S4E39 - Marathon Training - “Forge a meteorite sword”
jeudi 3 octobre 2019 • Duration 44:13
Beej is training for a marathon and Void’s mind is boggled at how someone even approaches that. BJ also picked up a few new Final Fantasy games and grabbed a Fitness Quest game on iOS to help his training. Void brings some interesting shows and movies to the table with The Wandering Earth and Savage Builds. He also tried out Kind Words and found it surprisingly charming.

S4E38 - Link’s Sayonara Goose Arcade - “Dedicated honk button”
jeudi 26 septembre 2019 • Duration 53:22
All the games came out this week! All of them. Each and every one. From the new Link’s Awakening on Switch, the Untitled Goose Game that everyone is talking about, to Sayonara Wild Hearts and all of the dozens and dozens of Apple Arcade games released in the last few days. There’s a ton of Fall game releases to discuss!
And you know what? We discuss them all.
Or at least the ones worth discussing. We dive in pseudo-deep on Link's Awakening because Void hasn't been able to devote a lot of time on it, and Beej's copy of the Dreamer Edition was backordered. We will be sure to discuss it more at length in future episodes.
The Untitled Goose Game is a delight. Without spoiling anything...there's goose who's a jerk, and you get to play as that goose and be a jerk. The puzzles you solve...involve being a goose and a jerk. It's awesome. Everyone should play it.
And then there's the piece de resistance...
Void Played Every Single Apple Arcade Game in 3 DaysMuch of the episode is devoted to how many games on the Apple Arcade service (free month trial, then $4.99 USD afterward) are worth playing. We 100% believe that this service is worth the price, if you're interested in mobile gaming and/or have kids and want gacha-less mechanics and some just legit fun games.
We go in depth on Sayonara Wild Hearts, What the Golf?, Various Daylife, Assemble with Care, Over the Alps, The Floor is Lava, Oceanhorn 2, Cat Quest II, Lego Brawls...and so much more.
Like...for real, this particular service is one that we didn't expect to find truly great games on. And we were shocked. If you have been hesitant about the service and been like "nah, I don't like mobile games enough" (like Beej was), then you should listen and give it a shot. Because these aren't "good for a mobile game" games, these are just good games. At least a lot of them are.

S4E36 - The Age of Subscription Models - “I’m drinking subscription water right now”
jeudi 12 septembre 2019 • Duration 50:09
We discuss the craziness that is subscription models. They’re everywhere now from Netflix to tooth brushes to cat food. We went in thinking about subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime.
You know, the stuff that everyone talks about. By the end of the discussion, however, we've realized that so much of what we consider as parts of our daily lives come as subscription services, too. Toothbrushes, kitty litter, even water bottles. We take advantage of the convenience they offer, but it's at a price -- we end up paying for overall than we do if we were picking up the items or products ourselves, individually.
Which is what makes it a successful business model. For games, for media, for physical goods. Our discussion veers wildly but it was super fun to talk about. With Void's background in media studies and marketing, he really fell into discussing the back-end of things and how the subscription model can be better for consumers and for the business -- if it's handled well.
That doesn't mean that having a thousand different subscription services are going to be good for anyone. We discuss a rise in piracy and the potential for burnout and even a return to what the cable companies dealt with in the late 80s and early 90s. It's a great discussion, and it went in directions we didn't think it would.
Weekly Geekery
BJ is getting back into Tennis with some refinished courts near his house, and he signed up for a marathon (a full marathon, no less) an hour before the show. He's going to be running it with Capsulejay and RunRunRosie.
Void is struggling to fit in geeky time, but still managed to watch Alita Battle Angel and check out the previews for Magic The Gathering Throne of the Eldraine set, which combines Grimm's Fairy Tales with Arthurian Legends into something that...just works.

S4E35 - Staying With a Game Long Term - “Dragon Quest is bland on purpose”
jeudi 5 septembre 2019 • Duration 43:09
We discuss what makes us decide to stick with a game long term and what can push us away from those games after we’ve committed to them. For geekery BJ has been diving into Collection of Mana while Void finally rewatched Endgame and gave She-Ra a shot.

S4E33 - Lessons from Podcast Movement 2019 - “Navel Gazing Hug Attack”
jeudi 22 août 2019 • Duration 01:03:35
BJ went to Podcast Movement 2019 and loved it! He got so much from it, and he wants to talk about all the takeaways that he got regarding the industry, being a creator, being a listener, and just how things can move forward in the future.
- What is Podcast Movement?
-
- Podcast Movement is aconference for podcasters and industry professionals. Not so much podcast listeners in every respect, but not always. Everyone there was a listener of some kind, so anyone can get something out of the event.
- General
-
- LaunchPadDM had a puppy pen and it was the greatest marketing ever. Beej tweeted a lot about these dogs. They were amazing.
- Our genre, “two white dudes talking about video games” is THE biggest joke genre of podcast
- Aaron Mahnke mentioned how podcast genres are quickly changing. He’s noticed even cooking shows are becoming popular. Usually these are visual media, but people are learning how to do it via audio
- Most people stream now
- Millennials tend to cherry-pick episodes
- Put keywords into description and subtitle (Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Nintendo, etc, not books, movies, video games, and so on.)
- Subscribing is THE most important rank factor
- Reviews are social capital and DO work. THey get people to click subscribe.
- People consider many different things as podcasts, from YouTube videos to livestreams to
- Voice call-in number
- Even on rebrands, keep the same RSS feed. Rob did this with Comic Box, and it was a great move
- Apparently, Instagram CONVERTS. We need to get better at Instagram.
- Make an ad, then put it in, share it to the company. If they like it, they might pay. If not, then you can cut it out of the segment and move on.
- Patreon
- Unpublish, don’t delete
- Beej unpublished $1 tier, but it’s still there for folks who are members
-
- Talk about it first thing, just as a reminder
- (Same for email)
- Use it as a membership program, not crowdfunding. They have tools for this.
- 3-5 tiers max, fewer is better. 1-2 works great.
