| 205. Resilient Leadership and Gender Norms: Insights from Lisa DeFrank-Cole | 03 Dec 2024 | 00:37:12 | |
Lisa DeFrank-Cole, Gen X, joins Yo who talks with us about resiliency and other important traits for women leaders. Lisa is Director and F Duke Perry Endowed Professor of Leadership Studies at West Virginia University, and is widely known for her academic and practical expertise in women’s leadership.
She is a leadership coach and has been coauthor/coeditor of the following three academic books about women and leadership including an award-winning textbook:. Women and Leadership: Journey Toward Equity A Research Agenda for Gender and Leadership Women’s Leadership Journeys: Stories, Research, and Novel Perspectives Lisa overcame many stereotypes as a first-generation college graduate from Appalachia to reach where she is today. WV Living magazine named her a “Wonder Woman” in 2019, celebrating her for defying barriers and working towards uplifting West Virginia. Topics Covered: Why resiliency is an important leadership trait What other skills/traits women offer What are gender norms & alignment Likeability vs competence Masculine and feminine traits What are different strategies to promote equity What is a leader identity (claiming vs granting)
3 Episode Takeaways
1. Hardiness is needed for women to be leaders. Resilience is the ability to get back up after being knocked down and trying again. Women face challenges that are different than men when it comes to leadership. 2. There’s a flexibility and empathy women bring to leadership situations. Because we are scanners women can assess where people are coming from. Research states women bring a transformational approach into organizations. Women can be the “glue” that holds things together which can be unrewarded and
overlooked. 3. Gender norms are changing but not equable yet. It is going in both directions for men and women. Leaders are seen in their ability to make decisions or be agents of change, and how society perceives these differently for men and women is the real challenge.

| 195. Jimmy Carter’s Enduring Legacy: Peace, Music, and Leadership | 16 Oct 2024 | 00:17:50 | |
This month we’ve been talking about grief and this episode could be an example of anticipatory grief because we’re talking about Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who recently on Oct 1 celebrated his 100th birthday. Our hope is that you'll be inspired by this short Sound Bite episode. There is a ton of things to admire about him – I recently shared some of them with some Millennials I know who said, "Wow, I had no idea" so we're taking the opportunity today to share some of my learning with you about this man. Topics Covered: President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President Carter’s friendship with musicians A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events His quotes about leadership
Here are 3 takeaways from our episode: 1. Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live. 2. Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’. 3. While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am already grieving our loss.

Randi Roberts (Boomer), Executive and Career-Life Coach, joins Yo to discuss career fulfillment and enjoyment. They both want everyone to jump out of bed and want to go to work! They discuss reasons to be optimistic about younger generations becoming leaders, obstacles that can get in the way and practices, like gratitude, that can make the road smoother. They also talk about the leadership skills involved in managing change.
3 Takeaways:
1. The biggest obstacles of enjoying our work can be internal which means we can be the solution and with small shifts we can make a big difference. 2. Millennials and GenZers seem smarter about asking questions about living with purpose – and finding our purpose can start with asking what our priorities right now where we are in life. 3. Do the inner work to know what’s working for you or not, so you work on the right problem. Randi offers her Career Satisfaction Assessment tool based on eight pillars she’s found in her work.

| 103. Courageous Leadership in DEI: Emotions, Identity, and the Bumpy Road to Change | 03 Oct 2023 | 00:31:59 | |
Maria Morukian (Gen X), recognized organizational development practitioner specializing in training, coaching, and facilitation with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and intercultural competence, joins Yo to discuss trends in DEI, emotions that can be present when leading DEI initiatives, and how “jaggedy” those efforts may appear. They also get into intergenerational expectations and how the societal polarization could be shifting its way back.
Maria is the President of MSM Global Consulting, and an adjunct faculty member at American University’s School of International Service. She previously served in leadership and organizational development positions at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute and the U.S. Department of State. She has also served in leadership positions at Management Concepts and the National MultiCultural Institute. Over the last two decades, Maria has trained and coached thousands of individuals around the world to build practices for better communication, foster competent and respectful workplaces, and navigate conflict for meaningful culture change. She has worked with such diverse clients as PBS Distribution, the National Park Service, National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement..
3 Takeaways: 1. There are numerous emotions likely to be present for leaders when implementing DEI initiatives (fear, shame, courage). 2. We all want to have a balance of belonging and being recognized four our uniqueness. We want to be known for who we are. 3. There are complex deeply entrenched systems which have been around for a long time. We have to be willing to see the process as “jaggedy” and may not come out right or the way we hope the first time we try DEI initiatives.

| 101. Speaking While Female with Author, Dana Rubin - Amplifying Women's Voices! | 26 Sep 2023 | 00:24:56 | |
Dana Rubin, author of the book, Speaking While Female, joins Yo to discuss why it’s been so hard for women to speak in public historically. They also take a look at why speaking in public can be difficult and Dana offers some advice to help overcome the discomfort. Lastly, Dana (Boomer) offers great insights into how younger generations are leading the way when it comes to speaking up with confidence.
3 Takeaways: 1. Women have been speaking throughout history – for every effort to silence a woman, women did speak back (and that covers every ethnicity and race) – but we just didn’t acknowledge
their words, their presence in public. 2. Public speaking can be difficulty for women even today because of the criticism they can face about how they sound or how they look…but it is changing a bit. 3. If we don’t speak in public and miss out on the practice and experience to get better.

| 99. Personal Letter Writing vs email: How Would You Score Chatgpt? | 14 Sep 2023 | 00:08:52 | |
Today’s Sound Bite episode builds on Ep 98 where we discussed the book A Daughter is Special by Meenakshi Singh which was about the letters sent by her mother in India while she was studying in the U.S. – it brought the following question to mind for me after that episode: What do we think about letter writing, as defined as either handwritten or typed AND mailed versus an e/m sent digitally? So I did some research and checked in with my new best friend, Chatgpt and asked why letter writing is important. And then I thought it would be fun to see what you thought so I reached out to listeners in our FB Group to take a poll to indicate if they agreed with what Chatgpt said. They didn’t know at the time that the statements were ai generated and we’ll compare their answers to mine as we go along. | 98. A Daughter is Special with Meenakshi Sinha: Letters From A Mother in India to Her Daughter Living Abroad | 12 Sep 2023 | 00:34:15
Meenakshi Sinha (GenX) and her 11 year old daughter, Radhika Chandra (Gen Z), join Yo to discuss a book Meenakshi put together based on letters from her mother, Mridula Sinha, in India while she was in the U.S. working on her PhD. During the episode we explore some of life’s biggest lessons that Mridula wanted all daughters to know, the biggest being they are special. Originally the letters were written in Hindi and published in the Air India magazine, Swagat. Meenakshi translated them into English to fulfil her mother’s wish – that the wisdom and advice contained in the letters reach a wider audience. Our hope is that you’ll experience the same humanity, love, and connection when listening to our episode that one gets from reading this book. About Mridula Sinha (1942-2020) A renowned writer in Hindi and politician in India. She served as the Governor of the Indian state of Goa from August 2014 to October 2019. She authored more than 50 books in Hindi, both fiction and non0fiction. In 2021, she was posthumously awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, for her contributions to the fields of literature and education. Meenakshi is her fourth child and her only daughter. More About Meenakshi: Meenakshi Sinha worked as an economist for several years before finding her calling in art. She paints in acrylics and watercolors, and uses her works of art to raise funds and awareness for Seattle-area nonprofits. Meenakshi lives in Kirkland, WA, with her husband, their 11-year old daughter and a pup named Toffee. 3 Episode Takeaways: 1. The importance of social connections and relationships cannot be overstated and their impact on our well-being and success. 2. Grief can be a powerful way of finding strength in life’s hardest moments but let’s celebrate the milestones, even the smallest of them, they can help us cover a long distance. 3. We’ve concluded it is the content of a letter rather than form that is most important in communication – do whatever works best for you! | 96. Dolores Huerta: The Woman Who Led the Farm Workers Movement Alongside Cesar Chavez | 05 Sep 2023 | 00:28:35
In this episode, Yo celebrates Labor Day, the national holiday in the U.S. that remembers all those that have contributed and when she thought about what leaders best represented the American labor movement she was drawn to the efforts of Cesar Chavez, maybe it was because Chavez was her maiden name, or that he resembled her own father’s looks, or that SJSU has a monument to the man in the center of campus that calls to her whenever on campus, or that she boycotted grapes for years when growing up, or joined her dad as a very young girl, like 6 years old, on the picket line when LAUSD teachers were striking in 1960. She talked the idea of the episode over with one of her trusted advisors, her millennial daughter, Emma, who said, why do Cesar? Why don’t you do Dolores Huerta – tell her story as the female who took the lead alongside Cesar? After all, Dolores did everything that Cesar did – but she did it while raising 11 children! So the episode was born and research began. 3 Episode Takeaways: 1. Dolores was a tireless advocate for the rights of farmworkers, children, immigrants, and others. 2. It was her words “Si, se puede” (Yes, we can) that became the rallying for the farmworker’s movement and was later borrowed by Barack Obama during his election campaign. 3. She was fierce negotiator, the first non-lawyer, Latina,

| 95. Our Top 5 Barbie Movie Takeaways & The Leadership Skills We Admired! | 31 Aug 2023 | 00:35:33 | |
Canny girls, Emma and Kiki, are back in the house to join Yo. The 3 of us recently went to see the movie, Barbie, together and wanted to share some of our key takeaways. When originally thinking about the movie and doing an episode around it, I wondered if it might be too silly but what really convinced me to see the movie was hearing the monologue Gloria makes in the movie about it being literally impossible to be a woman which began with: “You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.” And Gloria continues to outline all the expectations and I knew I was in. See link below. “Spoiler Alert”: we will cover some of the plot and quotes from different scenes. So if you’d rather not know these and are going to go see the movie maybe skip this episode? You can come back to it after you see the movie and we hope you’ll let us know what you think! And I should also say the three of us were big fans of the movie and if you saw the movie and didn’t like it, we’d love to hear your thoughts. We also understand if you’d rather skip the episode. And if you didn’t like it and still listen to our episode we applaud you and thank you for your empathy and respectful understanding. We clearly see it’s not a film for everyone!
3 Episode Takeaways: 1. All 3 of us were a thumbs up – casting, screenplay, set design, and production all hit the mark. 2. Probably our favorite Barbie was anxiety ridden depressed Barbie - she comes with sweatpants, eats through a family sized bag of starburst until her jaw hurts and then watches the BBC's pride and prejudice. 3. Barbie had some leadership skills we admired: communication, partnering, listening with empathy, courageous, problem solving, and strategizing.
As Mentioned in the Episode:
Gloria’s monologue about the impossibility of being a woman.

| 193. Grief Explored: Emotional Complexity, Healing, with Insights from David Kessler’s Finding Meaning and Other Experts We Love. | 02 Oct 2024 | 00:32:45 | |
So we like to cover books and have guests on the show to talk about emotions so we can be better leaders and based on the number of listens, you like to explore those topics with us. And there’s one emotion we realized was suspiciously absent from our list. And that emotion was grief. As some of you know we recently lost the dog we’ve had the pleasure of loving and caring for, over the last 7 years, Caitlin. She was a very spicy 13 yo Frenchie and we are so grateful to her breeder who thought it would be great for her to live her later years with us. There were several things that the event of losing Cait, as we liked to call her, brought to the forefront as I went through the process of grieving. Here’s what we’ll cover in the episode so you can choose to listen or not and it’s okay if it’s not – grief is a complex and difficult topic, particularly if you’re going through something right now.
Topics Covered: What is grief? And we’ll reference Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart for that. Is the grief of losing a pet different from losing a person we love? Can grief bring other losses to the forefront? Is the experience of grief different if it’s sudden rather than having the time to prepare? How do emotions around grief like guilt manifest themselves? What does the author, David Kessler, have to say about the Sixth Stage of Grief of finding meaning? What does the author, Victor Frankel, say about grief?
Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:
1. Grief is deeply personal and complex:
Grief isn't limited to the death of a loved one and can manifest through a wide range of emotions, often involving sadness, guilt, or anger. 2. Grieving a pet can bring up layered losses: The loss of a pet can trigger cumulative grief, where past
losses reemerge and intensify the current experience. While society may not always acknowledge the depth of pet grief, it can be just as profound as grieving a loved one. Pets provide emotional support and companionship, making their absence felt in everyday life. 3. Finding meaning is a crucial part of healing: David Kessler's "Sixth Stage of Grief" teaches that healing goes beyond accepting loss; it's about discovering meaning in the aftermath. This process helps us honor the memory of what we've lost and find purpose in life again. Meaning is personal and can come from ongoing connections with loved ones, rituals, or reflecting on the lessons their lives offered.

| 86. Book Discussion: Machiavelli for Women by Stacey Vanek Smith – 500 Years Later & What He Says About Leadership | 02 Aug 2023 | 00:18:40 | |
When you hear the name Machiavelli, what do you think? Historical figure? His work “The Prince” which offered pragmatic and often controversial advice to rules on how to gain and maintain power? Maybe an Amoral Realist who believed the end justifies the means and that rules should be ready to employ deceit and cruelty to achieve their goals? And if someone uses the adjective “Machiavellian” it’s done so to describe cunning and manipulative behavior? Maybe not a good thing, right? I know I thought some of those things myself but after reading Stacey Vanek Smith’s book Machiavelli for Women I learned a lot more about Machiavelli and came to appreciate the lessons he can offer all of us about leadership and power. And our hope after listening to this podcast, you will too! So I ask you to suspend any prior beliefs you may have about Machiavelli and let’s open yourself ourselves up to hearing about this man’s writing done during the Renaissance period and their application to us today as proposed by the author! 3 Episode Takeaways 1. No, you’re not crazy. The no-win situation is real but we can navigate all kinds of ways and Machiavelli offers us insights into doing just that. 2. The Cinderella Syndrome and the Hotbox can be a disadvantage but by being aware of them can open up new possibilities by changing the story. 3. Facing the bias monster will mean embracing the hardship and struggle. | 84. Inspiration from the book: The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin S. Sharma | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:08:13
This Sound Bite is a combination of building on a previous episode which was Ep 83 where we explored intuition by digging into the Trust Your Gut of the book, Trust Yourself, by Melody Wilding, and we are gathering inspiration from Robin S. Sharma’s book The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.
Sharma’s fiction book is about courage, balance, abundance, and joy through eyes of the character Julian Mantle, a lawyer forced to confront the spiritual crisis of his out-of-balance life when he has a massive heart attack right in the middle of a courtroom.
Here are the Takeaways:
1. Thoughts are vital and most people don’t give any thought to the nature of their thoughts yet the quality of our thinking determines the quality of our life. 2. Stillness if the stepping stone to connecting with the universal source of intelligence.

She uses the term “Sensitive Strivers” for those of us that are high achieving sensitives and it describes Yo to a T. We’ll explore when our sensitive traits can be a liability and also what it means to overthink things. Enjoy the listen. Here are the episode take-aways: 1. STRIVE (sensitivity, thoughtfulness, responsibility, inner-drive, emotionality) taken to an extreme can be a liability. 2. The best way to address overthinking is by naming and reframing. 4. Today’s Sound Bite show builds on Ep 80 were we discussed the book Emotional Agility by Susan David, PhD. There were a couple more gems Yo wanted to share with you: 1. It’s all too easy to be hooked on the notion – known as correspondence bias – that someone else’s behavior can be attributed to fixed personality traits. 2. Caring too much can cause us to lose perspective – might be better to care less.

| 80. Book Discussion: Emotional Agility by Susan David, PhD, With Help From The Velveteen Rabbit | 11 Jul 2023 | 00:25:11 | |
In this episode Yo digs into the book Emotional Agility by Susan David, PhD, to explore the science-based approach to navigate life’s twists and turns. It’s about getting unstuck, embrace change, and thrive in work and life. She states that how we deal with our thoughts, feelings, and self-talk ultimately determine how successful we’ll be. David has a special chapter on Becoming Real and she works in the book, The Velveteen Rabbit by Marjorie Williams. Yo discovered this book in college and treasures her own copy. You’ll hear a bit more from the book than what David offered because it’s so close to her heart. Enjoy the listen. Here are the episode take-aways: 1. Emotional agility is the absence of pretense and performance which gives our actions greater power because they come from our own core values (not someone elses). 2. | 192. The LadyShark Mindset: Abundance, Bravery, and Confidence with Chrissy Grigoropoulos, Esq. | 25 Sep 2024 | 00:26:29
Chrissy Grigoropoulos, Esq., Millennial, is a self-made millionaire and author of the book, LadyShark: How to Become a Millionaire in Your 30s. She is founder of the multi-location law firm, The Grigoropoulos Law Group. She is a corporate real estate broker for Property Shark Realty Inc., an investor, and CEO of IME Sharks Inc. She has appeared as a finance expert on Fox News, Yahoo! and more. Topics covered in the Episode:
Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Naysayers can get in the way and keep us down and the key is to believe in yourself. Sometimes you surprise yourself. The sky is not the limit.
2. We do make assessments about what we wear and what others wear. It can reflect what we think about ourselves. We need people to believe we are capable. Naysayers are usually people not as successful as us and our cheerleaders usually are. 3. You’ll find you need help so it’s important to find mentors who know more than us. We need to own who you are, the good and the bad, and acknowledge how far we’ve come. Also important is to avoid comparing yourself to others, only compare yourself to where you want to be and where you are. Mentioned in the Episode: Chrissy Grigoropulos book: LadyShark: How to Become a Millionaire in Your 30s.
More About Chrissy: Chrissy founded her own law firm, GLG, while still in her 20s. She handles large exposure personal injury lawsuits, high-profile criminal defense, and workers’ compensation cases coupled with third-party actions. As a litigator and trial attorney, she has vast experience in criminal defense. She also appears as trial counsel for other law firms, litigating their personal injury lawsuits in New York courts, and at arbitrations and mediations.
From an early age, Grigoropoulos worked hard to achieve her goals. Notably, she finished high school at the age of 16 and received her BA from St. Joseph’s College at 19. She earned her JD from Western Michigan University’s Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2013.

| 76. “Don’t Take It So Personally!” – Can Daniel Goleman and Brené Brown Help Us Understand the Comment? | 28 Jun 2023 | 00:24:42 | |
Yo was super intrigued about the comment she would receive: “Don’t Take It So Personally!” Her go-to response was defensiveness. Perhaps you can relate? She went to the experts when it comes to emotional intelligence and emotions: Daniel Goleman author of the book, Emotional Intelligence, and Brené Brown, author of the book, The Gifts of Imperfection. Perhaps with their help we can all handle comments like this or others like it? Here are the 3 Takeaways: Instead of immediately becoming defensive or reactive, when someone says “Don’t take it So Personally”, let’s take a moment to pause, take a breath, and reflect on the situation. Play your Empathy Card: consider the intentions and context of the other once our emotions are managed. No matter what, understand that a comment or criticism does not define our entire identity or worth. As Mentioned In The Episode: Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence

| 74. Let’s Learn About THESIS: Trends in Higher Education in International Spheres Podcast with Kelly Davis. | 14 Jun 2023 | 00:36:19 | |
Kelly Davis joins Yo to discuss THESIS, an independent podcast, created by a group of international students who are currently in a Masters Program in Higher Education at the University of Oslo in Norway (the podcast is not affiliated with the University of Oslo). The theme for their first season, which just recently ended, was to discuss geo politics and the use of higher education as a form of soft power in autocratic regimes. Their second season which began June 7 and will focus on first generation students and higher education on a global level.
Kelly is also a special guest because she was in Girl Scout Troup 2136 which Yo led.
During the episode Kelly and Yo explored higher education trends and how it’s changing.
Here are the 3 Takeaways:
1. We can expect a drop in enrollment in the years to come due to a declining birthrate. 2. The reasons for not going to college cannot be easily defined and we can question if the motivation and role of higher education leads to more social mobility. 3. Our views on higher education are U.S. centric and outside the U.S. it’s a different story - if we think higher education has no value we should look outside the U.S.

| 68. Mothers’ Day Movement 2023: Addressing Global Maternal Mortality | 03 May 2023 | 00:26:29 | |
Dominika Turkcan, from Mothers’ Day Movement (MDM) joins Yo in this episode. The Mothers' Day Movement is an organization that grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother’s Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates to shift a portion of Mother’s Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of the women or person they love.
Since 2011, the group has raised over $900,000, in women's health, education, infant and maternal mortality, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR.
During the episode we explored what happened in 2022 with Kenya Connect and their plans for 2023 with their beneficiary, Saving Mothers, a global non-profit dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications among marginalized women.
Here are the 3 Takeaways from the Episode:
1. For the price of a bouquet of flowers, we can save a life by donating to MDM. 2. Currently in the United States, Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to suffer a pregnancy-related death than white women. Specifically in NYC, Black mothers are 9X more likely to die giving birth. Yet, 80% of these deaths are preventable.
3. Our donation to MDM can help achieve Saving Mothers’ vision of a world where every woman – regardless of her ethnicity or socioeconomic status – has access to quality reproductive healthcare services, and receives proper medical attention for complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

While researching Ep 53 about Bullies Yo found and read thebook Mobbing, Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace by Noa Davenport, PhD,Ruth Distler Schwartz, and Gail Pursell Elliot. Dr. Davenport is a culturalanthropologist, Schwartz and Pursell are consultants in marketing and HRrespectively. The authors call Mobbing, a traumatic syndrome and it cancertainly derail you if you’re trying to be or become a leader! Plus a Newsweek article indicates that Mobbing happens on aglobal level. The 3 EpisodeTakeaways 1. Be aware - be aware ofwhat your spiny “intuitive” sense tells you. 2. Lookat your options – leaving isn’t the only one. 3.
