Season 3 · Episode 10
Monday, May 12, 2025 • Duration 56:11
The Constitution has been the guiding document for the United State of America for nearly 250 years. The documents cover a wide range of issues which make it possible for people in a large, diverse country to live peacefully and harmoniously, most of the time. One of the important topics it addresses is the issue of which powers are “reserved” for States and which powers are “enumerated” for Federal government. Of course, it is not always so clear. In this episode, Lamar Roth and Tom Klaus discuss the concept of states' rights, exploring its historical context, evolution, and current implications, particularly in relation to education. They examine the tension between federal and state powers, the role of the 10th Amendment, and the influence of federal policies on local education systems. The discussion highlights concerns over public funding and the quality of education, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to governance.

Monday, November 25, 2024 • Duration 55:29
During this past couple of weeks President-elect Donald Trump has been making nominations for his cabinet. In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom talk about a few of his nominations. Please note, though, that politics and news changes quickly and so did at least one of his nominees discussed in this podcast. By the time we posted this podcast to the internet about 4 days later, the nominee had withdrawn. That’s how things happen sometimes, and so we have to be prepared to swerve and then keep going. Also, this podcast is also a Thanksgiving Holiday Special for Lamar and Tom as they really talk turkey (with occasional bad puns). And, of course, they talk a bit of Hawkeye football and basketball.

About This Episode
They also talk about errant tumbleweeds, meteors (or possibly space junk), and upcoming podcasts.

Season 2 · Episode 15
Monday, August 5, 2024 • Duration 51:24
Whether we like it, love it, or hate it, we are now in the midst of a full-blown Presidential campaign. The news just keeps happening. After the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden decided to end his run for a second term. He endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris, and all political parties are now in full campaign mode. As a result, conversations about politics will be unavoidable for most of us. Though we try to avoid politics in our podcast, we are going to try something a bit different. We are going to talk about the issues in the campaign (not the personalities) and offer some suggestions for how you can have similar conversations on political topics. This week we are going to focus on how you can silence the noise being produced by the campaigns and become more clear about how you feel about the issues. The links below will take you to some websites where you can learn more about media bias and where you can do your own fact checking…without the noise, without the pundits.
