI initiatives.

101. Speaking While Female with Author, Dana Rubin - Amplifying Women's Voices!

Season 1 · Episode 101

mardi 26 septembre 2023Duration 24:56

Dana Rubin, author of the book, Speaking While Female, joins Yo to discuss why it’s been so hard for women to speak in public historically. They also take a look at why speaking in public can be difficult and Dana offers some advice to help overcome the discomfort. Lastly, Dana (Boomer) offers great insights into how younger generations are leading the way when it comes to speaking up with confidence.

3 Takeaways:

1.   Women have been speaking throughout history – for every effort to silence a woman, women did speak back (and that covers every ethnicity and race) – but we just didn’t acknowledge their words, their presence in public.

2.   Public speaking can be difficulty for women even today because of the criticism they can face about how they sound or how they look…but it is changing a bit.

3.   If we don’t speak in public and miss out on the practice and experience to get better.
